  • How I replaced the rusty old harddisk in my Amiga 1200 with a new Compact Flash card in an adapter. I prepared and partitioned it and installed Workbench 3.1 on it via WinUAE and a card reader.
    I basically followed the tutorial here (with some slight changes): brotkasten.blog
    This is the CF to 44pin IDE adapter I used (there are many similar ones that do also work): www.reichelt.de/Kartenleser-u...
    The Amiga emulator I used is WinUAE: www.winuae.net
    You can get the Kickstart ROMs and Amiga Workbench here: www.amigaforever.com
    If you get error messages when trying to write to the drive, try starting WinUAE with the parameter -disableharddrivesecuritycheck.
    Thanks to Tinker Time Electronics for making a tutorial on how to use the screen capturing software OBS studio: / channel

    I looked at brotkasten.blog and there's an option there to "Translate this article." So, it's a great resource that is very accessible to many of the non German-speaking audience. Thanks for this video and for mentioning another great retro resource.

      By the way, if one uses Google Chrome, it also prompts one to translate if it detects a web page in another language

    I’ve not actually tried it on FS-UAE, I must try and see how it is. especially since I use OS X mainly.
    Great video and exciting times for you ahead :o)

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому +2

      Thanks so much! I'm a huge fan of your channel. :) FS-UAE excludes the setting to add a real harddrive. You have to edit the settings manually. Quite complicated and I couldn't get it to work after a lot fiddling around. I blame my cheap USB card reader, though. Let me know if you have any success, I'm using OSX as my main system as well so that would be very handy. ;)

    • @brostenen
      @brostenen 7 років тому

      MsMadLemon I did it on FS-UAE on xubuntu 16.10 this month. First you need to edit the UAE configuration file and add the apropriate device. Secondly you need to set the owner for the usb drive to that of the one you are logged in as. It will revert every time you unplug the usb device. Then you need to remove every partitions on the harddrive or cf card that you will use in the amiga, using disk management in Linux. Diskpart on Windows basically does the exact same thing as any other partition managers. People just make it sound that diskpart somehow has some magical powers. Yeah... Its just MS that did a shitty job on the gui version in every releases of windows ever. Even msdos fdisk are better.
      I can see that I forgot to add the config file's information, that I created for an Amiga600 CF card setup under Linux. I think it will be the exact same thing on OsX, as it shares same traits as Linux.
      # FS-UAE configuration saved by FS-UAE Launcher
      # Last saved: 2017-07-12 23:00:44
      [fs-uae]
      amiga_model = A600
      cpu = 68EC020
      floppy_drive_count = 4
      hard_drive_0 = /dev/sdb
      hard_drive_0_controller = ide0
      hard_drive_0_type = rdb
      hard_drive_1 = /home/john/Skrivebord/Amiga/transfer
      kickstart_file = Kickstart v2.05 rev 37.350 (1992)(Commodore)(A600HD)[!].rom
      I only have to run this command, each time I connect the CF card, as the settings for ownership will revert to the System and not me as an owner, wich I am setting each time from command line.
      "sudo chown john /dev/sdb"
      Happy testing Jan..... ;-)

    Very helpful video, thanks! I'm currently waiting on my A500 accelerator to arrive, so making a start setting the CF up in the meantime with WinUAE. Quick question: You created a second (DH1) partition which was the remaining disk allocation and formatted this is a label of 'Data'. I noticed this seemed to display fine in WinUAE, but when you booted your A1200 the partition showed up as 'NDOS'. Did this ever work, and did you have to format this partition again on the real Amiga?
    I wanted to make a start bringing over OctaMED samples and setting WHDLoad, but obviously this will be a waste of time if I have to format again on the Amiga as soon as I have IDE capability.

    The CF card does not show up in Winuae after the card has been cleaned. I select the card and when I get to the hard drive preparation section is no hd/cf card listed and every option is greyed out except help and exit. Does anyone have a clue as to why??? EDIT: After "clean" I had to type "create partition primary" then it worked.

    • @JanBeta

      Das funktioniert auch auf einem 1200er. Das Problem ist nur, dass du unter Umständen auf dem echten Amiga erst auf die CF Karte zugreifen kannst, wenn sie nicht mehr im FAT Format (vor)formatiert ist (genau so wie im Emulator). Im Grunde mache ich die anderen Schritte nur im Emulator, weil ich so schnelleren Zugriff auf ADFs und Dateien habe und nicht auf reale Disketten angewiesen bin.

      Yes, it most likely will work the same. Make sure to use the right version of Workbench though (depending on the Kickstart version in the computer some may not work). If you want to make absolutely sure it works, I recommend getting a 3.1 Kickstart ROM for the A600.

  • @DigitalXAQ
    @DigitalXAQ 7 років тому

    Quick query and hopefully you can help. I tried installing WB 3.1 on my 1200, With the HDD and with a 4GB flash card using WinUAE, both failed, I've been through hell and back trying to get it to work but no dice. Now I can get to the workbench grey/blue screen with Ramdisk etc showing but when I put a game in the icon will be "DF0:????" My locale, fonts discs show up normally, but system and install disks shows DF0:???? it worked fine before with games as I was playing Roadkill, Top Gear 2 etc.. What on earth have I done wrong and how do I fix this?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      I think everything's fine. Most Amiga games come on non-AmigaDOS disks and can't be read from the Workbench so they show as ???? (or NDOS on older WB versions). When you reset the Amiga and boot from the disks they should work. The bootloader on the disk handles the special format then.

    • @DigitalXAQ
      @DigitalXAQ 7 років тому

      I see thank you, my keyboard has a few keys missing so trying to find the reset keys is a pain sometimes! But I have done it before.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      +DigitalXAQ You can also put in the disk you want to load before you turn the power on. The Amiga will then try to boot from disk first and from the harddisk/CF second. :)

    Hi Jan,
    So was ähnliches habe ich auch gemacht. Allerdings habe ich mir einen PCMCI auf Compact Flash Adapter für den Amiga 1200 geholt. Die IDE Variante fiel bei mir raus, da ich einen IDEFIX Kontroller (2,5" IDE auf 2x 3,5 IDE) verbaut habe und diesen weiter benutzen möchte.
    Ich habe bei mir festgestellt, das dieser Adapter nicht funktioniert.
    Meine Vermutung es liegt an den orignalen SMD Caps, die ich jetzt demnächst austauschen muss.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  5 років тому

      Es kann auch sein, dass die PCMCIA-Karte nicht kompatibel ist, die du benutzt. Der PCMCIA-Port am Amiga erfüllt nicht in vollem Umfang alle Funktionen, weil der Standard damals noch nicht voll definiert war. Um die CF-Karten von Amigaseite nutzen zu können, brauchst du außerdem einen Treiber.

    I have an A1200 I'm going to restore - its the same A1200/40 (same hdd even) but its the US/NTSC model. Sadly its previous owner drove screws through the top of the case - ruining the case :( - its also missing the metal cover inside.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому +2

      +SkuldChan42 The metal cover is a pretty useless RF shield so I wouldn't worry about that. If you need a new case, there was a Kickstarter some time ago with very nice cases they'll probably put on sale soon. Check out www.a1200.net :)

      @SkuldChan42 7 років тому

      Cool - yeah supposedly I have a case coming (I joined the kickstarter campaign), but alas - I don't think anyone in the US has received them.
      One note about your CF install process - I found that in doing it - I had to start WinUAE as local admin before Amiga DOS would let me configure the locally plugged in CF card.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Oh, hope your case arrives soon. I think they only just finished actually producing them? Good to know that you had to run WinUAE as an admin. I just had to click on it (although I don't really know if there's some default in Win10 I activated - not a Windows guy mostly).

    • @SkuldChan42
      @SkuldChan42 7 років тому

      It could have been my system I guess - it let me pick the CF card, but then didn't show up in HD Toolbox, but after forcing WinUAE to run as admin it all worked like a top. The good news is that once I did that - I was able to install Amiga DOS and it worked on my A4000 :). I did buy enough parts to install this on my A1200 as well - once it's put back together.

    it's an AMIGA, you dont need nor care about so called (windows/linux partition tables) system/data partitions, nor care about only having upto 4 active partitions... the AMIGA can have any amount of so called active partitions and you can access them all as the required boot drive of your choice by holding down your right/left mouse buttons on boot up, also on a real AMIGA you can have a real reentrant RAM disk that actually retains the contents on a warm reboot etc...
    as an aside, remember that it's IDE so you can add in another second IDE drive and just set the master and slave jumpers on the units so as not to clash and so stop working and then add another IDE connector on the same cable to connect them...

  • @HansCampbell

    Jan, after you delete the partitions on the Compact Flash card, have you ever tried prepping and formatting it on a real Amiga computer? This would be a video that many Amiga users would like to see. You should NOT have to use WinUAE to prep and format a Compact Flash card. If this is the case, then Compact Flash cards do NOT really work with Amiga computers. When I say Amiga computers, I am talking about the real Amiga computers, like the Amiga 1000, 2000, and 500. I am not talking about the Amiga clones, like the Amiga 4000 and 1200. I installed a 20th Anniversary Buddha IDE board into one of my Amiga 2000 computers. IDE hard drives work great and show up in HDTools, but, I can not get any Compact Flash cards to show up in HDTools. I think it is because CF cards are set up at the factory as removable devices, and the Buddha IDE does not like this. I know there is a way to set CF cards to FIXED. Only then will HDTools "see" the CF cards, and prep and format them on a real Amiga. FUCK WinUAE !

    Never got this to work... might be outdated? I did basically this but with some more steps and that worked, here's the link: www.everythingamiga.com/2018/03/how-to-setup-an-amiga-compact-flash-drive-using-winuae.html
