Jerry French dropped by North 40 Fly Shop to tie a couple of his favorite sculpin patterns. The steelhead sculpin is one of his favorite patterns to use when swinging for steelhead in Alaska. This pattern isnt a far departure from his trout sculpin, just a little larger and features brighter "stellhead" colors. The pattern is tied on a 25 mm shank with a trailing stinger hook. He also shares his unique technique for creating even and consistent dubbing loops. For more fly tying videos be sure to check out your local North 40 Fly Shop or North40flyshop.com.

Thank you for watching our video and reaching out to us! Unfortunately, we no longer have any composite loop cards, however, they are very easy to make! All you need to do is cut up a piece of card stock, which you can choose to laminate if you like. Jerry's fly uses an inch for each station, but you can make different cards for different flies and adjust the volume accordingly. It's a bit of trial and error at the beginning, but as Jerry says: "Once you figure out your proportions, you want to make sure your recipe is repeatable."

Would you go with these colors if you swung for Washington steel? From what I thought Alaska fish are less picky thus I’m a little lenient I won’t lie on the white/blue/pink for WA.

Yep, they work. So do dull and more natural colors. It’s good to change things up as water color changes.
