- Gruyeres is a beautiful old historical village in the upper Saane Valley and an important tourist resort in Switzerland. The medieval town consists mainly of the village and the church which is surrounded by a city wall and the castle on the hill.
The first documented mention of the village was in 1144, but a settlement probably already existed since the 10th century. The name Gruyeres is probably derived from the heraldic animal, the crane.

Gruyeres ist ein schönes altes historisches Dorf im oberen Saanetal und ein wichtiger Touristenort in der Schweiz. Die mittelalterliche Stadt besteht hauptsächlich aus dem Dorf und der Kirche, die von einer Stadtmauer und dem Schloss auf dem Hügel umgeben ist.
Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung des Dorfes stammt aus dem Jahr 1144, eine Siedlung bestand aber wahrscheinlich schon seit dem 10. Jahrhundert. Der Name Gruyeres leitet sich wahrscheinlich vom Wappentier, dem Kranich, ab.
