I love to imagine this "primal beast" effect to be the druid unlocking ancient wildshapes. Like, If they wildshape into a bear I'd describe it as a short-snouted bear instead of a meager brown bear. Or a utahraptor instead of a deinonychus (the raptor). This is the vibe that the phrase "primal beast" gives me the most.
One of my favorite things to do as a moon Druid is cast fire shield which is non concentration, cast investiture of wind, then wild shape into a water elemental so im a flying, fire coated water elemental that can snatch people and fly away with them.
How did your concentration checks hold up against damage in that context? (The air resistances help a lot, obviously, but the dragon can cause multiple checks via its multi-attack. Just curious.)

Bellow that point, she will fall into despair and reveal the Hag she derived into, using warlock spells, becoming more aggressive.
I’ve actually heard about this spell. After learning about Tenser’s Transformation, from watching Pumat Swole in CR Campaign 2, I looked various spells that offer similar effects. This was one of them! There’s also Tasha’s Otherworldly Guise, and Draconic Transformation, as well! I really like this one on Beast Master Rangers. Once they have access to the Share Spell feature, they have the option of taking this spell, allowing you and your companion to either go completely if you’re a Strength based ranger using the old Beast Master rules. However, I’d you’re using the Tasha’s variant? It’s even better! Using the Great Tree option, you have advantage on Dex and Wis based attacks, your Primal Companion’s attacks are based on your Wisdom score, so for me, I’d count it! A very fun and silly idea for me
I have an NPC Druid who uses this spell along with his werebear form (which I didn't plan for him to get, he was aiding the party in fighting enraged werebears when he got turned). He's a big boy with big claws.
Had another player in our party multi class as a Druid/Ranger/Fighter, he would use the other transformation to get advantage on all Dex attacks and go off from across the battlefield.
I actually have had this spell in mind for quite a while for a Wood Elf Circle of the Stars Druid that I eventually plan to play. Use the Great Tree option and Elven Accuracy to turn your Druid into a Martial class.
I used this spell a lot with my wildfire druid. I would take the tree form with gives advantage on wisdom-based attacks, and then I would fire off scorching rays to make 3 attacks at advantage all the time, doing extra damage with my enhanced bond. It was pretty nice
Guardian of Nature + Wild Shape + Longtooth Shifter sounds very fun. If you use a Polar Bear, that's three attacks at advantage, dealing 1d8+6d6+15 damage combined. Not bad for a level 7 druid.
Combos like this don't actually work in real D&D. You would gain far more damage by just transforming the first round and attacking. Unless you knew combat was coming and had time to prepare, in which case why are you wasting your concentration on Guardian of nature...
My genius friend played a Moon Druid Sorcerer and couldn’t make it to one session but in the previous one he had a ring of spell storing that he filled and gave to our tank. Even when he wasn’t there that ring saved our asses by turning our already metal warmongering badass and threw Wolverine into the mix and we faced down a small army together and won
I actually made a homebrew spell off of this. It's a 9th level spell called Guardian of the Moon that combines BOTH sides of it at the same time. Creating an "ultimate form" of sorts
The main problem here is the concentration. Getting hit and taking damage while Wild Shaped is still going to require you to make concentration saves, so if you’re wild shaped into a bear and gets swarmed then sooner rather than later the concentration save will fail.
Yeah, using a concentration spell and then immediately going into melee combat is a quick way to waste a 4th level spell slot 💀, you better be rocking War Caster and Resillient to cope with all of those concentration saving throws
Stars druid Archer form really kicks off if you enter the tree form of GoN. All your attack cantrips, guiding bolt and bonus archer attack are at advantage. Bonus points if your an elf with elven accuracy. Crit fishing range druid!! I call it the Garden Sparkler.🎉🎉
I recall this spell also works with Ranger, the other transformation on the spell (Tree Form) works to allow Ranger to have Advantage on all Dexterity and Wisdom based attacks, as well as earning 10 temporary hit points, acquiring advantage on Constitution Saving Throws (Great for keeping up the Concentration), and finally, you get to make 15 feet of terrain around you difficult terrain against enemies, which isn’t a lot but can be useful nonetheless.

I was throwing scorching rays al 2nd and 3rd level and every roll was with advantage, not only increasing my chances of hitting but also getting critical hits at least once every cast. Yep, my go to in our groups last campaign was guardian and cave bear. Also what is often forgetten with wildshape is proficiency modifiers. Also magic initiate and mage armor.
I remember creating a high level Ranger/Druid/Fighter Harengon who used Guardian of Nature, dual-wielded shortswords, and specialised in fighting hordes by attacking multiple times and targets, and having skills that made him more powerful and frenzied the more enemies there were surrounding him (such as deflecting their attacks into other enemies, attacking everything within range once as a single action, etc) He used the alternate form of Guardian of Nature, which is more tree-like (making a 15ft radius around you difficult terrain, getting advantage on all Dex and Wis based attack rolls, etc). It also meant that he turned into this really cute half-rabbit/half plant creature, with soft grassy fur and tiny flowers growing on the back of his ears ❤
A shifter, druid(moon), lycanthropic, guardian of nature is a fun combo. Quadruple shape. Thanks! Also if you have someone that can cast enlarge on you then you become a huge horrifying monster consisting of boar tusks with rat teeth, looks almost like a polar bear but not quite, always seeming to hit you with more force than you expect. With this combo you can hit 2 times with advantage for 2d6 with each hit. every melee hit deals an extra 1d6. with enlarge every hit deals and extra 1d4 on top of that. plus you still have a bonus action bite if you are a longtooth shifter for 1d6 which also gets the extra 1d6 and 1d4.If you really wanna have a fun time then be a wereraven. At start of your turn heal for 10 health if you weren't damaged by silver the past turn.
I got to be a high enough level ranger to use it and it's so great. 2h orc strength ranger, monster Slayer conclave. Tack on the mage slayer feat and I was a ridiculous anti caster character. Loved this spell, it saved me quite a bit a few times I was separated from the party.
One time I was playing a slightly modified homebrew circle of the moon druid and I got a magic artifact that gave me a 1d6 claw attack (it did get stronger through the campaign to I think a 1d12 iirc) but the fun part comes from the fact that it also stayed whenever I wild shaped and if that wild shape already had a claw attack it would instead add its damage to that claw attack To make it even stronger eventually I got another magic artifact that let me attack using my bonus action and another one that let me effectively use action surge twice I stayed a bear 90% of that campaign
So let me get this straight. You can be a Shifter, Moon Druid/Beast Totem Barbarian multi class, and Guardian of Nature?!?! (can Lycanthropy stack with Shifter?). GoN then use Wild Shape then Shift then use Rage.....😅 Did druid need their own Tenser's Transformation
I used this in the final fight against a dragon recently. I cast it while fighting close range, and the dragon kept using imposing presence which casts fear at the people near it. This ability also allows for advantage on wisdom rolls so i avoided being in a state of fear while biting and scratching at him for like 4 rounds.

"Zoe Lycan" is a werewolf Druid, and I remember casting that spell whenever I had to go serious mode. if we had the time I would also apply/pile up many other spells and buffs (but I think technical by the rules they go away as soon as you wildshape)
Speaking of double beast, this functions great with beastmaster rangers. However, beasts of the land/sea/sky are not immediately clear on if they’re using str, dex, or wis (or none) as their modifier for the sake of attack advantage
Been playing around with an Undead warlock/shifter/barbarian that is essentially 3 BA transformations. And 2 of them can be done before a combat. Honestly, it probably works best mechanically with fiend warlock so you could use fiendish vigor to get 8 temp HP before combat, get some every time you kill an enemy and then be able to beasthide shift in combat when you can to be able to regain temp hp again while increasing your AC.
Shifter Race + Guardian of Nature + Lycanthrope + Druid. Lotta bonus actions but damn, 3 turns in your are the beastlyest beast the beast kingdom has ever beasted.
How to add on to this with the spell absorb element which is a first level reaction spell which allows you to half the damage of any elemental attack on you and for your next melee attack you get an extra d6 but if you use it as a 3rd level spell you can get and extra 3d6 of any elemental damage type but it has to be the same as you were hit with and it is only limited by what kind of damage fellow casters can do on you so if all they need to do is use a low damaging elemental spell at any damage even if it’s below 3d6 damage the new boost is 7d6 + 1d8 + 10 and the only draw back is that you take a little damage.
This is actually the best spell for beast master rangers. You get a an ability that lets any spell that affects you also affect your companion, cast this on yourself and take the other form which gives you advantage on DEX based attacks, and let your companion take the beast form, and both of you are hitting at advantage
Forget the Nature Guardian polar bear. Become a Circle of the Moon druid & become an earth elemental. You're now a 10-foot-tall monster with 126 hit points, AC 17, immunity to poison, and you have advantage on all your attacks, which now deal an average of 17 damage each. Oh, and you have a Constitution of 20, which means no one is breaking your concentration now.
Just ran a Tanky Spores Druid that had this as a main part of their build. First turn activate spores and BA spread them in a 10ft cube next to me. 2nd turn BA Guardian of Nature (Tree) to turn the ground around into difficult terrain and gain advantage on wisdom based attack rolls, then just using my action from there to thorn whip at advantage any enemies I could into my AOE. Any time they'd try to run i'd Thorn whip them back, and with War Caster allowing Thorn Whip to be used as an opportunity attack, i could effectively keep a single enemy trapped in my AOE until it died!!
I think the issue with this spell and why it's "forgotten about" is because it's a 4th level spell, and unless you're a moon druid it's drastically underpowered for such a level, no other druid is really making melee attacks at 8th level, or is able to transform into something that will be able to stay up long enough to either make the con save when they get knocked around, so it's pretty niche is why I think it's overlooked a lot
Or you cast spike growth, then turn into an air elemental, pick up whoever you are fighting and drag them along the spikes, bonus if you took 1 lvl in rogue for the dash action so that you can do it again. My DM was very annoyed with me when I one shot the bad guy who was meant to be my final boss
I recently used this spell and proceeded to Wild Shape into an Earth Elemental, and then a buddy of mine hit me with Enlarge so we had a crazy Kaiju fight against a Fire Giant
wow! I didnt know about this but its seems like a pretty good use for a level 4 spell slot for a moon druid and its not even that overpowered really! Its a good prep up before transforming and doing some massive damage for at least a turn or two :D
Hear me out. Shifter druid/bear-totem barbarian dual class, take this spell; cast spell-wild shape-shapeshift-rage... the forbidden 4x transformation. It would take a couple rounds to get to your final form however.

I'm picturing the Incarnation ability that WoW druids have; which is a spell that turns you into an armored version of your shape-shifting forms.
Theres a warcraft dnd setting, some people took all the classes and races and put them in a 5e context, including a Death Knight class.

Playing a Druid healer, I've fallen in love with "Wither and Bloom." AOE damage combined with a little single-target healing is powerful

Take a little dip in warlock and take armor of agathys. Your are now a primordial polarbear covered in ice spikes

I often grab this spell with Magical Secrets when playing a Sword Bard. Great stuff!

How to add on to this with the spell absorb element which is a first level reaction spell which allows you to half the damage of any elemental attack on you and for your next melee attack you get an extra d6 but if you use it as a 3rd level spell you can get and extra 3d6 of any elemental damage type but it has to be the same as you were hit with and it is only limited by what kind of damage fellow casters can do on you so if all they need to do is use a low damaging elemental spell at any damage even if it’s below 3d6 damage the new boost is 7d6 + 1d8 + 10 and the only draw back is that you take a little damage.

The problem with the spell is that both guardian of nature and combat wild shape take a bonus action to work. It gets in the way of action economy.
This is actually the best spell for beast master rangers. You get a an ability that lets any spell that affects you also affect your companion, cast this on yourself and take the other form which gives you advantage on DEX based attacks, and let your companion take the beast form, and both of you are hitting at advantage
Bonus bonus bonus points if You're a shifter/lycan bloodhunter.

This would be a good class feature
Forget the Nature Guardian polar bear. Become a Circle of the Moon druid & become an earth elemental. You're now a 10-foot-tall monster with 126 hit points, AC 17, immunity to poison, and you have advantage on all your attacks, which now deal an average of 17 damage each. Oh, and you have a Constitution of 20, which means no one is breaking your concentration now.

Just ran a Tanky Spores Druid that had this as a main part of their build.
First turn activate spores and BA spread them in a 10ft cube next to me. 2nd turn BA Guardian of Nature (Tree) to turn the ground around into difficult terrain and gain advantage on wisdom based attack rolls, then just using my action from there to thorn whip at advantage any enemies I could into my AOE.
Any time they'd try to run i'd Thorn whip them back, and with War Caster allowing Thorn Whip to be used as an opportunity attack, i could effectively keep a single enemy trapped in my AOE until it died!!
I think the issue with this spell and why it's "forgotten about" is because it's a 4th level spell, and unless you're a moon druid it's drastically underpowered for such a level, no other druid is really making melee attacks at 8th level, or is able to transform into something that will be able to stay up long enough to either make the con save when they get knocked around, so it's pretty niche is why I think it's overlooked a lot
Or you cast spike growth, then turn into an air elemental, pick up whoever you are fighting and drag them along the spikes, bonus if you took 1 lvl in rogue for the dash action so that you can do it again. My DM was very annoyed with me when I one shot the bad guy who was meant to be my final boss
And you go into melee with concetration spell, you'll need warcaster and con save proficiency to use it more than a round
Moon Druid from level 10 can turn into elementals, two of which use Dexterity for attacks

I recently used this spell and proceeded to Wild Shape into an Earth Elemental, and then a buddy of mine hit me with Enlarge so we had a crazy Kaiju fight against a Fire Giant
wow! I didnt know about this but its seems like a pretty good use for a level 4 spell slot for a moon druid and its not even that overpowered really! Its a good prep up before transforming and doing some massive damage for at least a turn or two :D
as a dm id rule that new transformations completely overwrite old ones
Be a minotaur Druid with wildshape and Guardian and lycantrophy for the ultimate eldritch horror. Or basically become behemoth from FF

This a amazing ranger spell as well.
Hear me out. Shifter druid/bear-totem barbarian dual class, take this spell; cast spell-wild shape-shapeshift-rage... the forbidden 4x transformation. It would take a couple rounds to get to your final form however.
Throw in a few levels into Monk and that will be one devastating attack.
It would also be good for spore druid as their attacks already get an extra 1d6 necrotic

With a lvl 10 Moon Druid, you choose your Earth Elemental Form with this spell. You can be unstoppable!
