Unveiling the best budget macro gear: Extension tubes or Macro reversing ring?

- I produced a video some time ago where I looked briefly at using a macro revering ring as well as macro extension tubes to create macro photography images. In this video I spend a couple of days using these methods to try and answer the question. Do you need a dedicated macro lens for macro photography or do these methods match up at a fraction of the price? Watch to find out.

Holy cow! Those macro shots were superb Scott. Great video and thanks for sharing the look at the gear.👍🙏
Cheers Adrian, I was impressed with how well they performed. Certainly a cost effective way of shooting macro when you get a setup your comfortable with👍Have a great week mate🙏👍
Great video Scott, it's been a while trying to catchup with all the UK Vlogger vids but I'm getting there! Those shots were lovely mate! Well done 👍
Cheers Richard. I suspect you are slightly busy out there! It was nice to get back to some simple photography after my pine marten experience!! All the best mate👍
Not watched for a while but really enjoyed that. Macro is something I want to have a go at, ideal for practising in the garden.
Thanks Ken, both these methods work and can give great results but for convenience I would go with the extension tubes👍
Great
Thanks for watching 👍
I've got decent results using cheapo extension tubes and a 1970s Nikkor 105mm (f/2.5, regular lens, not macro), but I carry a 1980s 50mm for emergency macros, as it's so small and light. I just hold it reversed, freestyle, no need for a reversing ring!
Must admit never tried reversing a lens without the reversing ring, will have to give that a try. I think you can get some great quality glass for not much with vintage lenses. The Nikkor 105mm sounds like a good bit of glass👍👍
Cheers Scott, you got some cracking images. All the best. 👍📷😎
Glad you enjoyed it Rob, thanks for watching!🙏👍
Great explanation, Scott. I think the extension tubes have got a chance I’m not so sure about reversing the lens, looks like a real pain to me. I’ll just stick to my Canon 100 macro I think 😂. Cheers Keith
I was hoping the reverse lens was going to be easier than it was mate. The problems I had getting a suitable set up was a pain. When you get the right combination it works well but working distance just makes it impractical for most subjects. If you can't afford a dedicated macro lens the macro extensions do make a workable alternative. But if you've got one stick with the macro lens is sound advice!!!😉👍
Great video
Thanks! Glad you found it useful. More macro videos soon 👍
I have a set of 3 extension tubes, they are fun on the Sony kit lens, it is true. I also have the Sony 30mm f3.5 macro lens, extra magnification can be gained using tubes too, although the lens does end up very close to the subject with longer tubes.
Where was the location you filmed in? The little building looks fascinating!
Must admit I was surprised how good the Sony 16-50 was. It's always a bit of a trade off with how much magnification vs distance to subject so very interesting to see what you are using. The little chapel is the remains of St James Chapel near Walesby Notts. I actually went down there as I have an infrared film to finish off and this makes a decent subject if it's not overgrown👍
