    I had to chuckle 🤭 at your argument with your X11 instructor. Those of us who are real time pilots seem to all have problems flying “their way “ rather than the way we were taught and have always practiced the procedures at hand.Learning to fly their pattern drove me nuts 🥜 and I went back to flying my way (the proper way) as soon as I completed each segment.

      Being totally new (1hr so far ) agree that the landing tutorial is cruel, Also find the plane has a really strong desire to turn left and would like to see that mentioned in your video and how to counter that.

      @@PWingert1966 That turn is actually a real-world consequence of the non-compensated torque produced by single-engine aircraft. Flying something like a Cessna actually requires some continued rudder input to counter the torque forces of the engine.
      This is also why the rotors or turbines on multi-engine aircraft rotate in alternate directions. The torque forces are neutralized.

      Over 3 years later and the X-Plane flight school tutorials have not been improved or enhanced in ANY way. As a new player I think Jeff was completely reasonable in criticism and not "very hostile" at all. "lol" They are poor in just about every way.

      Jeff Favignano Hey nice video. To play the game and fly the planes do you have to have a joystick and that stuff or can you use your keyboard to fly cause I just got the beta today and I have no joystick. And I was wondering if could use the keyboard to fly

    • @JacksonLaRue
      @JacksonLaRue 7 років тому +1

      It is technically possible to fly using only a keyboard and mouse, but 99.9% of simers use some sort of aux controls. This is because it's so much easier to control the plane and much more relaistic. Grab yourself a basic usb joystick and have fun!

  • @bonchie1

    Nothing wrong with slipping a 172 with flaps in. Older 172s with 40 degrees of flaps had restrictions with full flaps but otherwise it's not an issue.

    Thanks for that, I was constantly messing up the landing tutorial, usually coming in too low and "landing" short of the runway. It would be better if, like you explained, they gave you air speeds to aim for to intersect the glide slope and then follow it down. There just isn't enough detail in the tutorials.

  • @ColinHudson

    very good landing - and I actually learned something new. That rudder and turn to drop altitude but hold the plane steady was cool. Im just watching these for fun I already fly but now im going to continue to watch and see what other trucks you have

    This was both an excellent vid and a frustrating one. Excellent commentary for the most part. Very good teacher. However I would like to give some feedback. Youre running through the tutorials for the game. I dont know how many times you had to advertise that you have had experience, and how wrong the sim was compared to real life. Tone it down a little and remember your audience. Sign out with a summary if you need to.

      From experience people who constantly tell you how much they know don’t really know much at all. I have been using xplane for ages but wanted to see if this would make me learn anything I missed. The guy has a thing for saying he knows stuff, but I’ve been on planes like this one in the real world many times as a passenger and never heard a pilot say stuff like that... they just fly the plane, if that would just explain stuff.

    Hi Jeff, thanks for making all these vids, great stuff. I have a little question. How did you get that pilot in the cockpit on the outside views? Normally the default cessna of X-Plane 11 comes without a pilot in the cockpit.
    I asked the same question on their forums and the say it isn't possible unless you are familiar with planemaker and placing 3D objects in the cockpit. Is this is what you did and is it possible to distribute this to tohers?
    Regards,
    Eddy

      yup haha, to be fair on my FAA checkride we did a forward slip with full flaps. He said would you ever do a slip with flaps even though the 172 tells you not to? My answer was absolutely YES in an emergency if I needed to lose altitude. He was happy with that and asked me to perform a slip with flaps.

    Good vid Jeff, Subbed just for X-plane due to me training for my commercial pilots license. Few questions though. What the standard circuit height? Here in Australia is 1000ft. Also is the standard circuit pattern a right hand circuit? Here it's a left hand circuit with the turn starting at 45 degrees to the RW for downwind and base.
    Thanks for the content.

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  7 років тому

      I have always used 1000 AGL so if the field elevation is 532 ft we would shoot for 1500. I would use 1100 as the safety altitude before starting the crosswind of the the pattern.

  • @jacklawrie2037
    @jacklawrie2037 7 років тому

    In my opinion for single engine GA aircraft, it's best to overshoot the glide slope to give ample distance in case of an engine out. There is plenty of runway length, so it's not really much of an issue if you overshoot the landing markers. However, your experience flying a lot of heavy aircraft has probably encouraged slope approaches, which by all means is correct but unnecessary for smaller aircraft.

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  7 років тому

      yes that is true, depends on how you want to train for landings. We always shot approaches on the 3.0 degree path probably to keep that in our heads for moving to IFR and bigger airplanes.

      you turn to final just before you cross the runway. picture the centerline of the runway going on infinitely, you want to turn final at a point where you won't over shoot or under shoot that line, it's really just a visual thing, no real gauge for it

    Hey Jeff, interesting look...well maybe XPlane 11 being in Beta they will get the feedback to tweak the flight school...when you were getting your Pvt ticket did your CFI teach you 1000 feet AGL for pattern or the 750 for recip & 1000 for turbine? (granted PAJN may have different Altitudes for local conditions but...) If it was me in the right seat I'd brief the objective PRIOR to activating the lesson (IAS on Climb-out, target altitude & power setting(s) so the student who is drinking from the fire-hose has a clue in case they miss a text box...too bad the virtual CFI doesn't have a "Say Again" key to display last text box...just my 2 cents

    • @bulwinkle
      @bulwinkle 7 років тому +1

      gamerx9191 Yes, the engine and prop are effectively a huge gyroscope and if you've ever played with one you'll know that they resist any change so in an aircraft starting to roll you experience that resistance as a push to the left. If the engine turned the prop in the opposite direction you'd feel a push to the right.

    • @jamesoren7238
      @jamesoren7238 7 років тому +2

      That great article explains it a lot better, this is just the way my instructor explained torque to me, and I found the analogy helped a lot: It's the electric drill. You pick up the drill and squeeze the trigger - the drill bit spins freely. Then you mark your spot and press the drill against the wall and squeeze the trigger again. This time the drill tries to twist your hand because the drill bit is encountering resistance from the wall. That's what's happening to the plane - the blades are pushing air out of the way, that resistance acts as a force to roll the plane in the opposite direction (counter clockwise from the pilot's view). Adding more throttle is like pushing the drill deeper - there's more resistance, so the opposing force tries to roll your plane harder.
      Don't get too caught in the fine print, it's just to help visualize what's happening. It helped me get used to the practicality of it when flying rather than just "learning it". :)

  • @LordSStorm

    My problem with your instruction style is you've assumed a bunch of knowledge, (which the game did not) so ailerons, and flaps were mentioned, but you didn't tell us how to do it, which differs from the first video. You also mention the glide slope but don't show us how to identify it.

  • @VroodenTheGreat
    @VroodenTheGreat 4 роки тому

    The reason you were so high on that landing is because the game said to nose down so the runway is ABOVE the glare shield. It TOLD you to descend immediately, you just didn't do it.

    Why does it actually turn left when you apply the throttle?

      Jeremiah Jefferson Bunyan because the propeller is rotating to the left.

    What a 172 "should" do on takeoff is 74 kts. I have no idea where you're getting 80 from...

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  7 років тому

      I am getting 80 from flight school

    • @BlakeBigfoot
      @BlakeBigfoot 7 років тому

      Jeff Favignano All teachers teach it differently. I seem to remember 64/65 from my training..and technically, 65 is Vx, so you would use that in most normal climbouts. That being said, Vy ranges from about 69 to 79 kts, depending upon altitude, so if you're following that number, 74 would be the median.

    • @jfavignano
      @jfavignano  7 років тому

      Absolutely, we would use Vy when we were aiming for it but normal takeoff was always 80 knots on departure. Same when I flew the 182T.

      Probably this or prepar3d both are constantly being updated prepar uses the fsx engine but Lockheed Martin is slowly making the engine much better In a lot of ways and it's 64bit which fsx was not.

      P3D isn't 64 bit. Not yet. Unconfirmed rumors that version 4 will be though.
