In this week’s episode, I travel out west for some landscape photography in Yosemite National Park. This was my first trip ever to Yosemite and I now understand what all the fuss is about - absolutely incredible national park for landscape photography! If you’ve never visited Yosemite I would highly recommend that you do so, it will certainly be time well spent!
In this video, I photograph three separate locations within Yosemite National Park. The three locations I chose for this on location video are the classic tunnel view point, Bridalveil Falls and the Three Brothers Peaks. While photographing these locations I used my Sony 16-35mm GM wide angle lens and my new super telephoto lens, the Sony 100-400mm GM. I used the long lens a great deal during my time at Yosemite in order to capture more intimate detailed shots of this incredible landscape.
The weather was not ideal for landscape photography while I was there as each day was filled with clear blue cloudless skies, which is beautiful weather, but not great for landscape photography. So I had to get creative in order to eliminate as much of the cloudless sky from my photographs as possible. Nevertheless, I came away with some great landscape photos that I'm super happy with and share with you throughout this video.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

What’s your most used focal length for landscape photography?
Mark Denney 24-70 for me
@@irelanddenney7624 Super versatile for sure!
Recently it’s been a 40mm sigma art. Thanks for making these on location videos. They remind me how fun it is to be on vacation with my camera gear.
I use the 24mm GM about 60% of the time, the 100-400 GM 30%, and 5% each for the Irix 15mm and Sony 55mm 1.8
Great vid. My favorites are 24mm prime And 200mm prime. And I do use 85mm prime as well which I really enjoy.
Thanks for bringing back very happy memories. We visited Yosemite in October 2015 for 2 days. We did a trip from the East Coast to the West Coast over a three week period. We are from England I only wish that some day we can come back again and see your wonderful Country. Thanks again, as they say you cannot take the memories away from you.
Thats exactly right Susan! Memories will stick with you forever! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yosemite is the kind of place you need to spend a month in. I could probably spend fall all the way thru spring there! Another great vid!
ted ted Indeed! Me too Ted!
Love the video Mark! Love the behind the image info, thought processes etc. Speaking to a camera in front of other people will become more comfortable the more you do it. I've seen other vloggers who feel the same. So glad you had a great time in Yosemite!
Barbara Livieri Thanks so much Barbara! Happy to hear you enjoyed the video.
Mark, i love this types videos, i love the style of Nigel Danson´s videos, just take us and show us how you created these amazing photos. Definitely do more of this type of videos, it´s just so relaxing and motivating to go and make some photos too. :)
Super happy to hear ya enjoyed it! Really appreciate ya watching!
Absolutely! I just wanted to write the same thing.
I am just loving these type of videos. Where you take us to the location with you and show us the actual process. Keep up great work.
Any direction one points a camera is a photographic wonder! Yosemite was my favorite location for landscapes other than Maui. Thanks for the video and good tips, Mark!
Many thanks - love Maui as well!
I am just taking photography seriously and your videos are so easy to follow! I just spent 2 days in the Back Country of Kananaskis, Alberta (my home) and I found I was generally using 18-24. As I get better, I plan on getting better lenses and a better camera so I have more options! Once again, Thanks for being so awesome! (and that akward life, I'm still trying to get over it!)
Thanks so much Stephanie! Glad you're enjoying the videos and find them helpful! You sure live in a beautiful area - love Alberta!
Visited this area 5 years ago from Scotland. Absolutely loved it. Wasn't doing photography then but would love to go back now that I'm learning. Stunning area
~~Great video, I'm glad I'm not the only one to see stuff in post that you wish you would have done different. I like the way you explain things your doing and why even the difference that time will make on a shot. I'm new, I'm learning and find your videos helpful. You remind me of me, very laid back easy going.
Thanks so much Mark! Great to hear you're enjoying the videos!
Great video Mark! California got a lot of rain this year for once so it is great to see those falls gushing so strongly. Don't feel too bad about no clouds. On my visits there only once was there clouds and it was with constant rain. Hope your family enjoyed the visit. You never forget the first time you see tunnel view!
It was amazing Frank - we really enjoyed it!
I've been there twice. First time was Nov 2018. The fall colors were great, but the water falls were all dry except Bridalveil.
Love the photo of the trees in front of the waterfall, great image! Thumbs up! :-)
Cloudless nights in Yosemite are awesome for Milky Way photography and there are many, many locations for beautiful images. Thanks for sharing your visit to Yosemite!
Glad to do it! Appreciate ya watching it!
Great video Mark. I feel your pain about recording in front of people. Some people don't seem to have any problems with it as they whip out their 'selfie-sticks'. I know a few places I'd like to stick those sticks. Gone is the solitude of the days of Ansel Adams, so we make due with what is offered to us. Great job location hunting and great photos. Thanks for your encouragement and inspiration!!!
Allen P Thanks Allen! It’s an all new world for sure!
Great video, Mark. Don't let others cramp your style. Most people won't even notice you filming yourself. In this social media saturated world, people are used to seeing people talking in to cameras. Please do more location and the thought behind getting the shot videos.
Thanks Jim! Thats a great point you made.
Another great video, Mark. 🙌🏻👍🏻
Thanks buddy!
I'm really liking your channel. The best for landscape photography (or even photography in general) that I've come across. Keep it up!
Many thanks - its much appreciated!
Great video, Mark! If you ever decide to go back to Yosemite for a dedicated photography trip, you should consider doing a workshop. I'm sure you'd find people (like myself) who would be interested in participating.
Much appreciated - thank you! For sure will be back and will certainly consider a workshop! Thank YOU!
Thank you so much for this! this video couldn't have been better timed, heading to Yosemite next week and super stoked about it!
Glad to do it Matt! Enjoy your trip - I know you will!
great to see you out in the field mark
Thanks Joseph!
Great job pleased you got the light, thanks for sharing another great video .
Glad to do it David - thanks for watching it!
Once again I enjoyed being part of the trip. I understand the time and effort you took to ensure a good composition. As always, I wish I was there too! Thanks for sharing.
My pleasure Diane and thanks so much for watching!
Congratulations on your inaugural trip to Yosemite. Now that you've had your taste, I'm sure you'll be looking at your schedule and budgeting time to take another go at it. There's just no way to explore all that's within vicinity in one trip.
100%! I'll be back very very soon!
Great video Mark, great to see you shooting on the field. Look forward to more of those!
Appreciate it Gerald!
You’re coming out of the tunnel (actually both) and your mouth just drops. It’s really a mesmerizing place. Far way from home from Germany but I’ll be back. Been there twice in Autumn. Would love to get there in spring and also winter. Great video as always and love the honesty with the video and the gillions of people around 😅
Amazing stuff sir! This is so high on my places to go and hopefully I can do it in the next couple of years.
Many thanks Travis - a truly spectacular place!
Hey, Mark! In preparation for an upcoming trip to Yosemite, I have been searching youtube for videos to refresh myself on the finer points of photographing vast landscapes, and the tips & tricks for shooting in Yosemite in particular. Shooting landscapes is not something I've had a ton of experience with, so I was pleased as punch to find your videos! Yesterday I secured our reservation for Yosemite for next week, and we are really looking forward to going. We'll have only one day in Yosemite, and one day in Sequoia/King's Canyon. After watching your videos, I feel like I'm more prepared to capture the beauty of the parks with my camera. I use a Nikon D3100. Thank you for your channel, and I look forward to seeing more of your work!
Thanks for talking us thru your thought process>.
Robert Hopper Thank YOU for checking out the video Robert!!
Great video, thanks for sharing how you work!
Thanks John - glad to do it!
You just gained a new subscriber. I love this video and how you brought us through your process for creating an image. I also really liked how your critiqued you photo and what you'd do different. Thanks!
Excellent video. You have a calm, easy going style that works well. Keep up the in the field videos...they are banging!
Much appreciated Phil - thank ya!
I love the on location videos 👍
Appreciate it Mark! Glad to hear it man.
Great on the scene tut!
Gonçalo Lopes Thanks so much -happy to hear you think so👍
Yosemite is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. Beautiful photo.
Thanks so much! Yosemite is such an incredible place!
Glad you got to experience Yosemite. I'm spoiled living in CA, only a five hour drive away. I've been three times in the last year and have two more trips planned between now and September! I love how you explained your compositions and settings. Very helpful! Keep it up.
Much appreciated Andy - thanks man! You're very lucky to live in such an incredible corner of the world - jealous!!
Thanks for great video, Mark. Yosemite is hard to photograph in the Summer, which also happened to be the time of year when I visited, twice! I'd love to go back in the Fall or Winter. Thanks again.
Thanks John! Im hoping to return this fall as well.
Great tutorial. I live in Calif. and been to Yosemite many times. Love it. Have to go in the different seasons. Spring lots of water and great falls. When I was a kid got to see the fire falls.
Appreciate it Ron! Such an amazing place - I'm hoping to return this fall or winter.
Well done Mark. It brought me back to my trip a few years back. I recall the traffic and the difficulty getting an image.
Thanks Brad! I'm planning to return again this fall in hopefully less crowded conditions, but WOW what a place!
I felt your pain. When you ran out of space on your sd card. Two days ago I was on my way to a shoot near my home the snow was falling and was so excited to get out. I left the house forgetting I hadn't put in a card in my camera till I arrived at the park. I kicked my butt all the way home. Thank goodness I still got my shoot in.
I have a Tamaron 10-24 on a Canon SL2. Its what I can afford right now. Doing Banff in August/September, so I'm stoked for that, with Yellowstone and Lake Powell on the way home. Thanks for the vid and the honest assessment.
Really appreciate David - thats sounds like an amazing trip you're embarking on - enjoy!
Great on location video Mark! I could feel your excitement as the light began to highlight the subjects. I would have to say my favorite focal length for landscape is 24mm for getting foreground and background in comps with minimal distortion. However it’s nice to get some detail shots with telephoto. Was gonna say those wild flowers are lupine however someone beat me to it. Hope you and your family had an epic time in the park. Cloudless days are a problem here on west coast during the summer months. Keep on keeping on, getting out there and shooting.
Appreciate it Chuck! Hope you're doing well my man!
Loved this mate. You should do more of these types of vlogs. Well done 👏👏👏
Appreciate it Gavin! I want to do more as well.
@@MarkDenneyPhoto il look forward to it mark 😀 keep it up
I've been one of the landscape photographers that has shot wide but watching your videos I'm now starting to use my 80-300mm to zoom in on the small details in a landscape that usually gets lost when photographing the whole scene. As always fantastic video and I will make the trip from Australia to photograph these stunning places that you have been showing us :)
Much appreciated Shane - thanks man! Love going long in landscape photography!
fun video thank you Mark
B H It was certainly fun to make - can’t wait to return there.
That was amazing! A really enjoyed seen your process in scene. How you arrange the picture and what you are looking for in the field. Great video, Mark! Thanks for sharing!
Glad to do it Eli! Appreciate it man!
Informative video as usual Mark. I appreciate the way you explain your compositions and settings. Drove up to Yosemite today to try my new Tamron 15-30 mm g2. Shot Glacier Point before heading to the valley floor. What a parking nightmare. Missed all the falls but got sone nice shots of climbers on El Capitan. Recommend the shuttle to anyone on the valley floor.
Thanks John! Glacier Point is amazing, but you're right the entire park can be a parking nightmare this time of year!
Just came back from Yosemite 3 days ago. It was my 5th visit there
Such a magical place!
Great video Mark. I would so love to visit Yosemite (it's on my wish list, but a long way from me🙁), such a stunning location. I could fell your tension when changing those memory cards over 😮😮. Will look forward to the next adventure 👌👌
Thanks Chris! Memory cards always seem to fill up during the worst possible time:)
You made good time out of your family trip! My favorite lens to use is the 16-35 GM 🙌🏽
Moises Lopez Photography Yes - Thank you! My favorite lens as well - incredible!
I'm glad you pushed through the awkwardness and did the on location video anyway!
Appreciate it William! I'm glad I did as well
I'm glad you didn't run into any bears in the pre-dawn hours. I noticed you were using the Shimoda pack. I just saw your review of the Atlas Athlete pack. I'm wondering why you did not have the Athlete pack with you? I think the final photo of the 3 Brothers Peaks is a keeper!
Chew Wang Thanks Chew! When I need to carry a lot of gear I always use my Shimoda for that.
Yosemite is a zoo in Summer with a lot of competition for space at the iconic locations.Nice video! Rock on!
For sure, busy but worth it - love that place!
Yes, it is a busy place. You have to book the campground months in advance.
Mark, As you found, Yosemite is overwhelmingly stunning as well as overwhelmed with people in the summer. You will find fewer people in the fall and spring. I suggest you take a look at visiting the Yosemite high country via Tioga Road, it just takes my breath away every time.
I hear about Tioga Road, but that area was closed when I was there. I plan on returning this fall though.
Great vid Mark 👍🏻 Nice pace & style. I'm an Aussie with a Yosemite addiction... 💛
Appreciate it Dallas - I share your addiction!
Great video Mark, it’s nice to know that I am not the only one that has some issues on a shoot. I have not been to this area but it’s on my list...
Thanks
Thanks Bill! I usually have more issues than successes, but that's just part of the game!
Really enjoy watching your on locations videos! They always seen more relatable to me because I don’t get to go photograph other county’s like Iceland so I would much rather see videos like this in the Us and I do have one question how did learn so much about plants and trees? I feel like as a landscape photographer I should get more familiar with the name of trees and plants in my area but not sure where to start.
Austin Wiley Thanks Austin! I’m always a little hesitant when posting an on location video so this feedback is greatly appreciated! I feel like I know very little about plants and trees but it’s something I’m certainly working on.
Thank you Mark for sharing your camera & picture-taking knowledge during your vacation with the general public. Truly enjoyed it. Just got back from Yosemite w/my twin brother, but the control fires & terrible smoke in the valley and lots of detour traffic and delays caused additional heartache in my attempt to take pictures from the valley. We did tackle the 4-mile hike, which took us above the smoke line thus had a better chance of better views except this hike took more than 10 hours (5 hours up from the valley to Glacier Point and then 5 hours back down...we were dead tired, but was worth it).

🤓🏞🎶🌎🏓☀️👍
Mark, the first scene when you’re shooting the sunrise. What did your settings look like? I can’t imagine having aperture at 11 or 16 and still being able to capture enough light with high ISO values.
Thanks for the video! I'll be heading to Yosemite in a few weeks with the family. I wish you would have shown more images from the tunnel viewing area?
Thanks ya Ron! Enjoy your trip there! I have a few more images from that area that'll I'll be sharing on Instagram in the coming weeks for sure - such an amazing scene that tunnel view is!
Bet this will be a great video thanks for inspiring more people like me to create UA-cam channels :)
Thank YOU!
SSSSHHHHHH.... recommendations = more visitors. Yosemite is crowded, the number of tripods is growing exponentially. Mid-June/July are not the best months with blue or grey sky, . For Yosemite I am typically hiking with a 24-70. The park is in my backyard, it never gets old.
Very lucky you are Chuck! It's such an incredible corner of the world!
Thanks
Awesome! Glad to see you enjoyed your trip! Would love to make it out there someday. Hope making the video didn't interfere with family time too much!
Erick Lindberg You’d love it there Erick! A pure photographic paradise!
@@MarkDenneyPhoto I bet! Going to go on a backpacking trip this weekend or early next week. Hopefully I can get a few ones. It's in Ohio, so not as great as Yosemite. But I'm excited
Hey, Yo, Mark, How's it going? I can't believe what I'm seeing. The world is very big and There are beautiful places in the world and This is one of them. Yeah, There are big mountains, There are big waterfalls, There are big meadows, There are so many forests, There are beautiful trees and The trees have leaves. This is a beautiful place in the world because You can appreciate the beauty of nature. Thank you so much for this video, I really appreciate it. By the way, I speak Spanish and I'm learning English. ⛰️🏞️🙂👍🌎
Duuude I'm jealous. Always wanted to hit up Yosemite. Gotta love those pre-5:00 AM summer sunrise mornings too LOL!
It's amazing - you'd love it out there! Yes, love setting my alarm for 4:00 am!!
Great video, always fun to see more than just the finished shot. Hope you had a nice vacation, me personally I'm soon ready for my 6 week vacation (summer vacation really, because Swedes all take their vacation in the summer). And I'm looking to go out and get more involved with my photography, specifically the landscape part. Still have not decided on whether to get the Samyang 14mm or Samyang 20mm. Time will tell. :)
Glad ya enjoyed it - enjoy your summer vacation!
You bumped into what tends to happen in the summer in the mountains out here in the west, which is - perfectly clear mornings, and you always seem to be in a valley where the sun clears the nearest ridge a couple of hours after sunrise. Nice for hiking, not so good for photography.
Yep, that seems to be the common theme out west!
I do everything in my power to avoid Yosemite in the Summer (late May - early September). Tioga Road is often still closed in early/mid June due to snow accumulation in the high country and that traps the many thousands of visitors in the Valley (beautiful as the Valley is), making it way too busy and crowded to truly enjoy. I was surprised to see how many vacant spaces were available at the Bridalveil Fall parking area. Even if an image doesn't turn out the way you would like, it is still quite a beautiful experience watching the sunrise and the way it lights the surrounding granite walls and peaks. Better to be there and not succeed than to not have been there... Hope you and the family had an enjoyable time.
Thanks Frank! We had a great time there - cant wait to return!
I am a new subscriber to your channel. Really like your no drama videos, technical explanations and very relatable videos. I came upon your channel when I was looking for videos on how many photographers use AEB/HDR vs ND split/graduated when photographing very harsh lighting conditions. I have been using AEB exclusively since 2017 and I like the none HDR look from the new apps available now. I was not a fan of the overly processed look of the early days of HDR. Your bracketing video was very spot on and glad you have positive say regarding AEB. Anyway I am from California and if you ever go back to Yosemite, try to make it to the Eastern Sierras in the fall. The HWY 395 area between Bishop and Lee Vining has some amazing displays of aspen colors and offers a more colorful vistas than Yosemite in October with less crowds. Good luck and keep up the good work.
I find myself using a lot the 70-300 since I moved to New Mexico.
Thanks for the wonderful video Mark! I always learn so much watching all of your content whether it is a tips video or an on location video. One question, when in a wildlife setting like Yosemite what precautions do you take to avoid interactions with wildlife? That is one of the things I am always concerned about when I am on a remote shoot by myself.
Thanks so much Christal! That's something that's always on my mind, the only real precaution I take is to not carry open food and bring a trusty can of bear spray.
Also, if at all possible, go with a friend (cuz it’s great having someone watching your back, having company), and in case you trip and hurt yourself, someone to aid you, plus better 2 vs. 1 bear, just in case you run into one.
- twin dragon 🤓🏞🎶🌎☀️👍
Great video, Mark. And about the missing Audio - That can happen to all of us, don't worry. My lens lineup is currently a 18-135 and a 70-300 on APS-C. Though those zoom lenses might not be the sharpest, I prefer them over carrying a bunch of primes. I might get a 10mm 2.8 prime though - but it has no thread for filters, unlike a 10-20 zoom lens...
Thanks man - yeah it's bound to happen eventually :)
Hi Mark, Thanks for the video. Just curious if you took any photos of the mountains in portfolio if you would share. Also, what lens 100-400 were you using? I am considering purchasing a lighter but quality version of the same zoom. range. I currently have the Tamron 70-200 which is fantastic but for me it is a beast to take around, hand hold if needed and no fun to travel with or lug on a hike. Its heavy.
Hi, Eileen! I haven't had a chance to review many images from the trip yet, but I believe I did. I was using the Sony 100-400 GM most of the trip - which is amazing!
Amazing content as always! Yosemite is a beauty! Do you use premiere to edit the videos?
Thanks Chinmay! I sure do.
Nice video, with this conditions you had i would consider doing some astrophotos as well.
Thanks Brano - yep would have been good conditions for that!
Really enjoyed that Mark, I must just say I prefer to see you out and about rather than too many office based entries.
Appreciate it Jon - glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for sharing your experience. Landscape photography has been my hobby for 50 years! I will be visiting Yosemite this summer as a part of a family vacation. I have a new Nikon Z7II, but only the kit 24-70 lens. I have a 70-200 mm, but it doesn't play nice with the mirrorless camera, even with the z-mount converter. A Z-mount 100-400 is not in my budget at this time. Will I be able to get decent shots with the 24-70? I really don't want to take my D-850, which works with the 70-200, because the combo is so darn heavy for this now senior citizen!
I've been using a 10-18mm zoom on an SL1, so that's roughly equivalent to 16-29 on a full frame. I recently picked up a used 5d mkII and am looking forward to trying out the 17mm prime I bought to go with it.
FYI, those lavender flowers are called lupine.
I figured that's what they were as I saw them all around the Golden Gate Bridge not too long ago, but wasn't sure - all I knew was that the color of them was lavender:)
I really like your "on location" videos, feeling like I am in the Yosemite Valley and listening to your thought process while you compose and shoot images. FYI: the flowers are Lupine, very common in mountains on the west coast.
Thanks so much Louise!
For me it is always 18mm 😅 on a crop sensor, so that means something like 27 mm and a lot of times I feel that this don't cover my feeling and at the end I take a panorama 😂
And yeah, amazing video like always
Haha - yeah I know what you mean! Appreciate ya watching as always!
Great post, Mark. On site considerations were most welcome and instructive. Logistics question - e.g., at parking lot, does the park have open/close or other time restrictions (e.g., arrival, departure, how long you can stay at a venue)? With this trip behind you, do you feel the tug of an upgrade to A7R3 with its 2 card slots😁?
Paul M Thank ya Paul! I didn’t notice and park open close times that prohibited anyone from entering or exiting. I’m always enticed by the riii :)
Mark the video is great. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on why and why not to frame the shots the way you did. Do you have links to any other videos going over the bracketing you described? I have a 14mm on the way to try to take better landscape photos.
Much appreciated Andy! Glad you enjoyed the video. I don't have any videos regarding bracketing, but you just gave me a great idea for a future video, so thank you for that!
Great! Your videos inspired me to step up from my A7 to an A7RII to accompany my new lens. Thanks for the great content!
Mark, wonderful video. I'm hoping to get to Yosemite from here in Australia sometime next year, either April/May or September/October. Can I ask....what time of year were you there? Thanks.
John Lovern Thanks John! I was there this past June.
He Bruh give Glacier Point a try next time your in Yosemite. It's an sundown shoot but go early because it gets packed. I'm headed back once the first snow hits. 🐼✌️
I went there one evening for sunset, incredible location!
I have a Canon aps-c. I typically shoot landscape at f11. My images are usually soft. Someone suggested that on aps-c you should multiply the f number by the crop factor. 11×1.6 is the equivalent to roughly f18 on a full frame, and that's y my images are soft. Is this true?
Great video Mark! I'll have to put that one on my bucket list. I totally get the odd feeling you had trying to vlog with all the people around. That would have been too distracting and awkward for me.
Thanks Paul! Yes, it was brutal!
What app did you use to see the trajectory of the sun rise
what is the name of the app you use for your composition?
I feel sad I never got the chance to visit Yosemite when I lived in the states~
Such an incredible place! I cant believe it's taken me this long to get there.
Hey Mark, where do you stay overnight when you go to yosemite?
Where do you stay when you visit Yosemite?
I'm curious where people stay when they are touring, hiking, and taking pictures.
I stayed at the Yosemite View Lodge is just outside the park about 2 miles from the front gate.
Mark, I've always wondered why it appears that you have 2 pics that appear similar. I'm referencing 13:16 in the clip, behind your right shoulder (and to the viewer's left).
How do you balance spending time with family versus taking photos? This has been a struggle with me. We go somewhere nice and I want to spend an hour just wandering around looking for nice places to photograph, but after a short while my family gets bored.
Blue sky days can be a common challenge for photographers. I’m curious how you compose great images when the sky is not so cooperative?
I find using a long lens and focusing on the more intimate details are great way around this.
What app is that?
It is California with 9-12 month bold skys. :-)))
what tripod are you using?
Orange I use a Really Right Stuff TVC34L with a BH40 Ball Head
Is it safe to be wandering around in the dark like that? Would think the local wildlife might greet you!
Great Video. Would love you to show the images a bit longer, rather than a quick snapshot.
Thanks man! I posted one of them on my IG yesterday if you want to take a look there
