When you mentioned the style of the buildings reminds you of many of the buildings in Hawaii. Remember, thousands of Okinawans emigrated to Hawaii in the early 1900's. They built businesses like Zippy's and Rainbow drive-in. Even the current Hawaii governor has roots in Okinawa. So there is a strong connection between Hawaii and Okinawa.
Both houses that we lived in in Okinawa were completely concrete. Most buildings are. Every summer there were at least several typhoons that hit, but we felt very safe. Hurricanes won't knock over a concrete house. I wish it was like that here in Hawaii. I feel like my wood house could be torn apart in a hurricane. So happy to see Okinawa again! Keep safe, and please get some rest and relaxation. Looking forward to more videos! 🤗😄🌺🌴
I love Okinawa. Please take care of yourself and see your dr about your depression! I too love the unique architecture of Okinawa and I enjoy your videos so much!
As a kid, I spent a lot of summers in Okinawa. I was told that the bunker-like buildings were designed to withstand typhoons. I’ve not been back to Okinawa since 1989 and a lot has changed. Thank you for taking me down memory lane.
I lived on Oki for 5 yrs in the 90's, and currently living here, a lot has changed, and I think you are correct, I also heard that the architecture was designed with typhoons in mind as historically Okinawa and the surrounding islands usually get hit a lot worse by them than cities in the mainland. Back around 1990 we had a very large typhoon that did a lot of damage here, but since then it seems like most of the island has been built to better withstand the large storms, or in some cases, some of the ancient homes or bldgs are just well protected by surrounding bldgs or geography. About 4 years ago we had a couple large typhoons that hit in the same week and did a lot of damage, and caused wide spread power outages on the island, and our niece's car was totaled by a kei car that was blown into her car. There are some typhoon videos on youtube that show how the kei cars become projectiles during the storms.
I notice when my daughter tries to control her anxiety it tires her a lot/exhausted …crowds and situations add to it. Everyone is different but be kind to yourself and make sure you eat well (leafy greens added to your meals, lots of water and rest when you can ) I love that you know and you also have Satoshj to prompt you when meds are a good option vs just being in the same slump. I’ve been caring for my daughter a long time and there is no sure fire cure…just patience, love and compassion towards yourself and others who love you .
Interesting! Those poured concrete forms used to be really popular in the 50s and 60s. Particularly in hot climates. Our home in Okinawa had some of those decorative elements. Make it look nicer than just a stack of cinder blocks. Concrete homes stay a lot cooler too. Our house in New Mexico was also concrete construction. There was a breezeway in front of the house that was that kind of lacey decorative concrete sheltering the front door area from the sun and wind. It looked so cool. Vivid childhood memories. I like the look of those buildings.
There is so much modern architecture in this section of Okinawa. This is compatible for non occupied with free time. You may find something to interact with at each corner.
I think the link between Okinawa and Hawaii is that they’re tropic cities. I recognize some of what you trying to say about the style of the houses to houses on Cuba, the only tropic country I’ve been to. The apartment houses in Cuba also looked concrete’y and chunky.
@Shinichi's World maybe okinawa is like that (concrete and flowers even the layout) because the weather, and location, is similar to Hawaii that is subtropical and it had been a territory of US before
I have a Hispanic friend who lives in Okinawa and when he joined the army, he was stationed there. Must be nice in Okinawa I saw Shia cute Shiba dog :D
This was gorgeous, l loved the architecture in Naha city and the flowers in bloom so pretty. I hope you went back to the hotel the heat was to intense . Thanks so much Shinichi World 🌎 I always enjoy these excellent video. 😊
I really enjoy the intimacy of this channel. You are so personal and honest. I really admire that. The walks off-the -beaten-path are so interesting and the addition of current news and events make it so unique. I'm glad to see life coming back to Okinawa. I'm currently in school and unable to travel abroad. Watching your videos is a brief cure for my wanderlust. The last time I was in Okinawa I was really taken by how much Chinese influence there is in the culture from food to architecture. Also, much of the architecture reminds me of other tropical places like Hawaii, the Caribbean and Mexico where many of the buildings I saw were made of concrete, with balconies and plenty of outdoor spaces. Their designs seem to allow for good air flow in the hot weather. I don't think Okinawa experiences earthquakes as seen on the more northern prefectures, but Okinawa sees more tropical storms for which the concrete buildings are made to withstand. I think. Anyway, thank you as always for the wonderful video. I hope to be able to support the channels in the near future. Keep up the amazing work!
Shinichi-san, the hot summer here in the mainland US is harming my mental health too. People talk about Seasonal Affective Disorder as a winter problem, but I think extreme heat gets me down much worse than cold and short days. You are definitely not alone. 無理せずにゆっくりしていってください!
As you commented, there are many differences between the reinforced concrete buildings in Okinawa and mainland Japan. In Okinawa, the buildings will be not so tall and frequently the first floor is reserved for parking or maybe even small stores while the homes and apartments will be second floor on up. Okinawa tends to have either faded paint (maybe totally grey and worn) or colorful paint if it is newer. If you get away from the tourist places you will find even more clear examples of the concrete buildings that came with the American occupation. Also, more air conditioners in Okinawa, naturally. And Okinawan homes tend to have better air flow layouts compared to mainland Japan.
Hi Shinichi, Thank you the nice walk. That is interesting that Okinawa is not big on green tea. Please stay hydrated and try to get depressed. It kind of a let down after come home from a trip. I used to feel like that after would visit aunty in Washington. Take care.
Aloha 🌺 Thank you! Loved the walk, always amazed your lack of sunglasses. Since I was teenager can't go anywhere without one. So nice to see hibiscus! Aloha 🌺
something i was told about Okinawa is that there is a lot of American influence on there culture they wouldn't admit but the amount of supplies and wealth the US military drought to the island suitably influenced them the buildings really look like something from Hawaii or Miami
Mahalo for another really good video. That's very interesting that the vending machines hardly has any green tea. Back in 2006, Okinawa is where I was first exposed to the cold green tea in vending machines. They had all the different brands, too. I thought the best one was from Coca Cola, strangely enough. They still had a lot of different brands of green tea in the vending machines in 2016, too. I wonder why that is no longer the case? Too bad you couldn't do a collaboration with Kit from RiceKrispyTreats or on her and her husband's Live in Okinawa Group. John E. Sholine also does walking tours of Okinawa. That would be another great collab.
I like these buildings in Okinawa. I also find them uniquely modern and I hope some of them are listed. However, I didn’t find any “tropical mid-century modern” or brutalist architecture tours when I was on the island. I think there’s a demand for those. I’d certainly like to join!
I lived in Okinawa for many years and went to mainland Japan many times. Yes the buildings are much sturdier than those in the mainland. I went through many typhoons in Okinawa and some winds were as high as 130 MPH. There was minimal damage to buildings.
Since you mentioned it...totally unscientific opinion. The concrete withstands typhoons. Not sure of the earthquake rate but it seems from some quick research the earthquakes seems to be deep and offshore as opposed to main islands of Japan. Maybe someone more informed can share local knowledge.
I think you do not see the raw concrete brutalist style of buildings in Tokyo, you see concrete buildings that are finish’s and have a different architectural style as Honshu is more prone to earthquakes whereas Okinawa is probably more susceptible to open ocean storms. There are areas throughout Asia and southeast Asia that have more brutalist architecture.
Left okinawa 50 years ago. So many new buildings and modern life has improved so much

He knows.
Please subscribe to OkinaWanderer channel. He needs to get another 183 subscribers to Live stream. Thanks everybody.

I find this vlog very informative! Thanks for doing this walking kind of tour!
The building style reminds me of the ones along Florida's coastlines. Even being hot, it looked like a beautiful day. Tnank you for sharing!
Hope you start to feel better with the whole weather change and thank you for the great video!

Thank you for this video. I sure do miss Okinawa. Lived there 1991-1994. Still miss it. 🙂

mid century modern i love it the old vibes from the old vibrant world
I love this video!
I have been to Naha several times. It is so beautiful.

Beautiful sky and very exotic views of streets compared with other parts of Japan
I have a Hispanic friend who lives in Okinawa and when he joined the army, he was stationed there.
Must be nice in Okinawa I saw Shia cute Shiba dog :D
私は米海兵隊員として、11 年間断続的に沖縄に駐留していました。沖縄が恋しい。とても良い人たちです。
Thanks for the tour! I'll be there Oct. 28th. Hopefully it's not that hot.
I was stationed in Hawaii. I lived on Ford Island At first and the buildings here remind me.of what I saw there in Ford Islean.
lol i see that A&W in the background and im all like "get a root beer float!"
it is almost reminiscent of buildings where im fr in the 70s/ 80s
Sinichi, we love you, please, stay safe and do not be depressed 🥰🥰🥰
I MISS THE OKINAWA LEMON TEA! It was my favorite!
I have to try it next time.
This was gorgeous, l loved the architecture in Naha city and the flowers in bloom so pretty. I hope you went back to the hotel the heat was to intense . Thanks so much Shinichi World 🌎 I always enjoy these excellent video. 😊
Cinder block houses...cinder block walls...like in Hawaii...
Although Okinawa and Hawaii are 2 completely different places, there are so many similarities. Keep up the awesome work. And, take care.
Lucky you. I wanted to stay there but had to move back to the states.

It looks like a gorgeous day. It's not like you were feeling 100F degree heat.....were you?
😆 you passed my cousins house 🏠. You called it a nice house with tropical plants. Thank you 😊
I luv Okinawa

Stay cool
Please be careful! The heat is so oppressive! I'm thinking this will be the only way I see Japan!..,Stay hydrated.
Okinawa seems really empty, people still afraid to go out?
Many people do not open businesses or start moving around until almost noon and stay open or out until 10 at night.

I would think that Okinawan houses are built to withstand typhoons that are not as strong as in Mainland Japan.

Take a cool bath/shower when you get back to your hotel
♥️♥️♥️
I can't believe the prices for those old houses there. It's 3x mainland prices
♥️
Wanted to see Okinawa from watching karate kid 2 in the 80s. Is the city from the movie the real one ?
Since you mentioned it...totally unscientific opinion. The concrete withstands typhoons. Not sure of the earthquake rate but it seems from some quick research the earthquakes seems to be deep and offshore as opposed to main islands of Japan. Maybe someone more informed can share local knowledge.
SO different since the Reversion 52 years ago (KOZA)
Similar to Taiwan! Except is less crowded.
Feel better soon. Do a Covid test and make sure you don’t have Covid

Top tip: Okinawa is the coolest place in Japan during the summer (sorry Sapporo!)
Okinawa gets hit with typhoons so the buildings need to withstand strong winds.
Isn’t this the place Abe was assassinated?
No, that's Nara.
ironically, you may have to got to Starbucks for Matcha. 😅
Many concrete bldg there because of strong typhoons threat
Nepalese
😇👑🌎🌏🌍💚
Kinda sad you loosing so much footage all the time because of that gopro ... maybe you should get something different as this seem to happen a lot ;(
Bro. Take the fast ferry to TOKOSHIKI island. That's the real Okinawa, not this boring NAHA shit.
AGAIN???!!!!
