The last time he was meta in any elo was 2017 - www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/nautilus/top/sr-ranked There is also a ROA naut top player in EUW grandmaster - Thóril So feel free to experiment with a more AP version too
He really was my favorite tank to play in the past. I'd very often buy a RoA (and sometimes an old liandrys where cc abilities made it do extra damage) then go full tank. He taught me some very important fundamentals with wave management due to his incredibly weak early game. Eventually Riot began to absolutely ruin his base damage because of his support dominance and his early game became weaker and weaker. Eventually, I just had to drop him.

I played two times vs naut top. Once on my main champ, Panth and once as trynda. As trynda, he stomped me. He gets randuins and it's gg. As panth? Ez lane.
Naut top isn't supposed to win lane, he is just a tank collecting free LP from lane "bullies" by neutralizing the lane and being 20 times more useful than them in teamfights.
Have u tried much AP nauti? It's gotta be the most polarizing champ in the game. If you get fed early you become literally unstoppable, best game I've had by far was AP, 21-1-10, but if you don't get fed you can't do a thing, so easy to go 0-10 or worse
I absolutely love Nautilus' design, someone starting League and going straight to Nautilus after seeing him in the role of a near unstoppable behemoth in that cinematic is something I resonate with lol

I’ve seen him surprise people with AP mid and I get that he’s tanky but he just can’t keep up with real top laners. And this is from someone who loves off meta and plays Evelynn mid/support/top so I’m not a meta slave

Imo powercrep is the wrong word for it as the champion has not changed really at all. It is simply that he was nerfed so much that he could no longer compete in top lane -> when new tank items were added he could then compete in meta where tank top laners can be picked (S12-13)
I've been playing this pick since his recent buffs in s13. Been enjoying it alot. My buildpath and strategy was different enough from this guys though that I bet implementing some of what I just learned will help me improve as well. Definitely playing him from a nostalgic perspective as I used to play naut top back in like s5
Didn't expect Nautilus to be that strong at top lane. That's why league is so awesome, the player base is always trying to find new strategies to climb, this one seems to work pretty well. It's funny to see a Nautilus killing Mordekaiser so many times xDDD.
Idk but if you get solokilled by Naut of all people as Mord you should legit uninstall. Even then most of those kills were from ganks so they don't count as much.

Around 2015 pro players started to play him as a support showing that he was way too strong and everyone started to play him in that role. I think the nerfs followed soon after and he really struggled in other roles. There was a point where they tried to get him back into the jg role, around the time that they were trying to turn other champs into jgs like darius and zed, but that didn't really work out.

I’m an absolute nautilus top fanatic. I love grasp, shield bash, conditioning or boneplating depending on the match up and revitalise. Secondary runes are presence of mine or the stacking atk buff run and last stand with ability haste, mr and armour. Your burst is insane if you stagger your auto attacks correctly (passive + grasp then w auto for shield bash proc and w on hit stacking) without any items and I personally like RoA, sunfire, demonic, force of nature or spirit visage depending how ap heavy they are, thornmail, randuins omen /frozen heart or deaths dance (the reason for this is because of the staggering damage, letting you tank more plus the bonus ad doesn’t inherently scale with your passive but it will let your overall auto attacks inbetween spells be more vicious, if you need an anti-ap alternative, wits end is also pretty good, free movement speed and ap on hit on top of your E slow is slow pretty mean, plus the attack speed is nice to proc more hits on your w). You can alternatively remove presence of mind for a better rune and use a tear instead of some funky last item for a seraphs embrace or Fimbulwinter to make the most out of RoA’s bonus mana depending on what your team needs the most. I have no experience in ranked, but it’s what I find effective even if I “lose lane” I’m still able to pick up kills and fix my kda quick after the RoA purchase. But I’d say give it a try, most of it is conditional on the matchup in the end so anything can go on nautilus, before the tank items and some item reworks, I managed to get an effective ad nautilus build with mythic sunfire, titanic, old steraks and deaths dance as the core items, usually buying another tank item and defensive boots depending on the match up, it was pretty fun to see people struggle quite hard against such a stupid pick but times have changed and I think I need some more time to cook and actually try ranked to get an effective, pure tank, ap tank hybrid and ad tank hybrid builds that are flexible in itemisation.
attack speed rune sounds kinda cool and interesting build! I'd love to try it if I didnt decide to quit leauge. In high elo I can get 2 items about every game. And if enemy team is strong, roa+sunfire is meh if they have an AP carry. I dont last long enough to do more than 2 rotations of spells so in the end im doing less damage most of the time. Abysal+sunfire is what i rush 9/10 games. and if they have no ap I might go tear + chain instead. or FH for mana. That and economy is a big deal so I like saving 300g on boots (that are faster) and even start ruby crystal + no pots to save 400g. (sometimes pots are needed in hell matchup) so 700g im up. I got biscuts for pots, and even diamond players get baited into dying when I have no mana. they fight and I pop biscut and then they gota die or blow a summoner. Also it's clutch for dives as well. And for the runes I use revitalize instead of unflinching + shield bash. Early game is so important and if i get behind I feel like im as weak as support naut. but getting ahead is HUGE since you dont need mythic until 3rd item. I go abysal + sunfire. It does as much as ROA imo vs squishies since they have only 30 mr and you take away 19 from those 2 items (scales with hp) So if they have 30 mr they have 23% reduction. abyal proc to 10% reduction. So its a 13% increase to damage for all sources of magic damage. That combined with even shroud(eveny will have 7% cuz hp bonus) is starting to add up considerably. I will say, since you are going AP, Id suggest learning how to hit a 3 wave riptide. The spacing is MAX AA range, micro step back E. If you land q auto , the step back is a little longer so might not be worth cause you might lose an autos worth of damage. didnt test it too much. anywho aweseome u finding your own builds, sounds dope af fr

I think my build will most likely be RoA sunfire, abyssal, demonic and gargoyles same runes and just be more a menace, I do wanna cook with some more tanky mythics such as jak’sho and gauntlet (sheen procs really hurt with the rune page I use) or even evenshroud. ever since the buff to tank supports ive been playing ali and naut top and naut top is so good with rod of ages. hp mana ap and it scales, catalyst is amazing on naut as it gives him the much needed mana and hp and the heal on ability use. dont sleep on this pick, if needed you can get baumi´s cinders before roa but getting roa asap is key to winning most lanes super easy as you can bully them under tower with auto W auto and e and just walk away taking a single towershot that gets blocked by your shield
Either way he buys 0 attack speed and has only his E to help with cs(which costs a lot) So compared to other champs that are forced to auto minions for cs - naut is one of the hardest.
As an old player it's suprisingly amazing to see a Naut top player out there still, what's surprising is that this is alot of how I remember old Naut Laning playing out I just never thought cookies could fix his mana problems alone I'm going to give this a shot it could be fun
I use a cheesier version of naut top: grasp rune page with shield bash and revitalize, secondary cheap shot and ingenious hunter. Core build: frostfire gauntlet, filmbulwinter, gargoyle stoneplate. Max w then E. This style has low wave clear but maximizes ur shields' value, ingenious hunter allows you to have the cooldowns of your 3 core items up more often, u are pretty much unkillable, and you gain higher dps from sheen procs, shield bash and cheap shot. Fun build

Been working on making naut top work for weeks before this was ever posted. I feel incredibly validated and proud knowing I did it "before it was cool" and even did it differently (although obviously not to the same success yet). Been playing full tank naut with comet, manaflow, focus or trascendence & scorch or gathering storm depending on matchup. The rest being resolve runes, and going exhaust because it counters both ignite and flash. Popular summoner spells for people who think they can kill you early
After fighting a twitch jg back in season 11 I felt like testing the weirdest things I could think of in jg, tried blitz jg but didnt like him since he couldnt farm, then I realized naut existed. Worked better than I ever expected, then proceeded to get m7 for him in jg instead of support lol
I recently started playing Rell mid and I’ve been having a blast. I was surprised at how similar my pick was with this Nautilus, even having similar runes and build paths. So this gave me even more confidence to start climbing with Rell mid !
I remember when he used to be played top and jungle. I still play him there from time to time but just not against ranged champs and Darius. Anyway, he can still stomp if the enemy doesn't know how to deal with him. He still deals surprising amounts of damage though when I tried this it was back when Sunfire was still a Mythic. Yeah, Naut top/jungle never truly died for me, just less favorable.
Interesting that he settled on the exact runes I use for Poppy top. I might have to give this a try. Feel like he might have learned from Makkro as well?
I feel like such a boomer watching this, Nautilus top was my main back in season 2 and part of season 3. Now there are people who don't even know that he used to be a very meta top laner.
sunfire getting out of mythics is big, big deal. Main issue was farming, you were almost forced to go mana items. back then, I liked Fimbul, now i think its trap.
In Wild Rift and according to the game descriptions, he is indeed a Supp, Top and Jungler, so he did prove everyone wrong. Nautilus can be used as a top 💕
Brodie I really hope u read this because SHACO TOP with TP and Smite is really it. In a meta where bot lane winning = winning the game its pretty good in the lower elos. With this play you distract the enemy jungler by taking her top camps, and if they ignore you, they lose all 3 camps. If they chase you thats less time for them to path bot. Genuinely I've been winning nonstop with this tactic because either the adc, jungler, or both end up out farming and leveling the enemy team.
I'm a blitz main just used naut for the first time I felt like his mana wasn't that bad considering I normally use 100 mana on a missed c4ank hook lmao 😂

I have been playing naut top for a while like 6 months on and off not maining it cause i suck as support and hate the 2v2 lane when playing as a tank and the lack of income so i played him top. the new items kinda suck at least compared to frostfire gauntlet for him. so i stopped playing it as much when it hit the new season and i got him too m7 a month or so before that. not the same now after playing it a bit this season but hearthsteels snowbally style works when it works and there's not much else to build that is as good as the old mythics at least in terms of synergy and i like being big so the size is cool. I go for a build that focuses on big shields so that you can do damage through shield bash and i mean actually a lot of damage. it's not uncommon for a 30 minute game for the rune too have done 8k damage.
love your new layout at the end with the runes/skills/items all in one place, but you are missing the adaptive runes :( would be nice to see what they get for early game.
Great concept with one major flaw. Jungler don’t gank Top, well most of the time. Feels like years since I saw either my or enemy jungler during lane phase.

The playerbase is awesome, but riot isn't. They love to confine a champion only to their role, specially supports :l

As an old player it's suprisingly amazing to see a Naut top player out there still, what's surprising is that this is alot of how I remember old Naut Laning playing out I just never thought cookies could fix his mana problems alone I'm going to give this a shot it could be fun
I use a cheesier version of naut top: grasp rune page with shield bash and revitalize, secondary cheap shot and ingenious hunter. Core build: frostfire gauntlet, filmbulwinter, gargoyle stoneplate. Max w then E. This style has low wave clear but maximizes ur shields' value, ingenious hunter allows you to have the cooldowns of your 3 core items up more often, u are pretty much unkillable, and you gain higher dps from sheen procs, shield bash and cheap shot. Fun build

Been working on making naut top work for weeks before this was ever posted. I feel incredibly validated and proud knowing I did it "before it was cool" and even did it differently (although obviously not to the same success yet). Been playing full tank naut with comet, manaflow, focus or trascendence & scorch or gathering storm depending on matchup. The rest being resolve runes, and going exhaust because it counters both ignite and flash. Popular summoner spells for people who think they can kill you early
After fighting a twitch jg back in season 11 I felt like testing the weirdest things I could think of in jg, tried blitz jg but didnt like him since he couldnt farm, then I realized naut existed. Worked better than I ever expected, then proceeded to get m7 for him in jg instead of support lol

I recently started playing Rell mid and I’ve been having a blast. I was surprised at how similar my pick was with this Nautilus, even having similar runes and build paths. So this gave me even more confidence to start climbing with Rell mid !

I remember when he used to be played top and jungle. I still play him there from time to time but just not against ranged champs and Darius. Anyway, he can still stomp if the enemy doesn't know how to deal with him. He still deals surprising amounts of damage though when I tried this it was back when Sunfire was still a Mythic.

I've played tank and ap nautilus top/mid since season 4. Reaching diamond pretty constantly the champions very fun and versatile would recommend :D

sunfire getting out of mythics is big, big deal. Main issue was farming, you were almost forced to go mana items. back then, I liked Fimbul, now i think its trap.

Brodie I really hope u read this because SHACO TOP with TP and Smite is really it. In a meta where bot lane winning = winning the game its pretty good in the lower elos. With this play you distract the enemy jungler by taking her top camps, and if they ignore you, they lose all 3 camps. If they chase you thats less time for them to path bot. Genuinely I've been winning nonstop with this tactic because either the adc, jungler, or both end up out farming and leveling the enemy team.
It also gives your jungler more room to set more bot ganks up easily.

Absorbing attention from 4 enemies may be more accurate

I have been playing naut top for a while like 6 months on and off not maining it cause i suck as support and hate the 2v2 lane when playing as a tank and the lack of income so i played him top. the new items kinda suck at least compared to frostfire gauntlet for him. so i stopped playing it as much when it hit the new season and i got him too m7 a month or so before that. not the same now after playing it a bit this season but hearthsteels snowbally style works when it works and there's not much else to build that is as good as the old mythics at least in terms of synergy and i like being big so the size is cool. I go for a build that focuses on big shields so that you can do damage through shield bash and i mean actually a lot of damage. it's not uncommon for a 30 minute game for the rune too have done 8k damage.
love your new layout at the end with the runes/skills/items all in one place, but you are missing the adaptive runes :( would be nice to see what they get for early game.

Great concept with one major flaw. Jungler don’t gank Top, well most of the time. Feels like years since I saw either my or enemy jungler during lane phase.
I played vs Nautilus top lane once. He healed all my damage constantly with divine + grasp. It was really annoying.
