I would recommend going on a US based line. They are much more aware due to the strictness of the ADA. They still don’t have a lot of accessible cabins and you would still need to directly book a specific HA cabin, but things like the gym, public restrooms etc will be much easier to deal with.

I was gonna say when I went on a cruise last time I needed ADA accessibility. I have a service dog and fainting problems, so I’m not in a wheelchair but I had a full roll in bathroom and everyone was so accommodating. Maybe he should go to princess cruises next time they were great. The only downside was their medical staff was ignorant as hell, and left me alone for three hours, while I was literally dying.(Long story short, I ended up in ICU for three days. It was terrifying…well for my mother at least because I don’t remember any of it. Lol.) Other than that great cruises.😅

@@esmeraldathepinkpoodle2481 they deny claims because they know most people going through stuff like that can’t fight it. Usually taking it a little bit further legally gets them to pay up but some companies wait till the very last second, sometimes offering a settlement hours before the court date and at that point many people think about all the trouble they’ve already been through to get there and decide they came this far, lets go to court and see what a jury thinks I deserve. They tell the company to take their settlement and shove it lol.
But they make more money by denying claims banking on the fact most people won’t fight them. Hell most people in those positions can’t fight them. And they know it. It sucks. As someone that works on the more digital side of accessibility - its been my experience when talking to plenty of businesses that, more often than not, they *really actually don't* give a shit about persons with disabilities. They care about what can keep them from getting sued, and the absolute barest of minimums they can do in order to be compliant with law and *appear* to care.
The only way I've found to trigger *actual empathy* is to actually *show them* how their poor decisions impact people. Your comment in the last video around "would you want to shit and piss in a public toilet for a week" was probably that shot of empathy dude needed to realize that this shit isn't okay. I really hope that MSC makes this right for you.. because this is very much not cool - especially since you did everything right, and they proceeded to ghost you.

Even though it's clearly a vocal minority who even supports that silliness. And apparently, they don't even care about hiring the best person for the job anymore either. It's either going with one person because of their race over others (even if the others are more qualified) because you're pushing diversity at that moment. Or a scenario when you have 2 or 3 comparable potential hires skill wise, and at that point you're then deciding who to hire based on race.... which is classic racism.

From experience in cruise ship construction, the ship owner normally has inspectors that check these crucial things. I have personally seen Carnival with their inspectors measuring everything with a tape measure. If something wasn't right, then the shipyard would have to fix it. So it goes to show that MSC does not have qualified inspectors or even qualified people working in this department. When delivering a Carnival ship or delivering an MSC ship, Carnival is hands down better in their inspections.

Or they somehow manage with canes? Or have to be carried to a taxi? Even with great health care, there must still be people with mobility issues, so how are they coping?
And on a related topic, I've been noticing how "design" is privileging looks over function. In this context in particular we see steps with no handrail, big drops with no guardrail, the list goes on. There needs to be a revolution in schools of design to bring function to the forefront again.

The shower in my public pool/aquatic centre here in Toronto is better than that - and it was built in 1988!
There's also a choice of showers. One in a private room on the pool deck complete with a toilet, shower, shower chair, sink with a mirror (at a reasonable height). It's not perfect as the shower is motion activated (I just bring a posit note to cover it.) It's handheld with the attachment at a logical height for wheelchair users. There's also one in the communal changerooms. The pool also has a pool chair so if I want to stay in a chair for a shower I can - and I don't get my chair wet.
My wheelchair (TiLite ZRA titanium) stays in a huge private change room right by the guards in the therapy pool (big hot tub).

I haven't cruised MSC yet. But I know some of the European lines tend to be a little skimpy on accessibility features. Ships that only cruise out of Europe just have to meet European disability requirements, which are a little more relaxed compared to ADA laws in the US. This is because much of Europe's infrastructure predates accessibility laws and would be nearly impossible to modify fully.
I've found both Carnival and Royal Caribbean to be quite good for accessibility. Especially the newer ships. My only issues on those ships have been with other passengers, usually crowding the elevators so people in wheelchairs or scooters aren't able to fit.

Because the person needing it wasn't wheelchair bound, they figured the stairs were fine. I talked to manager and said, "do you want to take responsibility for an 86 year old woman walking on concrete stairs, and possibly falling? No?" They moved the entire group (3 rooms) to a different and better set of rooms.

@@melissamcclain34 The issue arises when a creator's clips are used almost in full. It can reduce the incentive for viewers to visit the original content, which impacts the creator's engagement and visibility.
For example, Shiplife included most of the original clips but only added commentary to certain parts. A more thoughtful approach would be to focus on those select moments for commentary while providing a direct link to the original video. This way, viewers are encouraged to engage with the original creator's hard work.
Unfortunately, in this case, Shiplife didn't include a direct link-just a few mentions in the video. Many viewers won’t go out of their way to find the original content unless there's an easy-to-click link. And if the full clip is already in the reaction video, there’s little reason to seek out the source.

My guess is the "accessible" public shower is designed for older people with mobility issues who might need to sit down or use a rail to get up but are otherwise self-ambulating. They'd be the most likely people on a cruise and thus the only people the cruise ship cares about. It doesn't seem like they care about people with disabilities as a whole and would probably rather we stayed out of sight lest we remind people that we exist.
The fact they put you down the back right by the staff smoking room (which is insane, why are they smoking indoors?) feels a little bit like 'poke him in an out of the way corner where nobody will see him'.

MSC Seascape was quite possibly one of the worst cruises I've been on for accessibility. The elevators are always full and are hard to fit for wheel chairs when more than 2 other people are in the lift. Making it really hard for disabled folks to get on and off the ship. One of the wheel chair pushers (doubles as show security) was a total jerk we arrived 5 mins early to a show and he refused to let us in (arguing with us until the show actually started). I forget his name but it was some douchebag south asian dude with a topknot for a haircut. Stupid thresholds that get your chair stuck. Weird random pointless inclines.
You can see from the "accessible" shower design that it is built to give you the ILLUSION of accessibility. MSC is not interested in doing things right, they just want to "appear" right.
The food was mediocre at best. Try the curry, bits of bone all over the place. They rough chopped thighs that end up in little fragments easy to get stuck in your gums.
My advice, NEVER BOOK MSC. If you can afford it, go Virgin. If virgin is out of the budget Princess is also a decent one.

That “accessible” shower room was not designed for those with limited mobility or the disabled. It was put together by lazy people who want to claim they are accessible but… it’s not even an attempt! The handrail is only there because it’s a boat and someone probably fell over when it was swaying and now they have handrails for people who stand in the shower. Eurgh. People who build “accessible” rooms and bathrooms need to spend an entire week in a wheelchair.

The cigarette issue would be a deal breaker for me. I get an allergic reaction from cigarette smoke. This is why I cruise with Disney. To then suggest for you use a public restroom because they didn’t assign you appropriate, safe, accessibility is criminal. What would you do if there was an emergency? Cruise ships notoriously don't add enough accessible rooms (because they make less money on a square footage basis) and I honestly think they don't require enough documentation to book them- meaning anyone can book the room just to have a larger space with no proof of actually needing it. I also think your travel agent bares a lot of the blame here. They should have made certain you were receiving an accessible room. That said, to add insult to the entire situation the accessible shower in the gym is laughable. Any fool could have created a better space- I'm embarrassed for this cruise line in this regard. I know from your last video it was suggested that you could use the public facilities (which is bad enough) but then to have those facilities not actually be workable is near criminal. In fact in the United States I think it would be criminal and rightly so. Sorry you're having to deal with this but glad you are bringing some attention to the issue.

If you like I can share a video of my room with you, one. The key card to get in your room is at the height of the wheelchair your wheelchair has a place and if you decided to get rent a motor wheelchair. It's a section in the wrong port where it plugs up. Without a problem, the bathroom you can will right into. It has a seat where you can take a shower even the deck outside your room. You can roll right up into without a problem. It is so beautiful. I noticed that the thing with your videos is pointing out how hard it is for people who are disabled. So I went to the carnival website directly. No talking to an agent.
They have 4 kinds of state rooms.
    Fully accessibly (FAC)
Fully Accessible Cabins - Single Side Approach (FAC-SSA)
    Ambulatory Accessible Cabins (AAC)
    Standard
I am sorry, but all of this going through an agent of yours and you not trying hard enough is what is causing your problems. You shouldnt be going to the places and shaming them when you are not doing your due diligence in finding out whether or not YOU are capable of taking advantage of what they offer. I would image if you talked to someone, not an agent, and explained that you absolutely need a FAC or FAC-SSA then they would be willing to accommodate you and since that was the premise behind your booking in the first place....they are obligated to fulfill their end of the bargain. Especially after they tell you you are booked in a suitable room.
You seem like you want to say "disabled" and they fall all over you trying to accommodate you. You are the one that wants to take part in something that is exclusive and not for everyone, disability or not. Its not for everybody and they didnt design the ship to accommodate a surplus of people with wheelchairs.
According to the data...."According to available data, a typical estimate is that around 1-2% of cruise ship passengers require a wheelchair; however, this number can vary depending on the cruise line, itinerary, and passenger demographics, with some reports suggesting a slightly higher percentage for specific groups"
You are going off of this 20% of the world has disabilities.....but its not so cut and dry. Because on average 1%-2% of cruise goers are in a wheelchair, but you shame the cruise line for not having 20% of its space JUST FOR YOU? Its not that common for people in wheelchairs to cruise. But you wanted to. It is your responsibility to make sure that you got what you need at the end, no one elses. Its not the employees fault or the agents fault, its yours.
Its all in plain English, and that means that even folks from down under can read it all. Everyone has a lot to do to prepare for a cruise, not just you. You have steps some people dont have to take, but you dont know what everyone else is going through either and what they have to do. Some probably have more of an ordeal than you when traveling, believe it or not. Those people take the extra time and energy to ensure that what they want to do goes smoothly.

    • @absentmindedjwc
      @absentmindedjwc 2 місяці тому +5

#2 - that is exactly how it works, actually. EU Regulation 1177/2010 requires a carrier to provide passengers needing special accommodations due to a disability accessible cabins in cost parity to any other typical room within that class - and EU courts, given how they generally rule cases under similar accessibility-friendly regulations - would absolutely require a free upgrade to the next available accessible room.
The cruise line fucked up. He should have gotten the room, and a passenger that simply paid more for that guaranteed room with slightly more space should have gotten bumped (either upgraded or refunded). Someone shouldn't need to pay more to simply enjoy the bare fucking minimum that everyone else gets to enjoy - and fortunately, the law agrees. (Note: there are similar laws here in the US, specifically Title III of the ADA and Title 49 of the CFR.. and very likely Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act)
