Aw man, I started my PhD with such a strong "no working evenings or weekends" attitude. And then, ever so gradually, I started going home a bit later, and very occasionally I'd come in on a Sunday to get a few bits done. Then, five days before I was due to submit, I found a mistake. I was at that stage where pretty much everything was up in my head and I was able to convince myself within just a couple of minutes that everything would be fine - all I basically had to do was go through half a chapter and remove some (but not all) of the dots... Of course, that sounds much easier than it actually was... I eventually finished at 2am or so. I'd missed the last bus, so I had to walk home in the rain (it was about 45 minutes walk) - and because it was August I hadn't thought to bring a coat or an umbrella, so I got pretty damn wet...
hah british men are good looking for about 5 minutes. then they get older and turn super ugly. this simon bloke is going to turn ripe in just round 10 minutes. picture that nose @2:42 in ten years. go ahead...imagine it...not nice, right?
I love these 'week in the life' vlogs - thanks so much, Simon :) Hearing your choir sing always gives me a lift - what a beautiful sound. I haven't done a PhD but that 'things are slow at the start of the process and manic when approaching the end' pattern definitely sounds familiar in relation to other things I have done. Thanks again - a thoroughly enjoyable 23 mins!!
It's so refreshing to find some vlogs on youtube which are so similar to my life. I'm so over seeing people who work from home in massive houses in LA haha
Don't ever stop doing these vlogs. They keep me going everyday. I am in the exact same boat.I'm 23 I work 50 hours a week at my job, I am in school for computer information systems security I am also currently working on an algorithm to run a drone autonomously with my friends and I have two children. Exhaustion just becomes a close friend that you can't escape.
Dude I've always been in awe of you because of your dedication and persistence, but as a current Vocal Music Education major, knowing you're a chorister as well just strengthens that feeling. Keep singing, man, always.
Simon, I loved your video! I'm finishing my final year at New York University and looking to pursue a PhD in Economics a couple years in the future after working in research, and it's refreshing to get a glimpse at what life looks like on the other side. Glad that you're still pursuing your extracurricular interests in choir during your PhD - your choir sounds beautiful - and it looks like you have a great community there. I would absolutely love to see more "A week as ..." videos! They made my day.
The phrase, "Last night we went to a house party after the Messiah," literally had me in stitches. You had me laughing all throughout. Also, your voice during your solo, sounded rich and buttery; not parched. I look forward to future vlogs! Keep up the good work toward PhD, singing, and UA-cam! I am new to your channel but I am definitely subscribed! Best wishes to you and yours, from the Pacific Northwest!
Hahahah your dad is so cute! I love these videos :) Watching you persevere through the struggles of the PhD is highly motivating, in a strange way. It's also nice to see you making time for hobbies and laughs, which is a nice reminder that I'm allowed to take a break every once in a while.
I have no idea why but these PhD vids are truly inspiring. Not only do I hope you get your PhD but these videos help me to knuckle down. Just want to say thank you for the videos, keep them up!
I just stumbled upon your videos last night, and I must say, they're lovely to watch! As a masters student, you motivate me to obtain a good work ethic, haha. Also - Handel's Messiah is great! I had the pleasure of singing it 2 years ago. By far the best choral experience I've ever had. :)
this is really cool..yours is the first channel I have found of actual good quality vlogs while the person vlogging is still living a normal life..now I have to go on the hunt for more channels like yours :D it's so interesting! this is what I want to do when I start going to university :)
by the way, I go to the cinema on my own sometimes, too...but it annoys me how it is received as something not normal that only lonely people do... I actually do it because I can't be bothered to ask one of my friends, or no one is free and I just really want to see the movie..why is it normal to watch one alone when you're at home, but as soon as the screen is big, it's weird? I just think it's crazy that people are so uncomfortable with the idea of someone enjoying being in their own company..
I also like to go to the cinema alone. :) Of course I love my friends and the time I spend with them, but it's great if you can enjoy your own company. And not just movies, tonight I go to a concert! My friends are too busy these days and I don't want to miss this experinence. :)
If you let it the end of PhD will absorb your whole life. It's not just you. You're doing an incredible job balancing your life compared to where I put myself at the end! Good luck. Dont worry about the viva its almost the best bit of PhD chatting to an external is about the only chance you have for someone to deeply care about what you've been doing. Its a great experience!
It's been a long while since I have posted. You have a lot going on! Don't worry about the coding. It will all work itself out, just give it time. Sometimes getting up and walking away from the project for a bit helps brings problems into perspective. Your music sounds great, as always. Handel seems to be a prerequisite for the Christmas holidays. Thankfully, Christmas break is just around the corner so all we student/teachers can take a much needed break from the insanity that is education.
I really enjoyed this Simon, thanks for putting out another one, appreciate how difficult it must be with other commitments to adhere to! Good luck with the PhD!
omg that normal distribution of the residuals literally gave me the chills! kudos! btw: For unto us a child is born is my favorite from Händel's Messiah. I used to sing it in the choir when I was in high school, and brings me happy memories. Too bad we didn't get to see a footage of it, but the rest of the songs (and the solo) sound very nice!
hey simon! ive been watching you since Sixth Form, and now i am 6/7 months away from completing my degree. It has been a wonderful journey, so amazing to see how you (and myself) progress in life! keep doing what you love!
This helps. I have been stuck in a procrastination rut these past few days. The deadline for my M.Phil. thesis submission is looming. Seeing you juggle so many things at once is inspiring.
Its nice to see a PhD from another field, I'm final year PhD in Medical Sci (I study how inflammation causes type 2 diabetes and how we can intervene and treat it) and we get the same kind of problems. I solved one problem with an experiment to be slammed with another. You're right though, it's nice to be able to start writing parts of your thesis, finally feels like progress has been made! Also the staying late thing, totes normal. I do around 8am to 9pm at the moment, just too much to do in the lab, plus thesis writing, plus paper writing as well. The last year is the worst but we're almost there stay strong!
I really like to watch these videos when I take a little break from working on my master thesis. It's somehow very motivating :) And I love the singing parts! (Sicut cervus is such a beautiful, beautiful piece of music)
Another boost of inspiration after the first phd vlog! It's really interesting to peak into a life of phd student and the actual process of writing thesis!
I absolutely love these week as a PhD student videos. I'm a junior in uni right now but i plan to do my PhD in biomedical engineering. Its just really nice to have a little glimpse into what getting a PhD is like :)
As an undergraduate who is considering postgrad/PhD study, I love all the content that you make about your PhD. I'm also an Anglican-Choral-Music-phile, so it's great to watch that content too! Coll Reg
Just watched both this and your last vlog consecutively, and they are such a treat! Studied a completely different field but your research and life is still thoroughly fascinating! Keep it up~
Last time Double Dragon, this week Hat Films. I like your choice of UA-cam videos to watch. Anyway, another great video Simon! Looking forward to seeing more of them
Really entertaining videos that are a little different from what's usually on UA-cam. I like it! It's great to see the perspective of a PHD student, especially for someone like me on the last year of my biology degree figuring out if I should go for a masters, PHD, or just find some sort of work. Ahhh decisions!! 😵😂
Loved the video and seeing all the work you have to do but also keeping it fun with other activities! Weekly vlogs take up more time than people think. I'm still an undergrad and vlogged the other week and it felt like a lot of extra time spent, even if it wasn't!
recently found your channel and I love the videos! always wondered what a PhD was like, I only got as far as an MSc in Economics. love the insight and daily life bits, keep it up!
Hey man, I'm doing a BSc in math, stats and economics starting next month. There's a few things I'd like to ask you. Any way I can get in touch with you?

Hey Simon ! I am a Physics student ( masters) from India and I know you must have been hearing this a lot but your videos are very inspiring. The best thing I love about you is the balance you have between studies, singing and relationship. I hope you make a ground breaking thesis :)
Great video, I will definitely continue to watch these 'week as a phd student' videos. To answer your question about having too little work early in the phd and too much work later; I am a second year phd student doing astrophysics and feel slightly different. I'm working to get my first (first-authored) paper out soon so the workload is quite heavy, I'm not sure exactly how much more pressure and overall work there will be when the actual writing and revising of the thesis begins.

Yay! I love these videos :3 I've been watching your vlogs since the beginning and it's so cool to come along with you on your journey. Each video is so inspirational in how passionate and hardworking you are. Keep it up! :)
Watching and listening to you guys singing sort of makes me want to get involved with singing in a chapel choir as well. You sing awfully well by the way! Feel no pressure, but I hope you continue with these videos. They're fantastic and very cheering :)
Hey Simon! I just recently found your channel and love your videos, especally these covering your life for a week. Subbed and looking forward for more!
I really love these vids! I am planning on heading back for an Economics PhD and the fact you're using recursive methods in your code makes me think this is probably what my life will be like in 5 years. Definitely seems like fun, but incredibly hard work! I can't wait!
Your vlogs are great.Would love for you to do more. I live very close to Exeter and i was born there. It's a lovely place. The University seems really great!
I always have too much to do (but I do remember the early days of free time at work). Also I am so jealous that you can 'leave things to run' and results magically appear
Loved the weekly video. As always, keeping me sane through finals lol We all got that struggle! Thank you so much for this! SUCH an inspiration!!! (and it maks me want to join a choir lol)
i strted watching you when i was in 2nd year college and i kept on watching your vlogs bc it motivated me. I graduated college last april and i'm currently halfway through grad school and am rewatching all your vlogs because yup i'm stressed again and need motivation :-(
Great video as always, I just got back from Exeter where I had a Physics interview and it was really weird recognising all the places from your videos aha (I've also got an Oxford interview coming up so huuuuge thank you for all your vlogs which have helped me so far!) keep making great stuff :D
Awesome singing as always, simon! And so interested in your field of study. Could you do more videos about atmospheric physics ... something undergraduate students can understand ? Explain more in detail what you've been studying in physics from the beginning and what your phd is about and why? Much love from Morocco!!!!
I like it, but maybe its get more excited if you do more review from your physics stuff (Phd, and talk about science, ...) it's gave me a motivated to do my coursework
Nice video idea :) I am also a physics student (who occasionally posts youtube videos)
Haha hi tibees
I don't know why but watching your videos gets me motivated to be as productive as I can be
Kyle Santin Me too!
Weird... I am basically procrastinating by watching them...
me too!
This is unrealisticly true!!!!!!
Watching his videos mostly makes me feel some kind of way...
Aw man, I started my PhD with such a strong "no working evenings or weekends" attitude. And then, ever so gradually, I started going home a bit later, and very occasionally I'd come in on a Sunday to get a few bits done.

You said you've never been to an island? Aren't you in England?

Thanks Kendra - very glad to still have you with me for the journey! :)
Aw, thank you Simon! I am looking forward to seeing where the next stage takes you. Things are looking very exciting on that front over on Twitter :)
Your work ethic puts mine to shame
Only during the weeks when I film ;)
SimonOxfPhys Are you going to Queens University, Belfast?
99 bugs in all the code, 99 bugs in the code, take one down, patch it around, 200 bugs all in the code.
so true! :D
Lol yep this happens
It's so refreshing to find some vlogs on youtube which are so similar to my life. I'm so over seeing people who work from home in massive houses in LA haha
Also in case it wasn't obvious i'm also doing a PhD; can confirm you're not the only one ;)

I'm actually an arts student and I really enjoy your videos, seeing you talk about your work and schedule motivates (shames) me into trying harder XD
Kimmy Beyah that was really rude and unnecessary
thank you, I actually laughed at the joke until he insulted you, sorry you had to have that.
Watching your videos is literally my favorite part of the day. Especially since I've been stressed as heck lately. Thanks Simon

Please do them every week! They're so entertaining
Joshua Mitchell He's a Phd student, man.
Wait he's a PhD student??
Yep, he's a Phd student.
+Tsui Kit Ho Do you want me to buy you a sarcasm detector?
Tsui Kit Ho I can tell you already that RMSVideos' comment was sarcasm
You are becoming my favourite vlogger. I'd love for you to do these weekly! They're so interesting to watch! Keep up the good work! :)
Well you're in luck - I'm planning on doing more vlogs and splitting them up into easier-to-handle episodes :)
Well Sir, you have just made my day :)
I really enjoy your week in my life videos, would be great to watch more of them from time to time!
Going through these videos again as a PhD student myself 😍 Thank you for immortalising this wonderful journey, Simon!
hey simon! ive been watching you since Sixth Form, and now i am 6/7 months away from completing my degree. It has been a wonderful journey, so amazing to see how you (and myself) progress in life! keep doing what you love!
This is so amazing! I feel like a proud parent haha :) Keep going til the degree is done - it's so worth all the effort you put in
I love these videos. Keep them up (Though, as a PhD student myself, I understand it's a wee-bit-difficult)!
oh. and staying late further into the PhD is SOOOO normal! Dontcha worry
Michael Hope what is your thesis about?
Abd ElRahman Mohammed It's around masculinities and how young guys show them after being abused
This helps. I have been stuck in a procrastination rut these past few days. The deadline for my M.Phil. thesis submission is looming. Seeing you juggle so many things at once is inspiring.
please keep doing these Simon, as a person beginning their PhD this is such a awesome series. keep it up mate!
Its nice to see a PhD from another field, I'm final year PhD in Medical Sci (I study how inflammation causes type 2 diabetes and how we can intervene and treat it) and we get the same kind of problems. I love these!! Thanks so much for making them. As an undergrad who is considering a PhD at some point, they're really fascinating :) thanks!
These are really fun to watch. You should make more... but not too much because I have to get work done as well!

Hi Simon, your vlog really inspired me to think about PhD, though I'm a first year undergrad, I can't wait to see more of your videos.
Last time Double Dragon, this week Hat Films. I like your choice of UA-cam videos to watch. Anyway, another great video Simon! Looking forward to seeing more of them
I just keep watching "another week as a phd student" every week or maybe every 3 days. These episodes inspire me...
Really like the insight you bring into uni/PhD life day to day, please make more they are extremely enjoyable :))
Really entertaining videos that are a little different from what's usually on UA-cam. I like it! It's great to see the perspective of a PHD student, especially for someone like me on the last year of my biology degree figuring out if I should go for a masters, PHD, or just find some sort of work. Definitely make more of these weekly vlogs, they're really inspiring and motivate me to put my computer down, and get some of my work done, myself! :)
I love the little singing interludes in this vlog, your voice is so lovely!
Please do this kind of video every week! Such an enjoyment to watch.
Great video, seems like a very satisfying form of procrastination! Hope it comforts you to know that the work hour- and frustration densities also seem to be increasing functions of time in social science/management PhDs. Nevertheless, so is the utility derived from working on the project :)
Love these Week in the Life vlogs! They Inspire me to work hard an pursue a PhD as well, which I've been dreaming of for quite long :)
As a fellow doctoral student, I totally empathize with your videos. I have also been staying later at the office but it is because we are nearing the end of the semester.
Been watching this PhD series since high school in 2018 . Now I'm a working professional as a physics major and I still watch this playlist. Something comforting to watch the week in the life of a physics student battling equations and inversions before AI could do it all for you.
Omg I sang for behold darkness shall cover the earth a few years ago! It's a beautiful piece. I love these vlogs, you should do them more often!
Hey Simon ! I am a Physics student ( masters) from India and I know you must have been hearing this a lot but your videos are very inspiring. The best thing I love about you is the balance you have between studies, singing and relationship. I hope you make a ground breaking thesis :)
So do I! Thank you :)
I enjoy these vlogs a lot and they're really motivational. I'd love to see more of them!
Great video, I will definitely continue to watch these 'week as a phd student' videos. To answer your question about having too little work early in the phd and too much work later; I am a second year phd student doing astrophysics and feel slightly different. Simon, I am from Brazil and love your channel! You're such a nice guy !
Can already see your improvement with editing and am enjoying your vlogging style. Keep it up :)
I always seek out videos of this ilk. Listening to intelligent and educated people articulate their thoughts, ideas, interests, and even something as benign as their daily life, is an education in itself.
I really really enjoy those vlogs, they're awesome, please keep them up!
Do as many of those as you can! That was really fun and your solo sounded sooooo good! Hugs from Brazil dude
Please do them every week or fortnightly!! Helps me be motivated too!
I would really enjoy more of these from here and there (but don't let it affect your work). It's very interesting and motivating for me to be as productive as you are.
Wow didn't realise what a great singer you are 😮
Love your videos
I absolutely love this! This miniseries has actually made me start considering continuing past undergraduate when the time comes.
the editing is SOO GOOD!!! Love this and YOU!!
im only 16 and are doing my GCSE's but to see this how it is from the perspective of a real student day to day is very useful, thanks.
Yay! I love these videos :3 I've been watching your vlogs since the beginning and it's so cool to come along with you on your journey. Each video is so inspirational in how passionate and hardworking you are. Keep it up! :)
Props to you for popularising education and choral music.. keep up the good work!!
Watching your video with "Man, I'm so lazy" running through my head the whole time.
Watching and listening to you guys singing sort of makes me want to get involved with singing in a chapel choir as well. You sing awfully well by the way! Feel no pressure, but I hope you continue with these videos. They're fantastic and very cheering :)

these vlogs are brilliant! thanks so much for making these!
i strted watching you when i was in 2nd year college and i kept on watching your vlogs bc it motivated me. I graduated college last april and i'm currently halfway through grad school and am rewatching all your vlogs because
yup i'm stressed again and need motivation :-(
I love the vlogs! Very informative and entertaining to boot!
hey, I really love your "week as a PhD student" vlogs, please do more!
I'm filming one this week - don't worry, more is coming!
Seeing other people stressed makes me less stressed haha
Great video as always, I just got back from Exeter where I had a Physics interview and it was really weird recognising all the places from your videos aha (I've also got an Oxford interview coming up so huuuuge thank you for all your vlogs which have helped me so far!) keep making great stuff :D
Good Luck on your interview!!! 💪📚😎
Good luck! Just remember to keep calm and look forward to an interesting chat with the academics for ten minutes :)
Love your vlogs. Excited when found out you tooooo use python!!! That's what I'm doing in my phD thesis. very motivating work~~~handshake~~~~
Amazing vids!!! Very educational to find out how uni life goes on:)
Hey man I'm really enjoying these vlogs and I'd love to see more of them!
I live for these. Amazing ^^
Awesome singing as always, simon! And so interested in your field of study. Could you do more videos about atmospheric physics ... something undergraduate students can understand ? Your week makes the week of a second-year physics undergrad look like a walk in the park XD Really enjoy the videos, keep them up! :)
Awesome! Truly inspiring, keep up all your great work!
Good stuff. I admire your work ethic. Your dad is hilarious.
I like it, but maybe its get more excited if you do more review from your physics stuff (Phd, and talk about science, ...) it's gave me a motivated to do my coursework
Next one will have less singing and more PhD I think!
Wow :) thanks for reply
I actually love you Simon - you're the best
As a physics major and a music minor, your videos are really inspiring. :)
btw, John Williams is an excellent choice!
Yes, love these week vlogs!
These are awesome vlogs Simon, I am working on my master's and this is helping me go through it! Keep it up, mate :D
