    One thing I didn't mention was maintenance. I change the oil every 500 miles, replace the air filter when it looks dirty and keep the main drive clean. Easy bike to maintain!

      The 2-strokes are amazing but the the 4 bangers work well too! My decision window keeps narrowing and I think I found the one. Hint: It’s a sibling of one of your machines.

    My bud bought a '19 while i was in San Diego, him and I both having Old Gen 450x's. I got to ride it and was impressed, really great trail bike instead of high strung XC or MX bike. The handling was noticably better, and also even weighing about the same the new one felt WAY lighter. The weight is an advantage at high speed and desert terrain, as it was made for desert racing. Honda fit and finish is always impressive too. Great bikes for Western / Southwestern US offroad riding. NOT good for woods or enduro riding! I sold my old gen as soon as I got back to Midwest

      @fynn8252  Рік тому +1

      Agreed! I have heard similar feedback from Jimmy Lewis over at Dirtbike Test. The bike has great manners at higher speeds. Honda also recently changed their website photo background for this bike from a forest to a desert. Makes sense to me!

    Adding the dual sport kit to an off road bike is a much better way to go than getting a heavy pig that comes street legal. I have the DRZ and have pulled muscles in my back just putting it on the stand. I'm a Yamaha fan, but I am jealous of the 6 speed transmission.

    Great review. I'm not a very experienced rider, but want to get a bike after the new year. Still bouncing around what bike to get, what size and what brand. I grew up with Hondas but still open to Yamaha, Husky, and Gas Gas. Not quite sure where to ride yet but I'm in Cave Creek, so basically close to where you're riding. Keep putting out the great videos. They're appreciated.

      Thank you! From my experience, the small/medium displacement range is the sweet spot for trail riding. Right now, the KTM 350 is probably the best all-around platform for dirt bikers in any skill level. I went from the 450X to a WR250F and my riding ability has actually improved a lot! The handing and controllability is a big advantage for the smaller bikes. I mostly ride in the Rio Verde area (144th off Dynamite) and Wildcat pass.

  • @DesertVetRider

    Excellent review! I also ride here in the Az Valley. I currently ride a KTM 300EXC. That bike is perfect for our rough single track. I even took it out to the motocross track and was able to clear all the table tops on it. With that being said, I really want a dual-sport to ride around town and explore some other trails. I am debating hard between the X and RL. I am not going to sell my KTM, so I am leaning towards the RL since it is a little more street friendly. Not to mention, the RL is just a tad shorter in seat height. I am 5'9". Anything helps! Btw, I rode a WR250F years ago and loved it. I ended up trading it in when I bought a CRF450 and started racing.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому +1

      Thank you! In your situation, I'd lean towards the RL because you already have an excellent trail bike. However, I would also consider the 500 exc-f. That's probably the most versatile DS on the market. The Honda is more focused at being ridden fast, so you will feel right at home from your crf450. Like I mentioned with the X, it has a higher chance of stalling when things get technical. Besides that, it does better the more open it gets. Both the KTM and Honda are abundant on the used market. Hopefully you find something that makes you happy!
      If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I'm also on the Arizona Dual-Sport Riders page on facebook. Just look for Fynn.

    Great coverage man, seriously thanks. I’m stuck between the wr450 and the 450x.. The ability to change maps on wr (with purchase). Riding is local desert race and trail rides, and a future Baja run. Any advice?

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому +1

      Thank you J D! Much appreciated. Knowing what I know now, I would go for the WR450F all day. With the mapping ability and speed sensitive suspension, it can do everything the 450X can plus more. The issue is that the wifi unit (for map changing) is super hard to come by and costs $650+! But you can get the GYTR ECU for ~$150 which gives the bike way more power.

    Have you thought of adding a rekluse clutch that should solve your stalling at low speed issue.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому

      It would have eliminated the stalling for sure! I have thought about the Rekluse CX or X but since a majority of my riding wasn't in technical conditions, the cost wasn't justifiable for me. I think two big factors that lead me to stalling was a heavy clutch pull and too much slack on the throttle cable. My WR250F stalls way less because I can easily modulate the clutch with only one finger and there's almost no play in the throttle. The Honda needed 2-3 fingers.

    Great review. I wonder if they left the headlight and a few other items off as a means to make the 450L more appealing to folks who were considering making this street legal.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  2 роки тому +1

      That could be the case. I've noticed that all dedicated off-road bikes come with incandescent bulbs, no LED's. Only 2 of the street-legal performance DS's have LED: Honda & Beta.

    I had a question on reliability on this bike.. how has it treated you so far and how many hours/miles are you at now and has the engine been untouched.. how soon are you thinking it will go before needing new piston etc. I’m in the market for this same bike. Thanks

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому +1

      Appreciate it! I’m at 3,100 miles or around 105 hours and I’ve had no issues. There’s a guy on my Facebook group who has 25,000 miles on his 450L, which shares the same engine and transmission as my bike. 95% of his riding has been off-road too. Hasn’t touched motor either. In my opinion, if you do the oil changes every 600 miles like the manual says, always keep the air filter clean and don’t rev the hell out of it, the motor will easily last 10’s of thousands of miles or maybe close to 1000 hours. Since this bike has only been out for 4 ish years, there aren’t many long-term reports. But the bike will likely outlive you :)

    • @Dazed207
      @Dazed207 Рік тому +1

      @@fynn8252 wow awesome and quick feedback. So the bikes gauge cluster does record miles just not the hours? Another question for you I read the previous gen of 450x did in fact have some valve issues and piston issues after around 100-200 hours and needed replacement with steel valves I believe, so this is not the case with this bike? Thanks!

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому +1

      @@Dazed207 Correct, it only records miles. I'd suggest buying a cheap hour meter to keep track. The newer 450X does not have any valve or piston issues AFAIK. I have not come across anyone who has had any engine problems.

    • @Dazed207
      @Dazed207 Рік тому +1

      @@fynn8252 so it’s safe to say they since correct this issue. That’s what I’m really trying to find out because I know looking years back at previous models the valves were the main issue and a lot of people swapped for stainless steel trx valves, so I really hope all these issues have since been corrected so I can go on through with purchasing my new bike!

    The weight difference is only 15lbs. And that’s before you put the dualsport kit on. So maybe it’s just about 10lbs. I think taking emissions stuff off on the RL would have been even it out.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому

      The X will always be a little lighter since it doesn’t have a urethane-filled swing arm, extended rear subframe, fan and extra wiring harness. The Tusk dual-sport kit added ~3.5 lbs including the license plate.

    Why did you buy a 450 if you are going to ride so slow? A 250 would have been more than enough. Sounds like you are lugging the motor and need to downshift in almost every offroad video clip.

    • @fynn8252
      @fynn8252  Рік тому +2

      I bought a 450 with the intention of riding it as a dual-sport and having the low down grunt. The extra power on the street was important to me. I always rode a gear high on the trails to mellow out the power since it was too abrupt at times, especially on singletrack. As time went on, I began doing less dual-sport trips and mainly focused on trail riding. So the 450 was really overkill in my situation. I looked into other options and eventually settled with a WR250F. Much better bike for the trails imo!
