How much time is left for thesis now
Longer actually - I'm being granted an extension because my supervisor's had some stuff going on which has meant he's not been able to see me for a few months. So I should be finished some time in October!

Mate, we all know that you love doing UA-cam, but if it's preventing you from doing your thesis to your ful potential, don't think we'll be mad for you not uploading. It's completely understandable. Right now, your thesis is the most important thing in your life, and it might be the biggest thing (academically) you'll accomplish, so make sure you do it brilliantly well!

I'm a PhD student. Sometimes when I am bored or I am lazy to work, I watch one of your videos and it makes me motivated and excited to start working on my thesis again. Thank you for sharing your experience
It does happen to me too--the sweat on the forehead after putting on make up thing, and it's not just the forehead, the same happens to the bridge of my nose. Yes, even during cooler weather!

Every two minutes or so in your videos, I find myself going ??? lol but it's very interesting to see you talking about your work!
I love this series so much, so cool to see how far you've come with your thesis! Ik it may be stressful to think about, but maybe a follow up series could be "life after phd"? You could talk about your plans and job search and like, what you plan to do with all the work you've done. I watch alot of people who talk about their phd or law school studies but I feel like the post grad is kinda a void that nobody wants to talk about? Either way, love the videos!
Thank you SO MUCH for breaking down your thesis writting in this way, Simon! I'm currently writting a detailed plan of mine and I've been feeling like, should'nt this be way longer? and am I not just writting a bigger Masters thesis, rather than an actual PhD? Isn't this complete and utter crap?

I feel your pain - I'm running NLP programs overnight on my laptop for my PhD... and then hoping they work/don't crash/that I can get the other work done the rest of the time! Good luck with the write-up, I'm beginning my final year :-/
Hi Simon, seeing as you're struggling to run your code on your laptop, have you considered using Amazon Web Services? I often use it to run python scripts for machine learning from my laptop, and I can't recommend it enough! Look into AWS Educate to get free credit for renting a server (it's not very expensive anyway).
You can do it! Top tip: schedule texts that say this to be sent to yourself every few days hahaha.

Oh man, I am getting a lot of secondary stress from this video. I am nearly in the same phase of my phd as you are of yours, just having a couple of days off before the final “season”. I admire that you are still able to do all that work around youtube, for me the last year or so it has just been a train of presentations, meetings with my advisor, travelling to conferences, coding, teaching, writing papers, submitting the papers, rewriting the papers, resubmitting the papers and so on and so forth. I am so drained that I am not even able to grab my guitar time to time anymore or go shopping for groceries. I feel like a robot with one goal and that is to get the work done and then I go to silicon heaven. I wonder how stupid I must be when I do all this and earn barely enough money to pay my rent. Still, I cannot stop; it is like a drug (I imagine). Oh, and that room is fine, you should see mine :-) Good luck!!

3. Good luck with the final stages of your thesis! I'm currently (and have been for a few years now) trying to figure out what to do with my life post-undergraduate degree (post-bac? I'm not sure what the equivalent is in England), and getting a PhD is an option. Seeing your dogged dedication to your work, your delight in your hobbies, and your strong friendships has inspired and continues to inspire me while I figure myself out.
4. Addicted to book buying, myself. Especially philosophy books that are impossibly difficult.
5. WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU GOING?
Simon, given that you're doing such intensive coding as part of your thesis, could you, in the future make a video on your path of learning programming?
Like what languages you learnt, what concepts you went into and the seqeunce of it all?
I don't know if that'd be a popular demand but I'd love to have a sort of a checklist on the way to learning useful programming.

I just wondered if it would at all be possible for you to release your final thesis to your UA-cam community once it is finished.
I do not know any of the rules on doing a PhD and if doing that would be breaking any of them but if you could i reckon there would be quite a few people, including myself, who would love to read through it.
Solomon Chamberlin my current university has everyone's thesis from the past 10 years on their website for everyone to see, I'd expect Exeter to have something similar

If I'd had the time to properly write and shoot a video I would have done it in a heartbeat - unfortunately time is a luxury I just don't have these days!

I'm not an expert but I think so yes
Virtualenv is definitely a simple workaround.. I had to jump through one more hoop.. the machines I had access too did not have virtualenv installed.. so I had to add a custom PYTHONPATH pointer in the environment variable and install virtualenv there, and then use virtualenv for all other stuff..

Hey Simon, can I just ask what the process was when you were thinking of what to do a PhD in? How did you come up with the topic you're doing now? Love your vlogs, will miss them :O

So I applied for a bunch of projects that sounded interesting to me based on my experience of previous research at undergrad and what bits of the physics I liked. As it turns out I ended up at Exeter because the funding opportunities associated with the other projects fell through, so the choice was made for me!
