  • I finally picked up an O scale coal tipple / mine facility for the layout! I also started with real dirt and static grass scenery.

Great progress! Don’t worry about what it looks like now. Get some other stuff in there and it will all come together.
I had to make custom portals because I put them on the corners…but I did use 072 curves, and a big boy needs a ton of room for the overhang.

Looking good so far, I like the track ballast. I tried the aluminum foil idea for an N scale barn roof about 20 years back, used a comb to make the pattern, worked well.

I am building a mill from the same company as you’re mine I used to wash of alcohol with a couple of drops of Indian ink when it dries it gives the appearance of silver gray wood, and then I dry brushed with white paint the corners can be covered with thin strips of balsa wood nice work so far

I’m realizing I should have started with stains and washes.

Great job on the dirt. I need to find a static grass device. Looks awesome.

Another Idea for the roof would be to buy a small sheet of corrugated plastic from one of the major hardware stores, cut it to size and paint it for your mining operation.

Great update. Like the layout changes introduced on prior videos and how it has been integrated into the operations of the new industry structures. Maybe I missed it, but have you told us the source of the new coal tipple/mine facility? Thanks for sharing.

I actually forgot to mention where I got it.
I purchased it on eBay from the seller CheapSk8Buildings but they are also listed on Etsy for cheaper from the same seller.

In the part of the video, toward the beginning, in which you were talking about the grass and dirt area, you were saying you weren't too happy with the way it currently looks -- but I think it is looking ok and will definitely look better to you once you have added more items such as vehicles (cars/trucks/equipment), people, etc. Once you start adding in little detail things like that, it will give your eyes/brain more to look at and it will all blend together more. I know I'm not saying it correctly, but hope you understand my meaning. Sort of what you were saying about the way adding switching/operations/buildings added so much more to your layout.
After you begin adding the little detail things I mentioned above you can always move them, change them around, etc. and if necessary go in and touch-up areas of the dirt & grass...but as it is now it looks good, and I believe you will be happy with it once it all starts to "come-together" when you begin adding in small detail objects. Project is 'work-in-progress' and early stages, but looks really good right now with lots of potential. When building models/layouts/dioramas there is one thing to keep in mind -- it will never be "done"... you will spend forever finding little things here and there that you want to add to, change, modify, etc. -- it's great part of the hobby.
You're doing fine, and this will look great with time and patience. 👍🚞👍
