This song is about an experience Robert had in his youth, before Led Zeppelin. In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine (March 13, 1975) the interviewer, Cameron Crowe, asked Robert Plant what gambles he had taken. Plant replied: "Let me tell you a little story behind the song 'Ten Years Gone' on our new album. I was working my ass off before joining Zeppelin. A lady I really dearly loved said, 'Right. It's me or your fans.' Not that I had fans, but I said, 'I can't stop, I've got to keep going.' She's quite content these days, I imagine. She's got a washing machine that works by itself and a little sports-car. We wouldn't have anything to say anymore. I could probably relate to her, but she couldn't relate to me. I'd be smiling too much. Ten years gone, I'm afraid. Anyway, there's a gamble for you." Robert said a lot of focus and effort had been put into the song due to all of the guitar parts Jimmy wrote and had to assemble. He said they'd play anything for a change of pace and to keep loose and out of those in between jams is how Trampled Under Foot and Custard Pie came to be.
I’ve always loved the raspy conviction behind Plant’s voice when he sings, “Do you ever remember me, baby?!” He sounds like a male Janis Joplin, there.
I would say Pink Floyd would be the greatest band of all time. But Led Zeppelin and yes are probably tied for second. There are some others as well but being a baby boomer I'm growing up in the sixties and seventies I'd have seen it all of these bands live in concert I have a different perspective and most of the younger generation who are just discovering the wonderful Talent of these older bands
@@isopropyltoxicity then I guess you haven't heard some of their earlier music like ummagumma, a saucerful of Secrets or animals or dark side of the moon. I think that you must resign yourself to the fact that you are just like the rest of us. Your favorite Zeppelin song is the one you’re listening to at any given moment. You can’t pick one song as the best, you’ll make yourself insane tackling such a monumental task. Sit back and enjoy my friend. ♥️✌🏼😎
I played football in college, and while most were listening to Drake before the game, I ALWAYS listened to this pregame or on the bus. Really just got me in the right frame of mind.
I was a teenager when this album came out l still remember putting on my turn table and listening to it brings back a lot of memories that was like close to fifty years ago sorry I had to wipe a teardrop away.
I'm 78 now. Been a Led Zeppelin fanatic for as long as they've been Led Zeppelin! You really can't pick a favorite one of theirs! Just the name Led Zeppelin makes it the Best!! I almost wish I had never heard them so I can hear all of their music for the first time again! Enjoy all of your Led Zeppelin firsts!
One thing that pops up in Zeppelin's music once in a while is their willingness to slow and even sometimes completely stop the flow of the music. This track has that and it works great. It somehow increases the impact of the music.
This song was originally intended to be an instrumental....before Robert's epic story was later added. Jimmy constructed most of the music for this song in his home studio and presented it to the band in it's nearly finished form.
and then the tapes were stolen...you've seen that video? Anywho, Jimmy Page, arguably, is the greatest ROCK composer in the rock era... there's many more who are also great, but hard to top all those epic PAGE compositions - COMPOSITONS, not songs. Difference? Well, early Beatles are great songs, later Beatles are closer to "compositions." PEACE, ALL.
This particular Led Zeppelin song stands out from the rest of their catalogue. The emotional range of the music spans both sorrow and joy, while staying anchored in the language of Bluesy Hard Rock. This band was truly remarkable.
I love the last verse. Plant almost isn't even singing, it's like he's talking to you. So soft and beautiful. "Taste your love along the way...See your feathers preen" Love how he delivers that line
Zeppelin, like any '70's rock music, gets the "3 song" treatment on the radio, on spotify, etc., still to this day...their musical tapestry and textures are unparalleled...this track was a serious deep cut; you had to buy this album, and listen with intent, to even discover it, like many other Zeppelin deep-cut classics
I got this album on Christmas Day the year it came out in Canada. About 50 years and it never gets old. In the light(actually all 4 sides) was my theme song for reading the entire Lord Of the Rings trilogy buy that New Year's night. Walked the dog to "Kashmir" this morning, here in the Portuguese sunshine.
Over time, this became my favorite Led Zeppelin album. Not that there is ANY negative to be said about the others. But there are a handful of tunes on this record that I just love and can listen to forever. Ten Years Gone is one of the most emotive and immersive songs they recorded, in my opinion.
I played a side of this album almost every morning of the eighth grade while I got ready for middle school. I'd take both my stereo speakers in the bathroom while I showered. This is a great love song. Edit I just remembered I was already madly in love with the lady I married. I'm 60.5. We've been together for 40 plus. Married 27.
*Morning Bro* This one is a Plant/Page baby from end to end.! Pause for a second and think back from the beginning " *Good times Bad times* " thru now.! Aside from The Beatles, have you EVER heard such diverse influences, genres or growth from a band.? I consider myself extremely fortunate to have seen them live twice.! Pouring Whiskey into fake binoculars on one side and rolled.... well you figure it out, on the other side....:) Have a good day, *David* .....
Let's all guess what Salvo will say after hearing this song....add the last word to this line " This might be my _________" .....hahaha....great reaction brother!
Physical Graffiti came out when I was a junior in high school. Great music was coming out all the time during those years and my friends and I made sure to buy the new albums the moment they hit the stores. When we gathered in school the day after buying and listening to this record we seemed to be in stunned reverence. We could sense that it would last the test of time. Watching you react to it validates that belief.
It's hard to explain but back then in simpler times, Time seemed to stop when amazing albums were released. Fans would play this non-stop for months - living in the moment. [edit] If you're interested in Iconic albums - try 'Sweet: Desolation Boulevard'. One of those albums one can enjoy each and every song.
Sweet! Great Call, man! Sweet's Des. Blvd was SUCH an important "one of my first albums" for me. My two years older brother probably got it, but I recall wearing out the needle playing it on our living room record player jamming to "deep cuts" like Into the Night and A.C.D.C. and "I wanna be committed." I was in 4th or 5th grade. What fun! I read somewhere that in 1975 or so Zeppelin members were totally digging and dancing in public to Ballroom Blitz at some record label party!
It's so much fun watching you discover music l have known since the 70's. It reminds me of the grandkids going through my vinyl collection. Yes l am the cool Grandpa. Freaks them out when they find out l seen most of them live and l show them ticket stub's.
Glad, as always, that you approve. (To put it mildly, lol!) That long, drawn-out "Ooooohhh..." of Robert's as the outro begins never fails to slay me. It's like he's having an acute attack of wistful nostalgia as he contemplates the past. I get that more and more these days... As I hurtle towards my dotage!
I first heard heard Ten Years Gone out in the wild on the radio and it was the reason I went out and bought a bunch of Led Zeppelin albums and listened to them for the first time. 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 song was the catalyst of my LZ fanship.
This is clearly one of their best songs ever this is also clearly the best Zep album, how was my childhood musically 🎼 from beatles as a kid to Zeppelin as a teen all that great music in between
I was likely 19 when this album released. Already my favorite band. This would, at times, be my favorite album. And became the band to which I would always use as the standard when listening to any music going forward. I like a lot of music. But never tire of this
I've been listening to this song a lot lately. It brings up memories of all of my ex's. All but one of them more than ten years gone. I'm 66, and I never did get married. Never spent the night with any of the women I dated.
Many have Physical Graffiti at the top of their list of greatest hard rock albums ever. It was also a time when many artists made songs and albums written to be listened to on headphones.
Good morning to you all. This entire album side always brings me back to my college days. It was my gf at the time and my favorite music to listen too when we wanted to. .. .. .. Always love the reactions SG.God Bless
Glad you liked this. Remember, for some dueling guitar earthshaking blues try Johnny Winter And Live It's My Own Fault. I didn't steer you wrong when I suggested this Zeppelin trip, and I hope you'll take a gander with the above. No reactor has done this, so I believe you'd be the first. Page's layered guitar composition really shines on this one.

She had to have heard this song. You'd think. Wonder what she thought of it
Steven Tyler once said "do me wrong and I'll write a song about you and fix yo ass!"
I’ve always loved the raspy conviction behind Plant’s voice when he sings, “Do you ever remember me, baby?!” He sounds like a male Janis Joplin, there.
This isn’t the only song where I’ve thought exactly the same thing.
There has never been a band quite like them they are the GOATS

This fucking album, man. 🔥
You said it, bro.
It should come as no surprise to you that this is Robert Plant's favorite Led Zeppelin album 🙂
Yeah, Plant considers Kashmir his favorite -- this album abounds with timeless zled Zepp classics
What makes ZEPPELIN THE GREATEST BAND OF ALL TIME is the FACT, their music cannot be improved upon by anyone!
Positively right on that!!! It will be untouchable for ETERNITY.
