    I've recently inherited a shih tzu from a family member. I've had her on/off her whole life but never had to groom her, or understood what a groomer did to achieve her look. Thank you so much for this wonderful video! I can now picture what's being done to my girl and I feel so much more relaxed about it. I can only hope her groomer is as confident, gentle and sweet as you are. Thanks so much!

    Beautiful work...I know some about grooming have a one year old who I have clipped down because his hair was matting up overnight and I used a flea comb, slicker brush and another comb on him everyday and when it got to the point that he got very large mats 2 days in a row I thought it's time...so thank you for your video. Never had a shih tzu and he's really different but in a good way. hated to cut his lovely coat but it is summer, after all.

    I didn’t ignorantly jump into shih tzu ownership. I knew grooming would be a deal. But I also knew my realistic budget. I was prepared to take on the task. I might have underestimated grooming. I grew up with big dog mixes and mutts that lived outdoors by demand and were about to shed it out. I knew it would be much larger challenge. I didn’t understand it tho lol. I ignorantly have now bought 5 sets of clippers under $50 with guides and thought for sure against grow patterns was best practice. They have all failed so hard to give an even cut. I knew it shouldn’t take a dozen passes to level the same area with itself. My dude is almost 1 year now and I finally hit a realization that this was a mildly traumatic experience for both of us each time. I even got a hanging harness for his legs because he was jerking away so bad. He stays still in the harness but I honestly think its him being frozen in terror. Turns out I knew nothing. I am not excited about using scissors because that’s probably a honed skill. And it’s more labor then I was hoping… still quicker then then my methods though. I figure if we have to do this… maybe I should put some effort into learning how to make it comfortable for us both because it’s not a good time. I guilt feed him like a pack of hotdogs each time and that’s not great. This is wildly helpful. I appreciate that your taking the time to share this even though one might think it reduces your potential clients, because I was getting there and dreading that hard. I think I will share you in the subreddit for shih tzus and try to help boost your audience some because I really do think this is valuable and there a lot of new owners there that are working through journey this too. I am gonna go check out some more of your videos and am feeling substantially more confident that my dude and I will survive better moving forward. Already ordered better quality clippers too. I was not ignorant getting this dog, I adore him so much, perfect temperament, personality and size for the companion i was seeking. I mostly nailed it. Grooming has a been a challenging endeavor but I am pretty committed doing better for him. Also thanks for the reassurance that sometimes you make them bleed. Probably the longest and most ridiculous comment ever but seriously thank you. This is a game changer. I have been browsing videos for a bit looking for clear guidance and I found it here!

  • @chandraprimlani8810

    What a good obedient little boy, to allow u to groom him without any problems. I have a lovable Shih Tzu as well. Boy or boy, he's nowhere like this well behaved Shih Tzu. Will not allow the groomer to do his face, eyes and nails. Good with his puppy cut. Been grooming him since he was 4 months. His first groomer managed him better but my baby constantly got an ear infection and allergies after grooming. Ear infection was due to plucking his hair from his ears. Had to stop sending him to her. Now I have a groomer coming home. She's loving and my baby loves her as well. But no way can she get anywhere close to his under eyes. I love your tutorial. Very helpful. Thank you. Have a blessed weekend. 🐶🐶🐶❤🐕🐕

    Hi! I found your channel as I was desperately looking for tips how to groom my shih tzu. She’s a mess, its been 3 months since her last haircut (we groomed a month before we were put on lockdown) and now her hair’s all over her face. Plus her nails are crazy long. Do you think I can do a good job trimming her if all I have are scissors? Or should I just wait till this is all over? Would appreciate any tips!

    • @LoveofGrooming
      @LoveofGrooming  4 роки тому +2

      Hi, it will depend if you are confident or not. If you are nervous it's best to brush and comb daily.
      Some people only use scissors. Just be careful

    Is it better to use clippers to cut most of the hair short and then wash/blow and then clip again?

    • @LoveofGrooming
      @LoveofGrooming  6 місяців тому

      It depends on the amount of hair and how short you want it. If the dog hasn't been groomed in over 8 weeks and the coat is very long its best to clip first. If the dog is groomed on a 4 to 6 week basis and no mats then wash first.

      This dog is well behaved because he was groomed since a puppy and groomed on a regular schedule of every six weeks. Use positive reinforcement. Brush and comb him everyday and praise when he lets you do what you need to do. Take your time and start off with 5 minute intervals and increase the times when he is letting you groom him. Bring to professional groomers by weekly or every month so he can get used to it.
      Put him on a steady surface at waist level. Praise and treat!

    Can anyone reccomend a good brand of clipper for shitzu with a thick coat ? My dogs fur is so thick it takes me hours to do it..if not days cuz I get tired of doing it, with the one i have i find it better to even use no blade but then sometimes it ends up looking ridiculous and take too much off,lol.
