@@TheABelGuitar I would, too. From 1986-1998 (i.e. before he took steroids), Bonds had accumulated about 100 WAR. Griffey retired somewhere in the 80s. Bonds was one of the best home run hitters of his generation, was consistently the best at getting on base, was a great defender, and even retired in the top 35 of stolen bases. Junior was an amazing player in his own right but didn't have Bonds' consistency of greatness.

@@dreadiejaquan9240It does. The whole philosophy of the intentional walk is to make the next batter to punish you. You usually int walk the best batter in the lineup because chances are he's going to burn you a lot more often than the guy behind him.
In this situation it TOTALLY makes sense. The 7th run is meaningless. It's two outs in the bottom of the 9th. There's no where else to put Bonds but to walk him and sacrifice a meaningless run. It's no different than if it were a man on third and no one out and the infield plays back to concede a run for an out.
That 7th run really wasn’t meaningless though….

Not a bad move, even if it doesn't work out, and in all six instances this occurred the pitching team won. At least here it's with one of the greatest hitters ever and what might be Mayne’s career highlight (no disrespect to him, most players would've looked like a nobody in this situation).

I was a huge baseball fan growing up. I never played Little League but I was at the ball park every afternoon and all day on Saturday shagging foul balls so I could trade them in for Sno Cones at the snack bar. On Opening Day I was always first in line for the pancake breakfast. When I could get my dad to give me a few bucks I'd get a cheeseburger, Coke, a few Jolly Rancher sticks and a pack of Big League Chew from the snack bar and I felt like a king. Each summer I'd watch the Cubs play on WGN and the Braves play on WTBS just about every day. Once Michael Jordan became Air Jordan I was completely focused on basketball and lost almost all interest in baseball. In 1998 I was living in San Diego and I went to my first MLB game. I was surprised the game hadn't changed in the years I was exclusively following basketball. I immediately fell in love with baseball all over again. I think I ended up going to about 15 Padres game that year. At one point over four days I saw Livan Hernandez (the year after he was World Series MVP), Greg Maddux (NL ERA leader and Gold Glove), Tom Glavine (Cy Young winner), Kevin Brown (right before he became the first $100M player), Andy Ashby (the year he threw a 75 pitch complete game), and Trevor Hoffman (41 consecutive saves and Reliever of the Year) all pitch. The Thursday game was a day game and I decided I wanted to go the night before so I could see Glavine pitch. It was too late to request leave and I remember telling my Chief Petty Officer that morning I needed a half day of liberty but I couldn't say why. To my surprise he let me go, no questions asked. That was the only time in my six years in the Navy anyone ever threw me a bone. Thanks, Chief!!! I still have the ticket stubs for those games. Throw in Bonds getting intentionally walked, bottom of the 9th, bases loaded, with the tying run on second, Kerry Wood's 20K game, David Wells' perfect game, the McGwire - Sosa home run race, the Padres going to the World Series, Jordan getting his sixth ring and the Super Bowl being in San Diego, and 1998 was easily the greatest year of my life as a sports fan.

This was 1998, the height of the steroid era. This was most certainly NOT before he started using them.
Bonds was natural from 1986-1998. He started using in the '98 offseason because he was jealous of the notoriety that lesser talented players like Mcgwire and Sosa were getting. He was so supremely talented and arrogant in his own abilities that there was no reason or incentive whatsoever for him to use drugs earlier in his career.
