  • This video shows how we packed hours of prototypical operation into a 3' x 18' modular train layout. The video explains the strategy, switch lists, various moves, and the ebb and flow of completing work on an assignment.

      Thanks for your comment! I agree there needs to be more true operating sessions in larger scales. I learned about Ops from my HO buddies and attend sessions twice a week which is what made me think of developing an O-scale switching layout because all the concepts can be executed in any scale. Hopefully this will inspire some others!

      @@suncoastcenterforfinescale5802 Purchasing a house within the year and it has inspired me. Truthfully all you need is the dimenstios of the one in the video... same track plan and can expand at a later date.
      Thanks

    FIne O scale is a thing to behold. I'm a 3 railer myself, but I have immense appreciation for 2 trail O.

    Fantastic layout switching is more interesting than watching trains go round in a circle I'm from new Zealand switching is called shunting in new Zealand railway yards cheers from Bruce Blenheim south island new Zealand

      Thanks, Bruce! I know about shunting as I have been to New Zealand four times in the last five years and spent time in the South Island. In fact, I took the Trans Alpine Express from Christchurch to Greymouth and back. It was a fantastic trip!

    Really great scenery work. The one thing that needs to happen to compliment that level of skill and effort, would be to “dial in” your starting voltage, mid voltage and end voltage. The high hood is starting and stopping too fast to be realistic. Other then that, this is awesome!👍🏻

      I agree, Timothy, and we have done that since shooting this video. The big challenge for the video was I could not narrate it and run the train at the same time so our operator got a bit heavy handed on the throttle:)

    Super layout . How did you obtain the building flats? 3D, make them or buy them? Everything looks amazing.

      Hi, Dennis. The building flats are a mixture of scratch-built and modified kit structures. The Westinghouse factory is scratch-built as is the distillery. The others are modified kits.

    For "O" Scale, that's an impressive operation considering the limited space. I was following each locomotive move made on the video and comparing it to the track plan shown at 4:00 minutes. But they don't match up. The actual layout has trackage and turnouts not shown on the layout drawing. Was additional trackage added later to improve operations? Great layout and very well made video! I hope to see it in person and operate it someday!

    • @suncoastcenterforfinescale5802
      @suncoastcenterforfinescale5802  2 роки тому

      I hope you do get a chance to see the railroad someday (and operate it). Yes, we enhanced the track layout a bit after the layout drawing was complete which is why you see the discrepancy.

    Question: right around 13:30 you're explaining why you can't make your pulls first, then switch out the yard to then put those cars into a storage track. Why not? I may not understand the limited space here but couldn't you make your pulls, set those cars in the clear of the yard, switch out the yard to get the cars you need to spot as well as free up a track, then put the original cars into the yard, then go spot up the industries? Again I may not be understanding the limited space here, so my thinking might just be impossible, I've never modeled O scale before. Love the video, though, very accurate in terms of how we switch out!

    • @suncoastcenterforfinescale5802
      @suncoastcenterforfinescale5802  3 роки тому

      In concept you are right, the cars that are pulled could be set aside on free track space until yard trackage opens up. What we are dealing with in this particular layout is the limited space. There is very little free trackage available to accommodate cars waiting to moved elsewhere especially when the run around tracks need to remain open to move the locomotive to the other side of the cars to push them into the yard. I wanted viewers to get a sense for the alternate pull/place decisions as they figure out how to get the switch list completed. Thanks for your comments and glad you are enjoying the video!

      @@suncoastcenterforfinescale5802 The layout operations are very realistic with the limited space. Pretty close to the yard i work at unfortunately, things can get pretty tight. Thanks for replying!

      My suggestion is reach out model railroad groups and clubs in your area to see if there are any operations groups. The NMRA also has an ops special interest group and there may be some people in your area.

    I'm interested in 2-rail O scale operations. Where do I go to find info about 2-rail DC locomotives? Everything I've seen in the past was 3-rail and that does not interest me.
