Just imagine, seige engineers back in the day had these things figured out perfectly, and not only could achieve massive range, but hit targets with pinpoint accuracy.
When I made a much smaller trebuchet for my high school woodshop, I found that the pin angled up and not down gets better distance and power, cuz you’re trying to release it the moment the trebuchet stalls the swing arm so you don’t waste potential energy. Also, try getting a rubber mat as the sling, with large and robust surfaces they will grip the rubber well when it compresses the sling to pull it

It’s a matter of weight ratios, arm length and release angle. The weight should be 275:1 counter weight vs projectile. Arm length should be 5:1 around the axle. You want the projectile to launch the exact moment the launch arm and sling are perpendicular to the ground. This should allow you to optimize the efficiency of the trebuchet.
Definitely this, slings are the most difficult part to get right on trebuchets and this one is too long. I’m sure with the size of this trebuchet once the sling is just perfect it’ll launch some insane distances.

To help put more power into each swing, chock the wheels so all energy has to be transferred into the object and not into rocking the trebuchet Love the build mate.
From what I recall of testing people have done, wheels actually improve the efficiency of trebuchets usually, since it let's the trebuchet essentially self correct to optimize the fall path of the weight, so more of the energy from it is transferred into the arm of the trebuchet, rather than into rocking the frame back and forth as the weight rotates around the axle at the top. Basically you want the weight to fall as straight down as possible, and being mounted on wheels means the momentum slides the whole chassis just a bit more in line with that (back when the weight is high, and forward when the weight is low), rather than having the chassis try and fight it to hold its position. Trebuchets are cool!
I can't believe Colin just jogs up to the landing zone before it hits like there isn't 500 lbs of metal about to spontaneously implode ten feet away from him. That safety tie definitely works!
In America we have an annual "punkin chunkin" contest where all of the contestants build torsion catapults, trbuchets, or air cannons to launch the pumpkins as far as possible. Maybe you should consider entering?
You should meet up with Tom Stanton! He's done some impressive work with his own, although considerably smaller, trebuchet and went trough many iterations to optimize his sling and the optimal release for the projectile.
Ttebuches were used to smash rooves and horizontal fortifications, as the projectile was coming with a vertical trajectory; for vertical walls catapults were used, which launched stuff at a more steep angle, to hit more perpendicularly to the target possible.
Colin if you let it slide back and forth on the wheels the projectile will go around 10% farther because the counterweight can fall straighter giving more power. also I love this project :)
I think its the other way around, a lot of movement energy is wasted because the trebouche is moving backwards as the shot goes off, nullifying some of the thrust.
@@chucknorris2952 so that not quite true, when you're optimizing a trebuchet you want the maximum amount of energy going into the projectile, by letting the trebuchet wiggle a bit on the ground the center of mass of the whole assembly is more efficiently able to drop straight down, see how much the counterweight shakes around after launching? That's all energy that's just been wasted. Tom Stanton has a great set of videos on UA-cam about the process of optimizing a trebuchet. He addresses the wheels situation here: ua-cam.com/video/KpFTyE-wiNo/v-deo.html
@@chucknorris2952 I see why you might think that but if you go through the mechanics (or better just watch someone else go through it) it helps to let the trebuchet "rock".
Brings back memories of when me and a few mates built one after being inspired by AoE like 20 years ago. We cobbled together a 12ft one from some spare bits and bobs on my family's farm - mostly permapine logs and coach screws. Counterweight was a 50kg block of concrete. Axle was a big bolt from a salvage yard lubricated with a bunch of grease. It wasn't exactly built with precision, but we played around with the slip pin angle and sling and got it to throw fruit in a rather consistent manner.
You can add weight by filling the gaps with water. If you put a lid on the box, you could probably replace the rocks, all together, so you simply have to drain the tank, when needed.
Hi Colin! Congratulations on this massive build! 2 thoughts which might resolve/improve your "bag issues": 1) try throwing more spherical projectiles, as i'm afraid that the corners of your square metallic box might by too agressive for the bag...? 2) i've seen you (sometimes?) placed the 2 strings of the bag on the each side of the projectile and i think that might twist your release. I'ld recommend placing the fixed string on top of the projectile and the loose one under it. Thus the bag will already be alined with it's release's plan and hopefully that will make it smoother. Cheers & good luck for next shots!
Pretty sure that one shot fired so well, due to the weight of that particular item, and the length of the sling worked well for that setup. Weight of the item fired makes all the difference. It looks like a slightly shorter sling would help a bit too.
*@colinfurze* 9:55 You want to release the projectile so it starts flying as close to a 45* angle (relative to the horizon), and as you can see, that shot released almost perfectly.

So much this!!
He basically lives down the road too
Ttebuches were used to smash rooves and horizontal fortifications, as the projectile was coming with a vertical trajectory; for vertical walls catapults were used, which launched stuff at a more steep angle, to hit more perpendicularly to the target possible.
Colin if you let it slide back and forth on the wheels the projectile will go around 10% farther because the counterweight can fall straighter giving more power. also I love this project :)
I totally don't get what that means...
But I like the sound of that
I think its the other way around, a lot of movement energy is wasted because the trebouche is moving backwards as the shot goes off, nullifying some of the thrust.
@@progamer-xp5ss @colinfurze ua-cam.com/video/-gn2RGPqe_A/v-deo.html

Yes, you got the joke. Well done.
How far can it toss a cow? My neighbor is taunting me and said my father smelled of elderberries.

You can add weight by filling the gaps with water. If you put a lid on the box, you could probably replace the rocks, all together, so you simply have to drain the tank, when needed.

@@unicorn_fcker I probably agree but “bro” is cringe in itself.
Hi Colin!
Congratulations on this massive build! 2 thoughts which might resolve/improve your "bag issues":
1) try throwing more spherical projectiles, as i'm afraid that the corners of your square metallic box might by too agressive for the bag...?
2) i've seen you (sometimes?) placed the 2 strings of the bag on the each side of the projectile and i think that might twist your release. I'ld recommend placing the fixed string on top of the projectile and the loose one under it. Thus the bag will already be alined with it's release's plan and hopefully that will make it smoother.
Cheers & good luck for next shots!

Should've invited Tom Stanton over, he seems to be the UK's youtuber-trebuchet expert

Pretty sure that one shot fired so well, due to the weight of that particular item, and the length of the sling worked well for that setup. Weight of the item fired makes all the difference. It looks like a slightly shorter sling would help a bit too.

9:55 You want to release the projectile so it starts flying as close to a 45* angle (relative to the horizon), and as you can see, that shot released almost perfectly.
Tom Stanton has trebuchets nailed, you could ask him?

If you notice, that the entire trebuchet is not chocked in place, and the wheels roll freely and the whole thing moves quite a bit, absorbing a lot of the would be forward momentum as well, so after you build a proper sling, try adding some brakes!
