Of course if Robert Taft had committed to supporting NATO and not infuriated Eisenhower with his staunch isolationist beliefs Ike wouldn’t have run and Taft would have most likely been the nominee. Then the election looks a lot more interesting. I think Mr. Republican (Taft) would have had a much harder time winning over independents and moderate Democrats with his more conservative views.
I watched this video as the bus home passed the capitol in Washington DC. My house was several states north and it was a long, rainy night on the ride home. A wise man said that if the electoral college ever gives out an honorary degree, it should go to Adlai Stevenson.
Adlai Stevenson later served in the Kennedy/Johnson administration as U.N. Ambassador, from 1962 until his passing in 1965. As U.N. Ambassador, he received rather rude treatment in Dallas in October of 1963, and advised the President NOT to go there. Just imagine how different history might be if Kennedy had taken his advice.
Because he was the titular head of the party at the time and was better known than Sen. Kefauver or Gov. Harriman, the other two major candidates that year. On C-SPAN's The Contenders, Newton Minow, who worked for Adlai during his campaigns stated that according to various sources if Ike had known Adlai was going to be the nominee in '52 he would have not run for president. Adlai also did not believe Ike would have made a bad president. These two guys had tremendous respect for one another.
"... according to various sources if Ike had known Adlai was going to be the nominee in '52 he would have not run for president." Either not said or just words to please-and Ike was a master people pleaser. Not running against Adlai in 1952 would have meant also not running against him in 1956. That would have almost certainly meant Ike would never be president, being too old to run in 1960, given his heart troubles. Ike played the reluctant recruit, but I suspect Patton was right during WWII when he told other generals that Ike already had his eyes on the White House.
Elections in the 1950s and 1960s: It's hard to choose which of these two great candidates would make the best President. Elections in the 2010s and 2020s: It's hard to choose which of these two unqualified idiots would make the least worst President.
My Father served with the Combat Engineers in the ETO and came home with Two Purple Hearts, General Eisenhower was his CO technically speaking...he voted for Stevenson, Twice, and would've happily voted for him a third time given the chance.
In another time maybe. Adlai in 1952 might have been but by 1956 he was pretty well washed up. I honestly don't know why they renominated him after the thrashing he took in 1952
Mr. Stevenson, you were the governor of my home state of Illinois, and I think you would have been a decent president. BUT you went up against General freaking Eisenhower twice, who just happens to be my favorite President. Sorry.
President Kudsi, I don’t know, by the time of the 1952 presidential election, there were two wars: The Korean War and Cold War. Eisenhower ended the Korean War, but not the Cold War.
I think they should bring back these types of campaign songs. Imagine a Trump 2024 ad to the tune of Down & Out from Bugsey Malone... "Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump, Trump!" etc.
@Michael1966W Could have fooled me! I only had to watch this ad seven times before I understood what it was about and that I was supposed to vote for someone.
That may be so, but remember he was drafted and had no desire to be president in '52. And honestly Jesus couldn't have beat Ike. But I think Adlai would have made a good president.
Right people'll totally remember everything about the Depression 20 years later. If four to eight years ago of madness and insanity can be forgotten and reblamed on the incumbent, then no duh no one'll remember much about 20 years ago. So uh,where's the beef about himself?
the difference from then and now..is that back then they sang cheesy ass songs and medleys about their misery...today, there is still misery alright, but now its all over that damn twitter and facebook .
Pretty straightforward, it's just about how farmers got their homes foreclosed because of the Great Depression (in the ad, 1931, notably the year before the 1932 election which brought FDR to power), so if you like the New Deal, keep voting for the Democrats. In reality, the Republicans largely still accepted the New Deal consensus, and the bigger issues this election were really anticommunism and Truman.
The party switch is a myth. There was, however, a shift of ideology in the Republican party, however that happened with Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, however the conservative element was already a wing in the party, and it only overridden the progressive wing.

Senator Robert Taft gave Eisenhower a run for his money in the primary.
