    Just bought a slightly used 19 L with 1,100 miles. Owner did all mods except Thermo delete and bark busters. Just did a 145 mile ride from Julian through Anza Borrego, Ocotillo Wells, Borrego Springs and back. This bike feels equal to my track 450R. with the 3.2 gallon IMS tank, the L actually calculated fuel used based on average MPG. Fuel light came on at 2.7 gallons used. Love this L-RL. RIDE🔥RED

      Just for additional information… I could ride my CRF450RX all day on the dirt …
      But; it’s grim on tarmac.
      Why do I say that?
      Short gearing (the 5 speed box ) vibration and noise mean even 25km on tarmac is a challenge.

    Maybe I’m not as hardcore off-road as most of the folks here but I’m quite happy with my L. Coming from a KLR and a DRZ before that, my 450L is a monster off-road by comparison. And I left my exhaust and tune stock. It’s plenty fast for me. Interesting points here though.

    I watched this video several months ago when I was contemplating a CRF450L or CRF450X. I could relatively easily plate the CRF450X, I actually plated a CRF250RX last year. So I was thinking about getting a CRF450X and dual sporting it. But, in the end, I found a 2019 CRF450L with 750 miles on it at a decent price. The 450 is my "backup" dirt bike anyway. If I'm riding strictly off road or only need to ride a few miles of pavement to connect the trails, I prefer the CRF250RX, especially for tighter trails. If the trails are wide open or I have 10+ miles of pavement to ride to get to the trails, I'll take the CRF450L.

    • @fynn8252

      Great choice! In your situation, the 450L makes more sense. I ended up selling the 450X and downsizing to a WR250F. 250s rock off-road, especially in the tighter technical sections. I sort of lost interest in long distance dual-sport trips so a bigger cc bike wasn't really necessary. I still get the itch every now and again though!

    • @jwaller1327
      @jwaller1327 Рік тому +4

      I have a buddy with the WR250F. His is uncorked. Awesome bike. The weekend after getting my 450L, I rode it 30 miles to meet him at the trails we ride, sort of a proof of concept to myself about the dual sport capabilities of the 450L. At one point, we swapped bikes. It was shocking how much easier it is to ride the 250 on the tight stuff. The next time, I loaded my 450L and 250RX in the back of the pickup and rode them back to back. The 450 makes the 250 toy-like, but in a good way. Still, the 450 is going to stay in my stable for a considerable time. We’re selling our house and belongings to live full time in an RV and going mobile. My 450L will be my commuter. I’ve got a Triumph Scrambler and Versys X300 street bikes that I’m getting rid of. Space is going to be at a premium so having a street legal dirt bike that shares so much in common with my actual dirt bike just makes the most sense.

  • @heynow3788

    I learned the uncorking lesson on my current bike. Lots of money spent to get a dual sport set up for dirt. I currently have that bike up for sale and will be getting a 450x shortly. I totally agree, it's the perfect fit.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  2 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately many of the newer bikes benefit greatly with an "uncork" treatment, especially if it's 50 state road and trail legal. This bike still comes with some of the emission stuff but it's easy (and cheap) to remove. All I would recommend is a fuel tuner (like a DynoJet) to fix the lean conditions & increase engine reliability. I hope the 450X will be the right decision for you! Thanks for watching.

      @@fynn8252 thanks, I'm looking forward to getting one. I'm ok with the off road emissions stuff for the most part. I was initially considering a 450L/RL or Husky FE501s. I was really dissapointed with all the reviews of the 450RL because I didn't want to buy one only to have to change the ECU and exhaust to make it run correctly. Been there, done that. Then it dawned on me... The 450x has no catalytic converter and a bigger header already, not to mention the ECU map is better than the RL. And the X is lighter. With some blinkers and a horn (and an LED headlight) it'll make a great dual sport. Thanks for the video.

    Decent review. If you live in California buy the l/rl you need the plate with all the restrictions the libtards have forced on us. If you can plate an x in your state maybe that works for you. Same motor basically with a different ecu mapping but that changes with the aftermarket units. Pricey but gets you there. After market exhausts, pricey again but we know more air flow equals more power. You do get the weight loss as well. It appears that after the mods the L/RL is real close to the X in engine performance and closer in weight but not as light. The extra tail section frame does allow you to have a tail rack for carrying stuff, whether it’s tools or something else it’s damn convenient. At least it’s a Honda and not one of those white or orange bikes.

    Modded 450L owner here. I think the real dilemma here is if you are able to plate a 450X where you live, do you go with the 450X or the WR450?

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  2 роки тому +4

      I went through this dilemma as well. Here are 3 reasons I decided to go with the X or the WR450F:
      First, more linear and calm motor. The engine was orientated to be a little friendlier and longer lasting. Everything from the lower compression, third ring on the piston, larger oil capacity, thermostat and overall reduced power compared to the R made it seem like you wouldn't have to touch the motor. So, I like how Honda actually made physical changes to their engine rather than only detuning a race motor with software. The YZ-F, YZ-FX & WR have the exact same engine, only mapped differently.
      Second, the 6 speed wide-ratio was a big deal for me since I have a range of riding styles. However, the WR's last gear is right in-between my 5th and 6th so cruising at 60 won't be that big of a difference. But having 1 additional gear is nice.
      Third, upgrading the gas tank on the 450X is MUCH easier than the WR. On the Yamaha, IMS makes a 2.8 gallon but it protrudes out of the bike and requires you to cut foam from the seat. You can ditch the aftermarket tanks completely and just buy a fuel bag. The only issue is they need to be stored somewhere.
      Overall, the two bikes are honestly so close and so good. Next time I'd consider the WR for its better suspension, handling, exhaust routing, and lighter weight.

    • @mikeisland7382
      @mikeisland7382 2 роки тому +2

      @@fynn8252 Fair points. Fuel tanks are the downfall of the twin spar frame. 15+L tank should be part of every D/S and enduro design. No one wants a 7L tank. 32,000km rebuilds and the extra ring was the big seller for me too over the competition. As for suspension, compared to the WR do you think there's much difference? While I haven't ridden the Yamaha the Honda suspension is brilliant once properly sprung. I suspect adding a Rekluse or flywheel weight to the Honda would close the gap so much to make it only a colour choice issue. If Yamaha wanted to own the market they'd release a legal, lowered, de-tuned WR500Tenere with a 20L tank, Fisher seat and small windscreen. A guy can dream.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  2 роки тому +1

      @@mikeisland7382 The suspension on the Honda is really good and I absolutely love it. For faster riding, the WR250F that I rode took higher speed bumps better. I'd have to have both side by side and play with each to get a comprehensive opinion. Everyone says the KYB's are best in class so I just figured they might "technically" be better.

    All 450f's get hot in tight sections. The reason you didn't notice is because you don't have a gauge. When it starts popping and has no low end torque (aka stalls constantly), its boiling the F over :) These bikes need a temp gauge &/or a fan. Its funny how all the reviews bash them for having no grunt, and then they show pictures in a Moab single track with waterafalls... its a trail bike, not an erzberg rodeo clown. Good bikes all around, just know the limits, we've had them all (XR, RX, X Gen1, X Gen3) and for desert riding, Hondas are king. See you out there!!!

    What lighting kit did you use for the road legal aspect? The Tusk kit I see online looks clunky and not nice and slim like yours. Yours looks like the “tidy tail” kit from TacoMoto. For the front blinkers, what are they mounting to?

      This actually is the Tusk Street legal kit. It’s tucked underneath the plastics so it appears smaller. The front turn signals are mounted to the upper triple clamps. Basically it’s a thin oval sheet of metal with 3 holes. 2 for the upper fork pinch bolts and one for the turn signal.
      Looking back, I wouldn’t buy the kit again because the wiring harness was so bulky and didn’t route nicely. I just zip tie my license plate to a backpack and signal with my hands. I don’t spend much time on the pavement with these dirt bikes.

    I would have been better off with the x but in Canada Honda quit selling it. I don't know if we have tougher emissions rules or something or what the reasoning was
    So I ended up with the rl. I'm not unhappy with it, but I'm not thrilled either. It's super expensive and it cost basically another 2000 bucks even still to make it usable. You almost have no choice but to get an exhaust and ecu or its practically unusable. I've got it set up well now, but it was really expensive to make what is essentially a worse bike for off-roading. I considered just getting an R but I can't plate one at all here so for the little road use I need, it wouldn't work. An x could have been modified easily to be road plated

      Neither the X or the L have a cush drive. Some people in the beginning associated the rubber coated rear sprocket (on the L) with “dampening”, but it only reduces noise. The oil changes on both are every 600 miles or 25-30 hours if you’re average speed is around 20 mph. Suspension on the X and L are similar but I believe there are some minor tweaks since the ground clearance and wheelbase is different. The R is valved differently and has stiffer springs.

The tag bracket is made by enduro engineering: www.amazon.com/Enduro-Engineering-License-Plastic-Husqvarna/dp/B06XZR4XH9/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2AEXJB0LWS66A&keywords=enduro+engineering+bracket&qid=1640790692&sprefix=enduro+engineering+bracket%2Caps%2C127&sr=8-1

      @@captainamerica9353 I'm not a legal expert but here was my situation. When I bought the bike used, it came with an Arizona title from the prior owner, no MSO or COO. I don't recall seeing the "For off-road use only" phrase anywhere on the paper. I took the title to the DMV and asked for a title transfer. They also asked if I needed a license plate/OHV sticker and I said: "sure". They also asked how much highway use it would get, and I replied: "no highway, just backroads". After everything was said and done, I walked out with a temporary licence plate, my registration and OHV sticker.
      I think the whole "getting a dirtbike street legal" is dependant on a state-by-state basis. For example, California & Oregon don't allow plated dirt bikes at all whereas Utah and Arizona aren't as strict. So depending on where you live, the process and rules can be different. Feel free to reply back if you have any more questions. Thanks for watching!

      In my opinion, yes and no. What I like about the X is that it's 15 lbs lighter and slightly less restrictive. Not saying the X runs perfectly stock but I don't really hear anyone complaining. This is similar to comparing the KTM 500 XC-W and EXC. They're basically same bike but one has slightly better fueling and a less restricted pipe. However, some people might look at this video and say: "I'm going to modify the bike anyway and for $200 more I get an LED light, everything to be street legal and an extended rear subframe. In that case, going with the L makes sense! I do think there should be a larger price gap between the two. Keep the L at $10K and drop the X to $9500-$9600.

      According to Jimmy Lewis from dirtbike test, the stock bike runs great. There could be a few reasons that lead the PO to buying it. But if you’re making any changes to the exhaust, fuel needs to be added. You can also get away with a dobeck programmer to fix the lean conditions.
