Paintings irl don’t all have one style, I don’t know why it should be a problem for Minecraft paintings to have different styles.
thats honestly a really good point never thought about it that way
Real life is also not a video game.
Shocking, i know.
Games should have a somewhat consistent aesthetic, and these new paintings do not fit at all. Some minor variation in style is fine as long as it's not too glaring, but this looks completely different.
I think the issue is that the old style has been an enduring legacy. The moment the game includes more genre pieces, the easier it is for the public to accept the diversity.

Unlike the texture update, the new paintings don’t replace anything and are entirely optional, therefore I’d think it be rather dumb if people genuinely complained over this.
It's Minecraft. People will complain over anything.
We can't all be winners. It's sad but no matter what there will always be someone who doesn't agree with others. They just want to be negative for the sake of it
The texture update is also entirely optional, go to your resource packs tab in game and turn on programmer art, everyone has it automatically installed and it reverts the textures back to the old ones
@@Feathered_Crow i dont think people are being negative for the sake of it, minecraft HAD a style, but since they decided to go in a different direction its been getting all messed up. i dont mind if they go more modern, but they keep things that ARENT, making it all incoherent. even if i love the old paintings, they should have redone them, or kept minecraft in its old style.

They need to introduce 3x2 or 5x3, etc. paintings. Large paintings with a 1 block centre would make integrating them into your build a lot easier
Paintings in multiple styles is a good thing. If you went to a museum, would you expect every painting to be done in pointillism? Or for every painting to look like it was done like Jackson Pollock? No. I hope they add even more styles to the paintings in future updates
They should have many different artists in the game. Instead of a mob vote next live we should have an artist submission and we rank our favorite paintings where the top 10, 20, or however many get added into the game.
This would cause so many differing issues
@@tumultuousv how so? If you don’t mind explaining.
It's definitely a bold move for them to add new paintings, but I think making bold moves is the way forward, like when they updated all the textures.
I agree! This seems to be a general theme of this update, looking at the NBT to Component changes and the Crafter, and I'm so happy with it

I like what terraria does where the community can sometimes add paintings, each one having their own style. Also I like how you can collect individual paintings.
I like that they’re doing this. It paves the way for more artists to be incorporated into the game in a way that doesn’t water down what’s already there. Using pack.png was a great call because that will get a lot of people on board with adding new paintings. Similar to how there are new disks from a new artist, which are aided by being absolute bops.
1:24 The person riding on the horse actually looks Iike Noor, one of the 7 new default skins included in Bedrock Edition alongside Steve & Alex.

@@Chris_Cross Microcok I mean Mojang after adding a transracial fat disabled nonbinary transspecies transgender disabled villager skin to a game about fucking blocks:
I don't even know the names of those guys
tbh i think the 7 skins are poorly designed they dont really fit with the theme that most of the humanoid characters have who have less of a modern feel
As long as they don't replace any of the old paintings, I don't think trying out new styles is a problem. Some like them, some don't
Totally. I was going to write a comment about not liking the painting with the villagers, and then I realized the worst that can happen is that it will just take a little longer to get the painting I want in survival. Nobody's forcing these new paintings on anyone, they're just here if you want them.
i dont think its a matter of style, but rather content. it makes a lot of sense that a game's custom paintings would reflect the world of the game, but the old paintings often didn't and that was neat. sure you had art like the ones with the pig face, creeper face, or the moonlit minecraft terrain, but they were usually always some nonminecraft aspect to it, like the lady with the pig face, or the creeper staring at you from a difficult to parse windowed background, or the realistic human skull with minecraft flame particles.
i'd much prefer weird stuff like that than paintings that actually _do_ fit the world lore. more weird pixel art characters, more unfitting realism, and in general i'd just be happy with any style that depicts things that very clearly _aren't_ in minecraft.
I like *all* the new paintings. I Much prefer the Softer anti-aliased paintings, as per you can actually *see* what is presented; whereas in the older style only larger ones were clear. ('cept for the kebab and creeper ones, for whatever reason)

their pupils aren't hard to see they are literally bright green
They're hard to see because the painting was likely drawn at a higher resolution and then scaled down. Pixel blending darken the eyes by mixing the white of the eyes with the surrounding pixels of the face.
I think the villager painting is well executes, but it would fit better with kistoffers style if they just downscaled the American Gothic painting and cut out the villager heads, similar to the already existing pig painting

pack.png being in the new paintings is really cool! I'm actually hyped to place it down somewhere. As for the villager painting, It really is very different from most others, And I think it could fit/be less out of place if they added more paintings in the same style, not having it be "the odd one out".

The Wither Painting has been the "odd one out" for a while. Maybe this is them remedying that?
omg that pottery one is one of the best paintings I've ever seen.
prairie ride may be a reference to journey of the prairie king in stardew valley as the artist seems to use the artsyle of that game in other art...
Honestly, I kinda like having multiple art styles represented in the paintings. It’s like each artist leaving their own personal touch on the game in small way. That and endless variations of art styles found in real paintings, I am a fan.
Want more variety? Resourcepack is at your service. The standard visual style should be simple, functional and not distracting. The villagers picture failed.

Mojang should have given that front facing villager a trident to match the vibe of original paintings.
honestly I think the new paintings fit the style of the old ones very well, it's nothing new for paintings to include things from Minecraft, and I think these were well done.
That bedrock hand thing is a new bug. Dont worry peenix.
I like how it references an old version of the villagers like how the original painting is from an old time period.
I really like that they're adding new paintings, I hope they keep this a traditiom with every update, like how every update so far (tho it seems 1.21 is gonna break this in favor of paintings) of adding a brand new music disk in the update (1.16 got Pigstep, 1.17/1.18 got Otherside, 1.19 got Disc 5, and 1.20 got Relic)
The only solution to this is MOAR PAINTINGS! So glad you mentioned American Gothic which is the same thought I had upon seeing it for the first time :P
Someone is definitely going to make a resource pack to make the new paintings fit with the older ones.
VanillaTweaks hopefully
What they should do, is give the loom functionality to change what painting you’re placing.
That would be *so* useful considering you can sit there for ages to get the right painting and what makes it worse is I sometimes break the one I want because I'm so used to the motion of just breaking the wrong ones I hope Mojang adds this or just a way to tell the difference with the item in general
One of the best written videos on UA-cam. Starts the video off by talking about his hand, moves on to paintings and makes us forget about his missing hand, and brings it back at the end. Well done, Phoenix.
I think it makes send that the new paintings have different styles. Even in the real world, art changes over time, and many people have many different styles. I like that Steve is now experimenting with his art, rather than sticking to what he knows.
I don’t think anyone has said this yet, so I will say it here
I belie that the poppy painting is actually a reference to a painting of a rose in a sunset field made by Dali. It looks literally just like it, just that they added a Minecraft flower instead
Tô be honest, it looks more like the old rose (before it got changed into the poppy) which is really nice
definitely understand the opinion of preferring the old style, but the new paintings align much better to the higher detail we're getting throughout the rest of the game

3:14 the old textures and new textures have completely different vibes from each other, the old textures look like they were made in mspaint while the other looks like it was made by a professional artist

Ngl the decorated pot looks like the long lost bundle
I love the little village painting
Plot twist: Bedrock Steve doesn’t have any arms, and has to hold all his items in his mouth

0:58 NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP PHOENIX
I like the fact that new paintings are designed specifically for Minecraft. Older ones were originally oil paintings that look fantastic, but after pixelization in Minecraft became hard to make sense out of
I am so glad that Kristoffer Zetterstrand came back
I think the main issue with the villager painting is the 2 pixel thick eyebrows and eyes. The proportions are all wrong. The nose on a villager is normally 2 pixels wide. So the increase of 2->3 for the nose and 1->2 for the eyes and eyebrows doesn't consistently keep the proportions so the eyes and eyebrows look enormous compared to how they should look.
I personally find that it looks rather different and doesn't align with the current Minecraft paintings. The style just isn't consistent or similar enough, and I do not agree the idea that IRL paintings have different styles so why should it be a problem in Minecraft. Barring some exceptions, the style should be fairly consistent for video games (An extreme example would be a realistic painting placed in Minecraft; It does not fit Minecraft's overall graphic style).
And I can't shake the feeling of something off in the art. Maybe it's because of the tremendous amount of different pixel colors just for a gradient, in which there are multiple, making it look too smooth in my eyes (this is more obvious for the villager painting). Most of the older paintings have a certain roughness to them, and it fits closer to the block textures in which they are similarly rough looking.
A part of minecraft charm is that it is cobbled together from a bunch of very unique voices. The new music, textures, and assets are not bad on their own, but, added to a game like minecraft, they make it more generic.
the 1 by 2 is Mat-Pat on a horse riding into the sunset
2:28 thought that was a dog foot not a match.
Did he just rickroll us by using his minecraft worlds?
I think that they should actually paint the paintings in Minecraft then downscale them just like they did for Zetterstrand's. It would just feel more authentic that way. Multiple of his paintings already featured Minecrafty elements in them which blend in nicely such as Skull on Fire. They could do the same.
