  • A review of the New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSVCE) Illustrated Catholic Bible, ISBN 9780785239635.
This Bible contains the 73 books of the Catholic canon and carries an imprimatur from the conferences of Catholic bishops of the U.S. and Canada. It is a relatively large volume, 9 11/16 x 6 3/4 x 1 13/16 inches in dimensions.
The most unique feature of this Bible is its 515 (or perhaps 513) illustrations 'scanned directly from a notable Latin Bible published in Venice in 1574.' Each illustration 'is accompanied by a caption containing a verse or a couple of verses from the Bible text.'
The Anglicized, line-matched text is arranged in paragraphs in a single-column format. The 9.5 point font is bold and attractive. The words of Christ are in black ink. The outer margin is about 1.8 inches wide, making this edition suitable for note-taking. The inner margin is sufficiently wide so that the text does not drop away from the eye into the gutter.
This is not a reference edition, but the NRSV's text and translation notes are present. It does not feature explanatory notes or book introductions, but it does include a concise glossary and concordance, an index to the illustrations, and seven color maps.
The paper displays a light cream tinge and has a mild sheen. Show-through (ghosting) is visible but not distracting. I estimate the paper weight at 36 gsm.
The illustrated, imitation leather cover is flexible, with four raised hubs. The volume lies open in Genesis.
My thanks to Catholic Bible Press for providing this review copy.

@@RGrantJones the new Schuyler RSV is certainly tempting. I probably won't ever spend $200 on a Bible unless it makes the appropriate Catholic changes like the RSV2CE (e.g. "virgin," "full of grace," "only-begotten," etc.)

@@NnifWald - Even if you and others of like mind don't purchase it, my hope is that if the Schuyler RSV with Apocrypha sells well, other publishers will discover the market for high-end Bibles that include the Deuterocanonical books. The publisher of this Illustrated Catholic Bible may then be encouraged to bring out a goatskin edition, for instance. Perhaps it's a pipe dream on my part.

I am always glad to see an improvement in the choices of Bibles for Catholics. The gold/pattern on the page edges is a bit too much for me, but the illustrations and font seems very nice. And the rest of the Bible seems really excellent as well.
I wish they(or anyone else) would produce a volume containing only the New Testament, so that we could get thick pages, bold, dark print, and yet have the volume in a practical size.

I just got this for my mother. It is an absolutely glorious Bible - everything about it screams respect for Scripture. The cover is elegant, the font is highly legible without being too big, the illustrations are beautiful and the gold edging is just stunning - it is very discretely done and just adds such a touch of class. I have not given the Bible to my Mom yet but I am so excited to do so! Thank you so much for a wonderful review!

I'm not sure I'm so into the pattern gilding but it's surely unique. I love myself a hefty Bible, so the size of this one is in no way a bother to me, in fact I rather like the size of it. I'm not a fan of the NRSV translation, I don't like the gender inclusive language. Other than the translation, this is a very good looking Bible. Zondervan and Thomas Nelson are really putting out some awesome Bible. I would love to have some of the other major translations also in British English as that is my native language in Jamaica (the KJV obviously is already in British English). Sometimes it poses a slight awkwardness reading the American English of the translations. There was a British edition of the NKJV when was originally published, but I don't think that version is around anymore. Also there is an Anglicised edition of the ESV and NIV on Biblegateway, but there is no printed edition of either. @@RGrantJones In my opinion, I think this is where Bible publishing should be focused now. I think we have enough very good English translations, so focusing on the presentation of the text should be their main focus. Thinlines or at least thin and personal or handsized Bibles are what the majority of people seem to want but at the same time they don't want to lose the readability and thickness of the paper. I'm not sure that the physics can work in their favour but that's what they want. Large enough print in a small package where they can take notes and underline with minimal to no ghosting or bleed through. This is what publishers should be focusing on, how can we do this, if it's even possible to get this done. I for one am not the greatest fan of thinlines because of their small print and often things like concordances, full set of translators notes, maps or even references and paper quality are sacrificedto cut down on thickness and if they are included, the font size is so small, it's practically unreadable. That being said, I like the direction publishers like Zondervan and Thomas Nelson are going. You're even getting raised hubs on leathersoft Bibles, two thick double sided satin ribbons and decent paper. All this make for a better Bible reading experience, which is what you want, people reading their Bibles. It's time for Crossway and to a lesser extent Holman to catch up, especially with their ribbons, not Crossway and Holman Bibles have some terrible ribbons and the Crossway has some very tissue thin paper. At least their fonts are very nice, but the comfort print of Zondervan and Thomas Nelson are boss at the moment. They are headed in the right way I believe.

Have this on pre-order here in the UK (out on the 16th Sept they say) and I can't wait...!
Especially as there doesn't seem a lot of choice in quality text blocks for the NRSV.
Love the single column, the wide margin and the illustrations. Only thing I'm not keen on is the ornate gold on the cover. It's a bit like the gold icons on the Ignatius Bibles...so guess this style of Bible ornamentation is a Catholic thing?? I'm hoping the text block might be a good candidate for a plainer goatskin rebind...

Fellow Catholic here. I’m inclined to agree. I just looked up this Bible and the real leather version is also hardcover. What do Catholic publishers have against nice, floppy leather bound bibles? So much effort went into this Bible only to be either artificial leather or hardcover.

    • @krjohnson29

I don't think you'd honestly be able to tell much difference between this imitation leather cover and a high quality genuine leather one. In fact it seems to be much higher quality than many genuine leather versions I have held. I expect it will age quite nicely too, but we shall see.
Personally I no longer can justify buying real leather bibles anymore given the abundance of high quality imitation leather versions these days and the sad realities of modern industrial animal agriculture.

Grant (presuming that to be your Christian name..) please can i ask a favour..?
I was brought up catholic. I'm not catholic anymore after a 'road to Damascus' conversion here in the UK 25yrs ago.. but i'm confused ref the NRSV / RSV / RSV-CE / RSV-CE2...and other 'catholicy' bibles.. i note at the start you mention that there are more books - more material in the NRSV which you compared size-wise.
Is there any way you could put something together explaining to the uneducated in this matter, how all these versions 'sit together' (or not)... which one's are 'catholic versions' - and what on earth that means..?? Just completely befuddled with why all these 'catholicy' type bibles exist - where they come from and why.. and why one is a 'catholic version and one not...
    Many thanks in advance...

the books are the Deuterocanonical books(the apocryphal books)
These consist of seven books: Tobias, Judith, Baruch, Ecclesiasticus, Wisdom, First and Second Machabees(also certain additions to Esther and Daniel)
wich are found in the septuagint(The Greek Old Testament)
      the dead sea scrolls
and in the vulgate( the latin translation of the bible)
and these books are used by catholics
      the orthodox
and i think some sects of the protestants use them
and this is a link for someone explaining why they have extra books in the bible ua-cam.com/video/IUxPTZS7cEY/v-deo.html
note there are more apocryphal books used by orthodox sects alone like
      psalms 151
      3 - 4 Machabees
the book of jasher , enoch etc

    • @RGrantJones
      @RGrantJones  2 роки тому +10

Interesting question! I believe the RSV New Oxford Annotated Bible (NOAB) started the trend toward Bibles with a larger number of Apocryphal works. The RSV NOAB was intended to be useable by Eastern Orthodox, Catholics, and Protestants. As a result, it includes 3 Maccabees, 4 Maccabees, Psalm 151, 1 Esdras, the Prayer of Manasseh, and 2 Esdras, works that aren't normally included in the Catholic canon. The NRSV version of the NOAB also included those books. And now one can find other editions of the NRSV that include all the books in the NOAB, such as the one I showed in the video. You might call them ecumenical Bibles rather than Catholic Bibles.
Catholic Bibles will include 73 books, rather than the 66 books of the Protestant canon. The additional books are listed in kinyou z-nn's comment, and those books appear in the order shown in this video. The ecumenical Bibles I mentioned above typically place the Apocryphal books in a separate section.
Older Protestant Bibles such as the Geneva Bible and the KJV originally included all the Deuterocanonical books, plus 1 and 2 Esdras. Since the 1820s, KJVs with the Apocrypha have been harder to find, but Cambridge currently publishes an edition of the Cameo with them all. I believe the Revised English Bible is typically printed with this set of additional books in a separate section -- a larger set than the Catholic Deuterocanonicals, but smaller than the collection of books bound into the ecumenical Bibles.
Further complicating matters is the fact that a few multidenominational translations have Catholic editions. In the 1960s the text of the RSV New Testament was modified and, when printed with the RSV Old Testament with the Deuterocanonical books placed in Catholic order, it became the RSV Catholic Edition. More modifications were made in the first decade of this century, I believe, -- especially to the Old Testament -- and the RSV2CE was born. Something similar was done with the NRSV and the ESV, so there are now Catholic editions of each. So the RSVCE, RSV2CE, NRSVCE, and the ESV-CE were all originally translated by committees composed largely of Protestants, but they all include the Deuterocanonical books in Catholic order.
The Douay-Rheims, NAB, NABRE, Jerusalem Bible, New Jerusalem Bible, and Revised New Jerusalem Bible all started life as Catholic Bibles.
I've typed largely this off the top of my head, making minimal use of reference works, so the above may include errors. But this channel has highly knowledgeable viewers whom I trust will correct my more egregious misrepresentations!
