  • This is a step by step guide to setting up Classic Workbench and WHDLoad games on a 4gb CF Card for use on a real Amiga. These are the basic steps to get you up and running, should be easy to follow for a novice user.
    There are more advanced settings and file systems that can be used however I wanted to keep the guide as simple as possible for Amiga users returning to the scene.
    I hope this helps :)

    Fantastic. Worked first time for me. I used an 8gb card and made a dh2, dh3, dh4 and called them games1 games2 games3 and spread the games pack across the 2gb partitions. 9 directories for each drive. Awesome tutorial. Thank you.

    I know this is an old video, but I wanted to thank you for making an easy to understand step-by-step video. I spent the weekend scouring through outdated, unclear videos when I finally found yours in an EAB thread this morning. Gave it a shot, now have Classic WB installed on my 500+/030. Cheers!

    Hi Fitzsteve - first of all, I'd like to thank you for this great video about the basic steps for installing WB3.1. I had difficulties to use my brand new Sandisk Ultra 8 GB cards on my ACA500+ as always dropped a write error - but thankfully, I was able to continue the process. It's a great tutorial.

    This is what I love about the Amiga systems, they were future proof. I have an Atari 1040STf with a built in Hard Disk that I can not do anything like this to because Atari opted to use SCSI like Apple did...and it's not cheap to do anything like this with SCSI.

      Fundamentally nothing has changed this will still work on your Amiga, although there have been new versions of Workbench since which require updated Roms but it still works in very much the same way.

    Hi! Thanks for the kind comment :) I was lucky not to have any issues with either my ACA1220 or ACA1232 however it can be a bit of a lottery, good news is Amigakit can do the timing fixes if you need them. Also my A1200's have had the Caps replaced and I'm using an ATX PSU converted for the Amiga, this really helps too for a stable system.

    True, for a system where it is written once and read lots of times, then go CF, but if you have the hardware in your system to do it, then have the CF card in the system for games, and a physical HDD for productivity. Easy for like an A4000, maybe not for an A1200 :).

    Excellent tutorial, made installation pretty straightforward, thank you! Now all I have to do is find out why the A1200 refuses to boot with all 8mb of fast RAM enabled but is perfectly happy when configured for 4mb..........these things do come along to try us :-)

    • @fitzsteve
      @fitzsteve  9 років тому

      Tim Marshall Glad the tut was useful :) Do you have anything plugged into the PCMCIA slot? If so you need to remove it to use all 8mb, or if you have an Amitek Hawk Ram board this is a known issue, for some reason Classic Workbench does not seem to work with this board in the 8mb configuration. I was never able to work out why.

    • @tim7099
      @tim7099 9 років тому

      fitzsteve Hi Steve, I still have the 3.0 ROM so PCMCIA slot works fine with a normal HD (IBM 855mb) WB3.1 and 8mb but, refuses to boot with CWB and 8mb (load gets far enough for the anti click to kick in then stops). I presume that it's a Hawk, it looks like the ones shown on various posts, although one piece of software reported it as an Apollo.....Badge engineering? The 8 meg configuration wasn't trouble free even with the 2.5" drive. Each time a game was loaded in WHD I got a yellow recoverable alert, (press left mouse button to continue) but the game loaded normally after that. I guess that I will just have to put up with 4mb. I seem to recall having a problem with an accelerator board (030/25) putting the PCMCIA slot out of use back in the day and had to fiddle around with a long IDE cable to get my PCMCIA HD working. Some things don't change :-) Anyway, thanks for this and your other interesting videos!

    Classic Workbench already includes the Compact Flash Device and Fat95 driver, you only need to type in CLI 'Mount CF0:' or move the file CF0 from Storage/DosDrivers to Devs/DosDrivers. Maybe you chose an install without the theme? You can add a wallpaper/backdrop by right clicking on the Workbench Bar & choose Scalos>Pattern :)

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    Hi! Max transfer probably isn't an issue with UAE's scsi.device, the scsi.device on the Amiga isn't compatible with modern ATA specs so that's why we have to limit the size of the data chunks, you wont notice any problems until you try to load a large file, they you will have corruptions.
    If you setup the CF correctly in WinUAE there is no reason you will have issues on the Amiga :)

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    It can be quite complicated to get WinUAE to recognise the CF Card and allow you to partition it under emulation as Windows & WinUAE protect you from overwriting system (OS) drives. It's much easier to put an RDB in the CF card first and then WinUAE will let you do what you like with it!
    Classic Workbench needs to be activated first before you can use it, all the files are inside the HDF. It is possible to copy the contents of the HDF straight to your CF card and then activate with real Disks.

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    Yes indeed, it is the same for all types of drives however bare in mind you need to patch the scsi.device for drives over 4gb (see Classic Workbench tutorials on the CWB website) and you also need to install a fie system like SFS or PFS3, I'm hoping to a guide on that soon!

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    Hi,
    You can use either Full or Lite as long as you have 3.1Rom (or use the ACA Maprom to load 3.1Rom)
    Full uses Scalos and Lite does not, depends if you want Scalos, it will be a little bit slower an use more Ram but you get IGame + screenshots pack :)

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    Hi! You need to have minimum 37.300 Rom (you can see in the Kickstart Screen the version you have) you also need at least a trapdoor 1mb upgrade to run WHDLoad and some Fast Ram (PCMCIA SRAM) 2 or 4mb is recommended. Kipper2k at EAB & Amibay sells 4mb Fast Ram that clips over the CPU, well worth a look at too! The version of Classic Workbench for the A600 with 2.0 Roms is called GAAE :)

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    I agree if you're doing work that intensively writes to the CF card you're better off with a real mechanical HD as CF cards have limited writes. I'm not so sure you're better off with an old 6gb HDD though, I've had a few and they all died quickly.
    I tend to use CF's in my wedge Amiga's due to their low power consumption and low heat, I don't aggressively use these systems. I stick with real HDD's in my big box Amiga's, I bought a job lot of new old stock 20gb Seagate IDE HDD's a while back :)

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    Hi John K, Indeed you can setup an 8gb CF with 5 partitions but you must use another file system such as SFS or PFS3. I have used 8gb Kingston CF's, they worked fine but were not compatible with OS3.9 BB2's SCSI Update so I had to add the 'Skipromupdates "scsi.device' command, if you are using WB3.1 this isn't an issue :)

    Great guide. One thing I noticed is that when I partitioned my 4Gb card the Amiga initially didn't see the two big partitions to be able to format them (I think they ended up around 1640Mb each), but when running ClassicWB DirOpus was able to see and format them no problem
    Now to copy all those WHDLoad games over.
    One question for those who know these CF card set ups well, once you have done one, can you do a 100% duplicate on to another card without going through all the set up stuff on a real Amiga? Basically cloning the card.

  • @fitzsteve
    @fitzsteve  11 років тому

    Hi Guys, thanks for the comments. I've been considering a guide for 8gb guides but it seems there are a lot of variables depending on file system used as some brands seem to be incompatible with certain file systems and require further patching, it can get a bit complex and I'm not sure I can cover all eventualities, a guide could end up causing further frustration. I think it's better to read the documentation for SFS and PFS3 for anyone who would like to experiment with larger CF's/HDD's.

    Hi, I've been following the tutorial, but DH1 and DH2 wont show up on the workbench screen, only DH0. I've partitioned the drive now for the 7th time and still no DH1 or DH2. I don't have anything connected to the expansion ports, since when I plug my 8mb ram in the HDD won't show up. I have Kickstart 3.0 could this be what causes the problem? I've tried it with WB 3.0 and 3.1 but the other partitions (except DH0) wont show up. Also my A1200 wont read all disks only some like the Workbench disks (I use a floppy drive emulator). If anyone knows whats going on with my A1200 please tell me.

If I go to drawers > add game first it, has an error message about not finding a menu file, and gives an option to create one, which I do, then it continues. however when i run classicwb.hdf if boots to the desktop of classicwb not an install screen like what shows here.
    if i say run real install.adf of classicwb with my cf mounted it says cannot find system.zip in dh0.
    if i make the files into system.zip on dh0 and then do it it unpacks the zip and then stops half way and says dh0 is write protected! ive followed steps exactly too. read/write selected. etc :( totally stumped!

    Steve, I just have one question.
    Can you elaborate on copying kickstarts.lha , which contains things like kick33180.a500 and kick33180.a500.rtb ? I own Amiga Forever, so can I just copy various .rom files from \Amiga Files\Shared

    Quick query and hopefully you can help. I tried installing WB 3.1 on my 1200, With the HDD and with a 4GB flash card using WinUAE, both failed, I've been through hell and back trying to get it to work but no dice. Now I can get to the workbench grey/blue screen with Ramdisk etc showing but when I put a game in the icon will be "DF0:????" My locale, fonts discs show up normally, but system and install disks shows DF0:???? it worked fine before with games as I was playing Roadkill, Top Gear 2 etc.. What on earth have I done wrong and how do I fix this? Dying floppy drive, HDD etc? | have a gotek emulator which works thankfully..

    Hi Steve. I have a weird issue about whdload games. Some games (shadow of the beast 3 for instance) freezes in real A1200 when i press the "F" buttons (F1, F2 for changing items). But in WinUAE, the same setup works fine with no freezes. I use A1200 Escom edition with blizzard 1230. As I understand it is either a matter of amiga hardware or it has to do with some codelines in whdload. I read somewhere about NOCACHE and NOMMU code lines that are put in the icon of the game. Do you have any idea about that? Thank you

    Great tutorial. I have, however, a problem setting up three partitions on a 4GB flashcard. The partitioning goes fine, I have set MaxTransfer to 0x1FE00 (confirmed with enter), named the partitions DH0 (~200MB), DH1, and DH2 (~1800MB each). When I reboot, only DH0 and DH1 show up. This happens with 2 different 4GB CF cards, on a real A1200 and in WinUAE. Any thoughts why this happens?

      I found this on Ebay just now, get 1 of these but make sure it is suitable for your country, ie PAL/NTSC.
      www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Commodore-Amiga-A500-A600-A1200-2mtr-GOLD-PLATED-RGB-Scart-TV-Cable-Video-Lead-/250786119867
      I am UK so I will need PAL, maybe they work on all countries but you should contact them and ask.
      If your TV does not have SCART on the back then buy one of these.
      www.amazon.co.uk/SCART-HDMI-converter-convert-connect-x/dp/B0092IAA3I
      I already have one of these converters as I used it with my Playstation 1, PS1 scart to converter and then HDMI out from converter to HD PVR2 and I was able to record in HD, worked wonders for the picture quality as well.
      Let me know if you solved it.

      Hi, this is the product you need for HDMI on your A1200, it's quite expensive but gives you digital image quality. The Scart Lead linked is a nice solution and cost effective as long as your TV supports RGB-Scart then it's a good option. • @fitzsteve
      @fitzsteve  10 років тому

      Thanks! You can only browse inside archives via DOpus on CWB Full and above, if you are using lower versions you need to extract the contents to view/manage them. I usually extract to Ram Disk and work with my files there, of course they will be gone after re-boot so if you want to keep them you need to save a copy somewhere.

    • @fitzsteve
      @fitzsteve  10 років тому

      Hi!
      Yeah 16gb is massive for an Amiga, the whole WHDLoad Games pack is about 5.5gb, take out the AGA/CD32 Games that you wont use on your ECS Amiga and it's nearer 4.5gb. Add CD games, Demos, other stuff and you will still struggle to even fill 10gb :)
      I have 2x 8gb CF on my A1200 and have about 4gb free and I have a massive collection of MOD Music on there too as well as MacOS (ShaeShifter and big HDF's)

    • @fitzsteve
      @fitzsteve  10 років тому

      Hi! Yes you can do the install on WINUAE using ADF's, you might need to use a Windows tool called Diskpart to clear off any windows boot record on your CF before WinUAE will let you use it, be careful as you can accidentally wipe the wrong drive!
