A trend I notice in a lot of these commentaries between very skilled players is that one often gets very favorable timings on their powers, which typically snowballs and has a decisive effect on the outcome. Jokas spent a Sideslip, which fed Eye's Trail of Woe, which Eye was able to pop to devastating effect while Jokas was not getting charge from the counterattack. Power timing and charge management seems to be an underdiscussed aspect of high-level play. Excellent replay and commentary!
Was thinking exactly thing while Bangs was discussing Adder's 'advantage' in getting his power earlier, he charged Koal to his super which he got to deploy while giving away no charge!
Also when mangs says that Adder is better than Coal I dont think he factored high founds, where power meter charge twice as fast. So Adder couldnt abuse his cheap power more than Coal, who still had his firepower advantage
The thing I usually notice is that the high level players tend to be VERY good at defensive placement in the early game that first strike advantage tends to frequently back fire and snowball against them. Whomever strikes first is striking into very strong defensive positioning and breaking up their own defensive placement in the process of pursuit and, as you mentioned, feeding power meter to the opponent. You have to be very certain that the opponent cannot bounce back from your first strike if you decide to go in. Jokas miscalculated the power of his first strike and it just kind of snowballed from there.
Well, that just means that the Adder just didn't do enough with his power. If you get the privilege of attacking first you should always use it to it's fullest Because in this game, taking damage charges the meter REALLY fast
A cool thing to note is that Koal actually has slightly better Air units than Adder. Koal gets his road boost without penalty because Air Units don't get terrain stars in the first place, and since Air Units already have excellent mobility, pair that with Trail of Woe and you can actively go for engagements overs Roads and get that slight damage boost without worrying about being stuck on a 0 Terrain Star area.
It's interesting, and I think something a lot of players don't think about, which COs have technical unit type advantages/maluses due to how their powers interact. Koal can have some downright nasty bombers due to this, or more cleanly win a helicopter or fighter duel thanks to his roads bonus.
I don't think it matters that much in general, let alone this map, because positioning benefits air units alot more than firepower bonus. Bombers and fighters doesn't need it, transport can't use it, if a battlecopter can have the choice to either strike on a non-road tile or a road tile, that will be niche of a niche advantage, and if copters can utilize road bonus more often, it will be rather obvious from looking at the map rather than people having to debate over it. And it definitely matters a sliver or maybe even none in this matchup.
@@aereonexapprentice7205 Trail of Woe road Bombers can 1shot Tanks and anything below them on cities, and in most maps Roads are adjacent to cities, making it a common occurrence. With a single com-tower, those same bombers can now 1 Shot Anti-Airs and Medium Tanks on cities from roads. If you can't see the value of that, no matter how """niche"""" it is, then I can't help you.
In the US, the interstate highway system is built with straight stretches to serve as emergency runways in the case of plane troubles. So, Koal's Planes doing better over Roads... kinda works?
One thing I've noticed about high funds (and playing as Colin in regular) is that you have to treat infantry like they're a lot more valuable because you can pretty much always afford better units. Anytime you have to replace an infantry that gets shot up, that's a tank, anti-air, or whatever that you won't have. Kind of weird, but seems to be how it works.
Best match in a long time. And same critique I gave Deejus: if you can, take notes from Sports commentary, and try to describe the map for non-visual consumption. If there's strong side/weak side, always mention movements relative to that. Describe the dimensions of the map. Use cardinal directions to describe movement, pressure, positioning, etc. Very glad AW is getting so much viewers, its a fantastic IP.
Great choice of background music. Heroes of Might & Magic III OST is so good. In hindsight it's weird you haven't used it sooner (though maybe I forgot/missed it).
This honestly looks like an amazing map for rockets, I'm kind of surprised not to see any of them going into the midgame. You can sit one on the shoal next to the base behind the pipe and it covers the com tower and two cities, while being impossible to get to except by air units, but it's also covered by the carrier. But maybe it slows down the tempo too much to buy one.
@@Dru_Stephan I do agree that in general the map is too open for rockets and that they are easily killed. However, I still think that putting one behind the pipe should be pretty easy to defend in the early game until a whole bunch of air units arrive to break through. That spot is several turns away from an airport so it may take a while for an answer to show up, and it's pretty well protected as far as early aggression is concerned. There's only one tile to attack it from and it's surrounded by sea so unless there's a bomber to break the tile it should be able to survive less concentrated attacks. Of course, if the base is getting overwhelmed it doesn't matter if it's a rocket or another unit. It wouldn't be good in the long term, but it might be enough to delay a com tower cap for several turns as well as the other two cities in range. Depends on whether it delays enough income to pay for itself over an artillery, I don't know. I could be completely wrong.
For me this match was the definitive proof that income advantage doesn't matter at all reached a certain high amount of funds The difference between 7000 and 9000 income is huge, but here we can see that the difference between 50000 and 70000 didn't amount to anything. Jokas consistently had a huge income advantage and it didn't help him much even as he spammed easily counterable air units
Yep. Because when income is not the limiting factor, it's the number of bases. I the end you need bases to create units and there is only a set number of bases on each map.
I think Jokas moved the BOMBER into the anti-air range because at that point, better a 2HP BOMBER there rather than anything. Also, it "distracted" from the cap going on nearby. Of course, at that point the capping didn't really matter, but sometimes we need to make a gamble to have things going Great match!
Honestly, that's one thing I like about low-level matches with inexperienced people. Like, in high-level matches such as this one, it's often just one person gaining the upper hand and then absolutely crushing his opponent. In low-level fights there more room for suprises, like, a player could have a massive advantage but then might make a small mistake that allows the other to come back and take over.
When this game was played Jokas was dealing with another 4 tournament matches, one vs me included. I was discussing it a bit with him and they were too many games for him to manage at once, it's a shame.
Excellent commentary! There was so much going on in this game it was very hard to keep track. Just a lot of production capability so high unit counts. Also, the HoMM3 music was chef's kiss!
You know what, Mangs? I wish these matches had a "score" counter in them, so that you can "lose" but with a lower score than your enemy basically What this means is "Was this a clean win? Did he have a hard fight? Was it completely hopeless or did he have fight in him left?" basically would encourage the losing players to play until the end, maybe make some desperate counteroffensive or the enemy making some blunder which could cause him to climb back or even end in a tie. It's really sad that we don't get to see these battles happen until the end... And of course scores would give you something in return in tourneys... if there's a tie in victories - the guy with the bigger score wins, or maybe the guy with the bigger score gets to choose his commanding officer or if he wants to start second or first.
I'm confused as to why neither player picked Jake. Most of the fighting on the map is on plains tiles, and his movement boost with block rock is incredibly powerful, so it just seems weird to me that neither player picked him as a CO.
I'm not sure on the rules. Do you know if they are allowed to pick CO's during tournaments? I assumed it was character locked. But I guess if it was everyone would be using the "broken" CO's 🤔
