as a current fender dealer i can confirm that on these amps the cost of repair would be more than the value of the amp even in fender's opinion. Our store has had a couple of bad starter amps like this that fender simply tells us to throw away and they send us a new one. we always take the knobs, grill covers, sometimes even speakers off before chunking them though, anything we can use or reuse, we salvage.
When something electronic isn’t worth repairing due to costs, at least I give it away to someone who can repair it and use it again. Not throw it in the garbage. Last thing I gave away was a 4-track tape recorder. I kept in touch with the guy, it’s up and running now and I was happy for that kid.

I had about decided to trash the thing, when my 1st wife said "Last week he kept bringing me broken crayons... could that be...?) I stood the stereo on it's face and used her blow dryer on the jack. Sure enough 3 different colors came out. After it stopped dripping I used a small stick brush and presto, got my headphone jack... back.

Great amp line. My buddy has a rumble 500 head and has used it for years and years. Paired with the right speaker cabinet it's loud enough to hang with the big boys.
My son got a Rumble 15 in a package deal with his bass, and it failed shortly after getting it. The innards are a little different. The power circuit board and other electronics are not on separate boards. Anyway, this video helped if for no other reason that I knew exactly which screws to remove to get it open. I found the fuse blown. I am waiting on new fuses to arrive, and hope it fixes it. Of course, you need to wonder why the fuse blew, but my son says he was initially using some sketchy cables. The problem is still there. Mechanical energy from the headphone socket use will eventually break the solder joints again. Problem is having the socket directly connected to the board. Great bass work!

My Rumble 25 was such a nice practice amp that my son permanently borrowed it from me. If you just want a practice bass amp these work fine but the 40W has a lot more features
I bought the rumble 40 last summer for practicing my bass in my cabin. My remote cabin is lite by low wattage lightbulbs, boom box and powered by deep cycle batteries, charged every other day by gas generator. I don’t like earphones and a typical 100 watt bass amp would drag the batteries down in one hour. A little 15 watt output Ibanez practice amp,(19 watt power draw) sounds okay plugged into a big 15 inch allumitone driver, but lacks power when jamming with others. My new rumble 40 sounds good and has the power, but because of warranty, I’ve yet to wire in an external speaker jack. The problem is the wattage draw climbs around 40 plus or minus 5 watts, forcing greater battery drainage! I would have bought the rumble 25 But 6.5 “ speakers don’t cut it and the 25 has a three band EQ, while my 40 has a four band. One guy who purchased the 40 didn’t like the driver and replaced it with a 4 ohm driver, while the original is 8. If I replace the driver with a four will that double the output and drop the wattage draw for a given volume? Also my alumitone 15 is very efficient, but it’s also 8 ohm, so if I wire it parallel with the combo’s driver, I’d end up with a 4ohm load and perhaps save electricity. Perhaps this amp can’t handle a 4 ohm load?
I like your friend TJ playing his Kiesel "Thanos"..."Fanos" (?). Just can't understand it. Yeah, I still have a SB 5000 5 string Jazz and love the tone and playing feel of those old Carvin basses. And the new Kiesel stuff. I tradet the SB 5000 for my old Warwick Streamer Stage I and some dough, loved the tone of the Warwick but didn't like the thin neck anymore. First I was a bit sceptic about the upper horn of the bass.... But in no time I got used to the unconventional shape and fell in love with the tone, the feel of the neck and that the tone knob is working when the active preamp is in use. I have a Haeussel Jazz 5 active, built in the 1980's, that has a similar bridge and literally the same saddle with the set screws. No double ball end strings needed, what is a huge advantage for this 5 string bass. You just loosen the thumbscrews at the bridge, hang in the ball end, straighten the string and tighten the headless locking screw. Only few turns of the thumb screw at the bridge, and you are good to go. Because this system gives you a perfectly straight string you maybe have to tune it only once when the strings are proper stretched, given the locking screws are tight, but not too tight. Then the bass holds the tuning absolute perfect.
My sons Rumble 25 tube amp rocks balls but my solid state Rumble 100 I bought used 3 months ago died. You can have it. My 40 year old Ampeg still sounds beautiful.
I know its no vintage bassman but modern mass production build quality aside these little amps actually sound pretty decent. Ive seen similar problems with effects loop jacks. Im always suspicious of any switcing jack that kills the signal.
I have an amp in the garage that will turn on, but no sound. It’s a cheap practice amp and not worth putting any money into, but it would be cool to fix it just for fun, even to just give it to a student if nothing else. Watching this video to get some pointers. Thanks for sharing 👍
Great fix, I've been out of the electronics game for a long time though as its difficult to make a living. In the UK we call those poor solder connections dry joints. It's a very common fault as you know when sockets are soldered directly to a PCB. Love your channel. Wow, your pal is a wicked bass player.
Hey Brad, one small tweak that is very useful is to remove the resistor in the headphone jack and remove the sleeve connector, that turns it onto a cab out that disengages the main speaker.
I'm not sure if my idea is unique but I designed a 4x12" vertical cab with wiring for 3 different impedance values with switching for each including separate input jacks, one each for 4 ohms, 8 ohms and 16 ohms, using 4 12 pin spdt switches in pairs. If I am correct in thinking that if 3 of the 4 ohm speakers are in series and then in parallel with the 4th it ends with a 8 ohm value? I'll have to test my theory. I also modded my little Blackstar ID Core 40 watt stereo amp that has twin 6.5" speakers for external speaker output adding switch and a pair of output jacks..I wanted to move some air with my DIY speaker cabs, which I can also use with my surround sound setup. that's why the impedance value switching function was needed. cabs can be attached together side by side to simulate a full stack or syand on either side of my 100" big screen on the wall for surround sound hookup...I like my toys to be versatile as well as functional.
Easy fix on that one Brad. Sometimes a guy can find the nicest things in the 'does not work' bin.😁 Your buddy TJ can sure make that Kiesel bass talk!! 🤘😎🤘
That was good - PCB solder joints always a problem? Love the Star Wars like logo at the beginning. Keep up the good work. That bass player and the Kiesel was out of site. Very good. The dumped Rumble now works!
Nice, "new stuff" is always fun, I just bought my kids their first guitar. Unfortunately i made the mistake of buying a Squier...the price was right but the play ability just isn't all that great. I will most likely be adding a new neck/headstock and pick ups to start with. I will be posting a video on my channel very soon.
You're going to replace the entire neck and pickups when a basic setup would probably solve most of your playability issues? This probably isn't the hobby for you.
@@jasont.9559 Definitely not my hobby, as stated its for my kids 3,5 and 9. if I didn't get this thing from a yard sale for $40 I would agree that upgrading would be a waste and buying a whole new setup would be the way to go. I am thinking the neck is warped and that is where our tuning issues are coming from. I have made arrangements with a local shop to check it out for us.
streetstomper cheap controls and switches will do that, I think the pickups should be fine. I’m sure the tech you take it to will be competent enough to take care of it!
I'm glad TJ picked up that bass at NAMM. I think we all have experienced picking up an unexpected instrument that would play effortlessly and just sing in our hands... ...and when we go back to the store to buy it, someone else already bought it. He pulled the trigger and got it to share with us.
Thank you very much! Turns out my own rumble 25 had a similar problem. I cleaned the headphones jack just as you did and it now works (with some noise, though). Any idea what could be giving me the noise?

Hey Brad. Thanks for all these vids. I don’t know if these are bread and butter jobs for you but thanks for wrenching on some of these mega production amps. As sub par as they are, the vids are great for those of us learning to troubleshoot.
My bass is in top top condition, it’s got a fresh battery but the amp is now quiet for some reason. All the dials are put to max and the only way I can get a decent volume is if I hit the overdrive button. I can’t even use my effects pedals properly on it.

looking forward to this. I am interested in buying one of these amps but if it's junk then I might save up another hundred for the 25w orange bass amp.
We have a Rumble 40. Incredibly lightweight, loud enough, and even has enough treble available to amplify voice and ukulele. I do play bass on it too. ;) Our first one had a very similar issue, but would cut out at random. Brought it in to get fixed, and it now works nicely. Those solder joints were tragic! Sheesh!

TDA 2040 and 2050 are notorious for going bad I have a rumble 60 amp given to me at the music store I repair amps for and trust me it's a totally different beast "class D" single IC chip mounted on a heat sink problem blinking power light voltage goes up and down I can't remember but I think + - 35 volts dc off the supply and 7815 7915 on preamp supply I think that either the the switching IC is bad or the audio output IC I think replacing both would be ok but I was just asking myself if it's even worth the trouble lol.
I picked up a used fender rumble 40, it's quiet until I plug a cable into it. Then it buzz/hums like the cable is a noise antenna? I've tried different cables, but they all kinda buzz, some more than others.
My rumble 25 has been a problem since I got it. The volume still doesnt ever really work and then it'll make a loud cracking sound and start working normally, but everytime I turn it off and back on, it does the same thing over again.
I've bought a lot of amps for dirt cheap or free because of bad solder joints. 1/2 hour in the garage with my soldering iron and it fixes them right up.

Are you friends with Tony Pepers? He made that Rocket Socket. Make some great pedals too :)
Yes! Brad and I chat on Facebook from time to time. Thanks!!
@@TonyPepers sweet! (Ethan over here, I don't think my name's on my profile 😋)
Check that it doesn't have the same issue with a dirty headphone jack or bad solder joints.
The Guitologist I sure will. The video is VERY HELPFUL because I know nothing about the inside of an amp ... 🙋♂️
Great fix, I've been out of the electronics game for a long time though as its difficult to make a living. In the UK we call those poor solder connections dry joints. It's a very common fault as you know when sockets are soldered directly to a PCB. Love your channel. Wow, your pal is a wicked bass player.
These Rumbles all have shotty solder work. Thanks this helped me fix one!
I'm glad headless basses are making a comeback. The overdrive sound of the bass sounds great.
I have one of those too. Nice practice amp and iIt makes a decent acoustic guitar amp (piezo under the saddle) once you get the tone dialed in. :)
Hey Brad, one small tweak that is very useful is to remove the resistor in the headphone jack and remove the sleeve connector, that turns it onto a cab out that disengages the main speaker.
I think (my humble opinion) that is the best GD bass player i NEVER heard - great job and i certainly love his use of chords etc!
I’ve found a Traynor YGL3 MKIII head and matching 4x12 cab driving by a dumpster, it was loaded with 4 Telefunken EL-34’s, that was a good find.
Easy fix on that one Brad. Sometimes a guy can find the nicest things in the 'does not work' bin.😁 Your buddy TJ can sure make that Kiesel bass talk!! 🤘😎🤘
Dang, i really enjoy watching you figure out what's wrong with electronics. I don't know why it is so entertaining. Thanks!!
Once again, Brad saves the day.. Well done young man.
He is the great Bradhollieo! Needs TP for his phone jackhollieyoh
@mattelderca he said hollieyo🤟
Please share the source for the Rocket Sockets. Thnks
That was good - PCB solder joints always a problem? Love the Star Wars like logo at the beginning. Keep up the good work. That bass player and the Kiesel was out of site. Very good. The dumped Rumble now works!
The TDA2030, TDA2050 and LM1875 all share the same footprint and are all great little amp chips of 8-30 watts
I found myself captivated and I want to say thank you very much
Glad to see you doing projects again . I really learn a lot and enjoy your project videos along with SPF Thanks again J
It's so cool to watch your discovery process. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Upgrading pickups will not give you any advantage for your kids. Replacing the neck should be fine.
@@graxjpg ya that is kind of what i'm thinking, with the pickup I'm mainly trying to get rid of some crackling and popping when plugged in.
streetstomper cheap controls and switches will do that, I think the pickups should be fine.
TJ's smile at the end says it all, good job fellas.
inspiring, I pulled a fender champ out of a dumpster a while ago i'll give it a go. good to see you're staying on top the haircut situation ;-)
Thank you very much! Turns out my own rumble 25 had a similar problem. I cleaned the headphones jack just as you did and it now works (with some noise, though). Any idea what could be giving me the noise?
Glad it helped
Came in looking for help with soldering and left wanting to pick up my bass! Was not expecting those skills!
You bailed me out dude ! I was having same issue with my Rumble 25 . I lucked out with just having to clean my jack . If it does act up again I know where to look first . THANKS !
I can’t even use my effects pedals properly on it.
love your vids brad. Watching your repair amp videos really inspired me to start learning how amps really work and to repair them. Your repair videos are my favs there really in depth and offer a lot of insight and advice
"Hey TJ! Yeah, I know it's 4AM but can you come over and test this little amp?" :-)
I had that thing as my first bass/guitar amp! It sounds super funky with a strat in the fourth position.
looking forward to this. I am interested in buying one of these amps but if it's junk then I might save up another hundred for the 25w orange bass amp.
on inspection, I am happy I didn't buy one of these because the transformer is tiny even compared to my vox pathfinder 10!
Cool looking bass and nice play-n. I've fixed a lot of stuff like that. People are so lazy.
You gotta remember though some people just can't grasp this knowledge so we can't blame everyone
We have a Rumble 40.
Incredibly lightweight, loud enough, and even has enough treble available to amplify voice and ukulele. I do play bass on it too. ;)
Our first one had a very similar issue, but would cut out at random. Brought it in to get fixed, and it now works nicely.
Those solder joints were tragic! Sheesh!
TJ's playing is great!
Good bass player. Really like how the high voltage board is separate for noise isolation and modular replacement.
Sweet. Dumpster diving is my specialty!
Sounds kind of kinky to Brit :-).
😆
Awesome Brad! Really enjoyed the guest player :) I have a Rumble 350 with no output ... might have to go back at it.
Nicely sorted Brad, quality slapping and tapping by your mate too.😎🎙🎸✅
He just wanted the controls cleaned & YOU BROKE IT. :)
Heh
Oh joy, a dumpster rescue vid I love those !!! Btw thumbs up the new intro :) I'm the great cornholio I need tippy for my bunghole, epic!
Thanks for the video. You are using the Service Diagram Combined Rumble 25 V3. I cannot find the diagram on the internet anymore. I only get een blank sheet. Can you send a copy?
TDA 2040 and 2050 are notorious for going bad I have a rumble 60 amp given to me at the music store I repair amps for and trust me it's a totally different beast "class D" single IC chip mounted on a heat sink problem blinking power light voltage goes up and down I can't remember but I think + - 35 volts dc off the supply and 7815 7915 on preamp supply I think that either the the switching IC is bad or the audio output IC I think replacing both would be ok but I was just asking myself if it's even worth the trouble lol.
Good job BtG! Excellent technique TJ!👍👌
Love your Thames Television intro from longer ago than I can remember and I was younger then too. Doh!
Love the videos where Brad raids Dumpsters. I thought it was a welcome return. Please do a new one Brad!
the hartke mini bass amps with the half aluminum half paper speaker is really something .
I picked up a used fender rumble 40, it's quiet until I plug a cable into it. Then it buzz/hums like the cable is a noise antenna? I've tried different cables, but they all kinda buzz, some more than others.
Brad your dumpster retrieval episodes are stellar.
fun video from start to finish! Always enjoy them....
Thanks Mike.
My rumble 25 has been a problem since I got it. The volume still doesnt ever really work and then it'll make a loud cracking sound and start working normally, but everytime I turn it off and back on, it does the same thing over again.
My Fender Rumble 500 has a rattle. This video gives me the confidence to open mine up. Any hints on where to look for the solution?
It’s probably something loose in the chassis. Tighten all screws. Try separating chassis from cab and see if rattle is still there.
I've bought a lot of amps for dirt cheap or free because of bad solder joints. 1/2 hour in the garage with my soldering iron and it fixes them right up.
Thanks Brad! I figured that the problem would be something simple like cold solder joints.
