In early 1974 I was a 23 year old Saddle Bum, traveling around the country as a horse trainer, Bronc Stomper, Rodeo Cowboy, just basically doing whatever I could to earn gas and food money, as long as it had to do with horses. In San Diego, I hired on with a Harness racing stable as a groom for a couple of horses in their racing string. We moved up to LA for the racing season at Hollywood Park. Not too long after we got there the Trainer/Owner of the stable told me that he had a prospective buyer coming to see one of the horses I was taking care of. A fellow by the name of Tom T Hall. Now I had been a big, big fan of T's for several years, and the prospect of meeting him tickled me to death. At 23 I had never actually met anybody famous, let alone one of my heroes like Tom T.
On the day he was supposed to come, I got the horse out early to loosen up and work out any kinks before the prospective buyer got there. When I returned from a few laps around the track in a Jog Cart, Mr. Hall was standing in the shed row, wearing jeans and the most dilapidated worn out cowboy hat I'd ever seen. I drove up, unchecked the gelding and looked at My idol and mumbled, more than said, "I almost didn't recognize you with a hat on". I was so in awe of him, that was all I could get out of my tongue tied mouth. How sad is that?? He looked at me and said "Most folks don't recognize me without it". Then I met Miss Dixie and the trainer asked me to take them for a couple of laps around the track. Here I was jogging a Standardbred Pacer around the track at Hollywood Park with Tom T Hall and Miss Dixie as passengers. I let the gelding stretch out to almost racing speed, and away we went. Me standing up in the Jog Cart and them holding on tight. After two laps we headed back to the stable. When we arrived at the stable, i jumped off the cart and quickly unhitched the Check Rein that holds a Harness Horse's head up higher than normal carriage, because this particular gelding, while being a total sweetheart otherwise, would Sunfish and flip over backward if the Check Rein was left in place too long after stopping.
You may imagine that I was seeing the LA Times headline..."Idiot Groom Causes Death of Country Music Songwriter and Singing legend and His Wife Through Negligence", and you would be correct.
Needless to say all went without incident. Mr. Hall shook my hand and said "Thanks for the ride". I said "You're welcome Sir", and that was it. He didn't end up buying the horse.
I had ample opportunity to tell him how much I admired him and his work, but being a kid in the presence of one of my idols, I was completely tongue tied, and doing more than grin like a moron was more than I could muster.
That's my Tom T Hall story, and every word is true. If i were gonna make one up, you can bet it would be a much better story than the real version.
Awesome singer/songwriter... I got the chance to see him in concert in the 1970's, when toured Australia. His wonderful music will be his legacy long after he's gone.
Love this interview of Tom T Hall. Eddie Stubbs always does a fantastic job.
Eddie Stubbs is terrible. He talks more often than Tom T. Hall does.

Here it is 2/6/22 and as I watch this video and my heart aches for the loss of Tom T. And Miss Dixie I can't help but think that Tom T. died the same as he lived his life, on his own terms! God Bless all!

I enjoyed this series so much; learned things I didn't know about Tom T. Hall and things in general.
There will never be another like Tom T. He is a true original and I love his music.

Sad to say Miss Dixie Hall, the renowned writer of bluegrass songs and wife of Country Music Hall of Fame member Tom T Hall, died from a brain tumor on January 16, 2015 at the age of 80.

Jesus Christ, Eddie needs to be quiet. I've watched this entire interview, and he takes up at least half of it with his lectures and "witty" comments (which no one laughs at). The interview is about Tom T. Hall, not about him.
Im pretty sure this interview was broadcast on radio too and as the radio host he has to talk more than if this was a regular interview
