  • Bucyrus-Erie's 60-S swing shovel, introduced in 1970, was designed as a cross between a crawler loader and a hydraulic shovel with the hopes that it would integrate both the high mobility of a loader and the high breakout force of the shovel. This video was was compiled, narrated and produced by Keith Haddock for the Historical Construction Equipment Association.

The modern mining hydraulic front shovels have a wide bucket design like on this Bucyrus Erie 60-S shovel, but the modern front shovels have a hydraulic clam bucket, which the 60-S didn't have. But the basic boom, stick, & shovel design (& operation) of the 60-S appears to have been somewhat ahead of its time, & also would appear to have much influenced the design of the modern hydraulic front shovels.

I don't know why people wanted the wheel loaders more then a swing shovel

Mobility. Depending on the blending, needs to move to another bank wheel loaders are faster.

And for cleanup after a shot. Rubber tires are cheaper, faster, and last longer. Even hydraulic shovels have rubber tire dozens for cleannup
