    In 79 I was hanging around with a guy who collected the money from the pinball machines in every bar from North Chicago to Kenosha. I went with him a few times to collect. We’d start on Sunday morning and by Sunday night the trunk of that Cadillac was so full of coins the car was squatting. It was only years later after I moved away I realized he probably worked for the mob.

    Lefty Rosenthal was a fascinating figure to me. It was always odd that he never had to testify or was ever indicted on his role in the Argent casinos in the Operation Strawman trial. It was revealed a few years after his death that Frank had been an FBI informant since 1976. I’d always love to know the dynamic of Frank Lefty’s relationship with the mob. He could never be made, he was Jewish and I imagine he was resentful of the Chicago mob . They got a lot more out of Frank than he got from them. I have this theory that had Frank been able to get his casino license then that would’ve made him a far more valuable commodity on the strip. Someone legitimate would have paid Lefty more to run their casinos. Without a license, the mob could lowball him. His ties to the mob were the reason he couldn’t get a license in the first place and then they threw him to the wolves when they felt a little heat. There were resentments on both sides. Lefty was Chicagos guy but Milwaukee and KC had a piece of Argent too and they hated and distrusted Lefty. In fact, the car bombing usually attributed to Tony Spilotro was actually done by the Milwaukee crime boss. I doubt 1000 percent Tony ever tried to kill Lefty because Lefty was smart enough not to make a beef about Tony messing around with Lefty’s wife. And then the car bombing was several years after the affair. It was a message sent for Tony to leave Vegas which he did. I imagine that Lefty was a very good informant for the FBI and probably gave them a pretty good roadmap for what happened behind the scenes at Argent

      Lefty had way too big an ego. He believed he had the kind of power Meyer Lansky had but he wasn’t even close. If he would have shut up and kept his head down the whole time he was in Vegas he would have been fine. Instead he decided he was a celebrity or something. Then he refused to accept any blame for any of his problems and constantly tried to blame the people who put him where he was. He was a good bookmaker. That’s all. He wasn’t a genius and he never should have been trusted with four casinos.

      Yeah definitely, good points! Frank Balistrieri's nickname was The Mad Bomber too, so he's def most likely culprit... Also, a key moment is when FiFi Buccieri dies of cancer in 1973, 3 years before he turns. FiFi is nevefr mentioned but he's one of guys who makes up composite character Remo gaggi (everyone points to Joey Aiuppa) but FiFi was the guy he kept happy w/ the betting $. FiFi was also the muscle for Giancana who was whacked only after FiFi died...
      Also, ironically I was at Marquette university when lotta this was going on in late 80's (trial etc)& had by far best connects to Balistrieri & worked in few of his (his soldiers) joints as a waiter & driver but could never get any of em to talk for the film...

    • @jonnytlong
      @jonnytlong 6 місяців тому +1

      @@jfa42 yeah. Without Buccieri Lefty would have never been given a chance to run a casino. He was a very good bookmaker and he did make money but he made a whole lot more once they put him in charge of Argent. As I said before, if he had just kept his head down he would have been fine. I’m not even sure why he would have even attempted to get a license. It’s not as though he needed one, really.

    Haven’t gotten through the whole thing yet but so far no mention of my guy Frankie Cullotta. What’s going on here?? You even had the scene where Frank played a hitman in the film he was the first guy to shoot Andy Stone as he walks to his car. The guy in glasses is Frank. They show him in the video with the hole in the wall gang in jail but still no mentioning of him. On a lighter note the “ratatatat” guy is hilarious lol.

    • @jfa42
      @jfa42 2 роки тому +4

      Well, it's complicated:) lol We didn't have a direct connection to Frank C but the people we did (like Frank Buccieri who was an underboss & put Lefty into the Stardust) as well as Mike Guardino's brother Leo (who did 15 years & was part of the Hole in the wall gang, Tony's crew) did not like Cullotta at all. They thought he was a rat & a turncoat as Buccieri called him.
      Plus our angle was more the Chicago end of it & Frank C was mainly in Vegas but I was looking to do a follow up that we'd shoot in Las Vegas & would def have talked to him, but we never got the funding.

      @@jfa42 ah alright. I don’t mean to be an ass I was just wondering. Goes to show how complicated these things can be and us on the outside don’t know about. I thought it was Sam Destefano not Cerone who harassed that girl. Plus Remo I thought was Joey Doves? Again not trying to be an ass I just want to know which is the correct version. Whichever one it may be.

    • @jfa42
      @jfa42 2 роки тому +2

      @@pab1381 in the book Casino Frank Cullotta talks about being at a bar in Chicago where Jackie Cerone was making an ass of himself & they stood around like ‘goofs’. Frank C was def not a big fan of Cerone.
      By most accounts if u read Pileggi’s book as best as I can tell Remo is a composite of 3 bosses mainly: the first would be FiFi Buccieri who was Giancana’s muscle. All those early scene where ‘Ace’ is giving Remo bets & keeping him happy w money would’ve been FiFi not Auippa. But for most of Rosenthal’s tenure at Stardust Auippa was the boss of the outfit, so he’d be 2nd guy. The 3rd guy I think is Frank Balistrieri of Milwaukee who looks most like Remo & it was actually Allan Glick (Kevin Pollock in film) who approached Balistrieri for loan thru his lawyer sons who knew Glick, not Chicago guys. Also some think it was Balistrieri not Spilotro who planted bomb cause he thought Rosenthal was a rat working for the Gee (he was an informant it turns out.)

    Spilotro apparently beat the shit out of Stu Unger. According to his son the reason Anthony beat up Stu was because Stu had brought a gun to Anthony’s house and that was a no go for ‘the ant’. Most thought it because of unpaid debt but that’s not the reason he was assaulted.

    Actually no. The movie does not accurately portray the actual events that took place. All you have to do is watch any of Frank Cullotta’s interviews on the subject. He was Spilatoro’s #2 & street boss, boss of the hole in the wall gang and the main consultant on the movie. He has several cameos in the movie also. He will explain all of the liberties taken.
