  • Filmed on Tuesday, October 22 2024, I drive around downtown Toledo, OH to see what's going on.
The first American presence in the area was Fort Industry, built in 1805.
After the Treaty of Detroit in 1807, local tribes ceded what would become Southwest Michigan and Northwest Ohio to the United States.
Settlers entered the area until 1812 when British forces raided the area with Native American allies. Resettlement resumed in 1818.
In 1824, the Miami and Erie Canal began construction with the purpose of connecting Cincinnati to Lake Erie. At the time, there were no highways in the state of Ohio, and goods produced locally had great difficulty reaching east of the Appalachian Mountains.
The towns of Port Lawrence and Vistula merged in 1833, forming the city of Toledo, to compete to be the ending terminus of the canal.
The name was selected by Willard J. Daniels who said, "Toledo is easy to pronounce, is pleasant in sound, and there is no other city of that name on the American continent."
The canal built the final terminus in Manhattan, Ohio, one half mile north of Toledo, but they placed two sidecuts before the terminus - one in Toledo and another in Maumee.
The Ohio and Michigan territories fought the almost-bloodless "Toledo War" over a narrow strip of land from the Indiana border to Lake Erie. The strip was between just 5 and 8 miles wide but was claimed both by Ohio and Michigan. Militias from both states were sent to the border but never engaged. There was only one casualty in the war - a Michigan sheriff who was stabbed in the leg by Two Stickney during the arrest of his brother One Stickney.
Major Benjamin Franklin Stickney, father of the brothers, was instrumental in pushing Congress to award the strip of land to Ohio. In a compromise, a large portion of the Upper Peninsula was awarded to Michigan while Ohio would receive the land in dispute.
Stickney Avenue in Toledo is named for Major Stickney.
By the time the canal was finished, boats had become too large to use the shallow waters in Manhattan and the sidecut through Toledo became the primary route to Lake Erie.
The 1920s were an exceptional boom period for Toledo as it became a railroad hub and an industrial center. Due to dependence on manufacturing, the city was hit hard during the Great Depression.
The postwar boom brought prosperity back to Toledo in the 1950s and 60s, but the slump in American manufacturing destroyed many jobs in Toledo and caused a depression of the economy into the 1980s.
In 2014, a toxic algae bloom formed directly over Toledo's water intake pipe in Lake Erie which made all city water unusable. More than 500,000 people were without public water for three days. The Ohio National Guard was brought in to deliver 10,000 gallons of water after all local bottled water was depleted.
Toledo is home to minor-league sports teams including the famous Toledo Mud Hens baseball team which began play in 1896.
The popular phrase "Holy Toledo" originated as a reference to the city's grand array of church designs.
John Denver wrote the song "Saturday Night in Toledo, Ohio" in 1967 after arriving in Toledo and finding no nightlife at 10pm. After Denver performed the song on The Tonight Show, Toledo residents objected and Denver cancelled a concert in Toledo shortly after. However, when he returned for a concert in 1980, Denver set a one-show attendance record for the local venue and performed the song with the approval of the crowd.

I agree driving too fast to see anything . No foot traffic, very deserted. Was this filmed on Sunday?

Haven't you noticed, virtually every town and city filmed, has virtually no foot traffic. Seems like most of America just sits on the couch playing with their keyboard and screen.

Been thru Toledo a number of times. Found it to be very clean and well maintained. A really decent walkable downtown with a lot of beautiful historical buildings and friendly people

Love your content, but again, just want to know why no people anywhere? You log countless cities and towns, same deserted streets and suburbs. Where is everyone. Not exactly places tourists would want to visit as there is nothing to do, where do you grab a bite to eat? Watching your travel series has been a real eye opener, what a depressing place the US really is.

The population of Toledo is 250k people, so I guess you should call the Toledo Police and submit 250,000 missing persons reports
