Mourinho needs to be viewed from two different perspectives. The squad/ transfer manager and the tactician/ man management manager. In terms of assembling a squad in Portugal in the early 2000s, he not just used his analytical skill but also his knowledge and connections from years of being an assistant of Bobby Robson in Portugal and Spain. He also learned from Van Gaal at Barcelona. He then spent another couple of years in Portugal as head coach before moving to Porto. Let's not forget that he was not a nobody and was well-connected in Iberian football at the time. That obviously helped him assembling a squad not needing to spend big bucks but using his knowledge and philosophy already. The other thing is, Porto was not as bad as portrayed here in this video and had some decent players in the squad already. The other perspective is his tactical and motivational approach. And that is where he really shined in my opinion. We all know his play style and tactics. More importantly though, he made players play better than they actually were.
People call Pep a genius which is very true because of his perception and philosophy about football. But Jose's take on football often gets shadowed by his antics. We all have joked and memed him but we definitely can't deny his absolute brilliance in making his teams shine
@@alone2break He overachieved with a terrible Utd team, could have won a trophy with Spurs but they unfairly sacked him days before a final, then he goes to a Roma team in transition and he picks up a European trophy in his first season. People say his tactics aren't modern, meanwhile he still performs and wins trophies 🤷♂️
@@TheNelsonmonteiro money doesn't guarantee success. Man Utd have spent more than a billion and haven't won the league since Fergie. Madrid galacticos never won the Champions League.
The coach who started that Porto losing era was FERNANDO SANTOS. He had a PRIME Mário Jardel ( 2 times Golden Shoe and even scored 14 times in 11 games against Milan, Real, Bayern and Barcelona playing for teams like Porto, Galatasaray and Sporting) paired with a 21yo superstar in Deco, playing in the Portuguese League. Lost not one of those titles but 2 of them. Then went to Benfica and was sacked few months in as he was literally benching the best players for reasons no one understood (probably too good at attacking, who knows). That is the kind of garbage coach sinking the most talented National team ever.
@@comicbookguy2326 He was so bad that he literally forced us to play the sole way possible to win. By this i mean that we had an average team and had no business contending. But we had arguably the best player on earth at the time in it's prime. As such any other coach would have built a team to use him properly. Also, no one would ever dare to play such defensive football while having Ronaldo on the pitch. But this dude is so trash and so old fashioned that he literally applied a philosophy that only worked in the 90s. Him being bad forced the team to play the only way we could win. And then obviously it was a rollercoaster of endless luck and freak occurrences. For instance, Quaresma having a revival season out of thin air and Eder, literally the worst player on the roster, scoring the winner after the best player on earth being out because of an injury AND, more than that, having been selected ahead of André Silva who had a much better season and just scored an Hattrick in the cup final.

In hindsight it could be said Mourinho made the best out of the squad he had. Because even with heavy reinforcements, Conte hasn't been doing much better. Just goes to show that the problem is with the squad rather than the manager
Genuinely, as a spurs fan if lo celso, ndombele, son, and kane didn't have their injuries and we improved on center back and right back, we would've competed in the prem and won the europa league
he managed to get Tottenham to the first Final in years, got sacked before he got to play it, and Tottenham lost. It was one of the biggest clown moves ever, if you sack Mou before a final at least make sure you win it.
I cant stop thinking of the 2004 UCL, all the team that goes to the semifinals are indeed the best of the time and I still remember the excitement of how Depor beat Milan, Monaco beat Madrid, Magical Lyon with Juninho. Like, damn, those are some serious competition. And to add the dreamy miracle, Porto ended up winning the title. I cant think we could get any more magical moments to happen on a UCL in the next seasons.
And what's crazy is that Benfica could've been the team that got Mourinho, Deco and Maniche. Like you said Mourinho was manager in Benfica before being sacked, Maniche was sidelined and Deco said in interviews that when he was signed he thought he was going to play in Benfica, but end up in Alverca (Benfica's satellite club), never having the chance to play in Benfica because the manager at the time wasn't interested in young players (the same reason Maniche didn't played there), so when the time came on the option to buy Deco, Benfica didn't. Deco wanted to go back to Brazil but Jorge Mendes saw something in him and that's how he end up in Porto. Just shows how important it is the management side of things.
Mourinho > Pep A bit of a hot take but the fact Pep failed to win the UCL with city and Bayern so far justifies my opinion. Daily Dose Of Football also inspired me to make content like his, would be great to give my content a chance. Great video daily dose of football! 👍🙏
Feel the same, actually always felt like the pep teams were, on paper, better than the teams who actually won it in 2013/2020. Not saying he absolutely had to win one, and luck does play a role sometimes. But the fact that hes only made it to one final since barca is kinda shocking, even if (just for arguments sake) hes had an unfair amount of bad luck. 1 final in 10 years with those two teams? Not gon say hes a flop, no one in their right mind could say that. But it def feels like he couldve and perhaps shouldve done more. Thats why im also team mourinho.
Pep is good at being consistent, that's why he's won so many league title. But he is too over thinking during big game. The only 2 time he won UCL is when he let Messi do his magic, instead of forcing his strategy to the team.
I remember putting quite a chunk of money for Monaco to win that cup when I was about 20 years old. How wrong could I be, young and wreckless ha ha! I only have the greatest respect for Mourinho. It was evident what a great manager he was after that Porto final, and then taking on the Premier League by storm. Carvalho and Terry is one of the best centre back pairings I have ever witnessed. As he aged, it seemed to me he lost the ability to see the monetery value in players, opting to buy older, more expensive, ready made solutions. He should have stuck to the younger ones to mould them how he liked. It's difficult to train new things into players who are on the cusp of past their peak.
I couldn't agree more. The Terry and Carvalho pairing is arguably the best defensive centreback duo in my lifetime, at least for the premier league. There are definitely some contenders, one that comes to mind is Milans defence during those years and Man United. My saying could however be justified in the fact that they only conceded 15 goals during the 04/05 season(?) if im not mistaken - which to this day still is a premier league record and rather insane at that. When it comes to Mourinho it would certainly be interesting if he continued his talent seeking approach and bought more "unknown" talents, forming them into his squad rather than buying finished products. It has however proved time and time again to give him results and trophies, so who am I to judge?

Mourinho might have done a blunder in Man Utd with Pogba but he can manage a team with small budget look at AC Roma now, won UECL last year and now reached Semis in UEL, Indeed the special one 🥶
Idk if y'all noticed but his park the bus tactic is still followed by teams across the globe. Even Argentina played similarly during this WC when they were out of possession. His vision was different. He's the only manager whom even Pep and Klopp feared. He's the GOAT!
Don't forget that Mourinho ( and Bobby Robson) was teaching Guardiola while he was still a Barcelona player. Guardiola owes a lot to Mourinho for what he is today.
to be fair his attacking tactics work most of the time, they just dont really require much individual talent but rather everyone to press, give forward passes, dribble a bit and win counter pressings. So teams with spoiled and complacent players like tottenham struggle to get on his methodology.
I remember the CL league year very well, after Utd's match the conversation was never "who are we playing next?" It was always "who are we beating next?". It was an amazing time to follow a club.

I don't think they would have won against Milan and Real Madrid/Arsenal.
@@museyamwa What I'm saying is that Porto, Deportivo and Monaco could only suceed because other clubs struggled. United rebuilt, Barcelona was broken, Galacticos falling apart. Abramovitch had not spent that much yet. Today all great players are stacked in just a couple of clubs. Great video! You should definitely make a full video on Carlos Alberto, the genius that never was! He was regarded in Brasil as our next Number 10 but after the Champions League final his attitude simply ruined his career!
While other managers like Guardiola or Ancelotti made winning teams keep winning, Mourinho created and shaped those teams into winners no matter the obstacles or problems. Thats why he is considered a football enemy by UEFA themselves, i dare to say Mourinho escaped the football's matrix and permanently transforms whenever team he goes.
Those were epic times. The fact that Mourinho won Manchester Derby after a 2-0 down is insane. Nobody has that achievement then.
Mourinho chelsea with Damian Duff, Robben and Drogba was something to see even as a fan of Man Utd that team counter attack was beautiful, Today i still think that this team was on of the most entertaining team i have ever watched because at any moment they could pull up a goal
Thank you. I am a chelsea fan and i tell people, i enjoy counter-attacking wing football like fergie's utd team used to do it. however, the most entertaining football i have ever enjoyed has to be jose.s first chelsea era..... we were flying.... they called us boring but opposition didn't know the joy we had from being absolutely sure we would hurt you, and we hurt everybody that season. we only lost one game to city by a penalty.... if we had drawn city, we would have made a mess of arsenal's invincible by huge points difference.....
Truly Mou is one of the top managerial figure in the world, I like how he handles teams

United always had a lot o money and some of the most expensive players in the world. Sir alex is great but what mourinho did is unparalelled in the football world. He one the UEFA Cup and Champions League on consecutive years with a portuguese team (the smallest budget in the premier league is bigger than the biggest budgets in the portuguese league... you can't even compare the resources at the disposal of sir alex with the resources mourinho had at porto because they are miles away. or million in this case. The team with which mourinho won both competitions was made mostly of players who were complete strangers to the world of foottbal, whom he brought in very cheap from small clubs in portugal...)
@@entreguesaosbichos I am a HUGE mourinho fan and a HUGE FC. Porto fan.
I agree that it was absolutely insane winning UEFA and CL back to back. We were invencible playing at home. We played face-to-face with the european giants.
However, the Man Utd we know now is not the Man Utd from the 80s when Sir Alex arrived. They haven't won a league title since 60s, the were relegated in the 70s and they were struggling to get a top 4 finish and many times finished on 8th or 10th.
What he did with Man Utd was incredible. Also, his achievements for Aberdeen were amazing.
Both are great, but because of his longevity, I have to give a very small edge to Sir Alex. I wish Mourinho could spend more than 4 years in a club.
Klopp won every major trophy with Dortmund and Liverpool spending far less money.

True. Players like Maniche, Derlei, McCarthy or Costinha weren't as awesome as they looked under Mourinho.
been that long since Mourinho was at Porto that Nuno Espírito Santo has since been a manager at Rio Ave, Valencia, Porto, Wolves, Spurs and Al-Ittihad
My favourite run ever to have witnessed. Simply magical, unforgettable.
He's one of the greatest, no doubt about it.
People call Pep a genius which is very true because of his perception and philosophy about football. But Jose's take on football often gets shadowed by his antics. We all have joked and memed him but we definitely can't deny his absolute brilliance in making his teams shine
He's becoming more and more of a meme himself.. his past are very solid, man united ruined him..
With the money that the teams that pep managed invested I could manage them too.
@@TheNelsonmonteiro money doesn't guarantee success. Man Utd have spent more than a billion and haven't won the league since Fergie. Madrid galacticos never won the Champions League.
@@TheNelsonmonteiro Sure but can you take them to the heights that he's taken them?
Fernando Santos moment
how this man won us the euro we will never know
@@comicbookguy2326 He was so bad that he literally forced us to play the sole way possible to win.
@@gabkoost you need to correct your fact that old lady was perfect with his tactics in the euros that year watch the games not the highlights he used his midfield with mind the midfield was the best cause of the coach style of play Christiano ronaldo was the boost to the team but without him also portugal would have managed to win the wuros cause of the midfield

If he got the club’s support like Conte does, he wouldve wouldve achieved a lot more at Tottenham.
He was Conte before Conte. Not just at Tottenham, but in every other aspect as well.
He got sacked less than a week before his first final for the club
Don't disrespect him by comparing him to conte
As a Chelsea Fan, Morinho is a God to us.
These kind of video always makes you love football. I can’t explain it.
Agreed

Mourinho is the greatest coach i ever watched
Imagine mourinho winning ucl with as roma( impossible)
And the final is at old trafford against fc barcelona
that is possible this year for the europa league i guess. just not at old trafford
Winning UCL with As Roma (nearly impossible)

At Monaco it wasn’t Djibril Cissé with thé Liverpool jersey, but Aliou Cissé, still à good player at the top of his game in that moment
