For the vets in here, why do the drivers go to the inside on the straights? I feel like it’s a longer path go go over to the left and then back to the right for the next corner. It would also be the dirty side of the track would it not be? Or does everyone do it every lap?
closing off the inside before the turn is a standard defense procedure in racing. due to the speeds drivers are doing at Indy, closing it early while maintaining top speed dictates that line. but that's just my opinion
The wall actually creates a quantifiable amount of aero drag against the front-right area of the bodywork. In Cup, Kyle Larson always amazes me with his ability to use that same push in the corners of almost any traditional oval and find speed where others couldn't.
It's also an opportunity to break the tow for any cars behind, depending on how acutely the driver turns in.
Should have added - the difference is that the air is being used to "push" the car away from the wall in the corners in the latter's case, whereas here at Indy it would only work against the car overall. Not sure how best to really explain it if this all doesn't make sense.
I think it's because the indycar tires are staggered on ovals, meaning the right side tires are bigger in circumference then the left side, making it easier to turn left, the drivers are allowing the cars to carry that momentum after that left turn on to the straight so that they don't scuba off the speeds. The drivers would then flow back to the right to enter turns 1 or 3.

Please put lap times. Speeds (MPH) mean nothing.
The speeds are what they qualify on so they mean a lot. BUT I reckon they should show the lap times as well cause that’s what matters in the race. Maybe flick between the two every few seconds?
Lap times at the 500 are pretty much always about 30 seconds, give or take. The top cars will pretty much be within a tenth or less of each other. Using MPH instead of time at the speedway makes it a bit easier to visualize/differentiate. They’ve used MPH instead of time at the 500 for as long as I can remember, since at the end of the day they mean the same thing in an inverse relationship.
@@mitchellmelrose9175 40 seconds, not 30. Fastest race lap has been at around 39 or 40 seconds since 1989. All time race lap record is 38.119 (236.103mph) in 1996. No other race lap has been in the 38's. Fastest qualifying lap is 37.895 (237.498mph) also in 1996.
Those are lap times, mph is average lap speed, so break out your calc and divide by 2.5 miles.
