This super rare 'Charcoal Frost Metallic' custom color twelve-string guitar weighs just 8.40 lbs. and has a nut width of just over 1 5/8 inches, a very comfortable medium neck profile and a scale length of 25 1/2 inches. Solid alder body, maple neck, and veneer rosewood fretboard with 21 frets and inlaid pearl dot position markers. "Hockey-stick" headstock in matching Charcoal Frost Metallic. Headstock decal with Fender logo in gold with black trim, with "ELECTRIC XII" in black below it, and "PAT. 3,143,028 2,960,900 & DES. 186,826" in black in two lines below that. One eight-hole "bracket" string guide. Six-on-a-side Fender "F" tuners with octagonal metal buttons. Four-bolt neck plate with large Fender backward "F" logo and with serial number "170883" between the top two screws. The neck is dated "12 APR 66 B" and the pots are dated "304 66 17" (Stackpole, April 1966). Two powerful black split single-coil pickups with outputs of 8.82k and 8.38k. Three-layer (white/black/white) plastic pickguard with seventeen screws. Two controls (one volume, one tone) and jack socket, all on metal plate adjoining pickguard, plus one four-way rotary selector switch on pickguard. Black plastic knobs with white numbering and silver tops. Fender twelve-saddle combined bridge/tailpiece. There are two 'additional' screws and washers on the face of the body just below the tailpiece. The screwholes are exactly 6 1/4 inches apart and have original 'Fender' screws and washers. We cannot explain why these were fitted - but what we can say, is that from a 1988 photograph (included) of this guitar - we can see that they were certainly there at that time (1988) and quite possibly from the factory in 1966. There are a couple of miniscule surface chips on the treble edge of the body but this super rare custom color twelve-string is still in as near mint (9.25) condition as one could ever wish for. Housed in its original Fender black hardshell case with black leather ends and orange plush lining (9.00).
I like watching your demos . You always seem to be having a good time doing them. You always put me in a good mood anyway.
same :)
God I wish fender would reissue these
Agree, including the Bass V.
Yeah man, that would be awesome
magradygrind best way to do it
Would be a test run Squier version first or cheap fender
Ask Fender Custom Shop. I'm sure they'll make a reissue, but I'm sure you wouldn't afford it.
magradygrind : why?
I've seen charcoal frost metallic finish before!! I sprayed a bass guitar that colour ;D
damn dude this guitar has a unique tone to it. its got a dazzlly jangle
he should play the byrds when he has a 12 string . Or the Smiths. something besides day tripper and hard day's night
This guitar is the one model I wish Fender would reissue.
I used to own one years ago and have never played or heard an electric 12 that comes close to this. It's a combo of the unique bridge, pups, switching, and neck that makes this model go from sweet to aggressive by simply altering your pick attack. No Rickenbacker even comes close.
Also, FYI, this model was the last new design by Leo Fender before selling the company.
Hole in the Sky Sounds insane!
am i the only one who thought "Hole in the Sky" sounded awsome on this?
1) neck, 2) both (series), 3) bridge, 4) both (parallel)
1:37 Oh my Gosh, "Closer to the Heart" never sounded so amazing....
Not sure if it's true or not,but I heard Dominican Bachata artist Anthony Santos either used one of these or various Fenders, in the studio, if you guys have no idea who I'm talking about, look him up, you won't regret it
Sweet - this guitar and the AC-30 were made for each other.
In the "way down inside" part there was just some bleed through. It didn't burn through the tape, the instrument microphones just picked up some of the vocals from another vocal take. It was actually when Plant sung "woman". The "echo" that you hear after he sings "woman" is from another vocal take. They couldn't re-record it any more so they left it there and added some delay to that part.
I've seen you get really excited before, man, but never like this!!! It's the 12 string, man.
Oh my god! I have that guitar drawed as my desktop wallpaper (vintage guitar mag). I thought it was a an invention, but here it is, and it sounds so cool!
Sure I may not be a Fender connoisseur, nor have I ever been much of a Fender fan besides having seen it all over the place as a kid, but that is maybe the best sounding Fender I've heard so far. Nice.
I wanna be friends with this guy so bad
@kycher9dlo it was the last guitar we did in this session, so sit tight it is coming soon I promise!!
Yes! Phil X played my recommendation! (Heartbreaker) Huge thanks to Phil! Even though it was short, it sounded amazing on a 12-string.
Triumph is an iconic band. Love them, and Phil is awesome!!
this guy is loving life! .Rock on bro and great demo!
The flame on that yellowish les Paul on the right is unreal
Phil X rocked with Bon Jovi in Bucharest a couple of summers ago, legendary concert! At least for Romanian Bon Jovi fans!
The 12 is made for you. There is a lot of chop when you play that AX.
this guy is having the time of his life
Johnny winter play this guitar in vintage sunburst on the woodstock ! Ohh Yeeaaahhh
2:06 I can't stop laughing.
That's funny. I just got one of these guitars this week and the first two things I played on it were Closer to the Heart and More Than a Feeling. Awesome guitars and I highly recommend you get one if you have an extra 5 G's sitting around.
@MindGardenSweden no, we don't have any in our inventory at the moment.
That last position was probably the two pickups out of phase. I have my Strat rigged up for some out of phase settings. Love for Phil to demo my guitar (except the neck sucks)
+Paulo Werneck It's 'More Than a Feeling' by Boston
@SolidShroom yes we do...
Thank you SO much Dustin!!!!!
7:04 HOLE HEARTED! Love it! Wish there was more of it!
Phil plays Rush alot. It sounded great on this guitar. But he forgot about the other Canadian band Triumph. Magic Power would sound awesome on this guitar.
Ohhhh Hole in the sky sounds AWESOME on a 12 strings !
Holy cow! He played with Aldo Nova? That's really cool!
beauty of a guitar. Wish I could play right handed sometimes (lord knows I've tried) just to really be able to play a guitar like this.
what makes this more awesome is i got my first 12 string today haha :P
This guitar sounds incredible.
If you are curious,
the first position is the neck pickup,
the second is both pickups in series,
third is both parallel
en last but noth least, the forth position is bridge only
cheers.
I looked up on the site, they still have this guitar. Why hasn't anyone picked it up yet? It's only like 9000$. Good price in my opinion.
That one "ding" really matched the tone ;)
@Ramones1234100 you're welcome!!
You're cracking me up beltin' those high vocal parts while diggin' into that XII ! You give a detailed description of the belly fiddle but could you tell me what the total length measures & the width of the upper & lower bouts ? Those screws in the body you wrote about appear in other photos of the Electric XII I've seen but other photos do not have them, don't know why but must be something they did at the factory during the production run.
i love when phil plays songs i know, us youngsters!
Can anyone tell me what those two screws in the body are for, spread out below the bridge? They're just kinda there.
great sounding guitar, cheers phil
Sweet playing
Thanks again Phil!!
Great Videos, Always! 💥👌RUSH 😎
This sounds SOOO good.
i was looking 12 string guitar videos and i just saw this vid title and i thougt "Who could make a 12 string guitar sings like Phil X? nobody" and here i am
Phil, great as always. Love it when you cant figure it out and go back to whole lotta love...
hilarious
Have you tried the Danelectro 12 string? Either solid or semi-hollow (I have the latter). Easy to play and great tone...sounds like this Fender XII. I have a Rickenbacker 330-12 and I think I like the Dano more. Phil X is delightful, as usual, but perhaps not the best guitarist to demo a Fender Electric XII, although it was interesting to hear hard songs played through the Magnatone AS IF this was a regular electric six string. But the charm of the 12 string is in picking strings, not pounding power chords. Never the less, I DID watch it all.
thats some nice clean tone
I like the sound, it sounds chorused. Also, the middle two positions are both pickups in parallel and series, although I'm not sure which is which.
Sounds terrific !
Hole in the Sky, that was awesome!!!
Man, that thing kicks ass
The funny thing is that Phil chose not to play any Zeppelin songs that were actually recorded with the Fender Electric XII..."Living Loving Maid (She's Just A Woman)" was recorded with the Vox Phantom electric 12-string. "Stairway To Heaven", "When The Levee Breaks" and "The Song Remains The Same" were all recorded using the Fender XII and yet he didn't play any of those songs:) I love Phil though...the guy is really talented and hilarious-he just doesn't give a fuck!
can you play the song "de musica ligera"? the song its played with this guitar. sorry for my bad english thank you
CRAZY sound!
neck, neck & bridge in series, neck & bridge in parallel and bridge are the options :), though i would have liked to see some really tricky stuff like using the neck high 3 and bridge low 3 or some other elaborate wiring. From what i read, they are actually all separate coils, so theoretically it could be done.
WOW PHIL! I am totally blown away with the combination of your skill and the sound of that really sweet guitar! You should explore that 12 string sound more because it sounds like your on to something really sweet with that 12 string guitar there. When I heard you play "Hole In The Sky" I could hear a new sound you could usher in like Jimi Hendrix did with the 'excessive' overdrive sound. Listen to it again with an open mind and hear what I heard... Amazing sounds dude! You Rock(ed)!!!
According to the Elextric XII Wiki page:
The Electric XII used a unique split pickup design and had a 4 way pickup selector allowing for neck, neck & bridge in series, neck & bridge in parallel and bridge only options. It also used a string-through-body design similar to a Telecaster to help increase sustain.
Those bolts on the bridge aren't stock though, so I've no idea what they're for. :/
@oeknoek It looks like their Gibson Les Paul Deluxe from 1973 (Product ID: 1086). The finish is tobacco sunburst and it has mini humbuckers.
What no AC DC? You could pull off Love Song on that puppy,,,,,,lol! Keep the vids coming. Love your talent and charisma.
That guitar sounds positively huge.
Hi Phil! Hi frettedamericana rockin' guys! THUMBZ UP if you'd like Phil to show us the setup on his Bad Monkey and maybe - just maybe! - on the Vox! Kepp it rollin man!
[a fan from Romania(Europe, that is!)]
Ultimate-your probably correct, I was actually thinking of an article about Pink Floyd where One was used on Wish You Were Here.
I didn't think you were serious, but damn, wikipedia ain't lying
In the studio it was the electric XII, live the 1275.
F... best review EVER!!! Love it.
@jakblade3 Song is "Hole Hearted", by Extreme. (album "Pornograffiti" released in 1990)
Love this guitar
I would have liked to have heard it through a Twin, Showman, perhaps even a Super.. Maybe with a reverb tank.
Phil's Hole Int the sky version is the best cover on youtube!
hey frettedamericana! you guys should look around for a sparkle jet, if you dont have one already, and get phil x to do a video of it!
you know Phil was IN Triumph right??
Say swear to God
Best. Fender. Ever.
this thing sounds amazing
Whole lot of love is my favourite Led Zep song... But i like it better with Phil X!!
@Glockenator HA HA Only once when the sinister Hole in the Sky popped on!!!!
I can only begin to imagine how many times Dusty had to change his pants.
This guy rocks!~
I just need the pick ups and that bridge!
Zeppelin is even more awesome when you do it Phil!
I really want Phil to demo the Les Paul deluxe between the bigsby 335 and the pelham melody maker.
I actually really dig the sabbath tone on this guitar. Nice octave effect.
This guy reminds me of Nigel Tufnel, and I mean that in a really good way!
I've been poking around online, I think the 4 way selector does this:
neck, neck/bridge series, neck/bridge parallel, bridge
not sure if that is the right order, or if it's correct at all
this man drinks too much coffee in the morning
Interesting! I have a beat up Hondo Explorer garage sale find that I am planning a major bastardizationon to a 12 string.
Sweet...can't believe he didn't play Livin Lovin Maid
Boogiewoogie did you watch the video??
@frettedamericana How about duo sonics? yes, NOW GET PHIL TO THE SHOP AND MAKE HIM PLAY IT!!!!!!!!!!
i would love to hear jimi hendrix played on a 12 string ...
He did actually. And acoustic tho
Here it is!
ua-cam.com/video/P701paKEMXs/v-deo.html
ROCK ON DUDE!
@forshigity5000 I agree. This is the only demo of this guitar on UA-cam that I can find and he doesn't know how the pickup selector goes. You'd think he'd put in more than a second of research on a legendary guitar like this, but noooo.
I still want to see that crazy flamed Les Paul up high on the right!
And how come after all this time not a single Explorer??
