Casino is a great film, and I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more, but I think it would be better regarded had GoodFellas not existed. (That being said, GoodFellas IS better - I think the voiceover narration hurts Casino a bit.) Still miles better than Godfather III though.
It’s kind of like the way that people think of the mob itself. Goodfellas is about New York and for some reason Chicago is always treated like New York’s little brother or something
My favorite thing about Scorsese is his music licensing choices. As a songwriter in the industry, I know how lucrative licensing your music to a movie can be. Especially with the music Martin loves to use i.e. The Rolling Stones. Im sure his music budgets are always up there in each film. Stones' catalog cant be cheap to use.
With De Niro it could only be a film. If it's a mafia film and Scorsese is directing it, I already know it's a masterpiece, Casino, Goodfellas, The Departed and The Irishman prove that. Without a doubt, one of Martin Scorcese's best films! Bringing together all the characteristic elements of the director's cinematography and featuring a great performance from the cast, "Casino" is a film that, despite its long duration, never appears to be tedious or slow, but maintains the viewer's constant attention at a steady pace. frantic and an interesting way of telling the story. Firstly, I would like to mention the cast's performance, which, as previously mentioned, is great in this film. The performances of De Niro, Pesci and Sharon Stone are "fitted", competently, with the respective characteristics of their characters and the differences and similarities presented between them throughout the story. Secondly, it is also essential to highlight the script, which, as usual, follows Scorcese's style of telling stories of this type. The narration of the characters throughout the course of events and the perspective of each one regarding the facts narrated, the intense and frenetic pace with which the film is presented, the drugs and excessive drinking, the fickle and interesting characters and, above all, , the "brutality" of the love and hate relationships between those involved in the story and the tragic way in which their respective destinies are decided, from which, despite all the money and luxury with which they lived their lives, they all end up ruined, dead or simply back to “square one”. Furthermore, the film also provides an interesting perspective on the relationships, during the 70s and 80s, between the mafia and the Las Vegas casinos, detailing the entire structure of organized crime in a competent way and very similar to the way the film itself director had previously done in "Goodfellas" (although, in this case, there was no mention of casinos, but only the Italian mafia itself). The cast is phenomenal, Sharon Stone puts on a show and Pesci doesn't fall behind, totally devoted to the character. Scorcese's spectacular direction is undeniably sensational. However, I felt exhausted during the film due to the excessive narration along with the dynamism of the editing and the information presented to us. Consequently, I believe I didn't understand some fragments of the story. While watching, I drew parallels to "Raging Bull" the whole time and probably would to "Goodfelas" as well if I had ever watched it. It reminded me of films like "Revolver", "Breaking the Bank" and even a little of "The Godfather". Thus, "Casino" is another excellent film by Scorcese about the mafia and bringing together all the great qualities and characteristics that mark the director's career. Recommended! SPOILER The scene with the hammer on the hand and the death of the brothers at the end are incredible.
I was barely 10 years old when casino came out (discovered it in very early 20's). I'm puzzled how it could get negative reviews for 'lack of plot' in scorcese's words, but pulp fiction was released a year earlier and was praised for style over plot. Can anyone a little older than me help explain why this happened?
@@kennywilkinson913 I interpret your comment as saying goodfellas set a standard that disappointed everyone once they saw casino? The video commented that audiences couldn't figure out if it was a sequel, but i really have to question the intelligence of anyone that struggled with that considering both films start with an explanation of the main characters and setting.
I think partly it was because people had expectations of what a " Scorsese film " was ,whereas with QT they had way less preconceptions, I also think there was likely some form of quid pro quo with QT for critics /reviewers, I think Weinstein somehow greased the skids
@@uhoh7541 Yea, sorry for being so vague, it was nearly 1am last night and I made the comment before he mentioned it in the video, same 2 actors causing confusing and so on but if you wasn't a fan of the genre it would be hard to see the differences as a casual, the visual style and narration were very similar, I probably prefer casino as it was less embellished than goodfellas, the real ace looked a lot more like de Niro than Henry Hill ever looked like Ray liotta 😅

It's been so many years since I've seen Casino... I have got to go watch it again after seeing this! I loved that movie... I didn't get the recognition it deserved... truely a masterpiece IMO...
I watched this movie several times and it is definitely one of my favorites. Came across it again today and pondered a little whether or not I should rewatch as I've been having some issues with sitting through some 3 hour movies lately. Went for it anyways and time just flew by. For not having a plot, this movie can really suck you in.
It is sad to note that the Academy's exacerbated and outdated conservatism prevented this spectacular film from receiving the Oscar nominations it deserved at the time and that only Sharon received a well-deserved Oscar nomination for best actress! Casino has the best of Scorsese and the master paints the film as if it were a biblical tragedy where he punctuates each scene with a great music classic and at the opening of the film he plays the Passion of the Christ according to Saint Matthew, by Bach, brilliant! One of Scorsese's great classics. And in my opinion, the last genuinely Scorsesian film, through the lives of these three characters, tells a piece of the history of their country in a kind of mafia western, this film should have won the Oscar for best film, direction, actress, adapted screenplay, editing and photography, a true masterpiece!!!
Man when I seen this it was on a 2 tape VHS set.. Such a great movie.. some of tha best character driven story's I've ever seen on film.. Love this freakin Movie!!!!!
I feel so annoyed to those who thought Casino is a sequel to Goodfellas .. I mean .. They didn't know that Robert De Niro's character in Goodfellas went to prison when he become old? They didn't know that Joe Pesci's character was shot in the head? So they all thought they got second chance in life and Pesci's character miraculously survive the head shot? I mean c'mon
So they expect us to believe that Joe Pesci wasn't allowed in certain casino's as they thought he was the real Tony Spilotro even though Tony had been dead for years 😅
Do you know how many ghosts walk the streets of Las Vegas? Even today, nearly 30 years after Casino was released, the stories that inspired it still get told. Vegas constantly reinvents itself every 10-15 years but it clings to its past, celebrates it. That’s why you’ll find restaurants named for former gangsters, or signs that Frank Sinatra or some other celebrity ate regularly at others. People would mistake Joe Pesci for a decade dead mobster because of course they would.
OP this video is excellent. And a lot more interesting than most of stuff on television calling itself a documentary. Please deep dive some war movies like "Apocalypse" and Hamburger Hill?
Agreed. After watching Casino several times recently, it feels like Marty concentrated on particular scenes and how well and beautiful they are shot as opposed to an overall coherent plot.
My only critique of Casino is that they seemed to be having too much fun on set. If you watch it enough times you'll notice that in many of the scenes the actors are about to start laughing (e.g. when DeNiro shows up at the diner and interrupts Sharon Stone's meal with Lester so-and-so, his demeanor takes away from how ominous the dialogue is framing the scene to be). You have to pick at it a bit, but it's very noticeable.
Im born and raised in vegas. My parents worked on strip for 40 years. My dad had some great stories bartending at Caesars Palace in mob heyday. My godfather was pit boss at Stardust but i was too young to really know anything to ask him about Lefty. Common sentiment is city was better place to live back then even if front page of RJ always had headlines regarding mobbed up Vegas.
@@AK-74K great movie. Captured the aura of that era in 70s and early 80s. When they were filming at locations around city i used to read newspaper to see where they were filming. In mid 90s city still had some of the spots around town where the stuff actually happened. Until recently the Tony Romas and Marie Calenders restaurants on Sahara where Leftys car blew up were still there. Happened in between parking lots of the restaurants.
I didn't know Scorsese wrote clockers. I thought that was all Spy clean. Spike Lee did an excellent job on clockers but I have to say I would like to have seen what Scorsese would have done
I liked it better when it was called Goodfellas. It feels very derivative. I've seen it and nothing will change my mind. Marty? come on. This is paint by numbers. Goodfellas is a masterpiece.

I love that there isn't a big driving plot. The world the movie creates feels so real, and we as the audience are allowed to observe for a few hours.
