When you built the bunker, it crossed my mind that you were going to want a second one sometime soon. Your current bunker holds quite a bit of wood - but from a seasoning standpoint, being able to keep the older wood in 1 place and newer in another would be beneficial. Hopefully with the cold weather you will be able to get more of the logs from the neighbor's for firewood and lumber. It is wonderful on Eva's recovery.

Hey Mike, such a good video today! I know it's quicker and more productive to have logs at the splitter, but I just love watching you fell a tree, cleaning up fallen trees and limbs, i.e taking care of your land! There's literally very few places close to my house that is wooded and not posted. Being out in the woods w you is next best thing! And your happiness spreads to all of us, just as concern for Eva and Hunter, anger at numbnuts hating on you, amazement w your projects and joy at events and just being w your family! Gosh, I could just keep on going there - one video that I've brought up probably 15 times to show my family and friends is that video of Levi and Hunter walking the trails. Hunter knows them well, he was staying way up front, laughing loudly, leading Levi to his house, which Levi was not planning on doing, walked in for Kate to fix him a Coke and a sandwich! My heart swelled twice its size hearing Hunter leading his little brother through the woods laughing out loud! Such great times w the Morgans! I hope Eva will someday start her UA-cam channel, I'm definitely up for that! I wrote down Hannah and Tyler's channel but haven't watched yet. I apologize for such long comments but I get started and can't stop bragging on my favorite family! Always such great videos, always a pleasure! Thanks Mike for this happy, happy video, looking forward to tomorrow's video!👍🚜❤🙏Eva🙏

Glad your family is doing well and so are you. Wood detail was the most favorite thing my husband (who died in 2000) did together. He has a saw and log splitter he built himself. He would run the wood through splitter, then the saw. I would take the wood off of the saw table an through it in the loader or dump truck. Fond memories of working together. Then we wold bring our wood home, through it in the wood stove and enjoy the warm of the fire and each other. Honest work.

Mike I have a suggestion for you. After calculating what a Kubota bucket full of wood is to a cord (how many buckets in a cord) give customers the option to pull their own trailer in and you sell them that wood in its present condition, "X" dollars per bucket. Of course you would let them know it isn't dry and caution them on what wet wood does to wood burners, etc. Let them dry it or burn it in their fire pits if they choose and then you eliminate the need for additional baskets and that additional labor, travel time and recovery trip, etc.

I don't know about in your neck of the woods, but here in the PacificNorthwest our firewood usage has gone up because we're home more. Our house is on a slab with radiant floor heat that we use for keeping the house about 60-65. To bring it up to more comfortable temps, we build a fire in the stove. When we were both gone all day at work, 5 days a week, we burned about a cord and half of mixed cedar, alder & madrone. Last winter we went through a bit more than 3 cords and we're on pace for 4 cords this winter. It's all because we're home more. We could use the radiant floor heat some more, but wood off my property is a heckuva lot cheaper than propane these days!

  • @timd32

Glad your family is healing up always challenging going thru stuff like you have.
On the firewood deal, while it does not really seem like a super cold season so far, the low temps have been at or below the avg for your area (Cranberry Twp). Pretty early on in the season, Nov looks to have had 21 days where the low was at or below the average. Dec had 11 days and Jan 11 days so far, last year Jan had 8 total for the month. Just a guess or adds to the overall picture.
Fuel prices are also close to 50% higher this season then last for Propane, Oil, and NG. EIA . Gov tracks those numbers. JAN Propane for example is $2.70 avg vs $1.90 last season, which actually is only 40% higher but Dec and Nov were in the +47-48% range.
If your sole source has been wood I'm sure those folks are set up with stock piles and high efficiency rigs that get long burns with dry wood. But I think folks who are having a rough go and are out probably had no plans of using so much to offset costs, add to that their set up is likely less efficient then the hard core folks.
Our son really enjoys watching the channel with me, all the machines and saw work going on. Stay safe out there.

Yep, I understand. Being back in my woods makes me feel good. Do some clearing of dead trees, some cutting, some splitting and have a fire going. It's a good feeling. Some days I go back there and do nothing. Walk around some, think about what I'm going to do next, maybe start a fire. For me, very relaxing. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Mike. Cold one here too. We woke up to -6 this morning. I think people are out of firewood because everyone burnt so much last year. We burned more than we had available since we were working/schooling from home. That allowed me to keep the fire going all day, every day. We depleted our normal winter stockpile in pretty short order. Typically, we have enough just from doing like you - cutting the blowdowns on our property. I actually had to buy firewood from some other people last year. I've never bought firewood before last year.

If you have customers who want to buy 'green' firewood, I see no problem selling it to them as long as you make it abundantly clear how green the wood is and what that means. If it were me, I would give every new customer a brochure explaining moisture content, wood species btu content (particularly hard vs soft). I'd split the wood directly into your dump trailer and sell by the trailer load. On the bill, give the customer a few moisture readings from their load. There is no problem with the customer stacking and drying their own wood.

Im another one that didnt get prepared for this winter. Most of the wood that i cut this past summer was red and white oak. I have very little ash and cherry that is ready to burn now. We decided to not burn at all this winter and just hit it hard in preparation for next winter. We are going to try to get 2 winters worth of wood cut and split before next winter. That will give us good seasoned wood every winter from then on. So glad to hear Eva is still recovering quickly. Stay well, stay safe and yall HAVE A DAY

Glad to hear Eve doing good. We keep praying for her. I am out of wood to sale because I have so many fire pit customers. I sell both green and seasoned wood. I have a very regular clientele for green wood which start ordering at first of year for next yr. One usually orders 5 cord first of January every yr. Another will order 3 to 4 in February. It will be harder this yr because the tree service that I got logs from sold out. So I am having to look for wood to cut.

I'm out of wood because I slacked last year when oil was so cheap. I will never do that again. Got burned from a local guy who told me he had 2 year seasoned hardwood for sale. The wood I split in October is dryer than what he dropped off. From now on, I will always have the wood pile full. And never take delivery of wood without checking moisture content. Don't take peoples word for it. I have another cord of kiln dried coming next week. $450

I think that you use athletic greens as a fortified breakfast and this is also why you get happier as it settles into the body. Anything that can keep the stomach happy. I do know the road that you mentioned would be easier to travel from point a to point b. You are then making it like your turnpike highway system which is what you don't have or need as its a trail, not a highway. If it came to safety then yes.... build it, but to just make quicker .. NO. Keep some things as they were. Have you ever thought about taking like "around five acres" and setting it up with a splitter, some bins or pallets, a small tractor, and some odds and ends tools for a spot that Levi could set up like you have for cutting on his own? Let him see what its really like to own a business an get customers, delivery system, and other just to see what is involved. You have a lot of things to be grateful for as to where you and mrs.M. were when starting in life. I hope this lasts the time for all future generations of Morgan's ... I best stop here as I always talk too much repeating myself over

Same here in East TN. Not as many people cutting it for extra money like there used to be. Larger farms have been cut up and sold and there’s less logging going on it seems. We have a lot of wood but sell when the timing is right. It’s not our fault that people are miserably unprepared and wait until the last minute to buy wood.

They just hold your fire at night better . What you are splitting is for backyard fires great for that but to heat a house a little bigger is better.we did firewood for years sold a ton truck load stack everyday for years . Just a little advice but you seem to know what you're doing .Enjoy watching your videos.

I have a cord or so I’ve been seasoning for about a year because I found last year wood was being sold at 60+ moisture and clearly that’s unacceptable.. mine still isn’t ready bc it’s mostly oak.. I’ve wanted to start a side business for firewood to supply quality wood locally but it’s just not something I can make money with without the logs and a splitter doing it by hand I’d be making almost no money per hours of labor… I live in the south so only 3-4 months you can burn but still I love fire wood and wanted to create a premium seasoned wood and idk if I can without investing in a splitter and a log company to drop it off

Hey Mike, just another one of my annual comments. Glad to hear Eva is doing well and am happy to see your success continuing.
We didn't sell a whole lot of firewood this year and it wasn't for the lack of trying. Usually we get a big rush in November or so because people didn't think about it until that first cold night but that day never came this year and it wasn't for a lack of trying. I think a lot of people are hard up on money with the cost of everything going through the roof so they are buying as little at a time as possible.
Anyway, thanks for the amazing content. God bless you and your family, I wish you nothing but the best.
edit: how is the 500i treating you? I'm considering getting one which would be my first Stihl in a long time (besides the bossmans mTronics I wont touch with a 10' pole).

I think the reason no one has wood is the fact there are people like you that will do the work for other people, and they will pay for the service. Not bad for a retired person. Glad to hear your daughter is doing so much better - she is a trooper. Stay safe and have a day.

I just closed on 40 ac of woods this fall, about an hour and half south of Cleveland. It was logged a few years back by previous owner. I could cut for probably 5 years and not run out of firewood lol. however I am terrible at identify types of trees. I grew up in the woods all my life hunting but never been any good at learning tree species in detail. I wanna make some money of the wood that is literally laying around. Any suggestions on how to learn tree species, or maybe a good guide or book on them. I am currently looking for a book or something but most focus on leaves and other things that are not present once the tree is dead and on the ground from logging.

When you do what you love you'll never work a day in your life. I've always done music because that's what I was put here to do. At 77, I've certainly had ups and downs as we all do, but in general I've had a happy life because of doing what I love for a living. You are getting more and more organized in what you love to do. I can just imagine a burden is being lifted as Eva gets better as well. I too love the crackle of that log splitting. That's why I love your channel. We get to live vicariously thru you and Melissa. Carry on my friend!

Hi Guys, hope you're all well. Mike, you need to build something like a square corral, with two gates opposite each other. You could drive your totes in one gate to stack against the opposite gate, and then when you're ready to sell them, open the other gate and pull them out. It would be the first ones in are the first one's out. Just an idea, stay safe.

The way to test tractor stability is to stand in front of it and try to rock the tractor by hand with the FEL.
The tractor manual suggests you need over a 1,000 pounds of ballast in the rear.
I assume you have RimGuard/oil in rear wheels. Can add wheel weights. Then a ballast box or ballast rack.
And finally, Bora wheel spacers make a big difference, too.
    Cheers

I seem to be burning a lot more wood this year. I'll be lucky if the remainder lasts another month. Gonna need a bigger woodshed. More time at home, increasing energy costs, inflation in general may be adding to the demand for wood for home heating.

As noted in a prior post, You could have stacked some of the mill's 10 ft. bark edged cut-offs vertically around the rear of the bunker and doubled the storage volume. As is now, you may still be out of firewood next fall, so keep cutting!
We're still waiting here in Southern Wisconsin for enough snow to open the snowmobile trails. Maybe Sunday! Most of the storm went South of us.

I was gonna say...the price of heating oil might have something to do with the increased calls. Casual burners might be relying on wood for more of their heating needs. And yes, folks were home a bit more this summer, maybe a few more burn pit fires. The central PA heating season wasn't bad till recently but I did start burning pellets pretty early this season. I've used a bit more than normal on an average year.

So glad to hear daughter Eva’s doing better! Have you seen the splitters that you feed a whole long log and it cuts it into rounds and feeds it into the splitter, all you have to do is adjust the cutter height, you never touch it once its in the machine. If you ran one of those along with your present set up you could double your production!

Two reasons. The first is the obvious, it's a cold winter. Second many people are working from home thus using more fuel. Here in SW France we have had zero or sub zero since early November with one or two warmer days but it's cold and we are getting through the wood. Luckily I got more in last October than normal.

I have a couple friends that tell me they have been burning firewood and now resorted to burning green firewood due to them unable to afford propane prices. glad all is well and it definitely shows, that’s awesome! you were getting slick with the excavator and i’m glad you actually figured out that it is probably the best piece of equipment for firewood production, i’ve commented to all the other firewood channel guys and they don’t get it, they think the tractor is the ticket, but then again they split and stack their firewood ( waste of time), and now they’re out, you probably have a lot of those guys out your way and that’s why you’re getting calls. can’t wait to see the splitfire in action and don’t edit out the part of yourself beating a stuck round off of it, hopefully i’m wrong, but that thin wedge looks like a problem, actually the whole design does, ive watched their demo video but they don’t really show it in production, just cut up clips, i know you’ll give it a good test…great video as always!
