I wouldn't hate her as much if it weren't for the fact that she's so hypocritical. She wants people to understand her needs but she doesn't want to understand others. I guess she does her role well, but that's still doesn't make me like her any less.

I think people really struggle with the idea of characters not meant to be likeable unless it is a love to hate, "lol they are trash" and then draw fan art on tumblr of them or so evil. Quess is a dumb teenager getting involved in stuff she doesn't understand which is a pretty realistic thing and common in Gundam. What Quess does though is fail to grow like other characters and thus she ends up suffering the consequences. People see that and go well she must be badly written not getting that the possibility to fail at growth even as a newtype is the point.
It links in heavily with what Tomino has pushed about newtypes. It isn't fairy UNDERSTANDING magic but an ability that has consequences, especially if you abuse it and don't have a strong enough will of your own. There are many links with drug use you could make with it though I don't know how intentional they are.

No wonder why people hated Unicorn, because it was only showing the positives of newtypes rather than the negatives, and that being a newtype is the only solution to ending conflict within humanity, and that the negatives of newtypes are only caused by the mindsets of people rather than it's flaws and the deliberate abuse of the abilities. And of course, they went too far with the limits of newtype abilities. So basically, Unicorn was basically showing the propagandized form of newtypeism, the same newtypeism that Char himself promoted and used to justify dropping Axis.

The biggest issue with Quess is she gets way too attached to strangers. She gets attached to Amuro when she doesn't know him. Quess never has any actual chemistry with anybody. She disrespects Chan after knowing her for all of 5 seconds. Then she meets Char. Gets attached to him. Later on Quess calls out Chan for taking Amuro away from her. Again. They knew eachother for 5 seconds. It's just so horribly contrived for an excuse to get Amuro and Char to hate each other more. If anybody was a tragey, it was Chan. She put down a psychotic kid, only to be put down by another psychotic kid.

Quess was not there to contrive more reasons for Char and Amuro to hate each other. Her story demonstrates the danger of hero worship, especially when lacking a reliable and respected authority figure. Her presence made it all too clear that Amuro was much too busy being a cog in the machine to meaningfully help this young person, and how incredibly corrupt Char had become.

@@Mitsuraga Hathaway at one time, did had a hero worship for Amuro Ray, since he was child and a young teen. He did wanted to be just like him when he grows up and he possibly could've been, if it hadn't been for Quess betraying both Amuro and him for Char.
It's been proven otherwise in Hathaway's Flash, where Amuro's Newtype spirit or possibly Hathaway memories & flashbacks; reminding him the dangers and consequences for following Char's ways & ideals that'll cost him and others their own lives, but mostly his. Yet he tells Amuro to shove it, since he knows he's becoming a lot more like Amuro & Bright's arch-nemesis and a lot less like them.
Possibly, he chose to be that way was mostly for Quess's sake as what Char says and does to get her interested in him, in the first place. It's too bad she didn't really realize the real reason Char was interested in her and not what she actually believes as what she also feels for him.
Real sad and absolutely pitiful for Quess, as it turns out that she was like the only key and last hope for both Earth Federation & Londo Bell. She could've prevented their own political & manpower from growing beyond their own reach as the Titans, if she's been there to settle things over the matter, between the classes of the Earth's population and their interests.
What makes it more sadder is that she would’ve been another Beltorchika/Chan for Hathaway, as like you said, if Amuro wasn't being too busy, focusing on his main enemy and his intentions, instead of taking some time to help her with her problems. Maybe things could've turned up differently, who knows?

I used to think Quess was a poorly written character because I thought she was irrational. Your video really helped to explain where her motives come from, specifically the false love that comes from Newtype connections. It's one thing for a mature person to be such a sensitive Newtype, but it was an entirely new perspective for an immature person to be such a sensitive Newtype. Now it feels like Quess is the antithesis of Lalah, which is an important distinction to have in a universe where every kind of person exists. Thanks!

Newtype have enhanced spatial awareness as result of amplified pattern recognition via the contextual relationship between the spirit of a thing and the way said thing is manifested of it's core essence/spirit.
" Newtype psychically comprehend people and things. She said no matter how far away they may be...they can figure these things out"-Quess Paraya, schooling Hathaway about the path of awaking the Newtype potential within.
I believe, it works like this:
Once a Newtype focuses, their concentration swiftly and naturally formulates around that focal point, using all the newtypes' basic senses, to actively scan the environment and render real-time spatial mapping of their environment, which is presented as a vivid and functional 3-D visualization within their minds.
This visualisation is not bound to the enclosed confines of a mobile suite cockpit, it is after all, visualization, so it flows like any other form of imagination, only more concise/concentrated.
The more focused a Newtype, the denser a consolidation of concentrated attention they hold, this denseness is comparably heightened definition, it is perception of more detail than what is availed at lower levels of mastery.
    More of my opinion:
For things that are outside of the Newtype's amplified and merged sensory input(all basic senses acting as one thus extending the overall range), the advanced pattern recognition is used to detect secondary forms of concentration, such as distortions in the user's own concentration that are being caused by incoming waves of other people's concentration, their "psychic pressure".
Picture it like ripples on the surface of a pond, the waves of one splash meeting the waves of another, causing an interference pattern that results in a sharp disturbance emanating from the point of their collision, that is "psychic pressure" which travels back to the epicentre of the Newtype's own concentric cluster of radiating attention, causing their focus to shift in disturbance.
...One day, I will lead my own Newtype lab....

I love Quess. She's very misunderstood, and has a great personality. Unlike Chan who has no personality whatsoever. What Amuro saw in her, I'll never know. I firmly believe that Quess did not deserve to be killed, you do not kill off a 13 year old girl for crying out loud! Tomino had serious depression issues at the time which resulted in a kill em all attitude. Thankfully years later, he gave Quess a happy ending in the 5th episode of Gundam Evolve (which took place in the movie) where she remains alive and sane. Tomino must have thought, "Oh my God, what have I done!" , and essentially revives Quess with Amuro calming her down and sending her off to rescue Hathaway. This alternate ending scenario would also probably leave Chan alive, prevent Hathaway from creating the terrorist group Mufti and his subsequent execution (in the novel only), and possibly Hathaway and Quess becoming a couple. I'm not sure if it would change anyone else's fate though. So anyone else out there who likes and supports Quess Paraya like I do, you're awesome! I really do believe her second chance at life will help her become a better person.

Even, if this is six years late reply.
I do kindly respect both Hathaway and Quess. It's not entirely their fault for how they were put there in a rushed manner and how they were being depicted to the viewers. Which none of them were given better background information and persona for their existence. The Beltorchika's Children novel and manga has better insight and perspective between those two, than the OVA of Char's Counterattack. Yet it's quite dark and depressing for how their fates being sealed by the cause of their own actions.
Can't agree more as you said it well for the bright alternative in episode five of Gundam Evolve.
That's why I'm creating my own version of Hathaway's Flash story called, "Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash & Beyond Quess" (機動戦士ガンダム 閃光のハサウェイ&クェスの地平線, Kidō senshi Gandamu senkōnohasau~ei& ku~esu no chiheisen), properly pronounced as "Mobile Suit Gundam: Flash of Hathaway & Quess's Horizon."
In my version, Hathaway is the same as usual for what he does as having major beef with the Federation government and their principalities of how they control the human population. Having "Man Hunters" involved to demonstrate their manpower methods severely.
He does end up being haunted by his past actions and a few spirits he encounters:
Quess Paraya: She learned that Char never loved her and he only used her as a tool; yet a reliable weapon for Amuro and the Federation/Londo Bell Forces. Also, a distraction and diversion for Amuro and the Federation to impede them from stopping Char and his goals of exiling mankind to space.
She blames Hathaway for his cause to her demise. However, she mostly criticizes him for making bad impressiveness to get through, while surviving. Not quite pleased with his attitude that he tends to show (being stubborn, callous in a way, somewhat cynical, yet impulsively reckless) and the kind of actions he does that ends up endangering those around him and himself. Which, he’s going to get the kind of people, including himself killed. She does cares about him and can’t wait to see him as being with him in the afterlife, when he gets there.
Amuro Ray: It’s been confirmed that him and his archenemy, Char have died while stopping the Axcis asteroid from hitting Earth. He’s Hathaway’s righteous voice of reason. Just like Quess, he too does have a saying for Hathaway for the kind of choices and the consequences that he’s going to face and going to end up paying for later.
Except, he’s little more nicer than her. He also listens and understands about his struggles and his pain with the past; but more importantly his mourning moments of Quess. Hathaway is quite bitter and doesn’t enjoy having him around, who’s trying to correct him and advising him of making better choices for him.
He holds a strong grudge with Amuro as he really blames him for being the instigator of Quess’s fate. Her betrayal, her love and her care being under his arch nemesis, Char. His attempted homicide on her (including using his Newtype mental attacks on her), but lastly her own desperate life and death struggle that led to her own demise in the hands of Hathaway.
Quess Paraya (fake): An imposter of the actual Quess who enjoys tormenting Hathaway by both psychologically and emotionally as how Hathaway is driven to meet his fate. This Quess is actually a demon in the form of her that loves to bring Hathaway on an edge with harassment, insults, playful flirts and harsh accusation, whenever he dreams about her; especially when he’s awake and aware.
This phony Quess is what make Hathaway so bitter, yet despises the actual one and possibly feeling uncertain, yet unease for her other self (will get to that one in a bit). Believe it or not, this could’ve been the one that Hathaway was being so egged, yet heavily insulted by this “Quess” in his nightmare from the 3rd Hathaway’s Flash book.
The actual Quess is aware of this fiend, yet she deeply regrets for criticizing and accusing Hathaway earlier about his terrible actions. It saddens her so deeply that she gave this demonic version of herself the power, yet better advantages to torture Hathaway and put him in a worst kind of state, while dealing with the stubborn Federation and their strong refusal to Mufti appealing demands for the changes.
Her only hope is to try alert him in his dream, by communicating about the dangers that’s he going be facing; especially with the evil fake one at certain times. Before her time runs out to leave, she quickly tries to tell him that “help” is on the way. Then, Amuro comes in by voice to let him know that he’s going to lead himself to his own grave.
This version of mine remains the same as the original (including the movie adaption), except it's more of an extended with some new additional and few shocking scenes. But be aware it does end as tragic as the original for you already would’ve know what happened to one of the Mufti members and Hathaway, himself from the third volume of Hathaway Flash that the original Gundam creator wrote those years ago (please forgive me, if I’m being kind of heartless and unsympathetic as I hate it so much to do a thing like that to both Hathaway & Quess 😔) .
No matter how dark, serious, yet dramatic the story goes. There’s some positive, yet heartwarming scenes in this. As Hathaway does finally end up getting together with someone that he has been waiting for, his entire life and it's *her* .
That would be Quess. Except, she's a duplicate (clone) of the original and she has a different first and last name. She pretty different than her actual self as she’s a young adult like Hathaway (25 yrs. old).
This other Quess is beautiful, smart, matured, independent and well-trained female soldier as a representative for their anti-Federation organization (probably, more likeable to the audience and the Gundam fans, than how Quess Paraya, herself been viewed and harshly criticized by them). And the one that really helped her become that type would be, Emerelda Zubin.
Emerelda is her excellent friend, a cool big sister, but most importantly; her surrogate mother. She became a mother figure to this Quess who helped her matured as she looks after her and cares deeply for her as much as she cares about her Mufti friends, including her boss, Hathaway. I’m sure the actual Quess would want a woman like her to be her mom, since she’s much better than her actual mother.
However, the clone Quess doesn't know that her boss and leader is actually her long, forgotten, acquaintance: Hathaway. Eventually, she'll finally discover later on as her memories will resurface. Plus, she ends up remembering about everything that has happened, including her memories of her actual self and her original's death.

So during the climax of Char's Counterattack, there was a particular argument between Char and Amuro that kind of explained and summed up Quess's character a bit more clearly for the audience watching said movie.
Amuro: That's why we have to show the world the light of the human heart!
Char: For a man who thinks that way you were awfully cold to Quess.
Amuro: I'm not a machine! I couldn't be a father figure to Quess! Is that it? Is that why you used Quess like some kind of machine?
Char: So, Quess was searching for a father figure. I see why I found her so annoying...and turned her into a machine.
Amuro: I thought you were more broadminded!
As one can see from the dialogue, Quess was a character who was just looking for a parental figure in her life, because well it's implied that her life had been cold, unsatisfying, and devoid of any parental figures who honestly cared for, spent time with, and/or loved her in any meaningful way. Amuro acknowledged this earlier in CCA, as well as the fact that he could not be a good father figure to Quess, and berates Char for manipulating and using her affections to turn her into a cold, ruthless killing machine during the final moments of CCA.
In a sense, Quess's death and ultimate fate is both a rather tragic and ironic one: all the girl wanted was for a parental figure to accept her and return her affections, and instead it was Char's "parenting" which ultimately led to her demise.

I personally only found Quess bothersome because her character felt rushed. Her "archetype" is pretty common in the Gundam universe. She is a person who only sought her own 'needs' in a sense while the main protagonists (Char and Amuro) are fighting for something greater than themselves.

@@type-0universe756 Hathaway was having a nightmare about himself being lured to his death by Quess, who tells him to come with her. She also tells Hathaway that her fate, being killed by his hands was a misunderstanding and she wants him to come and join her (in death) as she knows he can never take his eyes off of her; especially forgetting her (she's completely "irresistible" to Hathaway's own heart & soul).
Either Hathaway becomes cold-hearted by telling her to "go away" and downright insults her by telling her off about her useless affection and love for Char Aznable (like in both SD Gundam G Generation Genesis & G Generation Spirits HF Story).
Or another possibility is that he's struggling by telling her to stop and leave him alone out of fear or hurt, since he's been constantly haunted with the memories of the past, her mysterious presence (from his mental perspective), her voice, her girlish laughs, her terrible teasing and taunts (that'll probably drive him over the edge, due to his inner pain), etc.
Which that one might be more likely to be true and believable, according to Tomino's actual ideals & expression for the continuation of High-Streamer/Beltorchika's Children (what he actually wanted for Char's Counterattack OVA that Bandai & Sunrise rejected).
She's been haunting him and causing him to make much rash action & decisions that'll eventually lead him to his ultimate downfall and his end.
Except in this case, it may possibly be Hathaway's own misery and guilt (in the form of Quess Paraya) that's slowly eating away at him for how much he misses her. He's probably is blaming and hating himself for failing to save her and bringing her back, when she was last seen alive, while she went all haywire; calling for help and outrageously tries to intervene on the behalf of both Amuro & Char's final standoff.
It didn't help that the Federation congratulated and praising him as a hero for taking her out and possibly using it for their PR campaign to show their "own" moral grounds. It really disgusted him so much and mostly motivate him enough to turn his back on them to join Mafty. Then, ended up becoming Mafty & the Earth's (middle & poor civilians) leader & savior.
PaddyPakku helped made it clear for any of us to understand in his book summaries & review of the HF's novels. Also, helped to clarify the misinformation we all thought about for how it ended for Hathaway & Quess' sour reaction for his action that may seem more of provocative way to hate them.
Gamore provided useful information about the three books in his review of Hathaway's Flash. If anyone is interested to find out how it actually happened, according the Gundam creator Tomino who wrote them.
      link: ua-cam.com/video/25M2eKOMtp0/v-deo.html
(btw, this is what I learned about the nightmare scenario of Quess' invitation of death for Hathaway, that many mistaken for Quess' ghost appearing before his execution and telling him off about his actions & her rejected response)
Many thanks to both PaddyPakku & Gamore for the correction of how Hathaway's story actually went. And also thank you and everyone else for listening.

Oh and theres also unrequited love for her by both Hathaway Noa and Gyunei (who btw was willing to usurp Char JUST to get with Quess). It’s a shame we spend so much time with these new characters instead of Amuro and Char and because of this, we don't seen them evolve or developed trough the movie or how they became who they are right now (this is mostly with Char). ***** Well that is further explored in Hi Streamers which has more back story, since the CCA adaption jumped into a volume ahead if I remember correctly.
But a lot of it is just small details we gain, Char just had the reasoning that people needed to go into space by force. He thought humans would become newtypes that way, as he was taught that theory as a child by his father who basically proposed it. The only way to force people off earth is by dropping axis and making the planet inhabitable.

I'm affraid that explanation of char's behaviour is way simpler - it was all fanservice. They made them hate ech other again because it was 10th anniversary, nothing less, nothing more. They dropped all development from Zeta where he and amuro became buddies and finally forget about lylah, they dropped obvious suggestion from ZZ that Char was responsible for kidnaping Mineva - all because they thought that making full circle and putting them in exactly same situation like in the end of first show is a cool idea. I could live with char making something stupid, but it was so rushed, without context, with missing plotpoints from previous shows and wasting so much time on new and unimportant characters like Quess... At least, the novel and manga of CCA is much better than the OVA, where Chan doesn't exist and nobody gets to see Hathaway's actual reactions after she left him for Char that the Beltorchika's Children version of Char's Counterattack only shows and provided.
The part where he's totally distraught, while being heartbroken of Quess that betrayed his love for her and his desperate cries of attempting to wake her up that happens almost at the end. Not only that, but her death by surprise from him, rather than Chan, herself; even his hollow feelings afterward, hits me real hard.
The OVA CCA does makes me sad as seeing Hathaway with that sad look on his face, while he's watching the Axcis Asteroid being pulled away from his Jegan Suit, along with the "Aurora" OST, playing. Which, really does set well with the downer mood for what happens after Amuro and Char disappears.
I feel bad for him as I feel his pain as a solo guy, myself. Apparently, being single has more advantage than being a couple in Tomino's UC Gundam stories. Except, it can be such a torment to those that are new, yet inexperience with the kind of relationships that starts to draw the line for the plot and its setting that can engage with the kind of audience.
As how it relates to the type of person and the personal life that he or she struggles to bear with.

I don't really despise Quess, in spite of those who actually does. I do feel bad for how she's been depicted as; especially how she was killed off without a chance for herself to be redeemed. The causes for her downfall, along with her demise really seem appealing to the type of audience who really can't stand her or don't even know her character that well. I mean, it's understandable to why she comes out as "annoying" at first and the actions she does that audience sees and view her negatively.
The same can be said and goes for Hathaway. As how he has been portrayed as a poor, young foolish sucker who has been infatuated with her or love-obsessed of her as others claimed him to be.
When the OVA of CCA came out, we saw how Hathaway reacts unwisely. Only trusting in his heart and his love of having a soft spot for Quess as wanting to save her and bring her back into their life (supposedly). Until later on, he kills Amuro's love interest, Chan as a form of grieving heartache and emotional retaliation as he angrily blames her for her interference and her causes that ruined and destroyed the girl that he first ever laid eyes on, who also meant so much to him.
He too, ends up getting the same amount of hate as Quess; just for each of those reasons. Her and Hathaway deserves better than what they been given so far, by the diehard Gundam fans.
There was a review of Char's Counterattack from Space Kaleidoscope for how it described about Tomino's personal outlook with his characters in his stories with the issue of handling the concept between childhood and adulthood, including adolescence.
Plus, it explains the way he has most of his female characters who betrays the type of characters, due to their unbearable emotions that takes over and how they ended up paying the price for their actions, because of the overwhelming feelings they bare and the unpleasant situation they find themselves in.
I agree with others who said that Tomino must've had some serious depression issue at the time and his unpleasant experience with the war from his past through the present has affected him in a way. It's difficult sometimes for someone like him to show as to bring some positive aspect such as, "love" and "happiness" for his Gundam works. Also, relationships in his Gundam arcs doesn't seem to last.
However, he did finally have a change of heart to create a bright alternative for Quess and Hathaway; especially for Amuro in his animated what-if short stories: Gundam Evolve.

I love the current Hathaway’s Flash movie, but it makes me question whether Hathaway is worth rooting for or not. As you’ve said, Quess had to face the consequences of what she had done, because she went along with the wrong side and was doing what she thought was right. While the Federation is clearly doing bad crap in Hathaway, if Hathaway is becoming Mafty Navue Erin just because of what happened to Quess, or if Quess is the main driving force behind Hathaway fighting, can we really call him a good person?
I haven’t read Hathaway’s Flash, so please do not flame me for not knowing how it ends. Personally, I’d love to get to experience the manga in this movie format, so I ask that no one spoil it.

Although the Frame Astray's are Gundams and gain the label.

+Zeta Rise One could argue that her role is simply not to like her. Or rather, not to like the way she does what she does. Sometimes we have to see the wrong way to do things in order to appreciate the right way to do things.

Quess wasn't a bad character but was a terrible person. It was hinted that she could have had newtype powers bordering on the same level as Kamille.
Her impulsive and reckless tendencies along with her selfishness meant that she would have jumped to any side that catered to her insecurities.
Char never cared for anyone but Lalah really and he saw Quess as a weapon. Overall she was a character who very much got what she deserved at the end.

    • @biggamerhead01315
      @biggamerhead01315 Рік тому

Nice. Try telling that to Hathaway Noa, who's been desperately in love with her, since he first saw her at the airport. Who also been mourning, even after her death (when later on, becoming the leader of well-know terrorist organization in his story; for rightful and noble reasons).
Overall, I do agree with that Quess wasn't the worst character and yes, she was awful. But I still felt sorry for her. For how she ended up being the deuteragonist and also a poor sucker, especially in the end. It's too bad, she didn't realize the love she wanted and waiting for has been beside her the whole time. Yet instead, she wanted one of the two men who wouldn't want anything to do with her, except their own enmity with each other.
I guess Hathaway now is the next one in line for Quess to be considered as the "hated" or "worst" character, after everyone saw what he did to Chan Agi (though, I preferred Tomino's original version of who's the actual *one* responsible for Quess' end or even better: his redemptive alternative) and his futile obsession with her.
