Thanks for the instructions. Since I had my center dash apart, I thought I left a plug loose for fan control... until I found this video. I did the AutoZone part - # LS1144. 30 bucks or so. No major surprises. Keeping the screws straight - which ones go where - is kind of important. Removing the switch from the harness required sliding two locking mechanisms - I missed that in the vid. Thanks for the video. My blower motor became intermittent, then stopped altogether. I had low voltage at the blower motor connector (7.5V) - did some digging and realized that many have had the same issues, but oddly enough relating to the ignition switch modules. I got mine apart (thanks to your video) - and found severe scarring on the top two pins (blower motor). The female blue connector in the dash also was charred in that area, so I was concerned that it would not reconnect solidly when installing the new ignition module. Bought and installed the new module, and it worked, however after a few minutes began to intermittently die off. When adjusting the tilt wheel, I could make it come on and off. Awesome video man!!! Im going to replace mine today!!! I can only imagine how much money and headache you have saved everybody ... keep up the good work
Thanks for the video, it seems to have cleared up the issues I had(blower would turn on when truck was on). There is one thing I would like to note in my experience. I had to take my key and rotate the new ignition switch section where it mates up to the ignition cylinder (not sure of verbiage, hopefully it makes sense). The plastic insert was slightly rotated compared to the switch I pulled out of the truck so the new switch would not mate up to the lock cylinder properly until it was turned.
Excellent. I just replaced it and now AC fan is working. Little worried because the switch didnt show any signs of burn or heated. It did work and thats all that matters. $30. Thanks
I know you made this in 2012, but I have the same exact year truck and the same exact issue. In addition, I went to my truck this morning and found out the batteries were dead. I suspect the switch stayed on and drained them. So I will be replacing this ASAP. One question I have though...What about the key side of things? You didn't explain that at all.
Best instructional video i have seen .. NO BS .. thanks brotha .. I was on the right track and I got a mirrored light. I saw the top wire blackened and thought it might be a good idea to see what "the collective" have experienced. Awesome man ... Will be fixed tomorrow.... Jason
Hey Glen, I would agree the fan could be dragging and causing a higher than normal current draw. However the connector to the ignition switch must be in good shape to rule out that as a possibility. If you look into the terminals and they are charred than they should be replaced. If the wires have burned to a hard crisp just past the connector than its possible it is too crusty to make a clean contact and the entire section should be replaced. OEM cord has plug at each end. Replace bad switch.
Ami problema. Me ayudas. ??
THANKS!!! I almost spent $90.00 on an ignition cylinder thinking that was the problem, due to my wife's 20# keyring. Great job on the video, you are awesome!
Thanks for the instructional video, blower works great now. any suggestions as to why there is no heat on the drivers side but there is on the passenger side, the drivers side just blows cool /cold air 2005 ram 1500
I have an 04 Dodge ram 3500 Laramie with an intermittent blower fan. Lately its not working more than it works. Here in Florida that's bad. I thought for sure the switch was the problem because the recirc door seems to be working (and the problem seems electrical.) The replacement of the switch went just like your video, but it didn't fix the problem. Im going to remove the fan and test for voltage at the fan plug.
I haven't. It's still very intermittent. I leave the blower on and turn off the compressor each time I get in/out of truck. Blower works fine. I've noticed it works again after messing with the blend on the controls. I've read the blend door can come lose and keep the fan from spinning. But I haven't looked into it yet. I suppose with Florida summer coming it will move back up my list in importance
Just installed the ignition switch on my 2004 Ram 2500. Only took about 15 minutes, but I already had the kick panel removed as I had not reinstalled it after diagnosing the problem.
Javier I'm sorry your having this difficulty. There are several components that get the power through the switch you changed. When you removed the switch you probably noticed the burnt wire connector. This could be the problem. That 2 foot section of wire harness is replaceable. It has most likely gone too far (burnt terminals) and the connectors are no longer clean at the ac link. I hope that helps. Good Luck
I have a 2004 1500 5.7 Hemi... I have the exact opposite problem. My fan won't turn off when I turn the key off... Really sucks coming out in the morning and it won't even click! Going to give this a shot.
The short answer is yes. A bad wire harness and or ignition switch could cause the vehicle to fail to start. All contacts to the switch and the switch reeds themselves must be in working order for the various components to function. That includes the starter and the ECM power.
I was able to remove the blue plastic face from the female plug it has 4 catches on the sides and I got a good look at mine. It looked perfect inside. not chard or blackened at all. only the blue plastic was burnt. If the terminal is burnt or the wire than you might want to replace that section of wire harness. I believe its about 20 inches long and plugs into another similar plug down by the pedals.
thanks for posting. i have some what the same problem on my 03 ram 3500 cummins. but its just the 1st speed setting that doesnt work, the rest are fine. i tried what u did by wiggling the key and see if the 1st speed setting would work but it didnt. i bought a whole new controlling unit thinking the old one was worn out and didnt read the contact but that but that didnt do anything. what do you think? replace what you did in this video? or is there maybe something else?
The fan motor can be bad If its a bad motor sometimes it can be jolted into temporarily working by pounding on it with the palm of your hand or a rubber mallet. The plug going to the fan can be melted or over heated. be sure to check it for blackend connectors. Also if the steering column affects the fan motor, there is a short wiring harness from the ignition switch to the main harness that can also have over heated check it for bad contacts as well.
Oh yea, check the resistor wires and resistor that is next to the fan. If all else fails you may have gotten a bad ignition switch out of the box. Or its the fan switch giving you fits. keep us posted. Good Luck
Thank you so much for doing this video. My 2003 was doing the same thing. Watched the video, got the part $28.00 bucks, installed it just like you said and works perfect. Great job and cudo's....... GT

I FIX MY RAM WHIT YOUR VIDEO, THE BLOWER MOTOR WORKS GOOD,BUT, THE AC CLUTCH DOESN'T WORK & BEFORE THIS FAILURE HAVE AN EXCELENT AC... DO YOU HAVE AN IDEA OF THIS? ... AL FUSES, RELAYS & VOLTAGES ARE FINE....
Sorry... couldn't figure out how to edit my post below. I took the fan out and the resistor. They both checked out fine. I cleaned the squirrel cage. I did nothing to the resister. I noticed some burnt junk and fuzz on the blower motor electrical connector. I cleaned that up. Turned the key...its working fine on all speeds. I guess the real test will be towing 8000 lbs through the hot Florida sun or baking in some shadeless parking lot. Also, I also looked at the wire going to the fan, it looks sufficient IMHO: about #10 or #12.
Got an 03 B2500 Van with the same symptoms, and now fan doesn't work at all. Guess I'll try this. Thumb up for the info. Does the radio go through this switch too?
did anyone have theirs where the a/c light stayed on when the blower was in the off position? Normally (when the blower is acting right) my a/c light will turn off when i put the blower in the off position. My blower will randomly come on while driving and usually stay on.
@@stuckinadazzee I just figured mine out. Next time your blower won't come on, tap on the bottom of the blower motor. Its directly under the glove box. Apparently it has connections that once a little corrosion is on them, it just stops . I hit the bottom of mine with a wrench and it kicked on.
@@aceofpace1378 Tapped the blow yesterday and it kicked right back on. Thanks for the tip. I'm pretty sure I replaced the blower motor a few years ago.
My issue: If turn key backwards, none of the aux works. When starting, difficult to get the "sweet spot" to get truck to start. Can remove key from cylinder even if truck running. Question: Would you replace switch, cylinder, or both? Note: 2003 Dodge Ram 3500
Sounds like both but we know the cylinders bad since the key pops out. Then there is the switch which is only 25 dollars so not worth messing with just change it.
Thanks for the reply. Replaced both. Much better. Still a little touchy to turn backwards to get aux things to work (like radio), but resolved 90% of issue. Next issue: Manual transmission. Truck won't start with clutch ALL way down. Instead, I have to move it about 1 inch off the floor in order for the clutch to ready "happy" and the truck to start. Any ideas?
I have same problem on 2003 but when I lift up steering wheel, fan works. It just doesn’t work when it’s in lower position. You think Still need to change switch?
good chance the switch is cooked but the switch is connected to a wiring harness that goes through the column and has a second plug just past the dash coming out of the column this harness needs checked out because it is common to have burnt contacts as well
Help! My 3500 van is getting an engine light, a/c kicking on and off intermittently, along with the blower. Air bag light on and off. If anybody knows please shed some light. I can wiggle wires underneath and cause lights to go on and off. Clues: Clock spring shows continuity, fuses all good. There was an aftermarket gps installed on wires under dash. Took it off. Anybody know?
May be ignition switch. this is a very inexpensive easy to do item that may help and won't hurt to eliminate that as a possibility. Alternatively, Regarding Dodge 3500 vans. The AC/heater (HVAC) system may unexpectedly switch to the defrost mode when accelerating. This system is operated by engine vacuum and should be inspected for any vacuum leaks if this problem develops. There is also a revised vacuum check valve available to address this concern.
My power door locks, and dome lights don't work with the key off only when it's key on. Also my radio doesn't work at all. I checked all fuses. I'm hoping this switch fixes it
Can anyone answer my question ?? What is the black and orange wire for on the ignition harness ?? Mine has went to ground and is blowing fuse number 10 can anyone help ??
I have an 04 ram 1500, with the opposite problem. The blower actually stays on after i turn the car off and remove the key. If i tap on the ignition it will turn off. $30 i think I’ll try this.
Today I turned the AC on and all of a sudden smoke started coming out of the column. Turned it off and drove home. Tested and again it started to smoke. This time I was watching for it and saw a quick spark somewhere up in the column. Now the blower motor does not work. Truck runs, along with everything else I tested. Just replaced my ignition switch with your videos help. SO glad you put this up. Thank you!!
Thanks man that was really helpful I was about to lose my mind trying to figure out why my fan wasnt blowing thanks again.
Changed mine this afternoon. Great video. You helped me get it done in no time. Thank you.
James Hunter how you order the part? Whats the name on Amazon or ebay? I cant find it
Score SpaceCatMusik I bought it from Autozone.
James Hunter just go and ask for the ignition switch? Thank for the answer
Score SpaceCatMusik Yeah. You could probably even order it online and have it shipped to your house.
James Hunter thank you so much man i got now ls1144 duralast
Holy Hell I have been having this issue with the ignition/fan for a while now, and could not find a damn thing. THANK YOU
greenrumour - you rock! $26 part and 15 mins later my fan is blowing again! :D
Hey, just had my 16 year old son do this in his 2002 ram 1500 6 cylinder single cab truck. Thanks for the video it helped him out alot..!
Best instructional video i have seen .. NO BS .. thanks brotha .. I was on the right track and I got a mirrored light. I saw the top wire blackened and thought it might be a good idea to see what "the collective" have experienced. Awesome man ... Will be fixed tomorrow.... Jason
Thanks much! A "friend" of mine in the business quoted me $217.00 to do this. Thanks to your video it cost me $30 and about 20 minutes.....
Thanks for the video. Same thing was happening on my truck. Followed your video and its fixed.
Installed the new one? Now I have cold ac thanks for uploading this man saved me hundreds
Thank you for well thought out video, you made my repair much easier and less costly!
Hey Glen,
I would agree the fan could be dragging and causing a higher than normal current draw.
Thank you for this video. This was very easy and it cost me $28.88 to fix.
Ami problema. Me ayudas. ??
This was my issue and fix. Thanks for the video.
Yes yes! That has to be it! My ignition has been getting stuck in the counter clockwise movement. I’m guessing im gonna find some time
THANKS!!! I almost spent $90.00 on an ignition cylinder thinking that was the problem, due to my wife's 20# keyring. Great job on the video, you are awesome!
Thanks for the instructional video, blower works great now.
any suggestions as to why there is no heat on the drivers side but there is on the passenger side, the drivers side just blows cool /cold air
2005 ram 1500
Its the blend door. Dorman makes a replacement kit for it. Pain to change but was a problem for a lot of us.
Great video my wife was able to change ours what a easy fix thank you....
Im going to remove the fan and test for voltage at the fan plug.
i have the same problem. what did you come up with. thanks! dave kepler florida
Good Luck
Wow easy job I pay $40 to change that now I know how to change it thank you for this video
Thanks...fixed my fan (it was staying on) did you worry about the spades getting that hot and damaging the plug (female spades) ?
Thank you, that was my problem. It is now fixed.
Torx drivers or star drivers are available at any hardware store or auto parts store
Harbor freight tools as a budget option.
Wow, helped me figure out my problem in under a minute. Thanks!!
My switch looks exactly like yours and having same issues but it didn’t fix it. Truck still works as it did before I replaced it
The fan motor can be bad If its a bad motor sometimes it can be jolted into temporarily working by pounding on it with the palm of your hand or a rubber mallet.
Good Luck
Great video man, just took mine out and it was fried gonna get a new one tomorrow morning and hope it fixes my problem
Thank you so much for doing this video. My 2003 was doing the same thing. Watched the video, got the part $28.00 bucks, installed it just like you said and works perfect. Great job and cudo's....... GT
Thanks this is been a big help fan is been going on and off for awhile someone looked at it and told me it was the heat moudhle 70$ later it is not but it seems that this is the problem thanks for posting it great help!! Thanks
Got my ac going again, thank you.
Thanks for the video. Solved my problem.
Thanks for the help. Your video saved me so much time. Great job!
Well, who would've thunk it. Thanks so much, this is also my problem.
Big help thanx sir
Thank you so much for the video! Saved me lots of money thank you again.
Great video.
Out of focus, but it gets the job done.
Thanks a lot. I did it on my 2004.
Worked like a charm.. Thanks man!
Great Video I just fixed the switch on my 2003.
Sorry... couldn't figure out how to edit my post below.
It has two accessory positions. There are 14 wires plugged into it so the radio may be one of them
Thanks, I ask because the radio does the same danged thing.
Thank you dude!!! You must saved me money!!!!
Mine is the complete opposite. Sometimes the ac will run without the key in the ignition is this the same problem?
I have 400k on my ram 2500 and have had to do this twice the components and wiring seems to be garbage on these trucks
did anyone have theirs where the a/c light stayed on when the blower was in the off position? Normally (when the blower is acting right) my a/c light will turn off when i put the blower in the off position. My blower will randomly come on while driving and usually stay on.
Yeah mine is doing that, replaced ignition control switch bud didn’t fix the problem.
@@stuckinadazzee awsome! Glad to help bud
I'll be putting a video with this tip on my channel when I replace my blower lol
Did this today. Easy easy.
Any ideas?
It sounds like the clutch switch is either failing or is out of adjustment.
Great Video! Helped me out alot, I appreciate it. You were right saved alot of money doing myself. I look forward to more help videos.
29 bucks on ebay, sweet. Thanks man! I'll give it a try.
My power door locks, and dome lights don't work with the key off only when it's key on. Also my radio doesn't work at all. I checked all fuses. I'm hoping this switch fixes it
There is a good chance it will. Let us know how it turns out.
greenrumour I replaced my ignition switch and it didn't fix it. I don't know what to do.
turboedDC5 check the other end of the harness its about 18" long
Can anyone answer my question ?? What is the black and orange wire for on the ignition harness ?? Mine has went to ground and is blowing fuse number 10 can anyone help ??
I have an 04 ram 1500, with the opposite problem. The blower actually stays on after i turn the car off and remove the key. If i tap on the ignition it will turn off.
$30 i think I’ll try this.
Did it work?
@@brenttierney922 yes
Could this switch eventually stop the truck from starting?
Today I turned the AC on and all of a sudden smoke started coming out of the column. Turned it off and drove home. Tested and again it started to smoke. This time I was watching for it and saw a quick spark somewhere up in the column. Now the blower motor does not work. Truck runs, along with everything else I tested. Do you think this is the same issue and the ignition switch is the culprit?
its likely the same issue or the ignition switches wiring harness.
Perfect thanks!
Much obliged...
I'm about to buy a truck and want to know if this will work if the fan works when the truck is shut off, and not when running?
yes it can weld the contacts together inside the switch and fan can stay on.
