- Protesters marched and spoke in Australia this week, during an official day of mourning for the late Elizabeth II. The protesters want to do away with the monarchy, as one marcher told Reuters, "The monarchy represents everything that's wrong with the world today.” Australia is one of the Commonwealth nations, and technically is a constitutional monarchy. Charles III is the king of Australia. The queen’s death has occasioned a reassessment of the role of the monarchy.

The queen requested that public funds for helping to heat homes for poorer Brits during the winter be used for her wealthy relatives. The monarchy is in fact also responsible for this mess. Also, why not use the tax money going to the royals for social programs instead? Much better for society.

It’s a hard topic to discuss if Australia should be a republic country or not, being Australian myself. The indigenous were treated poorly under the monarch for decades, and we have had a royal come to our country since Meghan and Harry came in 2018 (since they got married and had to go to the country once). But we have been ruled by the royals for so long, plus Australia is part of the Commonwealth (being that Australia is the best country at the Commonwealth games). Furthermore, we will probably have to change our flag if we come a republic since our flag has the Union Jack on it, symbolising the Commonwealth and the royals.

If we do become a republic country, who even gets to decide what the flag gets changed to. The Government? I imagine them just putting their heads together, cooking up various different designs and then letting the vote go out to the people 😅

You`re getting your head of state for free. A president will cost a lot of money. He/she will need a presidential palace, security, staff, travel, and a huge salary. The idea is daft. This is my thoughts. I'm Australian and the monarch has absolutely not effected us in any way as long as I've been alive.

To be honest I don't think it's a massive deal. Most people in Australia rarely ever talk about the royal family as they're just figureheads.
I think the main problem a lot of people have in Australia with the royal family is what they stand for, which is colonialism. Of course, we don't pay for the royal family so many have just left the issue and it's not like the royal family bring in tourism for Australia like they do in the UK. I personally don't mind as I didn't even realise the King/Queen were the head of state in Australia till I was like 14, but I do think the royal family needs to shake up their institution if they want to remain relevant.
How could they possibly be relevant to us at all?

I wasn’t aware that Australia was apart of the Monarchy prior to these recent events. I suppose I just assumed & held Australians with independence.? They’ve appeared to think more separately from England in my previous opinion, but it appears I may have been mistaken? Certainly gives me another look at what I thought I knew.
Australia is a commonwealth realm. They’re totally independent countries with independent government and autonomy, but recognizes the monarch of UK as their monarch too.
The Stolen Generation continued well into the 70s and Aboriginals were classed as only 'flora and fauna' until the 70s also. The Queen was aware of everything yet she chose to do nothing.

Charles at one point wanted to be Governor-General of Australia years ago, akin to his great uncle, Prince Henry Duke of Gloucester, but the Prime Minister of Australia at the time declined, stating that he wanted Australians to hold that role, not foreigners.

I believe that the protesters were wrong and that they should protest at Australia's prime Minister instead.
Look at Kuwait for example. It used to be colonized by Britain (For protection reasons) and yet, even before its independence in 1961, they didn't affect the local population that much. Ofc things happened after its independence (Like the rise of businesses, the changes of currency, the invasion from Iraq, and etc) but once again, Britain did not affect Kuwait's local population that much.
If the protesters said they couldn't afford heaters, why not ask the Prime Minister to make heaters more affordable? If the aboriginal protesters said they were hurt by the British monarch for decades, why not ask the Prime Minister of Australia to give them perks like the fact Germany gives passports to survivors/victims of the Holocaust?
