Mercedes ML270cdi (OM612) Grunting Hunting Idle Fixed (failed fuel rail pressure reg)

- Fuel Rail pressure regulator!, sticky and degraded.
I double checked my data and these run more like 25,000psi, not 60, but these systems still run at very high pressures so be very careful of working on them!, just like high voltage, they can seem harmless, but kill quickly!.
I got it working for now, idle is still not the best, you can hear that the PWM controlled valve is struggling to work. but with the new injectors and largely air free fuel system its so so much better!. almost like new!.
I will do a proper step-by-step when I get the new part. - Наука та технологія
Awesome! Glad to see it was such an easy fix. Great job on the troubleshooting!
really well diagnosed mate. Good to see another appreciator of the venerable .308 Winchester
I like the look of the clear lines
Glad you got it sorted. I need to service my little fiesta poor thing has not had a service in about 9k miles.
Ed, you are so good at this kind of video. Truly enjoy you!
Ray Remen By the way, is that a fucking bedroom table lamp at 12:04 at the very right top of the screen?
Ray Remen LOL, its a footwell lamp with a strange diffuser on it, the light bars you see are on the kickpanel.
Great that you found the issue, this car has some good value in it
Congrats, glad you got it working, if only fixing my car was that easy.
nice sounding merc :)
Thanks. This solved my idle problems and the engine response is much better. Also the hard gear changes in the lower gears are gone.
Glad you found the issue, thats exactly the kind of pressure related issue I was originally thinking. I've had to replace the same form of part on my Duramax, pretty all common rails have a PWM fuel pressure controlling part.
Nothing wrong with the Tygon line, thats what I use on my returns for the injectors.
mytmousemalibu ah yeh Tygon is the name I was looking for, expensive stuff but it works a treat!, might just get a full run from filter to pump and replace the spliced one and leave it be.
best thing about the clear is even the spill lines show air bubbles if there is a leak at the HP pump, so far its air tight now :D
Aussie50 I always have some on hand at all times. Good stuff and pretty resistant. I know its gasoline & diesel rated but I normally kept some for my small 2-stroke yard tools but one day, my Mercedes started stinking like fuel and the injector return lines had started splitting and leaking. The original hoses are some kind of neoprene I think with a fabric mesh on the outside. Its expensive and really doesn't last very long. I tried Tygon and it fits very well and seals good and so far has lasted a while but the nice part is I just buy a full spool of the stuff so is cheap compared to the original hose for the same length. The OM606 conversion I am doing to my car now will be getting rid of the factory rigid plastic fuel lines with the snap couplers, they are known for leaks and drawing air so I will be using aerospace AN fittings and hose as much as possible!
Don't you just love bosch fuel systems :) I have similar system in my Chevy Duramax's, glad you found the problem !
Common rail .. was reinvented by FIAT Marelli .. sold off to Bosch
Percussive maintenance fixes everything!
Yeah I had a pressure issue once with my VW, changed the internal tank pump, filter but it was the little pressure regulator. (vaccum powered)
The oil filler cap is right next to the regulator and if oil gets in the seals are toast. Now I know to put a cloth over that when changing oil.
Good deal on the FCA/FPV/whatever it's called on your rig!
The IAT being off is only going to affect the timing and possibly boost pressure.
It won't hurt the engine.
engine looks nice.
Alyse was happily thumping away in the background, get that Regulator as quick as you can Ed!
Hi, What Brand and Part number of the Italian Injectors you purchased?
Hi Does the onboard fuel usage readout tell you the correct L/100 with new injectors? My 200k injectors make the computer say I'm getting 6 L/100 kms but the bowser tells me 9 or 10 L/100?
Sounds a similar issue to my old bus. Just bought it and half way home white smoke and knocking. Changed regulator, pressure sensor, checked injectors still knocks - any ideas?
good news. I wouldn't have thought of that.
Just out of interest, is there any use bunging some diesel cleaner in the fuel tank and then give it some serious hooning about ?
I am due to put some in my diesels tank (72,000 miles covered)
for the 'intake air' getting the weird readings, it simply means its not getting any data from a/the sensor, it just displays whatever value it has or some random memory value.
Enthusiast/gaming/server motherboards and similar modular hardware monitor devices (ie; thermal diodes are optional via headers to plug them into) you can see this a lot. Actual value range depends on the particular hardware or software in use.
Paul Hancock yeah this one seems to be okay, but only getting .8V, so somthing upstream is amiss
I have a 2003 ML 270
It has a few issues. One was hunting and stalling. Changed FPR and it didn't help.
I was wondering where you get your technical info on it. Manuals and stuff.
It's started losing power a lot recently and the vacuum system seems out of wack with a heavy brake pedal for a bit before it starts to bight.
I haven't found a manual.
Please help.
I have 0087. Falt benz.
What it is. Power reduction
we miss you Aussie50. Sleep well ml270 hero
wowser that tablet in the dashboard is fun.
Hi mate,
Did you have any ticking issues driving? Only while accelerating in drive
Wrap a piece of extra tubing around the feeder line where it rubs on the intercooler to keep in from making a mess.
I remember seeing a similar fix of an oil control valve on a 4cyl gas engine. For some reason, it was causing hesitation past half throttle. But just shorting it across the battery and putting it back in made the car run like new. idk what the hell an oil control valve would have to do with performance other than pissing off the computer.
What is that fancy radio you got?
how do you manage to bleed the high pressure from the injector rail ?
long grips and crack open one of the injectors ?
BillyNoMates1974 14mm spanner and loads of rags and sheet metal wadding around the line from the HP pump where it meets the rail.
So did you change the new solenoid? I have same problem and general handling of solenoid with new o-rings helped a lot but still not 100% stable....just wondering if you swapped new part and did it solve the issue permanently?
I have not changed it, its still behaving itself tho, the clean and percussive maintenance has made it a lot happier, but if the hunting comes back I will buy a new one.
366,500KM? Thats running nice and looks nice for the distance its gone. Didnt get quite as lucky with my car which is 434,000KM old, it was rusted out and the transmission actually fell out half way, it was hard to fix all that, but despite that the engine ran perfectly and I bet it might do another 100,000. Id say the Mercedes might last forever with the maintenance you do with it.
Does it start quicker now too? Before it was cranking for a while before firing (waiting for rail pressure to build I guess)
xenolard yeh definitly, the valve is still a bit sad but it is running nicer now.
Dat turbo ;-)
alex993cc1 ikr, beautiful...
Certainly seems to be running heaps better now.
bloody modern cars lol, good fix!
The pressure the fuel system is at can be used like a Hypospray like they use in Star Trek (there is also a real-life equivalent too), only you really don't want a hypo of diesel being blasted into you... :P
Pretty pricey part that, for something that's just a solenoid, but, that's Merc prices I guess... :S
At least you found the source of the issues, most people probably would have scrapped a car like that for such simple problems cos they're too lazy to fix it or have it fixed... :P
That deck looks cool!!! Who makes it?
***** its one of these www.ebay.com.au/itm/Android-4-4-Double-2-Din-Car-DVD-Player-Radio-Stereo-Head-Unit-GPS-SATNAV-RDS-3G-/281371110462?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item4183066c3e
Standard Chinese tablet-in dash jobbie with DVD video and a load of aux outs, nav etc.
could you post a video on what the inside of the rail looks like? and nice temporary fix
Josh Kilen will do when I get the new valve and do a proper step by step,
Aussie50
ok i have always wondered what inside of a common rail looks like
I have the same problem on my sprinter , its the same engine . I replaced the seals on the regulator and it was fine but now its running bad again. Did you have to replace the regulator after all ?
+arthur z Mine has been behaving itself for the most part, but I have not put more than a few hundred KM on it since, I rarely drive the car. right now its leaking from the FP reg seal and leaving fuel on the ground, it has to be replace to fix the problem entirely.
I bought the 3 seal kit for $12 form a local MB dealer , it fixed the problem but it came back, so i ordered the entire regulator .
+arthur z yeh the actual needle and seat become eroded and gunked up/sticky and do not respond to the ECU's signal when its supposed to.
Whats the head unit in this again? I know you've said it before but I can't remember what video it was.
PoLoMoTo2534 its a standard Chinese Android 4.4 unit, can't remember the exact name
Thanks!
You bought the Merc for a challenge right?
KiwiPowerNZ yep, so far so good. now to tackle the ABS light thing
Hi Aussie50 , how did you fix the ABS light problem??
Is that a flight recorder in your passenger's footwell?
Caleb Gregory two of them, aircraft black-box recorders, yea. No idea why he has them though... o_O
maybe the reg is sticking from the lack of lube in our fuel.......run some Moreys in her tank .....every tank fill wont hurt
I could have told you the fault Ed, but only after watching your vid :)
Too many picky things to go wrong on modern engines :-(
Ed can you please do more computer videos I find them really good
wubman gaming ed makes his videos on what he is doing and his interests.
Cars
hifi
guns
computers
electronics
mechanical equipment etc...
go back and watch his older videos with computers. awhile back he made heaps of computer vids. ed has all his computers sorted out, his new ones anyway. so it could be months before new computer vids. you cant expect somebody to make videos just for you.
yeh dude i have watched all his videos and i pefer him over other utubers any way i will just be patient we cant force people to do what we like
wubman gaming i am sure we will see more computer vids sooner or later
smallenginedude71 yeh hopefully
just buy a new part
GET rid of this money hungry beast
running on 5 ? its a 6 cilinder mate
ljmike1204 nope Mercedes is famous for the oddball 5 cylinder diesels :) very strange but they last forever
lol :P it stil sounded like a 6
ljmike1204 right very strange xD id rather have 6 cylinders
