This is extremely well made pal! One of my favourite Monkeys' tunes.
I got the impression his ex lover had passed away, and he see's her sister as the 'closest' you can get to the deceased. There is also a counselling establishment in Sheffield called "Cornerstone" so i think the sister and Alex were both getting counselling dealing with the loss. Just my two cents !
P.S. as a fellow Irishman I had to subscribe keep it up buddy
Daniel Fox Cheers man appreciate the good feedback!
Love your take on the song and it’s something I never even thought about! That’s the genius of the writing on tracks like this, everyone has an interpretation 💯
Nice one for subscribing 🇮🇪😃✌🏻
The idea that you want to begin a relationship with your dead ex's sister, is , in my opinion, a sick move. What's that has to do with love ? What if your dead ex , doesn't have a sister ? What if your dead ex has a brother ? I know, i've been sarcastic, but still, what's the point , anyway ? And i loved that song...
@@mihaelanegritu1709 Just because you find it sick or it doesn't make sense to you does not change the meaning of the song haha. You can interpret it any way you want, I was just giving my own opinion on it, that shouldn't stop you from enjoying the song!
@@fanieldox Look, haha, i wasn't arguing with anyone, not even you.I took your comment , and i made mine. What's this agressivity ( or "haha") laughing ?
@@mihaelanegritu1709 It wasnt aggresive at all hence the "haha". Your comment made little, to no sense. Have a good day
Battleship, rusty hook and parrot's are all names related with pirates because he wants to convey the idea that he is searching for a lost treasure! great vid
I like your interpretation.. very cool! 💯

"Because she was always a bitch to me..is what the sister said..just to be clear..they both gave me nothing but kindness." Alex Turner.
Alex Turner is a great singer and an even better story teller
100% agree Emma! 👍
"Well it didn't end well with the sister. She married a Chef." Turner.
Here’s my take... don’t cry:
So his love has passed away and our protagonist is slowly losing his mind. He sees multiple girls at different pubs/bars that he thought was her even one was “close enough to be [her] ghost.” And one even hugged him “really tightly” so he’s able to get other women... until he calls them by her name. She’s stuck in his head. On his way home he made his ride take a longer way because he smells her scent on the seatbelt. He wants to be as close as he can to her. We don’t know how long she’s passed but he’s scared that he will “forget [her] face” so he wants to know where her hiding place is. He can’t come to terms she’s gone and she’s only hiding. Lastly he sees her sister and she is the only person who understands his pain and grieve so she allows him to call her by her deceased sisters name.
Beautifully written song
Exactly what I think
have mercy im gonna cry
That's why everyone cries when seeing them singing this live
ive heard a fascinating theory that the lover is actually dead, and each verse is him slowly losing his sanity. “cornerstone” is also a mental health facility in england, and seeing her sister in the cornerstone is a representation of her struggling mentally due to the death of her sister. to cope, the two mourn together, and she lets him call her whatever he wants to try make it seem like her sister isnt dead.
also heard a theory that the “sister” is actually a prostitute, and “the middle man” is her pimp. “im really not supposed to” suggests she doesnt allow clients to call her ex lover’s names. love this song !!
That's the beauty of this song isn't it.. the joy of the writing opens it up to many interpretations. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
That’s what I always thought! I am happy I’m not alone
It is also worth noting that all the places that Alex mentioned are reminiscent of pirates. (battleship, rusty hook and parrot's beak)
It's as if the search for the beloved is a treasure hunt
For me this song has a very simple yet very relatable meaning (at least for most guys)
The song is about a kinda drunk guy who picked a girl at a bar, he was really into her but she disappeared in a blink of an eye, so he starts his quest from bar to bar to find her hiding place( The Rusty Hook, The Battleship, The Cornerstone).
He doesn't know her very well that's why he confuses her at every bar and calls every girl her name. He realizes that he doesn't quite remember her face, that's why he is worried and thinks it was all his imagination. Note that as the night progresses he's getting drunker and drunker.
At one point he's frustrated and trying to go home, he smells her perfume in his lift, meaning that they could be at the same location that night, he is hopeful again and decides it'd be worth taking the long way.
When he is passing by The Cornerstone, he sees someone identical/sister (or maybe not as he is very drunk at that point) outside on the phone with the middleman (drug dealer), perhaps this girl is a complete stranger or indeed her sister, she finds him attractive anyway and ends his quest.
it was always a favorite and made me think of my crush when i was 16.. Turner is underrated for his poetry in my opinion. I think a lot of music snobs sell them short because they were popular. Genius is popular once in a while ;) but also tracks like this have a it of extra poetry to them.
Agreed he’s a great songwriter and poet! I also love a song that reminds me of an old flame or friendship. Thanks for sharing your thoughts ✌🏻
cornerstone is a counselling service here in sheffield, where the arctic monkeys are from!
Like this deep dive into one song, keep them coming 👌
Domi Issartier Nice one bud! Thanks for all the support so far 😎✌🏻
Every day I listen to that song, I've really taken great care of it, it makes me cry too much, I'm sorry about the bad writing, I don't speak English
Great work and good video
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings on the song. Also thank you for the cool feedback!
i think she passed away...so hes searching for ways to bring her back, hes lonely and misses her deeply...
In the first time I listened to this song I got it was about I guy that was drunk and have met a girl who he has fell in love but he couldnt find her in the next day. So He has visited pubs around... thinking that any girls was her. But I guess it inst about it because there are some verses about " I saw your sis"... it doesn't make sense. So guess it's about a guy who is trying to overcome a relationship and try to see in other girls his Ex.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the song! Always good to hear everyone’s views on it 💯👍
I really think its just a guy trying to get over his ex but he sees she everywhere and in everyone (who never felt like that after a broken heart?)... he goes around and around in the bars kissing random girls but she cannot really forget her haha And then the sister, who probably had a crush on him since always and just accepted anything he said cuz she also wanted to hook up lol
I interpreted it as his ex died and whilst trying to deal with the loss and move on, he kept seeing people who reminded him of her. He asked them if he could call them her name to comfort himself and make him feel like she wasn’t gone but eventually the only person who would comfort him and make him feel like that was the ex’s sister because she needed someone to comfort her too. I don’t think he starts a relationship with his ex’s sister, I think they just comforted each other whilst dealing with the loss.
I’m not saying this is right but that’s just how I interpreted it
Nice explanation.. thanks for sharing Jake 👍💯
I've always been intrigued by "the middle man"
Is it her current lover that she doesn't really care for?
The psychedelic, cartoonist, and oddly specific lyrics paint a beautiful and detailed picture of the feeling of heart break and longing. That painful hyper awareness of not being able to escape a previous relationship is absolutely nailed in this track.
Great comment! Real food for thought there.. the middle man lyric is one that always gets me thinking ✌🏻💯
God, a perfect video for a perfect song
Thank you 😊
this is like my english class
Cheers.... I think! 😎
Really good interpretation. My fave part is the wrongness of it- is there any sin as bad as calling the wrong name out in the throes of passion?- but instead of the wrongness being corrected, the protagonist finds someone just as wrong as he is. That's subversive, kinky, and romantic af. Also, as a word nerd I love how every stanza ends with a new version of the question with all the pronouns flipped around according to who is talking to or about whom. This three minute song is a fucking novel.
Fantastic comment!
great interpretation
Cheers Victor ✌🏻
Nice analysis
Thank you ✌🏻
one of my fav songs from them haha
my fav music vid. iconic lol
Mine too 💯
I never once thought about a song from the perspective of the Sister, but now that you've mentioned it, someone really should write and perform a "Girl's Version" of the song.
Similar to what Jessica Rica did with Hey There Delilah.
Excellent 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you 😊

3 months later and I Just come back
I really like this video
5 months later and come back
Love this video and this song
Apparently, from what ive read, the “Cornerstone” is supposed to be a mental hospital of some sort, and the “middle man” is a pimp, so the sister is a prostitute. This interpretation doesnt make too much sense to me, and I like yours alot more! Sure wish we could get Alex’s input on the meaning. Sure would make listening to one of my all time favorites alot more interesting ❤ Good video!
It’s in her dna to love you
