As a retired Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician, I highly recommend rethinking your choices. A lot of what you find are inert trainers. Some may be live ordnance. Some trainers contain spotting charges, which may or may not kill you, but can cause serious injuries. If you didn't put it there, leave it alone, and report it to law enforcement.

You need to be within 30 feet to die but even tho if you are like 40 feet away you can still get injured. And also if that is in the lake then there is a high chance that there will be more in or around the lake.
I used to live near what was Camp Breckinridge, Ky. during WWII. To this day, occasionally farmers on land that used to be training areas find live shells. The police call the bomb squad from Ft. Campbell to come and take care of it. A couple families found one while digging out the basement for a house they were building.

The kill radius of the bomb was 30 feet, not the blast radius itself. From what Inknow about bombs (not really that much honestly, so someone correct me if I am wrong) the kill radius is the most intense bit of the bombs explosion, and there people die most of the time when they are in that radius. The blast radius on the bomb that they found would have been a lot bigger, possible injuring some people

If I remember correctly, if a bomb goes off under water the explosion would be worse than if it went off on land, which is why if a grenade goes off people are advised against ducking for cover in the water. I could be wrong about the water thing though.
Looks like a M50 mortar round, but seeing as how this was found in Georgia and these types or mortar's weren't around during the civil war, my guess is it's a training round(the M50A2 or A3 more than likely to be specific) but I'm glad you guy's took the right precautions to make sure everything and everyone was safe. Those don't have a giant blast radius(assuming it's not the training version) and are shot normally in clusters between 5 and 20 rounds on a target. It's definitely World War 2 era, but it's hard to say if it's the M50A1 or the A2/3 training round.
I think they were blowing it out of proportion (pardon the pun). If that thing went boom under water in the lake, the water would have insulated the blast radius to a fraction of it's yield. The only at risk for miles around that thing would have been the divers themselves. Not sure why they had to evacuate a city lol.

It's unlikely they were in any real danger as the primer needs to make solid contact with a flat surface. The odds of that happening underwater are pretty low, though it could still happen due to faults in the mortar. Unlikely, but possible.

Not only that, it’s missing it’s fuse and looks entirely washed out. All that aside you don’t evacuate the city you evacuate that single area in distance of the explosion.
@@dumango4455 You would still want to take as many safety precautions as possible, even if the explosive appears to be completely dead. The only way to confirm that it's dead is by actually examining it and confirming that it isn't a threat, fuse or no fuse. I'm not a smartass specialist, but I'm just saying what would make sense.
Hey guys, “mini missile” is a joking way to refer to it because of the combination of its shape mixed with its size. This person doesn’t actually think it’s a mini missile.
First of all, I think you guys got the message. Next time you find something like that, tipy toe away... far, at least 50 meters from it and call the bomb squat. Looks like a NATO 60mm mortar to me. The East block 61mm is more stubby and the fins look different. Take note the marginal diameter difference. Cannot fire a 61mm mortar in a 60mm tube, but you can the other way around. Problem with that kind of find is that you never know if that thing is still "live" and if it is "stable". If it is unstable, the slightest knock can set it off. It does not look like that tip still have a complete detonator, but rather play coward and feel foolish than become well minced fish food. Under water the shock wave carried by the water will cause serious internal injuries and you will bleed internally, even without a scratch on you.
Well...what do you think artillery does? An artillery shell is a payload carrying device. The most common paylod is an explosive, and they were actually called "bombshells" but the word got shortened.

It's unlikely they were in any real danger as the primer needs to make solid contact with a flat surface. The odds of that happening underwater are pretty low, though it could still happen due to faults in the mortar. Unlikely, but possible.

The only way to confirm that it's dead is by actually examining it and confirming that it isn't a threat, fuse or no fuse. I'm not a smartass specialist, but I'm just saying what would make sense.

First of all, I think you guys got the message. Next time you find something like that, tipy toe away... far, at least 50 meters from it and call the bomb squat. Looks like a NATO 60mm mortar to me. The East block 61mm is more stubby and the fins look different. Take note the marginal diameter difference. Cannot fire a 61mm mortar in a 60mm tube, but you can the other way around. Problem with that kind of find is that you never know if that thing is still "live" and if it is "stable". If it is unstable, the slightest knock can set it off. It does not look like that tip still have a complete detonator, but rather play coward and feel foolish than become well minced fish food. Under water the shock wave carried by the water will cause serious internal injuries and you will bleed internally, even without a scratch on you.
