Top 5 Best Themed SHMUPs on Switch

- Hello everyone, and welcome back!
A day later than anticipated but here's my Top 5 video covering the best themed SHMUPS on Switch!
I wanted to put this together (more on the way) because far too often people zero in on doing things like the Top 5 hardest SHMUPs or top 5 BEST Shmups, and that's great and all (I may even eventually do my own) but there's a hell of a lot more to explore beyond those!!!
Of course, this sort of thing is always a matter of opinion but in any event, enjoy the video and let me know what some of your personal favorite SHMUP themes are in the games you've played!

Also, Shikhondo has a strange movement bug (or at least what appears to be a bug) where your character will be stuck for a second or two - so keep that in mind when considering purchasing the Switch version.
And if you're getting Vasara, I'm not personally recommending the Vasara Collection unless that's the only thing you can get - there's noticeable lag and wonky movement at times compared to OG version.

Yep, that´s a known bug in Shikhondo, but it can be avoided by controlling the character with the digipad or playing with an arcadestick. It seems only to happen while using with analog controls...

Thanks for popping in Wabbly! Yeah, In the Hunt is easily one of my all-time favorite hori memory shooters. It's super demanding but ultimately incredible!
This was a brilliant idea for a video dude!! So many great mentions. How great is Jamestown+!!! Feel similarly about the music in Blackbird and of course my favorite themed Shmup, Fantasy Zone!! As soon as I see the ship and hear the tunes I got to some other place. I think In The Hunt is my favorite shmup with respect to graphics of all time- the art work is flawless, steeped in detail, and wondrous. Maybe two future videos could be Top 5 or 10 shmups for music and another one for art style. Either way, you crushed this one!!
Thanks so much Jeff! Jamestown+ will always rank super-high! It was honestly a tie between In the Hunt and JT+ but since JT+ even has theme perfectly set within things like the intro, cut-scenes, menues, etc I left it in the #1 spot. But seriously, In the Hunt is easily my favorite horizontal memory shooter in terms of visuals. Nothing else matches it!
Thanks for the ideas, I know that Bubblegum Crisis would also like to see one on best OSTs, so I'll certainly keep record of these suggestions!
Check Eschatos and Infinos Gaiden, you won't forget them.
I’ve wanted to play Infinos Gaiden for a couple of years now. Would be great if we got a Switch version at some point. I’ll eventually check out Eschatos, just not sure when. Thanks for popping by!

i really like Esp Ra De , i'd love to know more about those charactors, i also really enjoy Gunbirds charactors and art design.
Also, ALESTE which just makes me think of ROBOTECH.
Ohh and the intro on Pulstar is really special!!
I see a (narrow) theme in my tastes which are all very ANIME like.
Darius is super cool - love the theme and the Soundtracks on some of those games is straight amazing to my ears.

Always appreciate and enjoy waking up to your comments Crisis! I'm not familiar with Robotech but a huge anime fan here even though we don't watch too often these days. Pulstar is so good! It's been a while since I last jumped into that one Pulstar and Blazing Star - damn good shooters! That being said, I don't think I have many anime-ish STGs. Caladrius Blaze, Sisters Royale, and a few others are probably the closest ones. Darius has some truly whacky tunes but they're fantastic!
Gunbird 1 and 2 are amazing. Such a shame the Switch versions all have brutal lag because those are true gems in their art style and design.
I'll keep your best OST idea in mind for sure and maybe there's something I can do on the ESP ra.de. characters at some point as a micro-project amidst the other things we've got in the works. Great ideas and thanks again!

ha thanks for checking it out man! It was fun putting this together and experimenting with a different type of video in general. Eager to do more like this and have a boatload of ideas. There are loads of other games out there that could be covered in another way but these five truly shine!

If its about theme, G Darius would do for me. Space aquatic theme is awesome.
Sora and Suguri's theme of you are playing as the unrivaled protector of nature in a post apocalyptic setting is another one I like.

G Darius for sure! I looked up Cho Aniki and it is wild stuff but interesting.
Great channel! I'm also a fan of Shikhondo, especially the boss designs. Mushimesama, Progear & Deathsmiles are great examples of Cave doing themed games. Theme can be an important part of keeping you engaged through the grind.
Hey Jam! Appreciate you checking this out and dropping a comment. I checked your channel and you have some fantastic thumbnails and I'm eager to check out some videos in the morning! I love Mushihimesama, really trusting Futari hits Switch someday soon. I have Progear but haven't dedicated any serious time to it yet. I definitely agree though, theme can work wonders in that sense and even the way level design and creativity is delivered - which I want to cover in the near future with some game examples. shikhondo is so comfy! I still need to try it. Sexy parodius is a great hacha mecha fighter analogue of sorts.
and DAMN, in the hunt is so much cooler than creepier than I thought. God I love Irem. Gallop is like one of my favorite irem games to play. still kinda bullshit at times though (I'm looking at you, stage 4(?) boss. >.>
In the Hunt is over the top with its visuals and now that I know a work around for the Shikhondo but, I'll actually dedicate time for a 1cc or two. Haven't heard of Gallop but am eager to learn more! Thanks for checking this out!
@@Shmuptopia Gallop/cosmic cop is set in the r type universe, you fight bydo controlled machines and the stage scrolling speed is influenced by your horizontal position on screen :D

Hey dace there's this shoot em up on arcade which came to switch its weird as hell you shoot arcade machines and stuff could of swore you covered it
I wonder if you're referring to Cruisin Mix Special. I think I checked that one out last year or maybe the year before. I'm not sure.

Totally and that because some of the same artists who worked on In the Hunt went on to do art for Metal Slug, from what I've researched anyway. Glad you enjoyed the video! There will be other top5 videos since this only skims the tip of the iceberg.
