Back in the day....before CDs and the internet.....this song was either only heard from the 45 single, or on the radio. Whenever it came on the air, it was always exciting.
Zeppelin would usually release a whole album and no singles but in this case they released the Immigrant song as a single on a '45' this song on the flip side. The album CODA came out after the band broke up in 1980. CODA was compilation of songs they recorded but were never released on an album. Another great song on that album is We're Gonna Groove.
Any other band would have loved to have written and recorded this song,But Zeppelin weren't just any other band,If you can leave a song like this off any album ,Well it speaks for itself.Led Zeppelin were just the best ❤️
Or how about they str8 missed an opportunity with this song. As good as zeppelin were, this song is better than 85% of their catalog & should have been featured earlier. Let’s just be real about it shall we?
This song was the "B" song to the "45" record of the hit "Immigrant" song which was Led Zeppelin's second hit released in 1972 and was more played on the airwaves than "The Immigrant Song." It really was considered "Country" and was on Billboard's Country Chart.
when something this good doesnt make it onto an album you know theyre a GREAT band. coda happened because they were under contract to make an album but disbanded after bonhams death so they (jimmy i THINK) went digging for unreleased tracks
You are playing with fire my friend. My music always comes back to the mighty Zep. I go thru my Beatle phases, The Who, U2 and Springsteen but it always returns, stronger every time , to Led Zeppelin. Their music has layers that takes years of listening, like the Beatles, to peel off. It gets better and better. The rabbit hole is getting deeper.
Great tune. If you Google Led Zeppelin Coda album this song is not on the album. This album was released on the Swan Song label which was Zeppelin's own Record label therefore they were not under contract to realise another album. From Physical Graffiti till Bonham's sad passing. They had carte blanche when they wanted to put out an album
Great choice, glad you didn’t skip over this gem. Constraints on time and locations and touring etc. made recording a little haphazard at times, so songs end up on B sides or left off the album for unknown reasons. Artists usually recorded more songs than an album required just in case. Do some of their early live stuff too if you feel like it. Zep fans always want more.

You're correct, this song is fire, but Zeppelin didn't release singles back in the day...just LPs. Evidently Page couldn't find a place on their album sequence for this great song, but I might be in error.
Atlantic Records released 7 singles in the US & various other countries from the band's first 5 albums (usually over the objections of the band). Zeppelin themselves released 3 US singles from their final 3 studio albums as they came out. The UK didn't get any single releases until 1997!
Thx for the correction people, I believe that Page was at odds with Atlantic over this, as he felt that the full album was the way to appreciate the music.

This was originally written for a compilation album, "The New Age Of Atlantic". The Album was released in 1972. This song was written during the same time as LZ III, however, originally it was only available on a UK Atlantic Records sampler album called The New Age Of Atlantic and release in 1972. Coda is an album composed of unused tracks that Jimmy assembled and with the others, released to cover their contract obligation with Atlantic. Back in the day (at least in my market) this song wasn't played often on the radio due to the lyrics. Robert sings "I got a woman, wanna ball all day." Again, because I'm ancient, lol, to "ball" was a crude euphemism for having sex, as in, "Are you guys balling?" Also, he sings he's "...looking for my street corner girl." which implies she's possibly a prostitute. Maybe not they’re best track but certainly not they’re worst either, this would’ve sat perfectly on Led Zep III.What a great song though I love playing this on the guitar.
I know Hats Off To Roy doesn't get much love but I personally love it more than this coz it its Zep having a stab at the blues that inspired them and all the early rock bands. Perversely though, I think this track in Hats Off's stead on III would have improved the album further. Each to their own I guess. A bit schizo I know. Nobody's right nobody's wrong.
Why was this a throw away song? Because Led Zepplin use to like to fuck with the record companies and their manager wanted to fuck with the record companies even more. Led Zepplin did what they wanted and how they wanted, same reason they released an album without a title.
I know you already did the live version of Since I've Been Loving You but I think you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't take the time to react to the studio version. The live version is good but it is a completely different version and the studio version of this song is a blues masterpiece.
They Messed up not putting this on album. It's one of my top 3 Zep tunes. It's bad as hell.Bad as in Badass. Good Easy beat with Plants vocals overpowering everything.
For 90% of the bands out there this would have been their best song. Yet Zep treat it like it's something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe. Why?
Ironically, this is one of my favorite Zeppelin songs.

No space on the album for it. Vinyl had size limits of about 25 minutes a side.
Maybe not they’re best track but certainly not they’re worst either, this would’ve sat perfectly on Led Zep III.What a great song though I love playing this on the guitar.
I think a lot of Led fans are intrested in Pages electric solos and this isn't
I know Hats Off To Roy doesn't get much love but I personally love it more than this coz it its Zep having a stab at the blues that inspired them and all the early rock bands. Perversely though, I think this track in Hats Off's stead on III would have improved the album further. Each to their own I guess. A bit schizo I know. Nobody's right nobody's wrong.
Why was this a throw away song? Because Led Zepplin use to like to fuck with the record companies and their manager wanted to fuck with the record companies even more. Led Zepplin did what they wanted and how they wanted, same reason they released an album without a title.
That’s awesome lol
Yeah never made it on the previous albums for some reason????
I know you already did the live version of Since I've Been Loving You but I think you would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't take the time to react to the studio version. The live version is good but it is a completely different version and the studio version of this song is a blues masterpiece.
They should have stuck this on LZ III in place of Hats off to Roy Harper. Someone made a bad decision there
Led Zeppelin "throw aways" were better than 99.99% of the garbage released today...
How the absolute FUCK was this song a throwaway?
personally id prefer this to end led zep 3 over hats off to roy harper
it was a bside to imigrant song
They Messed up not putting this on album. It's one of my top 3 Zep tunes. It's bad as hell.Bad as in Badass. Good Easy beat with Plants vocals overpowering everything.
For 90% of the bands out there this would have been their best song. Yet Zep treat it like it's something they scraped off the bottom of their shoe. Why?
🤷🏻♂️
Country Rock??? I don’t think so. Just an acoustic guitar does not a country song make. Blues Rock if anything.
wtf
Fail
