- The story of rapist and convicted murderer Thabo Bester and his partner Dr Nadipha Magudumana continues to grab the nation's attention with many twists and turns. Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre on 3 May 2002 by faking his own death. A body was found inside his cell, initially believed to be Bester's but has now been identified as belonging to Katlego Bereng.
Investigative Journalist Karyn Maughan puts the story in perspective.

This story has so many questions than answers. From the time it started, I've never missed an episode. Am in Lusaka Zambia. More than anything else, the Bester story has exposed how most African countries are rotten to the core on corruption. Imagine Bester leaving South Africa into in and out of Zimbabwe, into and out of Zambia and finally into Tanzania without Using any document. Just how? A line up of people responsible along the trail must face hush punishment.

Am from Ndola Zambia 🇿🇲 and am equally alarmed by the level of negligence in African countries. I hope our African leaders especially those in the southern region use the Thabo Bester story to really re-strategize and improve our various security systems. If this case is not carefully handled,it will serve as a pioneer in heightened criminal activities here in the southern region .

A point of correction, the Besters didn't use the Zambia route so I guess you wrong there. They left South Africa from KZN probably into Mozambique where they got their tour guide whom they were caught with. So don't bring Zambia into that mess!

I've been on this tip for days. I still get shocked at how people support this father and the rest of her family's actions and behaviour even now.

Thank God Nandipha didn't succeed in cremating his body. Thank God that Thabo Bester's mother came forward to claim his body because if it was not for her nobody would have known about Katlego. Thank God that Thabo Bester's mother didn't allow Nandipha to go ahead with the cremation.
They deserve to be locked up and key thrown away.

Thank you so much for this interview. I agree with her in everything she said except for his in and out of prison since 2021. The police must do proper work there. In Nov 2021 he is alleged to have visited the certain family where he used to frequent when he was younger claiming he was out on parole driving a white Porsche. Instead of crushing that idea, the police need to fully explore the CCTV of Nov 2021. I don't know how because g4s claimed they rerecord after 7 days.

I needed a sober mind to listen to this factional journalist and I did muster a reasonable measure of sobriety and I consequently understood how nandipha's father features in this saga.Great non-factional journalism from ms maughn,she elucidated this story expertly, if only she wasn't used by capital to distort facts and discredit political figures that hold a different political opinion from her masters in capital, she would extremely ooz credibility and integrity. Dr Nandi isn’t only the mastermind but is also being protected for high government officials! Who allows and accused to appear in court without her face being shown ? Nowhere in South Africa have I seen something like this? What righty thinking judicial officer or police will allow it? Why is everybody so quiet 🤫 about it? Does dr Nandi hand stretch so far that she can make up her own laws?
And its not only that… its the fact that the other body thrown in the river which Nandipha claimed was her father had been discovered a week before Bester’s supposed escape, but they still didn’t arrest/apprehend Nandipha. And Katlego’s family reported him missing in the same police station and checked same mortuaries but to no avail.. sounds to me like Katlego’s body was hidden in plain sight
