I saw this quote somewhere-
"It's better to let your dog go comfortably a day early, than for your dog to leave painfully a day late."
I just read that today.
Thank you for covering this topic. So many pet owners struggle with this decision & some even refuse to euthanize because they feel some sort of guilt. I can tell you right now that euthanasia is the best gift we can give our furbabies when they’re suffering. Their passing is peaceful & gentle.
Thanks
My cat still was eating but he was in pain from end stage kidney failure. He was drinking a ton and losing so much weight. He wasn't grooming either and was sitting in that meatloaf position. He was staring into space and had horrible anxiety at times and other times was very lethargic. He was very dehydrated too. The Vets told us it was the best choice to put him to sleep. I never want to go through that again. Hardest thing in my life. My poor precious cat. RIP
I am so sorry .. 💔
So sorry I may have to do this in a few days
I’m so glad my cat, shadow is still young (7 years old?) We never knew how old she was when we found her in the forest, but we thought she was about 10 months old. We don’t know her b-day but I love her with all my heart and she does too.
Funny story: One time i was in the bath with the door open and she came in and started to yell at me bc she was scared i was drowning ,but it was literally 1 foot deep
We also have a stupid tuxedo cat who has a lil stereotypical French mustache who sleeps in the weirdest positions, and he’s like 3 years old and oddly photogenic?
We have a white cat with black spots. She’s 19 and rly sweet
Timely. Made appt for tomorrow for my nearly 22 yr old cat. She will still eat squeezable treats, but no self care, extremely weak, and cannot make it to litter box. Doesn't seem to be in pain. I hesitate to take yet I know it is imminent
Toughest decision ever.
Bless you! It is such a hard decision. I am very sorry. My cat just turned 20
Aww, such a sad time for you and your family. Their quality of life is so important in making this difficult decision. I feel as if they sometimes tell you with their eyes, "Please do this for me because I can't do it for myself. I'm so tired. Please let me go." If she were outdoors maybe she would take herself off somewhere to lay down and breathe her last breath. We've had to make this decision for ur dog in August. He was going on fifteen. What wonderful parents you are. Look what a great long life you've given your special kitty.
They have appetite meds that work quite well. Might try it and see if kitty gets stronger ❤
Why can't you people understand; IT IS NOT YOUR DECISION!!!
AGAIN, NOT YOUR DECISION! You shall not kill, always give effort to support life and cherish every moment of it . Even illness, disability is part of entire package called life.@@remyoverland4049
I had a dog who lived to be 15 and then he stopped eating. Two years prior he had stopped eating his kibble, and since then I had been putting extra stuff in his food to inspire him to eat. The one thing I learned from this was to be aware of the dogs limitations as they age. Prior to this my dogs had died much earlier and did not experience old age really, but if they do reach their golden years, it is important to be aware of new limitations as they age. For my dog it meant walking slower, and not walking as far, and helping him in and out of the car much more to make sure that he did not jump. I also would help him up and down the stairs.
I just got a carpeted ramp for my old boy. Works great for in and out car.
Our 11 year old dog suffered a stroke. Her hind legs basically deteriorated. We help he4 walk... she still has a willingness to live. She eats, takes care of her needs when going potty. She just needs extra help now to get around.
There are also meds they can take to spur on their appetite. I try that first bf putting to sleep.
My 14 year old dog had arthritis until i changed her diet from kibble to raw mince - all stiffness gone 👍🏻
@@irisortiz9057 Bless you! We don't kill our other family members if they become disabled and needing extra help does not it is not a "quality" life (a term I do not care for). This doggy lived to 17.5 and I helped him walk outside to go potty the last weeks of his life. I make slings out of old tote bags to help support his back end. I did use some doggy diapers at the end, b/c sometimes he would not make it to the door; and that helped make things easier. It's a little easier for the boys b/c, but still can help if you need. He loved to eat, hang out in his bed with his people, and get massages. Good luck!
We had to do this last Monday. It is the hardest decision ever. She had been fighting cancer for a few years and taking medication four times a day for the last year. We was seeing our vet monthly this last year. Our vet told us it was time. I cried telling our vet we can handle it, he told us your girl can not any longer. Thank you for this video and the comments, it helps. I miss her dearly 😢
As a pet owner, I promised the best for my dog. So I know that I must let him go someday rather than to hold onto him while he suffers horribly. But my heart will always make excuses against euthanization because I will selfishly want his companionship forever. It's such a hard decision to make.
I feel you, I'm going through the same thing with my 16 year old chihuahua, me and my husband can't do it
I’ve had vets put it back on to me to make that call. I consulted them to determine if I was being reasonable or not, not to have a shrug of the shoulders and a blank look 😢
I‘m sorry to hear that. I hope you don’t have to go through such decision making situations too many times.
It’s tough for the vets too, they have to perform euthanasia so many times. They do it because it’s their job but I don’t think they enjoy either, even though they know they do it in the pet‘s interest. I have known a few depressed vets because they often don’t get the emotional support they too deserve.
blind, half deaf, cognitively impaired with lots of “zoning out” episodes and confusion, severe arthritis, unable to manage stairs without damming, 14 yr old pit mix. getting close, even with all her meds.
Hmmm sounds like a lot of older people I know. There is hospice care for dogs.. and there should be more.
great video, and obviously important to you as you recently made the decision. we have a girl who was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure. though we hope the time to decide is down the road....we always know with our furbabies the time usually comes!! and how painful it is!
My cooper has the same problem. I give him Hawthorne berry to strengthen his heart.
hmmm, I'll check this out! thx
Yeah, shot from hell is extremely painful that's why they use another shot before it to disable brain from reacting to excruciating pain. Bigger digs get tied up , muzzled etc. Choose effort next time, bc YOU SHALL NOT KILL. See how much better it feels... After all , congestive heart failure is result of prolonged poor oral hygiene and it is not dog's but only you're fault .
I have 2 CH cats..”wobbly kittys”. Button(4), Bee (3) . I’ve had them since about 4 weeks old. Button is a severe case and Bee is mild to moderate. And at 2 yrs old they both developed juvenile cataracts. Both came from the same location in my same dying ghost town I live in where they were gonna be tossed out in the heart of winter for the coyotes to eat. A year apart I rescued the 2nd one.The vet I took Button to was impressed and always gives me props for saving, dedicating myself to 2 very challenged cat. Next vet I saw cause my vet was unavailable on that day told me he was useless for a cat and no quality of life and think about euthanizing him. I gave a few angry words and walked out. His first vet has been amazed at how much hes thrived from a 3 week old starving, freezing and sick with respiratory infected to a 4 yr old boy. Bee was found a year later with to be the same outcome as Button..toss it for the coyotes..I stepped in and took Bee too. My vet was shocked I now found 2 a year apart, starving, freezing and resp infection, same gray color, same location, same town. They have their challenges but I do everything to accommodate their disabilities. My home is designed for crippled kittys. I have pet Insurance for them and if anything happened to me they are entrusted with financial stability for the rest of their precious lives. Just cause they have their disabilities I feel they are entitled to life just as much as any other kitty. Don’t give up on a disabled kitty that doesn’t know they are different then a normal cat. The love and affection in return is so special. Much love to all from Button, Bee and Me❤️
Thank you. Tomorrow, I will be saying, "Fare Thee Well" to my darling companion, Julie. She is a Flat-Coated Retriever, 15 years old, and she has lost quality of life for the last few days. She is completely incontinent, immobile, and the pain med is not managing her pain. She now has a sore, next to her backend, that I just discovered. All the memories are rushing into my mind. My vet is coming to my home, to release Julie from her broken body. I will miss her forever.
I’m sorry for your loss❤
I needed to hear this video and I thank you so much. My Shih Tzu is failing so fast and losing body functions and many other things and my heart is broken to make a decision. God bless you.
I am sad with you. I can relate to what you are going through, as I am experiencing the same thing with my Afghan hound age 14. My heart is breaking 💔
@@tammy5666 thank you sweetheart, so hard, but prayers for you also and strength to get you thru this bad time also. Keep in touch
My Shih Tzu Princess will be going over the rainbow bridge today to be with her Daughter Ruby who l lost last year July 2022. Such a hard decision ,she a little fighter ,l know she wants to be better and live for me & my son 😭😭😭
This is such a worthwhile topic. Another indicator for me was isolation. I had adopted one our hospital’s blood donor cats, so I never really knew his true age. He was in renal failure, but was using his litter box and eating/drinking. My kids kept telling me, “ Mom, it’s time for Barnaby to go”, but I didn’t feel it was his time. When he began seeking unusual places to hide, that was the indicator to me his time was near. Having worked as an RVT and LVT, seeing everything and anything and performing countless euthanasia’s, I agree, it is a personal decision and no one should ever feel wrong in seeking guidance or assistance from their veterinary professionals. They are there to help you reach whatever decision you make.
Lucy, I’m so sorry for your loss.
Oh yes, I tend to isolate as well. I tried to get the mail once. Broke down crying because she loved to go get the mail. I need to buck up and try again.
My dogs been isolating herself. Hiding herself. She has a mast cell cancer. Vet told us to put her down when the time comes, didn’t knew it was coming so faster!
@@gurjotsingh8934I’m sorry for what you’re going through and whatever decision you decide to make will be what’s best for your doggy 🙏🏽
The last week of May on my way home from work I called to have my cat put down. He had not eaten as well as he normally did, avoided me, had not greeted me at the door for the last three months. When I got home, he greeted me at the door and ate like he use to. He just turned 20 and is doing good for a 96 year old man. The vet said “as long as he is eating and drinking it is not time”
There are also appetite meds you can try. I try those bf putting to sleep.
@@dianasimplifies he is 20 years old. When I am 96 the last thing I would want is someone cramming a pill down my throat
@@remyoverland4049 I understand. I have never used it but there is one you can rub on their ear. It was just a suggestion 🤷🏻♀️ I have pilled several cats for years. They easily get used to it and it's not a big deal. Again just a suggestion if your pet refuses to eat but is getting around ok. Someone else might read the suggestion and look into it for theirs if you could care less. 🙄🙄
@@dianasimplifies thank you! He is doing great and has been for months now. He gets sun-q fluids five days a week. He use to run, but I have perfected it and now he just lays next me. I try chicken, baby food or fancy feast when he needs it.
Who is the vet that knows when your cat should be killed?.. Another false prophet?... Always follow your heart , ONLY.
Just put my dog down a couple hours ago, in borderline traumatized
I think very highly of vets. In my experience they have shown greater care for the pain treatment of their patients, better bedside manor for their patients and the pet owners. When I got Lyme Disease I found the Vets were far more informed about it.
That hella sucks o.o yeah vet techs as well as veterinarians HAVE to be informed/knowledgeable on such issues especially since it's a zoonotic disease caused by ticks. Had a whole class on ecto as well as endoparasites each with their own cause for various health implications. I hope you have it under control :(
Thank you so much
Such a difficult thing to think about....I don't want that day to come.
Not difficult because when your dog gets old ill and disabled you just give more effort. Same way you would give more effort to your ill disabled mother or other family member. Do not follow false prophet. Always follow your heart.
I adopted a cat from my local shelter, they said he was 3yrs old and healthy.I came home from work and he was struggling to breathe,I rushed him to the vet and they said he was about 12 yrs old and in full heart failure.I had him for 3 weeks before I had to euthanize him.I called the shelter and they just said "That's too bad".
They knew u wouldn’t adopt a 12 year old car maybe or that’s what they thought …..but on the bright side you gave that cat a loving home for the last 3 weeks of his life 😪rip 🕊
I had a cat named Billy, he was 5 years old. At first he looked healthy, he ate, he slept like other normal cats does. One time he was suddenly in pain, like had a stroke, his hind legs wouldnt move..
So the clinics were closed, we got no choice but to make him comfortable, petting him, the next day, about 9 am, he died after all of the suffering. Sorry Billy, we couldnt save you.
And I know that him passing away is sad, but its easier for him I wish. I cant see cats that couldnt move to live and always have these constant pains. The way he died was dramatic and out of the blue, we didnt expect it. He was always at home, not an active cat but the passing made the atmosphere feels different. This is a quite challenge for me and those who adored him for being a chubby cat.
It’s horrible to watch. My dog is in agony. Screams in pain now and even whilst he is eating he cries. Can’t lift his head when he walks and can only walk 20 meters. Sleeps all day with heavy breathing. We have decided tomorrow we will say goodbye it’s just so so sad. I don’t know why I’m telling you this.
I did just that I let my dog live his dog life to the fullest as long as he was showing me quality of life & I kept him comfortable as long as I can until one day he went on his own in 20 minutes he was gone .
Thank you for the reminder. I always tell my husband they will let us know 😢.
They will let you know what? ... It's about time to be killed and die in horrible torture as phenobarbital is extremely painful... That's exactly why they inject animal with a different (first) shot before phenobarbital is used. It is NOT to take a pain away but disable brain from reacting to pain. Did you know that big dogs are being muzzled and tied to the metal table just in case they'll run or /and defend themselves?.... Use effort next time because, YOU SHALL NOT KILL! Dogs nest to let you know that time of TEMPORARY separation in soon coming. And to let you know that more effort is needed to strengthen eternal bond. They are not asking to be killed!!!
@@atlas79-om1hn my god! I am never doing that to my dog!!!

The problem is, we don't know if my cat is in pain or not, he eats a lot still and we can keep his condition to a minimum, we look after him as best we can but I'm starting to worry it's time to let him go, he's been my best friend and only source of comfort for 13 years and it's hard thinking he might be in pain, it feels like maybe it's time to repay him with letting him be free from the pain
Same
One of my dogs won't pass over lol I'm taking good care of her I guess
Sometimes it’s best to make the decision on your own, my older dog (who by the way could barely walk anymore) started having breathing issues. I took him in, saw a diff vet than my normal, this vet said he needed 9 MEDS!!! 9!!!!! Then when I said it’s time to put him to sleep the guy actually said to me “we do not do that here” as if I was killing my dog off for no reason. I said has it escaped your notice this dog can’t walk? I’ve been picking him up to go out for 2 years 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! He then shut up and did the right thing, 9 meds? Never even heard of that.
Without a doubt the most painful thing I’ve ever had to do was make that decision. Harder than losing some people. I wish I’d been able to save my 1st pup the suffering, but I was hospitalized and didn’t know how bad he was. The 2nd was off and on for a while, then it was much quicker. Still grieving so much cry everyday
we love your advice ❤️
Andrew you are so helpful , I can’t believe how great your advice really is thank you so very much 😊
After 2 days of howling in pain due to a kidney disease, my dog died today. ran to his crib with his last strength and drew his last breath there. He was a 5 year old husky.
I had to let go yesterday, it was for him and only him .. he was beyond precious to me and even though I have two other precious babies , I feel the loss so deeply... I'll never let one of my babies linger in pain and it truly disgusts me that people are so selfish just because they aren't ready to let go... If I were a vet I'd be in jail on the first day because if I thought someone was doing that, I'd go to their house and steal their pet and do what's necessary... So I really would not be a good vet... At all. Love you Dr ❤
I'm so sorry for your loss 🙏
Thank you.
It never gets easy, but I have put down three cats when I could no longer bear to see them suffer.
I cant let my cat go I quit my channel bc of his cancer and him being put down today
Thank you for your love of animals.
Had to do this last Saturday, but it was our Vets decision based on mobility and even now I'm questioning if we did the right thing,
My dog is 17 years old can still eat, drink water but has bad balance can't get up on beds or get off safely anymore blind in both eyes now he pees himself
The vet told us if the dog loses interest in his or her 3 favorite things they like to do for a couple of days then you know the end is probably near for them.
Hmmm maybe they are just depressed.
Might just need a vet visit to diagnose what is wrong with them.
I had a pet rat put down last year. She was quite unwell and appeared to be suffering for quite a while but just on that morning when I took her to the vet the rat looked perkier again. To get her euthanized then was extra painful but overall she was not expected to get better so the vet suggested to go ahead.
What a horrible story!... Don't you know, YOU SHALL NOT KILL'' nor to follow false prophets. ''She was better but not expected to get better''. What a crap! Please, don't get any pets again.
yes!!..comforting them makes it easier for them to let u know when they are ready
Ready to be killed?... They want your effort, not a painful shot from hell. They are unconditional love teachers. They illness /disability is your final test how much of unconditional love you've learned .
Thank you for this ♡

I thought I may have to take this route with my cat, but he's eating and drinking, seems comfortable, so although he isn't well and is in the twilight years, because he's eating, sleeping normally, keeping clean and going to the toilet and coming for fuss, I can see he isn't ready to go yet so I'm not ready either.
My Dog let me know when she had had enough ! 💗
What a difficult topic, very very helpful though and very sad. Well done. Btw you're still brilliant!!!
When they’re at the end stage of the natural dying process are they in pain from you know the fluids building up in their lungs and stuff? I’ve watched pets go both ways and while it’s relief to not have to make the decision it was really tough to watch a loved one choke and jerk around. I am just wondering because during that and a little before my cat didn’t seem to realize that I was there.
On the other hand I was able to hold paws with the cat we had while I was a teenager as they passed her on and it just seemed much more peaceful and painless.
I was still heartbroken but I knew in that case that it was the right decision. I feel guilty about the cat that went natural though. I just can’t help but worry if she was in pain.
My dog is still eating but is showing obvious signs of cognitive decline, and so her quality of life is declining.

@@CentralasianshepherdAlabaiUSA Oh my, I'm tearing up reading this, and you are right; it happens all the time - but I don't know how a veterinarian can ethically ' euthanize' a dog just b/c it is old - although they do (I'll tell you a story!). I'm using quotes b/c 'euthanize' is supposed to mean 'mercy killing' , i.e put a suffering animal out of its misery. But that term is being used to make people feel better about what is just killing. I don't know why more veterinarians don't refuse - they don't have to put a dog down just b/c someone requests it.
We waited as long as possible with our dog because he seemed comfortable and happy. He was also eating as much as ever. Then came the day he passed. It was terrible and as luck would have it, there was no vet available to help us.

What happen my 15 year old dog has heart worms but won’t show any pain vet said put him down but he still eats runs and poops outside??
@@zoraplays1009 I can't imagine how difficult it would be to put a dog down when they aren't clearly suffering. My son and his wife adopted a young dog with heart worm, had him treated and nursed him back to health. It was a long, difficult and very expensive process which I doubt is even an option for a 15 year old dog. I totally understand whatever decision you ultimately make.
I would imagine your vet has already explained the importance of preventing you dog from possibly spreading it to others through mosquito bites. I don't know what sort of methods are available to prevent mosquitos from biting a dog but I assume there are ways to do it. We had a dog with an allergy to them and we just shielded her face and sprayed her with regular insect repellant. I have no idea if that stuff is "safe" for dogs but it worked and never seemed to bother her.
They will tell you. Watch them and look in there eyes.

such a difficult subject. I dont even want to think of this! its always bothered me a bit the thought of doing it... like when a human is pain we dont euthanise them...even when the prognosis isnt good or they are in palliative care...we make sure they are free from pain and let nature take its course and i always go back to this everytime i think about euthanasia...not sure if its just me ?
Would you say "not eating" is not eating at all? 50%, 25% of what they normally do?

Never. There should be hospice care available for dogs so they can die naturally like humans can. There is no reason a dog can't be made comfortable during its transition just like any other family member. Death is part of life and shouldn't be feared.. nor made by a veterinarian. I wouldn't discuss any of this with a veterinarian, they will always want to kill your animal. Quality of life? We don't kill grandma b/c WE decide her life is not "quality". Woof!
Um hospice isn’t natural death. Morphine speeds it along. Do some research. It is just pain relief which I’m not against at all. Morphine slows the breathing til it’s over. My vet does anything he can do to help with pain relief when the end is near. Maybe you need a diff vet?
That’s coming. Canada has already implemented assisted suicide. I’m pretty sure they are not the only country to have done so.
I get where you’re coming from though.
