- Episode 1 in our Iliad series (yes, you read that right!) here on the channel focuses on the context you ~may~ need to understand Homer's famous poem. I mean, what classicist isn’t constantly screaming about "The Iliad" to budding new academics? It seems all of us have a tendency to tell you that you should love The Iliad before explaining - in a clear and simple way - the incredible narrative that is strung together through Homer’s whimsical poetry. The story itself is enough to convert any casual historian into a full-blown fan of Homeric verse because it encapsulates everything a reader wants in a legendary tale: romance, humour, divine intervention, supernatural phenomena, and of course - a battle of epic proportions. Hopefully by the end of this series you'll be able to see all of these qualities woven into every single line Homer once sung to an audience of excited Greeks, telling them all of the decade long Trojan War to rescue Helen from the hands of Paris (... well, really Aphrodite, but we'll get to that).

When you made the comparison of remembering the Iliad to remembering an album, I got a very clear mental image of a bard at a party saying “And now I’d like to share with you some material from my new epic”, and someone in the back just yells “Play Iliad!”

Epically new perspective to this great classic, I must re-readed asap thanks for you!!! I didn't new about the other lost poems, such a shame. This is why I love the classic, and the research about them, it's the inmortality itself to every story: despite the years resurrects everytime they are told or talk about even in diferents versions. I just found this series and am SO excited to start!! Question for you- is it better to watch the videos before or after you read the chapter? I just have missed where you said that!
I homeschool and my son has been obsessed with Greek Mythology, which in turn has made me obsessed as well!! We’ve read children’s versions of the Iliad and The Odyssey, but now I want to read the real deal!! It would be so fun if you reviewed Greek mythology and classic literature for children!! You should totally do a series on that!!
I've been meaning to reread the Iliad for months now and I guess this is a sign that it's the perfect time!! Looking forward to the rest of this series. It always shocks me whenever I reread the Iliad, just how short a span of time it actually covers.
Doesn’t it just?! I’ve been reading it over and over again for this series to pick and choose my favourite moments to mention, and the part that really gets me is just how much they do in a SINGLE DAY?! If Homer told us the events of another week the bloody poem would have been an extra 10 books! 😂
I probably should've began with the Iliad, but I read the Odyssey first since I already had a copy handy. I ended up LOVING it. It may just be my favorite book. It was surprisingly easy to read and enjoy, even for someone like me who's new to classical literature. Now I've come to the Iliad (by the same translator as my copy of the Odyssey) and I'm just hopelessly lost lol. I think your companion series here will be tremendously helpful for me. Thank you so much~
If you loved the Odyssey (yay!), you’ll adore the Iliad!!! It’s a different tempo and a different type of story, but once you get into the rhythm of it, it’s MAGICAL ✨😍

Thank you for making these videos. I've read many classics but this one is very hard to follow. I'm on book 3 and need some guidance. I always read all my books out loud because if I don't my mind tends to wander. I've heard it suggested to read this book out loud so no problems there. Although the names are hard to pronounce. Thanks again I'll be reading each book and watching your corresponding videos. 😊

Started my own personal English Literature course. Composed of books from library. Starting from Homer to today. Iliad os first on list. ; Odyseey Greeks Romans Middle Ages Renaissance Shakespeare Victorian 18th 19th. Several books in each Period. Shooting for a Year.

Thank you for this valuable information. Question: Since the Iliad is a poem, did it rhyme in ancient Greek? To make it easier for the bards to remember?
Wow, I only just commented a few days ago on your Diomedes video that I just finished reading The Illiad...then you made this 🤣 This video helped me get my head around missing things like Memnon and the wooden horse. I knew the wooden horse wasn't in The Illiad, but I started reading The Odyssey straight after and was thinking where on earth is Memnon, the wooden horse, and the siege of Troy 🤯.
If you read The Aeneid by Virgil, you can see the wooden horse episode from the Trojan's point of view! Unfortunately the greek side doesn't survive (which continues to hurt my soul haha)

Hector, and then later Diomedes (I’ve been a soldier, trained & taught MMA & martial arts for over 20 years, so I like to imagine myself as a warrior in the “Iliad”. I don’t think I’m good enough to be an Achilles or Aeneas, but I think I could be a Diomedes and have one bad a** day told about after, lol). But, even though I’ve read “The Odyssey”, it’s “The Iliad” that makes me admire Odysseus’ cunning and warrior ethos. I feel like kind of a bandwagon-rider because everyone likes Odysseus though.

I like that you emphasize that this is poem meant to be sung. Is there a way to donate to this channel? I think viewers of your videos are rich people and will pay good money if you have a donation button. I am following Yale University's syllabus to read chapters 1 to 9 of Iliad. One thing college class exams are kin to is how to get the most out of reading. It is not about comprehension because high-end college students already have 100% comprehension of everything. And I think what this book is about is religion indoctrination. Sometimes religion indoctrination is entertainment, even today, such as superstar evangelical American "priests". These dinner edutainments basically forced everyone to believe Zeus was real back then. To enjoy the Iliad, I kind of have to force myself to believe Zeus is real for a moment. But it is not easy for today's atheists students that is the majority of high-end schools. It becomes hard word to "enjoy" the entertainment. But work pays, and that is why people will donate to you because they are rich people that work hard. If you can just have a donate button.
I love “The Iliad”. And I can’t recommend the Stephen Mitchell English translation. As a former soldier and MMA fighter and teacher, Mitchell really gets the bravado and warrior mindset of the warriors of “The Iliad”.

Are you aspiring to have an academic career? You obviously would succeed, but maybe you're doing it for the love?
I am surprised that bards memorized a book for people's entertainment. I know that in year 1000AD (Viking era), iceland's speaker of the parliament was required to memorized the entire law book of the country and read it out loud, and they call that person literally a "lawspeaker". In the old world, written words on paper were viewed as inferior to spoken words by huamns, kind of like modern people shunning AI computer-generated words and value real-human's writing as superior.
Why do you think that we should read The Iliad if it was told in verse? Why not start with an audible version of the epic poem? Then go on to the written version.

If you want an Audiobook of the Iliad, the version of Emily Wilson's verse translation read by Audra Macdonald, released in 2023, is good.

Dear Erica, Troy is the City, Ilion is the Akropolis of the City of Troy (Τροία). Αnd Hesiod wrote that Homer was hundred
years before his time. Hesiod was born in Askra, Boeotia, about 650 BCE. The little town stil exists by the exact name.
