I have 2 girls using tgatb math. My 2nd grader does well and picks up math quickly , so it works great for her. My 4th grader struggles with math. I am actually going back to work on those foundational skills. Such a blessing to have options with curriculum when one isn't working.
Thanks so much for this thorough review! I was just going to use TGTB because I have the free PDF, but I think we might be better off with MWC for building a stronger foundation in math concepts.
If you think you’d like MWC style (mastery with a bit of spiral) I highly recommend Apologia. They have up to level 5 out. I used their level 3 with my kids last year and we love it!
I wonder if you can request to be part of their pilot program for Grade 4. I saw a homeschool mom on YT share her experience with the pilot program for Grade 4 (i.e. she got access to a copy of Grade 4 and used it with her child and had positive things to say about it). The author is Kate Snow and has a website; maybe try contacting her via her website to inquire, if you don't mind testing it out before it's officially out.
We started with math u see and went on to TGTB math and now using MWC!!! We’ve only used the new math with TGTB!!! I think MWC breaks down the math to make math easier!!! We didn’t do the assessments but like the checkpoints!!!
I don’t get how no one mentions the number of index cards you have to make for math with confidence. We just finished kindergarten, and I swear I spent half the time just making index cards for the lessons. It was insane. We liked the curriculum… but sooooo many index cards we are almost considering a different curriculum now.
We're only a few weeks into Level K with my youngest, but I haven't found it to be a big deal at this point. I bought blank playing cards and they work great. :)
Hi! Thank you so much for these vids, they are so helpful! This is our first year homeschooling and we are about 1/3 way through TGATB math 1. I’m not totally loving it. My daughter is doing well so I’m not sure if we should just stick it out and finish then move to MWC 2 or if we should switch now to MWC 1 (although the beginning would probably be all review for her at this point). Any feedback? Thanks!
My best advice would be to take a look at the scope and sequence of each program, then you can see what you've covered vs what still needs to be learned. :)
I keep hearing the phrase that MWC goes deep while TGTB goes wide. Can someone explain that to me like I'm 10 years old? Hahaha. I'm so torn. We started Horizons and it wasn't a great fit for me or my oldest, but my youngest enjoyed it. We transitioned to Simply Math for 1st & 3rd, and it wasn't a great fit for my 3rd grader and a bit too easy for my 1st grader. I personally like how easy it is to teach from, but I don't know if it will be a good fit for this coming September for either of my girls. If MWC had Grade 4 it would be an easy decision. And maybe it is an easy decision for my rising 2nd grader, but I'm still not sure what to do for my rising 4th grade student.
Deep vs. Wide means that for MWC you'll get a ton of why's and breakdowns for how to solve (deeper understanding in the end-spiral mastery approach). TGAB is more of "here's the problem, solve it. So we can move to the next thing." (Super spiral-y, not much foundational teaching) Hope this helps. 😊 Good luck!
If we have done up to 1st TGTB, would you switch to 2nd grade MWC? Do they match or well or will my kids miss stuff switching over from one to the other? Do I need to go back with 1st grade MWC?

Thank you for sharing about Rainbow Resource! I just bought a math kit!
Yay!
THIS is the video I needed, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for your help! Just followed!
I really wish they had the level 4 out now… 😩

@@homeschoollifemomthanks for the suggestion 😊
@@assaba22 I think it's too late to test it out...BUT... maybe not... I'll email!
@@assaba22 I just checked and the pilot program for 4th grade was started back in 2022... I missed that one!

That was our progression too🤣🫣 Although, we did do a stint with Abeka Arithmetic while I was trying to make up my mind about MWC.
can you tell me how math u see compares to mwc?
@@JBZ4SHEEZEEEEEE MWC is has more review than math u see!!! Both are visual and hands on!!! MWC is more hands on!!!
Yes, it is very good at explaining concepts and also review. :)

Thank you for the comparison video, Christine! For your kids at least, do you feel retention is better with MWC versus TGTB?
Yes, absolutely!
I agree! The vast spiral of TGTB was not the retention vibe my child needed. Although the games were fun!

What size spiral coils would you recommend for the workbook?
How do I get the spiral copy instead of bound copy?
I bought the PDF version and bound it myself. :)

I would go straight to grade 2. If your kids do end up having areas they need to work on then you could just do some extra practice there.
I prefer Math With Confidence
It's a great program!
In your opinion would MWC be a good choice for a child who is behind his grade level and has a hard time grasping math
Yes, absolutely!
