Your gothic necklace is absolutely adorable! Oh my goodness, I completely felt you when you talked about how amazing it is to grab a fresh, hot baguette at any time of the day. Jumping a fence for a Beckett play? That’s the ultimate compliment a writer could ever receive. Also, ma’am, YOU are so precious! Your deep reverence for literature is incredibly touching. 😍
Maria, congratulations on your studies. More importantly, thank you for your blogs. I shall never visit Paris, but I feel that I have. I have traveled with you on your journey and lived vicariously through your words. Generations and many miles separate us, but you have made this world a little smaller. Thank you once again! I look forward to your next chapter.
Omg the candle hahaha loved that. Also im so happy you shared the Alcest concert. I wish i could see them live someday. And thank you for the images of Proust's grave. Thank you for sharing Paris.
Finishing a book can feel like saying a goodbye to it, the book, the memories and thoughts it intrigues within us and the particular light that work shines on the days and weeks we are spending engaging with it. So, it is natural to put off closing the covers for that last time. I understand it in this way for and with myself at least. X😊
Paris is forever beautiful. The story of fence climbing is awesome. When you took a page out of Proust, my heart skipped a beat. You have a wonderful relationship with your favorite authors.
Thank you so much Maria for the scenes at Marcel Proust's grave. I got a little emotional just watching. It was just a few weeks ago when I finished Remembrance of Things Past, the single greatest reading experience I've ever had. Your comments about Proust were what motivated me to read him.
Thank you Maria. Wow. The semester flew by. Congratulations for passing your exams. I have to share this, and I’m okay admitting this, that I didn’t know about Proust before your channel, so thank you for introducing me to him. I heard (somewhere) since learning about Proust that there was some debate around the Madeleine biscuit, as to who first ‘invented’ this. I must say I don’t know too much about this debate, but will look into it. I did buy two or so weeks ago a Madeleine baking tray. I’m yet to make them as I’ve had no motivation, like many people, I’m feeling a bit weary this time of the year. Maybe I can make these in my holidays. It was a nice gesture you did, leaving the first page from your first Proust book : ) and a Madeleine biscuit on his grave. Talking about Proust, in 2022, a Fiction book titled, Clara Reads Proust, by Stephane Carlier, was released. It was written only in French (as the author is French). This year (2024) they released an English translation of the book. I ordered it online last week, as I only found out about it last week. I thought it might be a fun read over the holidays : ) I’m not sure if you’ve heard of (or read) this book, but thought I’d share about it. Hope you have restful (and enjoyable) mid-Semester break. Wishing you a happy Christmas 🎄🎅🏻✨and a successful and joy-filled New Year (2025)🙂🎉
My goodness. That vlog! It slayed me. In a good way. I’m on a bus now and trying to keep it together in the apartment talking about how Proust influenced you brought tears but You at Proust’s grave…eating the madeleine…and saying he’s never alone for more than a minute, that’s when I had to make sure i didn’t sob! 😂 very emotional because Proust has changed the way I see the world as well. it was all so good. And saying you didn’t need the first page because you know it by heart! My heart went right to my throat. That music group sounds like your Madeline. You share all this in a very cinematic way as well, your sharing of all this, I haven’t deconstructed the content and visuals, I just know the impact is like a great story. It builds and then wallops you and then you close it and you are changed. For the better. You walk and talk with it as you go back about your life. Bravo to you! Good luck with your last exams.
Lovely video, Maria. Thanks for finding the time to make it. It is much appreciated. Your account of getting to 'Godot' sounds like something from Beckett. You will remember the opening lines of the play: - Nothing to be done! - I'm beginning to come round to that way of thinking myself. But then I say "Vladimir, you haven't tried everything!"" And so I go on. As do we all.
This most certainly made interesting viewing. Your love for Proust is so infectious, not to mention how charming your smiles are. Wishing you success in your exams, and merry Christmas!
Hey! I was in Paris last month for my birthday and my friend and I went to Shakespeare and Company and found Hemingway's house!! We also went to his favorite restaurant- La Closerie de las Lilas and sat in his favorite chair. haha. It was an amazing birthday!
Thank you for this video, Maria! So incredibly lovely to follow you through these emotional and special moments. The story about you climbing the fence made me cackle; very Kafkaesque :')
You could post to yourself items that you can't fit in your bag. I've done that with books when I visit Europe. As a visitor it gets one into the life of the place when it is a mission to find a suitable box, get tape etc, and deal with a post office. Places a tourist doesn't have to deal with.
Glad you're enjoying your stay in Paris. I have many fond memories of living in Paris as a film student. I lived all over the city -- first at the bookstore "Shakespeare & Company", then many small apartments in the 5th, 6th, 14th, 20th (also near Pere Lachaise) and best of all, on a peniche (houseboat near the Eiffel Tower). I've noticed your videos always are lit so well, creating a cinematic mise en scene. I believe I know Paris as well as any city, mainly because it's such a great walking city and I made so many music videos and short films all over Paris. Have a super time these last 2 weeks, and of course, you will always come back. Bon Voyage 🍷🍷👏👏 PS -- I directed "Waiting for Godot" and "Fin de Partie" in Paris --- great memories of long ago.
I must watch this again right away as I tuck into my Butter Chicken curry. The kaleidoscopic colours of the Theatre and gallery compliment wonderfully your enticing anecdote and adventure to reach Godot, but at least you didn't have to 'wait for Godot', hehehe!! X
Obviously, as you've said, there's a whole different cuisine there in France compared to your typical choices at home, but is there something in particular that is so staple for you that you have realised you must have to eat wherever you are in the World? Or, maybe a particular drink? X
This vlog made me a bit teary, I love how you honor the things you love - this is what life is about!

What a wonderful comment. This really made me smile when I read it this morning. Sending a hug around the world! All the best to you :-)

The universe was testing your resolve.🤣 I am glad it worked out at the end!

Did you ask the music venue if someone found the necklace? They may keep lost property for a while.

Not a gallery, but Hugo's vivaciously vibrant home!
Your experience with the park and the fences sounds like something from a Beckett play.

I'm betting that the World will find a beautiful and unique way to bring the necklace home to you...xx
Sweet

you also should listen to peste noire, best french band
🥰
Marcel Proust? I'm better than he was. Unfortunately, I wasn't in the "in crowd".
Have you finished Proust now? If not you should make some updates as you go along. I think that would make for good videos in between the longer ones.
