Love your posts and videos. I have a CRF450X modified for dual sport use. R head, stock cam SS valves, oil change intervals are +1000km. carry 25L of fuel, etc. TRX piston, Motul 300V oil only, larger clutch cover for more oil, suspension does the job no issues, Fastway pegs, large screen, nav map reader ICOs etc, rally soft grips, barkbusters, bash plate, TM chain sliders, Ironman sprockets, DID ZVMX 520 chain, heavy duty wheels all round from Haan wheels with a cush hub drives, so far over 4000km on the mods and no oil use or discolouration at oil change time. larger front brake disc. so far pretty bullet proof, cruises at the speed limit all day.

I have an XR650L and just bought the CRF450X to keep up with my KTM buddies on trails. Agree with this video 100%. We are taking the Oregon BDR - 6 day trip - and would never consider a CRF450x. The XR650L is perfect for such a ride. If there was more pavement, I would take a GS. And I am in my 50s. The CRF450x is perfect for daylong riding on normal to challening single track and perfect to go on pavement for short trips to get to the next off road arena.

My 1st and last dirt bike was an 08 Crf450x. absolutely stock exept for long range fuel tank. loved it. did many races on it. sold it as I didn't have time to ride anymore.

FYI, you should have put a link to Frickin Jim's channel either in the video or description. I know its not that hard to find his channel, but that's usually standard practice. Good to see you back on the bike, hope that means everything is good on the medical front! Really looking forward to more of your content and I really want to see how that CRF450X holds up, could be a bike I'd end up considering.

Very interested to see how this turns out. So many people preach doom and gloom when running a high performance 4 stroke even at less than race pace. Seeing how it does under an average rider is going to be an eye opener for many I think. Carry On!

After finding an XR650R to go with my XR250R and XR400R, I thought I had a good selection of the best Trail friendly bikes that Honda had to offer, with the exception of the legendary XR600R. Then you come along, with this excellant video, and I find that I am suddenly missing a bike in my line up lol. You would make a bloody good Salesman, here in New Zealand haha.

So your video is describing a KTM. Hondas are bulletproof. I raced a 2007 CRF450X in the baja 1000. It finished, 6 guys riding it on a stock motor in 2010. The first time I went to Moab, 2008, I tore down the motor to inspect. I put a piston and rings in it. (it didn't need it, but I had the motor apart so I did it. I had a 2005 CRF450X , I rode it to 13,000 miles off road/Dual sport, street legal, before I did the Valves. I put a few clutches in it, but I abuse clutches. I desert raced the 05 CRF450X, motod it and rode it every where, single track, 5 miles of HELL. you name it. After I did the head. I had AS racing do the vales for me. I rode it another 5,000 Miles before I had a bearing in the tranny start to go. I now have a 2016 CRF450X and have done the same mods, gearing 14/48 and it runs great, no stalling after doing a few jetting changes.

    I owned a street registered 2009 CRF450X back in 2011 and 2012.
I liked the bike's strong points: Great stability over rough ground at speed, excellent firm suspension, and strong power and torque.
I didn't use mine for bona-fide dual-purpose riding, but the reason I get it registered for the street was to be able to legally ride in on the motorcycle trail loop in my local State Forest.
On certain parts of that trail loop the CRF450X felt like magic with those strong points I mentioned above.
I have fond memories of the bike. 🙂

I purchased my 2012 450X new in 2016 and got it for 4,200 out the door, price played a big part of why I purchased it and have enjoyed the powerhouse greatly My bike was a bit touchy also but after installing a Rekluse clutch the stalling issues has now been a thing of the past. The oil change is so easy that I change the oil and clean the air filter after every ride. Stay safe

The maintenance intervals for dirtbikes is a complete deal breaker for me. even if its street legal, oil changes at 600 miles and top end rebuilds? As a race bike I get it, but It amazes me that people are okay spending that much to take care of a bike.

I had the chance to ride a 2018 CRF450RX a few weeks ago and I absolutely LOVED it. The weight (about 15-20kg lighter than my DRZ) and the suspension were FANTASTIC, and the POWER!!! Well, it was actually TOO powerful for me, to the point it was a lot of work to do technical trails (of course it's not build for anything other that ripping through the desert at insane speeds). Overall, I enjoyed it more than my DRZ (which I love), but the fact that it's not a practical dual sport is off-putting.

I have a 2006 as a dual sport and it's loads of fun I am just cautious about letting others ride it, some are not ready for it. Valves are easily adjusted by a amateur with a calculator and tq wrench. I let it finish eating my dirt bike tires😁

  • @MotoExploring
    @MotoExploring 7 років тому

I approve this video!! Change the battery from the 7 stock to a 9 of lithium, you just need to redo the battery compartment but you will not need to use kickstart ever.
I had a DRZ400E and now have a CRF450X, the CRF feels much more light then the DRZ. I just ride at road and still could feel the difference.
I did + - 9000 miles in the last year & half, always just using start button, just done the 15th change of oil xD .
Mine is not stock now, i have R cams, R exhaust, deredistricted , makes 58.7hp , for riding offroad is better to let it stock, is too harsh now.

Living in California, could not even think of a project like this.
If 80% of your adventure trip will be dirt, might make sense.
If not, a DS will be more comfortable and dependable.

I have had a 2005 450x since new it's so much fun, it feels like it has a lot more punch then a modern bike and doesn't really feel like it's lacking in anything compared to a modern bike . replaced the valves, valve springs and piston after 9000km for a wisco piston, kibble white stainless steel valves and springs. after 800km I haven't had to check the clearances .

  • @savagesalvage4957
    @savagesalvage4957 7 років тому

You can multiply honda's maintenance schedules by a number between 4 and 12. It's meant for when you race them, and this type of riding doesn't really strain the bike. Ignore the 10 or 15 hour intervals they claim, I rode a Honda 250r 200 hours before doing a valve check, and only changed the oil every 20 to 50 hours (depending on how hard i had been riding) and you can get custom sprockets to up the top speed for less than a hundred bucks. Getting a 1 tooth bigger front sprocket does 3-4 rear teeth of change. I'm glad people know the 450x still exists with the RX now out I haven't seen a video about a 450X in a long time

I found one for about the same price you paid but a little more anyway I got a great deal on financing that I can’t pass up. and your video has made me make up my mind with many laughs as well like you, I am also a poor man’s mechanic that doesn’t want to do a whole lot of maintenance that trust the Honda engine to last as far as the top end work goes lol anyway thanks a lot. I appreciate it it!

I'm a diehard fan of the X bikes (I'm riding a CRF250X now), but I chuckle when people talk about their bulletproof reliability. Sure, once you ditch the Ti valves and slap some kibblewhites in, I'm with ya. Also, the suspension is great for open-class desert from the factory but it's a brick in the woods and needs some serious softening up with a revalve. Oh, and the stock rims/spokes are junk.

Great review! I'm after the same kind of thing. I want something that's plated and don't want to give up too much performance. Where I am, the only street legal option is the WR450F, so I'm after one of those. I rode a couple and they're exactly what I'm after.

great video as always. the euros will always have that extra gear over the Japanese. I love Honda's and considered these but they are only grey imports and most often unable to be road registered in my country. as of this year Honda New Zealand will be importing new and supporting the 2017 CRF450x the first time the 450x has been sold on the market as a new bike. so for me it wasn't an option though I knew they existed over seas. we do get the odd Chinese knock offs but on the end I went with the 6th gear of a European. keep up the good work looking forward to seeing the building serious

So two things. #1. How do they do the Baja 1,000 on a bike that needs an oil and filter change just past the half way mark? #2. This does make me want to get a dirt bike dirt bike. A bike that I would ride maybe once a month that I would haul to Rampart or some other gnarly but fun trail system where it would be used for what it was made to be use for. However, it's hard to justify that when Xena can ride to those trails and conquer them with a little less style, but way way way more comfort.

I have a flogged old '08 carburetted WR450F that also makes ridiculous power. It used to be very frusterating to manage the throttle on rough terrain and on hills... here's what was happening.
Have you opened that flat slide carb? The slide has 4 little wheels that it rolls up and down on. Over time, oscilating manifold pressure with each thump eventually cause these to pound groves in the aluminum and allow the little skirt seal on the back of the slide to leak erratically, causing a sudden power loss and chugging on rough terrain. The CRF450X uses pretty much the same FCR carb, so you could expect the same problem eventually... maybe not as severe as what mine was doing, but that might be what's happening.
I carefully filled and covered the groves with JB Weld and 0.18 x 0.002" stainless foil (roughed up on the back), using a very square and smooth steel block (lightly oiled) clamped in there to keep it perfectly flat. It's been reliably running great for years now. I'm not coming from a KLR, but even with my limited expierence, nothing about power delivery makes wheel-lifting hill climbs or descents challenging. Not something I could say before fixing it!

I think am going to buy one spring next year and make it street legal. 265lbs is another good point, almost 100lbs lighter then a dr650. I need a bike that can cruise 80 but doesn't weigh a ton.

That is definitely a crazy fast bike. I also have a husky TC 450 which is crazy fast too.

I don't know, man. I keep hearing how dual sports and dirt bikes are the way to go for novice riders and then I hear how this thing scares the crap out of you...I think after I get my GS850 running again, I'm gonna save up for a DR-Z400E.

I know its a new bike but I want you to let us know what you think of the new ktm 300 with transfer port injection. KTM has smoothed their 2t out lately and the new TPI is supposed to fix the MPG issue. Would be interesting to hear your input from a dual sport perspective.

everide if you want a challenge, try riding an early 80's yamaha yz 490 full out. those bikes are bullet proof and like riding a rocket up a cliff

I've heard 490s described as many things, and bulletproof and fast were not it.
