Waiting for the day Catholic bibles are made as well as Protestant bibles in terms of binding materials and durability.
I'd like to see that happen. I think people are more likely to read a Bible that's bound and printed well.
Looking for leather bound d-r with side stitching and sewn pages. Heard baronies was good, but some said coffee felt bad? Know anything?

@@hassanmirza2392 - I haven't looked at the Catholic Study Bible closely (if you mean the Oxford University Press volume). The complete RNJB I reviewed is a hardback with a glued binding. I think michaelpf49 was thinking of quality leather covers and Smyth-sewn bindings.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I believe the Bible translation used in the U.S. liturgy should be changed from the NABRE to the RSV-2CE.

thank you jdmike. Got my hardcover edition in today and it is great! I prefer the hardcover paper and what I see as a slightly darker font for reading. The leather bound one is just not as good IMO.

I've always liked this one and for $40 it's a pretty good quality and visually attractive. I agree with comparing it to the NET bonded leather. I think it's the Cromwell bonded leather.

Another great review! I really enjoy your videos. I must say the comments on this video were equally excellent, being both informative and fascinating. I do own several versions of both the RSV-CE and the RSV-2CE. Personally I prefer the old pronoun usage in the Old Testament of the RSV-CE. But for study, I go with the RSV-2CE Didache Bible, mainly due to the notes and apologetical explanations. I do agree with you about the attractiveness of the off white paper and book title font. Those are also present in Scott Hahn’s Ignatius Catholic Study Bible but as stated in another comment, we’re still waiting for the completion of the Old Testament. I think once complete, that will be a very good Catholic study Bible that could rival the Didache Bible. Thanks again and please continue to do these great videos.

@@RGrantJones I recently received the Illuminated Journal bible by crossway, its a $30 bible yet the paper from what I can tell is exactly the same paper in my first edition Longprimer Sovereign. The paper is creamy yellow though and not white like the Allan but its totally the same stuff. I did very deep hillbilly bible science 😉 and I'm so puzzled.
Usually a bible with such great paper is found in premiums and usually we are told the reason we pay premium cost is do to that expensive paper. Well I can tell ya if Crossway used this same paper for say a verse by verse wide margin reference bible and put their topgrain cover on it people would be buying them up. I don't understand the paper market cause the Lockman bibles that sale for $100 really need to find out where this paper is coming from and use it on their calfskin bibles.

Nice review. I own this bible and use it primarily for devotional reading. I prefer the Didache bible and The Great Adventure bible (both RSV-2CE) for study bibles. I recently received the brand new bible (gospels only) published by The Word on Fire Catholic apostolate. It is gorgeous! Has interesting notes and artwork. But I have not yet begun using it. Perhaps you can do a review.
Wonderful review again, thank you. This particular edition is probably the most popular Catholic Bible being purchased today; the well-known Catholic apologists, like Scott Hahn, use it, and when I was instituted Lector most of us received a copy of this Bible. It's also the version approved for use in the liturgy for the Ordinariate (former Anglicans). It was a surprise to many, then, when the news came that England and Wales will (probably) be adopting the ESV as the new lectionary for Mass, to replace the Jerusalem Bible. Yet, that could still feasibly change, and if it doesn't it will still be several years before it is implemented. In terms of the translation - would you say the RSV-2CE differs from the original RSV enough to be classed as a new translation in the same way that the ESV is a revision of the RSV but is classified as a new translation? The debate going on now is whether the Catholic Church should really go with the ESV or the RSV-2CE. I contacted Ignatius some time ago to ask for details on the methodology they used (eg. how exactly was Liturgiam Authenticam implemented, and was that their only criterion) and the scholars involved in updating the old RSV-CE to the present RSV-2CE; they did not comment. Finally, I am on my second purchase of this Bible; I bought the first in 2012, and by 2017 the binding had begun to come apart and the maps were falling out. However, the binding seems to be of variable quality; I know several people who have copies of this edition which lay perfectly flat, even in Genesis, whereas my older copy simply fell apart. Once again, thank you for a superb review.
Thanks for this comment, HeartSpeakstoHeart. I hope others read it -- especially those interested in purchasing this Bible and who would benefit from reading about your experience with it. I think the ESV is a mild to moderate revision of the RSV. I haven't examined the question extensively, but my guess is that the ESV is less like the RSV than the RSVCE or RSV2CE are. More changes have been introduced. I'm surprised at what you report about England, Wales, and their lectionary, and I wonder what the motive could be. Is it possible that there's a financial angle to it -- that Crossway offers better terms than Ignatius Press? On the plus side, the ESV (like the RSVCEs) modifies the RSV's liberal choices in an orthodox, traditional direction.
@@RGrantJones Thank you. Yes, it's difficult to know what the motivation is. Unfortunately the Bishop's Conference has procrastinated about the lectionary for a long time, and on several occasions what has appeared to be a firm decision for a change has been reversed and they go back to square one. But the latest decision for the ESV seems to be sticking. It may be because of the traditional choices in the translation, and it may also follow on from the decision of the Bishops in India to adopt the ESV. As to copyright issues, there always seem to be problems. In any case, I would expect it to take another 4 or 5 years at the earliest for a draft lectionary to be produced.
Does anyone know of of a first edition RSVCE that has the annotations at the bottom of the page rather than at the end of the Bible? Preferably in larger print. PS. I noticed the New Oxford Annotated RSV with Apocrypha doesn't even include the RSV annotations at all.

I have this exact bible and am happy with it. I also got it half off because one page in Ezekiel was torn out at the very bottom so I'll miss out on 2 verses. Not like I can't find it anywhere else
I have a first Catholic edition RSV from Sceptre with the same textblock, which I think is a Nelson block. I have a Second Edition (1971) standard RSV from Cokesbury (United Methodist Church) which was actually published by Nelson and looks almost exactly the same - same fonts, same basic layout, but without the Catholic stuff.

Bishop of Hippo, and John Chrysostom (c. 349-407) was the greatest preacher in the early church and Dante's Inferno is an amazing read if you can can work your way through it...it takes some effort, but is well worth it.

Great video! On the Didache Bible, you're right, yours is thicker. It seems that yours is the 2015 edition as opposed to the 2014 which was printed in India. I also noticed that the outer margin is wider in yours. The paper on the 2014 is a bit thinner, the ink more grayish and the the two ribbons are cream. I'll try to weigh it and measure it later. I have this bible and it's very nice. Really like the creamy paper. I just ordered a new one since I screwed up my copy with tabs. I also have the large print new testament study bible. The paper seems even thicker in that bible

Hi, may I ask how many books of the Apocrypha does this RSV contain? Does it have Maccabees 3 & 4 and Psalm 151? Do you have any idea which RSV has all the Apocryphal books other than the The New Oxford Annotated Bible with the Apocrypha : Revised Standard Version, Expanded Edition (1977)? Been looking hard for a complete Apocrypha. Cambridge has one in NRSV but I don't like the NRSV, it sounds..."flat".
Thanks for the question! I show the table of contents at about the 17 minute point. It contains the usual books found in Roman Catholic Bibles -- so, no, 3 & 4 Maccabees, 1 Esdras, the Prayer of Manasseh, and Psalm 151 are not included. 1 &2 Maccabees, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, and Baruch are, as well as the additions to Daniel and Esther.

Thanks for the question, Gisela! It's not uncommon to find sewn bindings reinforced with glue. Yes, the glue could contribute to the fact that the Bible will not lie open.

Just for your information, Scepter has put out its new publication of the R.S.V.-C.E.1, the version that Nelson first published in 1966 and which Ignatius reprinted (the one with the mid-blue coloured covers, which I own in hardback). I ordered the Scepter one because I was expecting it to be in lectionary order, since it is called "The Scepter Daily Bible". It is not arranged by liturgical calendar or secular calendar order. It does not mean "daily" in that way at all, just the R.S.V.-C.E.1 in a somewhat more portable format. I find its type font to be not just small, but peculiar looking, not so hot for reading. It has its charms, though, and it comes in a sturdy, rather think simulated leather cover.
Although I am Lutheran, I find the R.S.V.-C.E.-2, what you review here, to be the most superior form of the Revised Standard Version, although I like the E.S.V. very much, which is basically a variant of the R.S.V.
The superiority of the R.S.V.-C.E.2 over the C.E.1, for me, is not the matter of use of pronouns, which varies between them, but because the C.E.2 reigns in some of the odiously sceptical readings found in the C.E.1, which simply is the same as those in the liberal Protestant editions of the R.S.V. Old Testament.

Thank you, Mr. Arca. I know that. So is the Didache Bible. It also uses RSV-2CE but Mr. Jones made a separate review anyway. ICYMI, he does not just review the translation but other aspects of the Bible as well, like how it was printed [cover and binding, prints, paper, etc.] and the commentaries or materials/articles within that Bible.
Is the RSV-CE (first edition) which you showed in this video have the 1971 NT? I want to get a copy but I am having a hard time finding it. The copy you showed was paperback, was it ever published in a different binding? Thank you.
Fernando - According to the title page, that blue paperback was printed as a hardback as well. ISBNs: 0-89870-490-1 (hardback); 0-89870-491-X (paperback). I find no mention of a revision subsequent to 1966, so it's unlikely it includes the 1971 NT. To make sure, I checked Luke 22.43-44. The 1946 RSV NT and the minor revision of 1959 both include it in the text, and my blue paperback RSV-CE does also. The 1971 RSV NT moved that passage into a footnote. So that paperback RSV-CE definitely does not include the '71 RSV NT.
By the way, I was flipping through the channels a few days ago and came across a program on EWTN that featured Father Mitch Pacwa on a teaching tour in the Holy Land. The Bible he had in his hand looked identical to that blue paperback.
@@RGrantJones Thanks for your good detective work! I do prefer the RSV that retains the archaic language and already have the RSV NOAB, but wanted a Catholic edition. So I wonder if the changes between the 1971 NT and the previous edition are so grossly significant to prevent me from getting it.
@@FernandoSerna1654 - I think the most significant changes made to the RSV in '71 were anticipated by the RSV-CE in '66: They both move Mark 16.9-20 and John 7.53-8.11 from footnotes into the text.

Does it have the verse, Mark 9: 28-29 Why could we not cast it out? This kind only comes out by nothing but prayer and fasting. Most RSVs do not. Also is Luke 1: 28 is it translated as: Rejoice/ Hail full of Grace, or is it: Rejoice In highly favored one.?
Carlton: It includes Mk 9.28-29. Mk 9.29 ends with 'prayer and fasting.' Lk 1.28 has, 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!' Thanks for asking.

Thankyou for the interesting and thorough presentation. The image of Our Lord on the cover of this Bible is not making a "sign of peace", which does not exist; it isa sign of blessing. He is blessing with His upheld right hand, His fingers in the blessing formation that all priests used to use when blessing, and that nowadays the pope and bishops are supposed to use, and still did use in my youth, but nowadays seldom do. That is, thumb and first two fingers upright, two last fingers bent inward. By the way, the Latin "Imprimatur" means, "let it be printed".
My recommendation for fellow catholics, if you guys use the bible for devotions and prayers, why not use the Liturgy of the Hours which is formatted and used exactly for such purpose. It contains psalters, hymns and canticles. The Liturgy of the Hours is taken from the community prayer which was done by the apostles and the early christian community. Please do give it a try. You may call the loh by another name, breviary.
The LOH uses the RNAB of 1986 and the 1963 Grail Psalter. The 1991 NAB revision of the Psalter was so inclusive-language ridden it was prohibited for liturgical use by Rome. All in all, a less than literary rendering of an incomplete Bible, since it is, after all, a "BREVIARY", not an entire Bible.
Did you ever document the changes to text made in the first RSV Catholic Edition, that is the changes from the original Protestant RSV? If not could refer me to someplace that does?
No, I haven't done that. My copy of the original RSV-CE has a table in the back that shows all of those changes. If you think it worthwhile, I could do a short video showing that table.
I haven't come across anything similar for the RSV2CE, but it's possible those changes have been posted to the internet.
@@RGrantJones Oh yeah I forgot! I have the Oxford large print edition RSV Catholic Bible and indeed it has that table in the back. If you have reviewed your RSV Catholic edition Bible, it would certainly be good to mention that in the review. Btw, I'm reading the multi-volume series Ancient Christian Commentary On Scripture by Inter Varsity Press, which uses the original RSV, including a volume on the apocrypha ,followed by various commentary from the church fathers, including some regarded as heretics like Pelagius. Of course the editor will have his biases, both in selection and translation , but it's a very interesting series.

It's 2020 and we still do not have the entire RSVCE Study Bible Old Testament. There really isn't a decent Catholic Study Bible anywhere. And what is there the product itself is often sub-par, and will not last 2 years of use. It is very discouraging.

Amen - When I did a Google search, I was able to find an RSV2CE free Catholic study Bible app ( www.lighthousecatholicmedia.org/app ). I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works. I have a copy of the Revised Standard Version New Testament, the very first Printing in "Popular Hardback" format. It was printed in early 1946. Later in 1946 the mini Leather New Testament came out, which fits in a shirt pocket. I have that too. This is the Edition that is GROUND BREAKING in Bible Translation. It did a couple of things, first: whittled way back on "fornication" while introducing an explicit rebuke to "homosexuals". This sets a trend that Modern Bible Translation generally follows:
(FIRST) eliminate the abomination of Fornication.
(SECOND) introduce the abomination of Homosexuality.
The RSV New Testament was translated during World War 2. One idea is that they had an agenda to increase family making, as a matter of human-husbandry, while eliminating the social concerns of male and female dating and other social interaction that still stemmed from the high standards of the Victorian Era. The World Wars had claimed 200+ million lives around the world. At the end of World War 1, family making feel into decline. Soldiers came home in mass, shy to socialize with the opposite sex, and happy to be with their war buddies, remaining single for life. During World War 2 social scientist were wanting to avoid the lull in marriage, post War War 2, thus the RSV.
Also, during World War 2, our war ally was the Soviet Union, and they had acted to resolve their human-husbandry problems starting in 1933, when the USSR introduced Article 121 of their Criminal Code, banning Homosexuality. The following year they made abortion much more difficult, then in 1936 Abortion was outlawed.
Here is the famous verse from RSV 1946 [to 1970 printings] that removed "fornicators" from the KJV, ASV(1901), Catholic Douay-Rheims, and Latin Vulgate ("fornicat" is a Latin Stem word). The RSV 1946 New Testament replaced the rebuke of "fornicators" with the rebuke of "the immoral" which means who ? ? It also added the rebuke of "homosexuals". This was in 1 Corinthians 6.9.
1 Corinthians 6:9-10: 9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals,i 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, no drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God." [1946-1970 RSV] (footnote "i" besides "homosexuals" reads: "Two Greek words are rendered by this expression" at the bottom of the (RSV 1946-1970) page.)
During the Victorian Era, the KJV, ASV reading of "abusers of themselves . . ." was commonly interpreted to mean "masturbators" and ". . . with mankind" was taken to mean "masturbators with their fellow males" and it was viewed to be a dire problem of boyhood, which could lead to insanity. EVERYONE was expected to get married and raise children during the Victorian Era, else they were considered sub-human, or defective in some way. And dating was a very STRICT proposition, as Father's were under strict concern to keep their daughters away from males, as much as possible.
In 1971 the RSV New Testament was re-edited, and the word "homosexuals" was replaced. However, the popular trend had already spread to other translators by then. And, the removal of "Fornication and Fornicators was also the trend. The NIV + ESV + NLT + other modern translations have a GRAND TOTAL of ZERO rebukes of fornication, fornicators etc, and usually replace those words with the inconclusive "immorality" or "the immoral". The RSV was but one social tool used to push the Baby Boomer Generation forward successfully. And, it's possible they were heavily influenced by the success of Joseph Stalin and the Soviet Union's human-husbandry program of the 1930s. That helped push our own competitive, but similar social Terror Programs. This era is commonly referred to as "McCarthyism" or the "Red Scare".

i guess the darker font on the whiter paper of the other copy is because it is a later reprint, which often looks like "a copy of a copy" which has a tendency to thicken the print quality and each letter can sometimes become less detailed / less slim, since the text "thickens out"... (if you know what i mean....) often, the earliest printings may have a "lighter", more detailed / "thinner", more slim print, and sharper in a way (for instance, the "hole" in an "o" can almost disappear / be killed because later re-prints "thickens" the text)... it is hard to say exactly what printing process cause this..... a question: concerning the edition itself... the 1.ed. (1966) printed the 1946/52 text... but the 2.ed. has it the 1971 text..??
The first Catholic edition of the RSV (called the RSV-CE) was based on the 1946/52 RSV text, but the '46 New Testament was altered. The second Catholic edition (RSV-2CE) primarily modified the '52 Old Testament, but it made some minor alterations to the NT also. I don't know whether those minor changes were influenced by the 1971 RSV NT.

@@fidelispatre - I use a variety of translations. When I’m listening to a sermon, I try to follow along in the speaker’s translation. If I’m studying on my own, I often use a literal translation (e.g., KJV, NKJV, RV, ASV) alongside a more interpretive one, like the New English Bible or the Jerusalem Bible. For devotional reading, I find myself using the KJV or the RSV most often. (When I'm reading the Old Testament, I also often use the New English Translation of the Septuagint alongside whatever Masoretic-based translation I'm reading).
Nice! I find myself going back and forth between RSV 2nd Catholic Edition and the new ESV Catholic Edition. I find it very accurate.
@@fidelispatre - The ESV is somewhat more literal than the RSV, and perhaps more accurate, but I have trouble with some of the changes in English style the ESV translators introduced.

The hardcover IMO is of higher quality. The paper has a stronger cream tint which I personally like and the font is slightly darker making it much easier on the eyes to read.

I'm Catholic. Today Amazon delivered the NIV Study Bible (hardcover) to my door. (My cats would eat a leather bible). I look at what goes for Catholic Study Bibles and I give up. Oh yes, the Ignatius NT Study Bible is there, but will it take another 20 years for the OT to be complete? So I ordered the NIV (Former evangelical who used the NIV) Study Bible. There won't be the 7 books in the 'Apocrypha', I know. (I have plenty of Catholic Bibles). There will be little conflict with Catholic doctrine in the OT, and where it occurs in the NT I'll just ignore that. BTW, I got this hardcover for 30 bucks. The truth is, most Catholics Bibles are not that good.

Happily, she's a cautious jumper and boxes don't tempt her, so they stay safe in their boxes on the upper shelves of bookcases.)

@@odessaxmusicclips6028 - no, it's not in the RSV2CE. The problem is that the same names (1 Esdras, 2 Esdras) are used for different books. The 2 Esdras you're referring to isn't in the Douay-Rheims or the RSV2CE. When it's found in the Latin Vulgate, it's called 4 Esdras. It is included in the RSV New Oxford Annotated Bible, and it *is* called 2 Esdras there.

I have observed that Jewish Bible has a Semitic feel to it, just like Quran. Both are NON-TRANSLATED books, have a fixed canon and are preserved in their original languages, and their stories represent their original cultures. Where as Christian Bible has a very strong Greek-o-Roman feel to it, and is a TRANSLATED book from Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic to Latin Vulgate. It's calligraphy, icons feel very Roman. Hebrew and Arabic have Semitic feel to it. The English translations of Jewish, Christian Bibles, have Semitic and Roman calligraphy, that is their English letters have Semitic and Roman calligraphy. Study Quran has Arabic calligraphy, its English letters have Arabic feel to it.
And since Quran and Hebrew Bible are not translated books, so they have one source and only few translations are enough to read. Christian Bible, a translate book from Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek to Latin, has no single source of translation, so one needs to own multiple copies (different translations like RSV, KJV, NRSV, ESV, NIV etc) of different Bibles (Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox). Catholic Bible translations has more stability to be honest. Orthodox have no fixed canon (divided in Greek, Slavic, Tawhedo), but they have their patriarchs who prefer Greek translation of Bible and do not allow too many translations either, like the Catholics. Where as Protestant Bible translations are too many versions, despite having a fixed canon. Man! Its too complicated. I am sure many Jews and Christians do not know about this complexity.

@@hassanmirza2392 Actually, even the Hebrew Bible does not have one definitive, authoritative textual basis. The chief source is the Masoretic text, but there are other manuscripts that predate the Masoretic text.
When Catholic or Protestant bibles are made, they are based on the Masoretic and other Hebrew manuscripts, plus the Greek Septuagint, plus the Syriac, Theodotion, Lucianic and other rescensions. There’s also the Dead Sea Scrolls. And, yes, the Latin Vulgate is also consulted. And that’s just for the Old Testament!
The New Testament has literally thousands of Greek manuscripts, as well as the Vulgate. It goes without saying that there are variants among the myriad of manuscripts of all the ancient languages, Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, Latin.
Both Catholic and Protestant translations are also influenced by their respective doctrinal biases.

I put a S to make it Her.. if you think it's a misprint.. check most modern and protestant bible .myou should see the same.. the enemy doesn't like It referring To Our Blessed Mother.
